July 18, 2007 - Msg 54239: Hey, all. Spot, your pictures are in the album. I sent you an email about the .bmp vs .jpg thing. It's really not a big deal. I think the basic difference is that .jpg takes up a whole lot less disk space than .bmp. The .bmp files are way bigger. Anyway, as I told you in my email, I have a program that converts one to another in a couple of key strokes - very easy.

Folks, go to the album and see Spot's new boat. It's beautiful! One of these days, I'm gonna show up on his doorstep and ask for a ride in that thing!

Romeena-Did you stay up all-night and watch Teddy's Pajama Party in the Senate? I don't about you but I loved seeing my tax dollars wheeled by the pizza man.

Yeah know, I wouldn't know Michael Vick from Michael Stivic but it does seem to be par for the course in the NFL these days.

Guess Me-They is having a busy day today. Seems like they have been working him hard at that museum. Guess there is more to do in the summer months?

Been doing laundry and cleaning. I am making a pot roast Romeena-style (with coffee in it....or maybe that was Dale's recipe?). Anyway, it sure smells mmmmm-mmmm good!

Think I'll go put the new toilet seat on the toilet. The old one was looking dingy and hard to keep white....anyone want to help. Where is Asa with his toolbelt when I need him?!

July 19, 2007 - Msg 54257: Good afternoon, everyone. The hospital called at 5 and told me I could have the night off if I wanted it. If I wanted it??? Does a goose go barefoot? Then, even as I was rejoicing and dancing around the bedroom, they called back and said I'd probably have to come in at 11, as they needed to float our aide to another floor at that time, so would need two nurses in the annex, with 5 patients. Now, how's that for cost-effectiveness? Float an aide who is paid about a third what I'm paid, and call me back in. Why do that? Because another floor needs the aide, and they don't have any to send. Why not? Because the aides are tired of being floated, so they quit, and they're also tired of being cancelled when they're not needed. They need their money, so they quit and go where the work is dependable. You can't blame them. The hospital could go on and let an aide work three shifts where they weren't really "needed", for what they'll pay me to come in for one shift. Go figure.

Boo, you have a good memory. That was Dale's recipe, and it is sooooo good!

Once again, the album address is Romeena dot my photo album dot com, all pushed together. The reason for spelling it out like that is to help foil the scanners who try to pick up addresses for spam. Not that it really matters on a web address, but it does help some with email addresses, to keep them from harvesting your address. At least, so I've been told. Don't know for sure if it's true, but it can't hurt.
Right now, spam is about to drive me nuts in my email. I have a spam blocker, but it also traps a lot of things I want, so I have to go into it every day and empty the garbage and send the good stuff to my inbox. I'd like to catch the spammers and put them to work in a sewer somewhere, cleaning pipe.

Well, on that cheery note, I guess I'll go spend a little time enjoying my short reprieve from work. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Spot- They just recently opened a Bass Pro Shop about three miles from my home. We went to see it last weekend! Wow, now that is a store.!!
There is also a new Home Depot next to it. I think a man could spent several days in that area! haha

AUH2o- the dust/sand storms here are pretty normal at this time of year. Other friends have said they saw it on the news also. I guess it was a slow news day! haha
Cooler tropical air blows into the state from the baja gulf and meets our hot air. (115 again today) That creates the wall of dust and sand of which we have plenty all around the metro area.
Sometimes it is then followed by rain clouds that build behind the dust. It is actually called our "monsoon" season. We get these evening build ups about twice a week from now thru August. Our entire annual rainfall here is about 7 inches, and we usually get about 4 of it during this time. There, ya got it right from the gecko's mouth! haha
Well, maybe I'll go hide under Possum's rock to keep cool. Maybe she'll have some lemondae, long as Mr Wheeler dont get there first! ha!
Have a good evening

Spot-How ya doing buddy?

auh2o

July 19, 2007 - Msg 54261: Howdy, all. Tom, it probably goes into the spambox, because I have the controls on the most strict setting, which basically means it will reject anything from someone who is not on my address list. Then when I go into the spambox to clean it out, if I don't recognize the sender's address, I just delete it. So, to fix that - I would need your email address, so I can put it in my list of trusted senders. That should keep it from going into the spam filter, but sometimes even then things get caught there. It's not a problem if I recognize the address. So - bottom line - I need your email address.

