August 16, 2007 - Msg 55006: My dear, dear friends. Your sweet messages of support mean so much. She had a perfectly horrible night last night, one half-hour episode of literally fighting and clawing for breath, then settled down and slept the rest of the night. I know that was God telling me what needed to be done before things got worse. So, it is done.

My son and precious daughter-in-law drove us to the vet, and I held her while he gave the injection. She just relaxed in my arms, and went to sleep. She is at peace, wrapped in a soft blanket, curled in her little cuddle bed, inside the nice box my friend Ted built for her. My son placed her beneath my window, right next to the house, where I can overlook her resting place every time I sit at this computer. There is a birdbath between a couple of low boulders, standing guard between her place and the yard. I will be ordering a small memorial stone to place over the spot, so she won't be disturbed in the future.

The house is much too quiet, and I can't stay here. I'm going with my church group on a day trip tomorrow, and Saturday I'll be going to Destin with my son and his wife and her family, will be gone a week. Then I have a week off work when I get home. Some chores to do around here, some carpet replacement to do, and then I'll set about finding another little companion. It's the best tribute I can offer to the Plum.

To say I miss her would be like calling Mt. Everest a hill. There is a hole in my life today that nothing can fill, but time will heal, I suppose.

Tom, that poem was beautiful - thank you. I believe you posted it just for me, and I appreciate it. --Romeena

Charlotte, tell your son congrats for me. I've golfed for 30 years now and still never had a hole in one. Closest for me was holing out my second shot on a par 4 from about 150 yards out with an 8 iron. I was pretty excited.... still am in fact. HA!

August 18, 2007 - Msg 55042: I was going into 10th grade when Elvis died. I remember getting ready to go to summer band practice when I heard the news. I was never a big Elvis fan but he was a part of the culture that I remembered all of my life until that point. I remember the Elvis movies being rerun on Saturdays.

Well, I certainly hope Hurricane Dean doesn't come here! It looks like it might come in South of us, which would probably give us alot of rain. It could still hit us, though. Bruce can't leave during a hurricane, due to the nature of his job, so if one comes I will have to try to get us out of here without him. It is such a mess trying to evacuate before a hurricane. Traffic gets backed up from Corpus to San Antonio and folks end up just sitting on the highway. Boy, I hope I don't have to deal with that, especially with poor mother. I don't feel right about praying that it will go into Mexico, though, because alot of those folks live in sub-standard housing or shacks and they die when a hurricane hits. We are much more able to handle it than they are. Anyway, I'm sure we will be fine. If Romeena was going to be home, I might have paid her a little visit. Waco is not too far from her area. Hope she is doing better today, but I know it will take awhile before she does.

Busy day today...got to catch up the laundry and clean the house in case we have to get the heck out of Dodge next week....

Boo

August 18, 2007 - Msg 55043: Thanks Asa!...didn't see you there..a big cyber hug to you, too. Yes, the outpouring of compassion shown by our friends here has been so touching. I think we all are just so sad for Ro because for years now we have known how precious Sugarplum was to her. I think it is particularly painful because Dale gave Sugarplum to Ro and there is something about saying goodbye to that part of her life that must be just extremely painful. I think it says alot about the kind of woman that she is, that she is talking about taking in another pup to love. I hope she will feel ready to do that soon because, even thoughs a new pup could never replace the Plum, it will help fill the hole in her heart and bring her alot of joy in time. I am already praying that the Lord will "line her up" with just the right furkid.

See ya later,

Big Jerry-I was 16 when Elvis died. I can still remember walking up to the corner store to buy some baseball cards that day and when I went to pay for them Charlotte, the store owner, was sitting there crying. Now to see Charlotte crying is almost as memorable as Elvis' passing. Charlotte was just not the crying type. She told me "Elvis was dead." Now to me this was big news, big news! But when I got back home and told my Dad he said he wasn't surprised. Looking back, I can see what he meant about not being surprised. Yeah know, my Dad passed six months later. This morning on a show called "Sunday Morning" they visited a barbar shop in henderson NC where they do pickin and strummin' as the barber cuts hair. It was neat and very Mayberry-esque. Reminded me of the Mayberry on Record episode.
Also, another time-honored tradition that is all but gone was having dad up on the roof adjusting the tv antenna, as about 3 of us kids would relay to him "Channel 3 is clear now, but 12 is fuzzy." etc Anyone remember those days? Also, pulling out the tubes in back and taking them to the drugstore tube tester! ha
Good Sabbath to all,

