Right, keep the faith and hang in there...good advice, MDC. Sometimes all you can do is hang in there in the storm. I know I have been losing my focus lately and not weathering life's storms very well. I have been focusing way to much on me and not enough on Him. I have been feeling anxiety and depression knocking at my door...haven't actually let them in yet but they are knocking this week. Lots of temptation to give into the negative thoughts but I am still hainging in there. At times in my life, I seem to wage some really big battles with doubt. I guess I'm not alone there, though. It always helps to be able to come here to the porch and read about what is happening in the lives of my porch buddies and you guys are always such an encourgment.
Think I'll take my shower and find a good book to read...hey, maybe I'll read THE good book.

Hey TOM, don't melt! I know the heat has been pretty bad already and we still have a long ways to go. August here in South Texas is always just unbearable. It is a little better here on the coast because we have a sea breeze...the humidity is tough to deal with, though, and forget about your hair. You can fix it, and after you have been outside in the wind and humidity, it looks terrible in about 60 seconds.

Tom, it's hot here, too. 95 degrees right now, with a hot dry wind blowing, just sucking the moisture out of everything. I don't know which is worse, that wind or high humidity.
Well, guess I'll rustle up some dinner. I thawed out one of those roasts I cut off that whole tenderloin I bought a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't long until I realized that I wasn't supposed to pretend so I had to confess and tell everyone that I was a girl. I went ahead and kept the name Boo, though, because it is in TAGS in the scene where there are some real criminals in the jail and Gomer gets really close to the bars and is staring at one. Happy Father's Day to all you dads. What a heavy responsibility you have, but made light by off-setting joys. God bless you.
My own father went to be with the Lord on the morning of Father's Day in 2003. It was a hard time, as I found myself giving up the good man who had been such a powerful influence in my life, who had truly "brought me up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord", and had slain many dragons for me, but who stepped aside when my own knight entered my life. Aside, but not out. My dad was always there, and gently resumed his protective role when my husband passed in 1996. Already in the early stages of Alzheimer's at that time, still he tried to look after me. Even though I became the caregiver in his final years, I always felt just a little bit safer in this world because he was still here, and when he left, it was hard to let go of my last earthly anchor. Still, he had prayed for and dreamed of his own home-going, to meet the Lord and find my dear mother again, so I could only wish him Godspeed and be grateful as I let him go.
Now I watch my tall son as he rears his two little boys, and marvel at his wisdom and insight, and applaud the humor with which he tempers the necessary discipline. He is firm but fair, he encourages performance in sports but does not require it, and can be as tender as their mother in caring for them. He had a good role model in his own dad, and now he's repeating the cycle. God is good.
Be blessed, all. --Romeena

I love your comments concerning his stepping aside when you met Dale. Let me tell you as a father that has been one of the most difficult things to do. I love my two daughters with all my heart, and just figured there wasn't anyone out there that was worthy of them. Of course that wasn't the case, and as they have bothe met and married good men, it has still been difficult to "step aside" as you so sweetly put it. They both called me first thing this morning to wish me a nice day and tell me they love me. We will later have them and their families over for dinner and games. I'm still there for them if the need exists, and they know that. Thanks Romeena, for your thoughts.
Happy Fathers day everyone.

Spot, your pictures are in the album. Those tomato plants are gorgeous. Sure wish I could get a bucket of the beauties when they start bearing. Your home, of course, is beautiful. What a joy it must be for you to drive in after a long shift and see that pretty place waiting for you.
I now have Bentley, my granddog - will have him until Thursday, as his family is out of town. He's a good boy, Starr will enjoy having him to play with.
The natural world is just wonderful. There was no activity in my yard at all, so about an hour ago, I put out cracked corn, shelled peanuts, regular birdseed and a "critter mix" that contains sunflower seeds and bits of fruit and nuts as well as regular seed. I hardly got back in the house before a host of wildlife descended on the yard. At this moment, I can see pigeons, doves, sparrows, grackles, starlings, a blue jay, a woodpecker, a pair of cardinals, three mockingbirds and three squirrels. They all co-exist fairly well, just an occasional squabble that is usually settled quickly. It's all so much fun to watch.
Well, off I go. See you later. --Romeena

What sweet thoughts concerning fathers on the porch today. Asa, today in church they showed a slide show of pictures they had taken of men in our church with their little daughters (they had taken the pictures of dads and daughters over the past several weeks and had some great pictures) and during the slide show, one of the men who could sing well sang that song that is popular now called, "Cinderella", which is a man singing about dancing with his little girl while he still has her because soon she'll be gone. Very sweet and caused some tears among the dads. I think that the father/daughter bond is very special and extremely important. I see firsthand every week at the drug rehab, just what damage an absent or abusive dad can do. God bless you fathers who have sacrificed so much and always put your little ones first. It's the most important job you will ever have.