I'm still following the Michael Vick thing in the papers and online. Looks like the Falcons and even the NFL are going to tiptoe around for a while, hiding behind such high-sounding statements as "let due process play out" and such. While I agree that he should have his day in court, the question remains - was that huge, overwhelmingly large-scale and no doubt very visible and noisy operation being conducted on his personal property, or not? Obviously, it was, so I think a suspension is certainly in order until the "due process" has played out. Food for thought - if a police officer happened to find some heroin or some such in my car, how long do you think the hospital would allow me to work there? Do you think I could continue to work while "due process" played out? Nope. I could deny knowledge until judgment day, but it wouldn't help. When the evidence is so clear that a blind mule can see it, it's time to take action. Maybe that's a remnant of the Old West policy of "shoot first and ask questions later", but it works pretty well. I've been disgusted with professional football and their scrofulous, above-the-law, prima donna players for a long time, and this just puts the lid on the jar. Good grief!

One more thing - given Vick's activities in the dogfighting scene, don't you just know how he would treat a woman? Or a child that displeased him?

Well, got to get a few things done, because I will almost certainly have to go to work at 11. Ah, the joys of being a hospital nurse.

July 19, 2007 - Msg 54263: Romeena, I don't know why you have such a dislike for Spam. I simply love the stuff! It's very good with rice and some soy sauce. ;)

They just showed the episode with Barbara Eden in it, and I have to say, again, how pretty she is in it. I remember it surprised me when I first saw that ep because I never thought Jeannie(or is it Genie?) was very pretty. Must have been those weird clothes on her.

Well, still no call from the resort place. I'm still hoping though. I do know that the lady I talked with there for a different job told me after the interview they send your info to the corporate office for a look-see, so hopefully that is the reason for the delay in getting back to me.
If I don't hear from them tomorrow(with good news I hope) I think I will make another call on Monday. Thanks for the prayers!

Have a nice night at work, Romeena. As much as you can, anyway. Hope it is not too busy for you.

July 19, 2007 - Msg 54264: Hahaha! Good one, Sterling. Actually, I really don't like Spam (with a capital S) all that much either. I'll eat it if someone serves it, but would never do so voluntarily. My mom used to make a mock ham salad, using Spam, and used mayo in it, and olives. As a child, I hated olives, though I love them now. I also prefer Miracle Whip to mayo, but Mom used mayo. There was just something about that salad I couldn't handle, and I've never cared for Spam much since then. My mom was a wonderful cook, but that salad, well....

As for tonight at work, there are exactly five patients on the annex unit where I'll be working. Five patients for two nurses. However, since you can't leave one caregiver alone on a unit, for safety reasons, here I go. It will be boring, and the hardest part will be staying awake. Oh, well, tonight it's just for eight hours, and I can do anything for eight hours.

Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 19, 2007 - Msg 54265: That's a good point you make, Ro. I guess rich men receive more tolerance in most things... by the way, the roast was very good. I make a point of remembering anything that you say about your husband. It's kind of my way of paying respect to the life of a great man. Now, more than ever, I am realizing that those we love never really leave us. Hope you have an easy night. Maybe you will get some great patients who lay off the call bell and actually sleep!

MDC, I decided not to change the toilet seat, so you're off the hook anyway. You mentioned the Pro Bass shop; I have never been in one but I pass by one when I am going through San Antonio and that thing is gi-normous! I am tempted to stop and check it out but it is on a very busy highway and I never want to bother...come to think of it, there is also a Home Depot very near it. Maybe I'll take Bruce there for his birthday and let him hang out for hours!

Well, it's been a long day so I think I will call it a day and get Erin to bed...

Boo

July 20, 2007 - Msg 54266: Ro, I just noticed your comment about being able to do anything for eight hours. I had to smile because I remember saying that many times when I was working as a nurse. Once you start working those 12 hour shifts, you feel like you can do anything for 8 hours. I don't know if you have as much fun on the job as I used to, but while I was working nights in labor and delivery, it seemed like we were either killing ourselves with work or doing nothing...not much in between. On those slow nights, we usually had 4 or 5 of us on per shift (including an aid and a scrub tech)and we had alot of fun. We brought and shared alot of food, told great stories, laughed alot and even pulled pranks in the middle of the night. One of our favorite things to do was to try to fool the oncoming shift into thinking we were busy. We had this big dry erase board at the front desk and we had the patients names, diagnosis, etc. on that big board. We liked to fill it up with fake patients and we would give them terrible complications and so on. When the new shift would gather for report, we would give them a report on all these complicated patients and we would have someone stationed in the delivery rooms to scream, etc. (to add to the effect). It worked every time! And they were so relieved when they found out we had pranked them that they never got mad at us.