Opie: Boy, I'd like havin a mother who owned a drugstore with a soad fountain.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55074: Yep MDC, I remember the antenna adjusting days. I also remember having a spare TV in the bedroom with "rabbit ears". You had to put balls of aluminum foil on the "ears" to get it to work, and even then it was not very clear. Those were the days when you had to get up to change the three channels and to adjust the rabbit ears. Kids these days would just die if they had to do that now, wouldn't they?! I also remember that there were soap operas on a big part of the day and only cartoons on Saturday mornings (or between movies at the picture show). Remember the double features at the drive-in with the concession stand cartoon commercials?...remember the one with the weinie dog doing a flip and landing in a bun? I also remember alot of Woody Woodp@cker cartoons between features, and we would sit on the swing set near the big screen. Does anyone remember those things called "Pics"? It was a green coil that you lit in the car to keep mosquitos away. Boy, they stunk...bet it was real healthy breathing that stuff inside of a car...that combined with the marajuana smoke when I was in high school, made the drive-in a real healthy experience, I'm sure.

Anyone else have any drive-in memories they would like to share?

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55075: Boo,I remember the speakers that were at each pole at the drive in. I also remember that they would stop the picture about halfway so all could get sandwiches (DRINKS,POPCORN,CANDY,HOT DOGS,CHEESEBURGERS,ETC.)
Those were the best cheeseburgers, Not the nowadays dry ones that you get today.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55076: I also remember pulling in on my NOVA SUPER SPORT that would burn a gallon of gas quickly in traffic, but who cared as premium gas was 30 cents a gallon. It was loud at the drive in until all those muscle cars got in.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55077: We need to remember those miners families as they were telling on the radil when I was coming from church that rescue efforts for those 6 was pretty well at a standstill. I can not imagine the grief that the families must be experiencing now.
But, we know a SAVIOUR WHO CAN PUT HIS LOVING ARMS AROUND THOSE FAMILIES AND EASE THEIR PAIN.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55078:
Amen Big Jerry. I've been praying for those miners and families.

Happy Birthday to Goober's grandmother.

Millie...you have a great trip and just relax! We'll miss you but see ya when you get back.

MDC and Boo...yep...I remember those antennas and the rabbit ears. We used tin foil and coat hangers. And if you stood beside it sometimes that would make it come in better. Our tv picture would start fliping and fliping when it got hot.

Spot....are you off for a while now? Everyone be sure to go over to Spots for a covered dish supper outside. We'll even watch you wash your truck.

Well better get ready for bed. You all have a good night and know that I'm praying for all the porch family.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55079: Hi all, but 'gonna direct this one to Boo. Looks like Dean is headed south, but who knows. If you decide to evacuate, we are on your way. I can at least give 'you all' a break in the trip and fix a meal. If need be, you are most welcome to stay here even thou only guest room, but think Richard (son) will be in Bossier LA all week...so another bedroom...sofa and love seat in the living room. Know my great next door neighboors well enough to volunteer their guest room with out asking. If you want, email me at ersteen(at)satx(dot)rr(dot)com and can give you directions etc. You should have them anyway for when you pass by.

Can ramble someday about drive-ins....think I got everyone beat in the age group and they were even around in the dark ages.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55080: Taling about theatres this one out dates me, but very interesting. In the silent days most theatres had pipe organs that played for the movies. Rosa Ria was one of the organists and then went on to play for the soaps on radio. There is a great article in the Tampa newspaper about her....where she still plays an restored theatre. At 105 she is still making once a week performances. article:

Hello Ray.....I'm sure you've told us but where in Texas are you from?
-REV.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55082: Rev, we are north of San Antonio, Timberwood Park. We are 3 miles east of US281 and in the hill country...almost. Altitude in San Antonio is about 700' whereas we are at 1370'. It is peacefull and deer abound. I so much enjoy them and guess I buy their frindship....400 lbs of corn a week. Although we feed fifty or so, many are individuals you get to know. 'Spike' is one that wants to be fed from the scoop...we have known him since we gave him his name...he had just two spikes....now he is quite large and an eight pointer.

When and if you are ever this way, please feel welcome to drop by.

August 19, 2007 - Msg 55083: Romeena, I am so sorry about the Plum. You did what you had to do, and I know it was out of total love and was a tremendously painful decision for you to make.
I am going to miss the Plum, and I never even met her. But I knew her, as we all did, from your affectionate postings about her life and exploits.
And you know, I'm glad you want to find another one to take home and take care of. You have so much good love to give, I am sure there are plenty of furkids just waiting to receive it.