Better get going. We had a big dinner and I took a long nap (yee-haw). Now I'm off to mom's for a bit. My dad left this morning for his trip to California with my brother, Dave. I hope he is having a good time but he has been having alot of unexplained nausea lately. All his lab work is normal so we will have to look into it further when he returns. Hope you all have a great summer evening...slow down and enjoy your loved ones.

Good evening, all. Have just been hanging out this afternoon with Starr and her gentle giant playmate, Bentley. They're so cute to watch as they play. Starr knows no fear, trusts him completely, and pretty much bosses him around. He just good-naturedly goes along with it all. He's a good boy.
Boo, you are spot-on with your comments about the damage done to children, especially little girls, by absent or abusive fathers. This may interest you. Some years ago, Dale and I noticed a young woman standing outside the church as we were going in. We didn't recognize her, and she looked a bit lost, so we stopped and spoke to her, and were able to direct her to the proper SS class. We saw her again after church and invited her to go to lunch with us. She did, and in the conversation over our meal, we discovered that she was not saved, but was seeking. She confided that she had been abused by her father, and had difficulty trusting anyone. She had only been to church a few times in her life, and admitted to being confused by descriptions of God as our "heavenly Father", stating that she didn't think much of fathers, generally speaking. Here's the good part. Dale asked her if she had any idea of what she would have wanted her father to be like, what would be her ideal relationship with a father. She said yes, she would have wanted him to be kind and loving, unwilling to hurt her, to protect her and want only the best for her, etc. She went on with a lengthy description. When she finished, Dale looked her in the eyes and said, "You have just described God. The father you have always wanted has been there all along, just waiting for you to find Him. In fact, He loves you so much that He was willing to sacrifice himself in the person of his Son, in order to save you." She started crying, and said that was a whole new idea for her, and she would have to think it over. The next Sunday, at the end of the service, she accepted Christ and was baptized that night. She has been an active church member ever since.
I don't know if that little idea will work with your girls, but it's worth a try. That was only one of many, many times that I was so proud of my Dale. I have missed him a lot today.
Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Beautiful story Ro. You shared it with me about 2 years ago when I first started the bible study at the rehab and I have thought of it many times and used it in my conversation with the girls. It defintely has an impact, thank you for sharing it with me. I will continue to use it. You're a blessing, Ro.
Hey Chuck....don't rush off...
Well, the coffee is finished and I need to go over and give mom her breakfast. My sister is staying with her at night and when she leaves for work, I go over and make mom breakfast, etc. Plenty to do this week, that's for sure. Thank God I have the ability to do what needs to be done.

Good Morning Everyone:
Thank you to everybody that wished us a happy father's day. First Dad's Day holiday that I didn't get to spend with my daughter in person. Only time I miss Dallas is days like yesterday. Had to think about missing my grandfather and father...Went fishin' to ease the mind and caught the Bayou trash of the Turtles, Gasper Goo Carp and Alligator Gar. Caught a couple of good sized Bass and Bream though.
SPOT: Thank you for the update on your Porch name. REV: Many prayers for you and the Mrs. regarding your trip to Acadiana. Eat some good seafood for me. Boo & Romeena: Caught the Food Ntwk's "Diners & Drive Inn", show last night and caught the episode featuring the Tip Top Cafe. I was impressed. That Chef from Dallas "Lisa" on next "Next Food Network Star" won another competion. She impressed Martha Stewart last night. I guess I am wrong about her. She still needs to quit cooking in those $850.00 4" heel "S*x in the City" shoes. Next week episode features her slipping and falling on her tail in the kitchen.