Sterling, quit looking at Barbara Eden and go to bed....heehee

Better get some sleep. I am supposed to be helping out with the youth lock-in at the church tomorrow night...

July 20, 2007 - Msg 54269: Well, will wonders never cease! Salty Dog, as I live and breathe. Believe it or not, I was thinking of you as I was driving home this morning, intending to put an APB on the porch for you, and now here you are. That is really weird! Has anybody noticed the Count hanging around? Whatever drew you here, I'm glad it happened, because you've been missed!

Now for the other APB I had in mind - has anybody seen Mary Wiggins? She has been missing for quite some time. She's not the only one, but I'm thinking of her especially, because I'd like to get another of her husband's paintings.

I had a scare when I got home this morning. The Plum stayed in her crate, didn't even lift her head when I entered the bedroom. I called to her, and she didn't move. Yep, sheer terror. I called to her again, and she barely wagged the tip of her tail. I called her vet, scooped her up and made a flying run out to his office. He found that she has a temp of 102.6 (normal for dogs is 100-101) and it would likely be higher if she wasn't taking Rimadyl. Once I got there, I saw that her eyes were looking a bit sticky, and Mike said he could hear some fine rales in her chest. Probably just an upper respiratory infection, and he put her on an antibiotic. You can't imagine how happy I was to hear that she has an infection! When you consider the alternative, what I feared was going on, you'll know what I mean. She should recover just fine from this. Mike was a bit more cautious, but still agreed that she should be okay.

Boo, what a kind thing to say, and so typical of your thoughtful self. Yes, my Dale was one of the good guys, and it's nice to have him mentioned now and then, even by those who never met him. It sort of keeps him close, if that makes any sense.

Well, I'm a tired old gal. I think I'll go lie down for a while, cuddle the Plum, and get a little nap. It was a long, dull night.

July 20, 2007 - Msg 54281: Good evening, all. Dr. P, thanks for the recipe for Ozark pudding. Would you believe that my Michigan-born husband absolutely loved Ozark pudding? His mother used to make it, though I have no idea where she got her recipe. She was born in Michigan too, but her family was originally from Tennessee, so perhaps there's a clue there. Anyway, she died when my husband was 14, and he had never learned to make the pudding, so all I had to go on was his description. Needless to say, I never learned to make it. Over the years, I tried, because he would often express fond memories of it, but nothing ever worked out. We sort of gave up and forgot about it before the internet was available, or I might have gotten the recipe there. Well anyway, now I know how to make it. Maybe I'll whip up a batch and enjoy it alone, in his memory.

Me-They, I agree - post-proofreading just has to be a compelshun. So many of us do it! I try to always proofread before posting, and catch errors then, but then I proofread afterward as well, and quite often catch something I missed. I guess it's better than having a hair-cutting compelshun.

Well, I'm going to get myself a bowl of cherries, watch a little of "How It's Made", and relax for a while. The Plum is feeling a bit better already, after just two doses of antibiotic, though she's still not her old self. Sure did scare me this morning, though. Poor little girl, she was just wiped out, just limp. Amazing how much one can love a little furkid. --Romeena

July 21, 2007 - Msg 54282: Aw, I hope Sugarplum is well soon.

Very funny post, Me-They! Good to see you on the porch.

Well, I am off to pick up Sean and his friends from the church lock-in. I was there until 11:00pm and I couldn't take it anymore...after seeing 3 of our middle-aged deacons doing karoake to "Bad To The Bone", I had find an opportunity to head home to get some sleep!...hope I can get another nap later today. I hardly slept at all.

Better go....

July 21, 2007 - Msg 54284: First round of 4-H judging. . .all blue ribbons. I think Casey's vet Science has a chance at Division Champion. That sure would tickle me and him both. We spent a lot of time researching and him fainting at the Vet's office should be worth that! Tee Hee

My FIL helped them with the woodworking - I was not too pleased because I thought he would have taken more pains with the boys to make them look better. He didn't, he thought they were good enough - we scored blues but I think I will invest in a scroll saw for next year's project and tackle it myself.

Well - McD's breakfast sandwiches for all - my treat!

homemaker

July 21, 2007 - Msg 54285: Wow, congratulations, homemaker, to you and your family. All blues - that's quite an accomplishment. I admire your parenting style - I think it could be summed up in one word - "involvement". It's the best gift you can give them.