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55084: What a kind and gracious offer, Ray. Thank you so much. Like I mentioned before, we will have quite a caravan of adults, dogs and kids if we do have to leave and we have reserved motel rooms in Marble Falls if we have to leave. It is looking more and more like we won't have to. I know those hurricanes can fool you but the weather service is usually pretty accurate about where they will make land and it looks like it should be well south of us (hopefully). I have been a news-channel junky the past couple of days, watching what is going on with Dean (and tropical storm Erin). If we do pass by your way I will stop in and say hello. I will email you if we head your way. Thanks again!

Today is the first day of school for the kids and, wouldn't you know it, Erin woke up at 4:30am crying with a "tummy ache"! No fever, so I am guessing it's just nerves, poor baby. She really didn't want to start a new school and I am sure she will cry when I leave her. Please pray for her (and me! haha). Better go wake them up...

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55085: Good Morning porch folks, hope all is well this MOnday. Looks like another HOT day in Northeast Tennessee today. Back to work today after a busy week end. Football Jamboree on Friday night, our community had a Community Celebration Saturday night 5-10pm. Many of the churches in the area sponsored the event "Takin it to the Street". Lots of games, music and free food to all who came. It was kinda like a Christian Block Party. Patrick sat in the water dunking tank for a while, I worked the food court and my daugther helped with seveal games. My husband had to work so he missed the fun. It was a wonderful outreach to the commuity. My church had a Back to school picnic yesterday evening at the park so I about worn out. Lunch will be: tuna or chicken salad sandwhiches, chips, pickles, SLAW,
cold drinks, watermelon. Ya'll come. Prayers and Blessings to all today. Hey to everyone sitting around the porch today. Big Maude

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55086: Millie, I'm so glad you're getting away. Have a lovely time! How are things there, Boo? Storm passed? The miner thing really is frustrating. Can't they reach them? Prayers for miners and families.

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55087: Good morning everyone. I'm b-a-a-a-c-c-k-k-k! Good thing I got to work early this morning; it took until 9:00 just to skim the archives. I don't have time to chat this morning but wanted to drop by and tell y'all you were missed and your concerns are in my prayers. (I'll need a backhoe to get through the pile on my desk!) I'll stop back later (I hope) this afternoon to do some more directed comments and tell y'all about my trip.

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55088:

Goobah! I still yap with Lydia on a regular basis. She still hangs her head out the car window like a dog and pretzels still lay on her chest, but aside from that she's doing fine. I think she lost her way when the Porch moved, but I'll send her the new address and she if she won't stop by.

Tom, you're right. I think the Porch will go on longer than most of us will. haha Next month will mark my 11th year here (that's including Frank's old place), and it still feels right homey. (As in, "It feels very homey"; not, "Yo, it still feels right, homey." Oh my, now I've got the giggles.)

Spot, you're sure puttin' on some mighty good vittles. Now I'm all hungry.

Ray, I remember going to the San Pedro and Fredericksburg drive-ins when I was in my teens and 20s. What wonderful memories those were. I used to work for A Major Theatre Chain (I'm sure you know which one) here in San Antonio and was in the projectionist's booth the night the Judson drive-in opened in the '70s. It was, if I remember correctly, the first drive-in theatre in Texas to use the platter system, instead of the old reel system. Quite state of the art for the day. I sure miss drive-ins. My kids see them on TV and giggle at how, quaint, I guess you'd say, it was that one actually had to place the speaker on the car window. Btw, I'm familiar with the Timberwood Park area; it's very pretty out there. I used to live at 281 & Bitters, then we moved to Canyon Lake. I'm near New Braunfels now. You are very kind to open your home to our friend to the south. And speaking of whom...

Boo, I've been thinking of you down there near the coast. It's starting to look like the hurricane is going to miss Texas. Like you, I'm sorry for everyone in its path, but can't help but be relieved that we (hopefully) won't be getting any heavy rainfall. We just can't handle any more, what with the ground as saturated as it is and the city storm drains on overload. However, if it does hook to the north, you be safe.

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55089: Welcome back, Me-They! I was thinking about you the other day, as I am going to be taking a flight here soon, and I still harbor some anxiety about that as you did. Glad you're back safe and sound, and ready for more moulages. ;)

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55091: Thanks DES, I will get the heck out of here if that storm takes a turn northward (don't expect it will, though). Speaking of the San Pedro Drive-In, Bruce and I took the kids when we were visiting in San Antonio last summer. It was the first time I had been to a drive-in since my teens. I really miss having one in our area. They finally tore down the remains of the old drive-in in our town. It was sad. Now they are putting up am RV/boat storage on that lot....not nearly as much fun as a drive-in. I always tell the kids that if I ever strike it rich someday I am building a drive-in that shows family movies.....by the way, I think I will start calling you "Homey" now, DES....