Seems like everyone had a nice Father's Day. We did, too. Grilled some hamburgers on Saturday and took them and all the 'fixings' over to my parents home. Since Dad doesn't get around very well these days, we have all our get togethers over there.
Yesterday was also my 23rd anniversary. What a blessing the years have been. I have the most wonderful husband!!
Boo, I love your comment, "Thank God I have the ability to do what needs to be done." I've said that many a time myself in different situations. We need to have thankful hearts and not take anything for granted.
I would love to see these pictures that have been talked about. Is there a website?

Good afternoon, all. Red, it's good to see you. To answer your question, you can access the porch album on the web at romeena dot my photo album dot com. Just run it all together, you know the drill. I have personal and family photos there as well, which you're welcome to browse through if you wish, but the Porchsters album is what will be of most interest. Anyone who submits ten or more pictures gets a sub-album of their own. Spot was the first one to do that. That keeps the album from getting too big and unwieldy.
I'm spending a very lazy day. Just playing with Starr and Bentley, mostly, and watching TV. I did clean up the kitchen, it was getting scary. I absolutely hate to empty the dishwasher - most boring job there is. So, when it's full of clean dishes, there's no place to put the dirty ones! I can only stand it so long, though, and then the emptying must be done, and I did it. The kitchen is now clean once again. I hate for the kitchen or bathrooms to be dirty. I can take a little clutter in the rest of the house - Starr's toys, mostly. That puppy has more toys than the law allows, I'm sure, and she wants them all out and scattered around. I pick them up and put them in her toy box, and she immediately starts dragging them out again. And I do mean dragging - some of them are as big or bigger than she is! Too funny!
Well, guess I'll go watch Meerkat Manor. I love that show. Those little critters are so cute. I love it when they go on the warpath, tails all sticking straight up, and they go bounding along on little stiff legs, trying to look so fierce. Actually, they really are pretty tough, and some of their battles get serious. Good show.
Good luck with your fishing, Dud. Be blessed, everyone. --Romeena

Spot, those dogs sound like just the way I like 'em. When they're blackened and split, you just know they're gonna be gooood! A little mustard and relish, maybe some kraut, chopped sweet onion, some grated cheddar and a little chili - any or all of those additions just make a hotdog so good. Or, just plain mustard is okay, too. I ain't particular!
Sure am glad I'm not working tonight or tomorrow night. The moon is full, and I'll guarantee you our labor unit will be full, too. These are good nights to be off.
Well, guess I'll mosey on home and hit the sack. Starr and Bentley are curled up together here by my feet - so cute. You can barely see Starr, up against big old Bentley. Be blessed, all. --Romeena

Morning all. Hope your day is a good one.
My Uncle, who was very close to me, passed away last night. It had been expected. He was 94 and in declining health. His passing, although sad, is also a blessing. He was ready to go I think. I worry about my Aunt though. She has been suffering with dementia for a few years now. I'm not sure she even knows what's happened. In a way, I hope she doesn't understand. They've been to gether for over 60 years though, so I would imagine she has to be wondering where her partner is. They are both in as-sited living so she will be taken care of there, plus lots of visits from many caring family members, but I wonder how she is going to deal with things. Other than her mind, she is very healthy in evry other regard. If you could remember her in your prayers it would be mightly appreciated.
Thanks friends.

So sorry for you loss, ASA. Prayers for your you and your Dear Aunt. I know it must be very hard to lose him even though he was ready. In my family (on my dad's side), I am very close to my uncles and it's hard to watch them age. I have 2 left and they are great guys, both near 80 now. One I have mentioned here before. He is a preacher who lost his sight when he was a young man and was in a coma for months. He had led a very wild life up to that point and when he woke up, he said that Jesus was with him and that he was giving his life to Christ. Boy, did he and what a change. He's been serving the Lord now for about 50 years. I just love visits to his home. He and his wife are very peaceful, loving people and just being in their home is like rest for the soul. We drink alot of coffee and there are always homemade Ranger Cookies (Uncle's favorite), and good conversation. I know I will miss him when he goes home to be with the Lord but I also know he longs for that day and to see again.
ME-THEY is back!! Hope that after he gets a backhoe and clears that desk off, he can come by for a good moulage...I'm anxious to hear about the family vacation, too. I'm sure he has shorts for me to wash by now...glad I'm doing laundry today.
Off to feed mom her breakfast...