Boo, that lock-in sounds like fun for the kids. Our church does that. We have a full-sized gym, so all sorts of competitions take place there. Basketball games with deacons vs youth was always popular. I remember one year when the deacons played the staff, including the pastor. The deacon pool was big enough to field mostly younger men, but the staff needed every available male. It was hilarious watching the pastor and the rest of the staff as they hobbled around on Sunday morning.

The Plum is still lethargic, doesn't seem to feel very well, but she will at least get up and follow me around the house. I guess I'll just keep the antibiotics going, and hope it works. Bette Davis once said "old age ain't no place for sissies" and she was right. It applies to furkids, too.

My Sunday School class has a "welcome wagon" ministry in one of the poorer apartment complexes here in town. We fill baskets with all sorts of little sundries - soap, toothpaste and brushes, combs, a couple of washcloths, dish soap, little packets of coffee and other miscellany and of course, a New Testament and a small booklet inviting them to come to our church. Naturally, we're always on the lookout for baskets, as we've all stripped our closets and attics a long time ago. Well, yesterday I was passing a garage sale, and had the impulse to stop, so I did. What do you suppose I found? Yep, baskets. Lovely ones, in excellent shape, and they were a quarter each! I bought all they had that were big enough - nine in all. It was like finding gold.

Well, guess I'd better get off this porch and get some work done around here. Gotta get a haircut a little later too, before the dogcatcher picks me up. Have a great day, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 21, 2007 - Msg 54286: Oh, I have to share this. I got it out of a Laugh Letter thing I get by email, and I thought it was too funny, just had to share it. Here goes:
--------------
Billy and Joe each had a calf to raise for the county fair. One day, Billy was sitting on the porch crying.

“What’s wrong?” asked his grandpa.

“It’s my calf,” said Billy. “I keep putting a bell around its neck so I can tell him from Joe’s calf. He keeps tearing it off on the rail fence.”

“Which one is yours?” asked his grandpa, trying to think of a better way to affix the bell.

“The black one,” said Billy.

July 21, 2007 - Msg 54291: Good evening, all. I know we have all been missing Asa lately, as he hasn't been around much. He has asked me to explain what's going on, because he needs our help. His wife, Debbie, is ill. The almost-certain diagnosis is multiple sclerosis, or MS. This is a condition that often defies diagnosis for quite a while, as it can mimic other things, but the last time Asa mentioned it to me, they were almost sure that's what it is.
Treatment so far has been unsuccessful. A new medication will be started next week, and they're hoping it will make a difference. Asa has asked that the porch folks pray for her, for healing, for comfort, for courage. He has asked nothing for himself, but I would encourage everyone to pray for him as well. An illness like this affects everyone in the family, and he will need strength and courage as they face this battle.
This porch has done a lot of praying, for a lot of our friends. I'm asking each of you to add Debbie to your prayer list, and ask God to strengthen and heal her body.

Thank you, friends. Let's storm those gates, and keep the names of Debbie and Millie constantly before the Lord. --Romeena

July 22, 2007 - Msg 54297: Morning everyone, yucky weather over here, 5 days of straight rain and clouds. Alot are saying its the worst weather by far for a summer in BC, besides one sunny streak earlier.

I seemed to have missed the news on Asa's wife, if someone could fill me in that'd be great. Whatever it is Asa, my thoughts go out to her to get better and take care.

Be back later.

Howdy porch family....I was in Livermore Falls, Maine this morning. We had a great concert and I just got into a litle town called Madison, Maine and set up for the concert tonight, so while waiting I thought I would try the internet and "bam" the church has wireless. Can't stay long but a quick hello.

Auh2o...I was at a McDonald's the other day and I tried to get the wifi from inside the motorhome in the parking lot and I couldn't connect. Probably have to go in to get it. Thanks for the info.

Thanks Ro for informing us on Debbie. She will surely be in my prayers along with our Millie.

Well it's going to be hard keeping Spot off the lake now with that new boat.

Well gotta go for now. I staying here over night so I should be able to check back in tonight. Prayers for all!

July 22, 2007 - Msg 54299: Just checking in. I'm sorry I don't get to visit often. I am busy, but I must admit I do also spend a good deal of time just enjoying my own yard and "porch." So don't fret when I don't find time to stop in. Prayers continuing for Asa's Mrs. and Millie. Hope you regain your strength from your latest chemo real soon, Millie. Glad to see everyone else posting regularly. Love all the food talk! This porch sure does know how to enjoy good eats.