WELCOME HOME ME-THEY!! I missed you, Bro. Hope you get out from under that mountain of paper work soon and can chat with us.

Well, the kids seemed to like their new school so far and I met their new teachers. They seem very nice....can't wait to pick them up at 3 and find out how it went.

I just saw on the news that they arrested another suspect in the shooting of the college kids in NJ. At least one of the suspects is an illegal alien, probably 2 of them. Scary to think of how easy it seems to be for foreign criminals to cross our borders.

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55092: Hello ,everyone, hope you all are well this mid-day. It is alittle cooler here in Iowa but still very humid. Boy doesn't Dean look impressive. Well I better get to my vacumning with 3 dogs I need to do it every day. Peace Dr P

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55093: Hey Boo, Hope the kids have a good start to the school year. Our school started today, too. I miss Drive-ins, too. My Mom and a friend of her's used to put all of us kids in our PJs and we would go to the show , 9 kids total in a station wagon it was wild. Dr P

August 20, 2007 - Msg 55095: Well, I'm not shoveled out yet, but it's time for a break so here I am. Don't worry, I won't start a new moulage on my first day back (but no promises for tomorrow!).

First of all, I'm so sorry to hear about Sugarplum, ROMEENA. It's never easy to lose a good friend. I do hope that being away with family for awhile will bolster your spirits. You have my prayers.

MILLIE: I'm glad to hear that you're feeling better since last week. You sure have your ups and downs, don'tcha? Well, we all love having you here on the porch with us, whether you're feeling good, bad, or overmedicated (hic!). You still taking those ten cent miracle pills?

STERLING: I'm so sorry top hear of your travel dilemma. Well, I guess it's more of a situation than a dilemma now that a decision has been made. I don't really have any sage advice (or any other spicy advice, for that matter) but I can sort of relate to how you feel (big "sort of"). You see, I was (cue spooky music--dum, dum, da dum) married before. Long story short, we got married in our early twenties after dating several years, and the marriage lasted all of a year and nine months (of course the divorce came almost as long later). I won't go into the nitty gritty of why it failed today. Now, the relevant part: while I loved my first wife, and deeply wanted the marriage to last, I often felt jealous and, at times, distrustful. Now, I never had good cause (well, until the very end) to feel this and thought this was just normal. Well, having now experienced a relationship on a whole other level I can tell you that such feelings are less a check of reality than inner insecurity. In my case, I think deep down I knew that we weren't willing, ready, or able. I don't know what it could be in your case, or even if it is, but how you feel has little to do with the actions of a spouse and more about your own feelings. I know that probably doesn't help at all, but it's all I got!

BOO: I do hope that your feeling less down this week. I think ROMEENA hit on something with the exhaustion thing. You do spread yourself a mite thin! I'm also happy to hear that your finally getting out of your parents' basement and getting your own place ;). And you're not the only one downsizing these days. I'm sure your house will be beautiful. You're right about priorities, too; you're kids will remember the time the spent with you, not the type of tile in their bathroom. I read somewhere that even though the size of the average family has shrunk since 1950, the average new home is more than three times larger than a new home then. There's a saying: "Love grows best in small places." Of course, that only applies if you don't kill each other! Actually, I think there's something to that; so many families ramble around in huge McMansions where they barely have to communicate with their families. Also, I agree with all the advice regarding your concerns about Erin; it's nothing to worry about. And besides, God made her and He doesn't make mistakes. The Chinese obviously haven't taken Him as their model of manufacturing. But I digress, as that's my moulage for another day...

AUH2O: If it's not too personal a question, what led you to be a stay-at-home dad?

Hey to the rest of you very special people.

Our trip to Arkansas went real well. My aunt has a place on one of the lakes in Bella Vista in teh Ozarks. We did a lot of lake swimming from her dock. Thekids loved it. We also visited Eureka Springs and Bentonville (home of Wal-Mart) and a really neat cavern. The bats were particularly active and at some places you had to duck so as not to knock them off the ceiling. Nora loved it. We had a wonderful time visiting with my aunt and her husband.

Thanks for your prayers about the trip. The flights went well enough, except that Chad got unexpectedly sick (very, very sick) on the initial flight right after lunch. It was everywhere--on him, me, the seat in front of us--and teh Mrs. said I looked I was shell shocked. It's funny now, not so much then. Good thing the Mrs. planned ahead and packed everyone a change of clothes in the carry-on just in case our luggage got lost. Anyway, it was a horror I never wish to relive.

Speaking of the hurricane, everyone complains about the waether but nobody does anything about it. Know who said that?