July 22, 2007 - Msg 54300: Hey, DWF. Just read #54291 - that should catch you up. There's nothing more to be told. We just need to continue to pray for Asa and Debbie.

The Plum is still sick. Her temp last night was 103.8, which is very high for a dog that's taking an anti-inflammatory like Rimadyl, which also has antipyretic properties. I called her vet at home (he's a friend as well as her vet) and he said to just keep giving her the antibiotic and the Rimadyl, check her temp again this morning, and let him know at church how she's doing. Her temp was just 102 this morning, and she ate her breakfast and is drinking water, so we'll just keep doing what we're doing. This afternoon her temp is normal, 100.8 which is normal for a dog, but she still seems to feel awful. Won't get out of her crate, just sleeps a lot. I'm pretty sure she's going to be okay, but I'll be glad when she starts feeling better.

Have a great afternoon, everyone. --Romeena

Lucy-I meant to tell ya, I really liked the "church sign" you posted the other day. Hope all goes well for you on Monday.

Rev-I do think you need to go inside (if I remember right). New England is the better just for having you there. God bless.

Doc P & MDC-You guys, or anyone, watch "History's Mysteries" or "Unsolved History"?

MDC-Thanks for passing on the news about Colt. Boy, it seems like forever since the mayor was a regular.

Romeena-Praying for the Plum.

Gosh, so sorry Sugarplum is still sick. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for her. Prayers for her still.

This has been a tough day for me. I guess I am going through the "depression" stage of grief. Life just seems more sad than usual right now. I will be praying more during this time and will be remembering you who need it. Goodnight, Mayberry.

July 23, 2007 - Msg 54308: Hello folks.

I will continue my prayers for Millie and add Lucy, Boo, Sugarplum, Asa and his wife to my prayer list. Until Asa states if it is ok to do so, I will not use his wife's real name online. Remember Millie's husband asking us to stop using his real name?

July 23, 2007 - Msg 54309: Thanks PH. I am feeling the need to enter a time of evaluation of my spiritual life and to draw closer to the Lord. I have been staying so busy and trying NOT to think and in the process have been staying busy with things and avoiding time in prayer, etc. Just trying to avoid pain, I guess and getting bad results (depression). Time to stop running and deal with the problem.

The prayers of my friends here on the porch mean the world to me. Sometimes all of you are the only people I really talk to about what's bothering me. The porch is always here, even late at night (thanks Floyd).

July 23, 2007 - Msg 54311: Ro - thanks for letting us know about Asa and Mrs. Asa. Prayers for them!

Millie - I am so sorry that you are enduring such trials here on earth. You are such an angel to grace this porch. Prayers of thanksgiving that you fellowship with us!

We are busy at the fair this week so I don't know how much I'll be around. It is busy! We took in 13 goats to show. The other projects were judged on Saturday. Blues on woodworking for both boys and Casey has division champion on his Vet. Science and it goes to the state level, which he is excited about.

Need to get ready for a busy day!

WHY WORRY?
The sun still sets
And rises at dawn,
Painting skies with color
As s new day's born.
The stars still twinkle,
The moon still glows,
The flowers still blossom,
The grass still grows...
The mountains still stand,
The seas still roll,
God's in His Heaven
Still in control.
So don't fret or worry
When troubles abound-
Sweet peace and victory
Still in Him are found.

Good morning....Just wanted to check in on the porch family before heading out on the road again. May not get to sit with you for about a week. (not sure)

auh2o...again, thanks for the info but would you believe that the area that I'm heading to now has no McDonalds (or any chain stores). The nearest chain stores (walmart, Wendys, etc..) is about an hour away. I've been having concerts in that area each year for about 8 years now. It's really nice but remote.

Tom...That poem is so true....Thanks buddy.

Boo...you hang in there. You know you have the porch family praying for you.

Millie...I sure pray that today finds you feeling so much better. Continued prayers for you.

HM...have fun at the fair and good luck!

Ro..praying for little Plum. She's a big part of this porch family also.

Spot... don't get sun burned out there on the lake.

You all have a great day and tell someone about Jesus on your way. Prayers for all.

I'm so sorry to hear about ASA's wife, Debbie. They both will be in my prayers today and I've added them to my prayer list.

MDC: Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on COLT. I miss having our mayor around.

HM: Congrats to you and the kids!

BOO: You are in my prayers today as well.

We had a fine party for Veda this weekend. Family and friends. Lots of kids running around. It was nice, real nice. I hope that AFD's for Reagan went well, too.

Hey to the rest of you folks. Well, I'll check back later.
