Thanks for missing me everyone - just been way to busy to chat. It is a hectic time for special ed teachers right now. We are in planning meetings for our students for the next school year.
We have also had a few baby goats born this week. That keeps me busy too!
Ro - if you still have my email, could I get pipeman's address. Thanks! And speaking of Christmas trees - my interpreter/aide has a Christmas tree that she has wired every ornament on so she doesn't have to take them off, she puts a big sheet over it, and then puts it into her garage, she gets it out at Thanksgiving, takes off the sheet, plugs it in and Christmas afternoon, she puts the sheet back on and puts it back into the garage. I just laugh at her. She only wraps the gifts for her grandchildren and the rest of the gifts for her kids and SIL/DIL she leaves in the store bags with the receipts because she knows they will take them back anyway. Isn't that kind of a sad Christmas? Ugh!
Asa - I am glad you are feeling better. With the rib thing. . .can you still style your mullet and wear your tool belt? Just wondering. Sending you some meatballs for when the snow melts :)
Boo - I am not blonde with a bottle or without a bottle! But rather red and gray, unfortunately, the gray is winning! :)
Prayers for Enterprise, Alabama and all the people in the south who endured some really nasty weather.

It just occurred to me that we passed our "50000" mark for posts! We should have had a party or something! And I note that Millie posted the actual post # 50,000. We should get her a watch. And put "50000" on it. I'm serious, folks. That's pretty amazing that we hit that many posts. Thanks to good 'ol Floyd, who makes it all possible.
Hey, Ky Girl, yes, you should try potatoes in pots. Get your pot fairly big, like a half whiskey-barrel size. Put it about 2/3 full of dirt. Plant your potatoes in the dirt, with the eye up, (just use a quarter of a potato, as long as it's got an eye on it) and put about 3 inches of dirt on top. About 3 weeks later, you'll have a little sprout of a plant just peeping thru the soil. After that, they grow FAST. When the plant gets around 5 or 6 inches high, mound some dirt around it so only the leaves are showing. Do this again in about 3 weeks. Then one more time 3 or 4 weeks later. That's why you start the plant in the pot with only about 2/3 full of soil; so you have room to mound up dirt around it. They are actually pretty easy. There's more to it than what I've said, as far as soil conditions, and watering, but let me know if you actually decide to do it and I will give you step by step instructions. I'm from Idaho, so of course you will never grow as good of potatoes as me, but you can try. (haha)

Well, welcome to you, 10-4. I like the way you just fit right in. You're gonna be an asset to the porch, I can tell.
Has anybody else been caught up in a "spoofing" episode? I keep getting these "mailer demon" (my term) things, telling me that a spam email I supposedly sent out for a Canadian drug offer was undeliverable because somebody's mailbox was full. Full of spam, no doubt. Obviously, I didn't send them, but somebody who has my address in their address book has an infected computer, and it's using the entire address book to show as the sender on all this spam. Very annoying. I hate having my email address going out on thousands of spam things. Makes me want to take the bug spray to my computer. Something has to be done about the growing spam problem, but I'll just bet if anyone makes a real try at it, the ACLU will jump up and scream about free speech. Now there's where we need the bug spray. Something that started out as a good thing has been twisted and perverted into a noose around America's neck.
There you go, 10-4, that's how you start a moulage on the porch. Probably won't be much of a moulage, though, because I doubt there are very many who would actively defend the ACLU.
The Plum is feeling poorly again this morning. I'm getting worried about that baby. However, I think she ate too many carrots and little tidbits fed to her by my friends last night. Twelve women, almost all making a fuss over her and slipping her little bites - no wonder she's got a tummyache. I say "almost all" because I have one friend who just simply doesn't understand what all the fuss is about - it's just a dog, right? Wrong! Poor thing, she doesn't know what she's missing. Oh, well, her loss.
Sugarplum would say hey if she felt better. --Romeena

Good Evening Porch,
Hope everyone is having a mighty fine weekend. Yesterday I toured a historical home in Roswell that I've been dying to see for awhile and then met a friend for lunch at a tea room. It was a nice day. Today I dropped Nick off at the paintball field and so Bryson and I went to the outlet mall for some shopping. I love getting good deals, don't you? Recently I have been on a frugal kick and just threw that out the window today, ha! No, I got really good bargains, and didn't do too much damage.
Today I was watching the Sermon episode of TAGS in the 4th season. That's when the preacher from NYC told everyone to slow down (ironic since he's from NYC), but isn't that true? Don't yall think we should just relax a bit more? I'm tired of the constant stimulation of my brain from tv, computer, video games, crazy music, etc. Anyway, sorry for the commentary.
10-4- Welcome to the porch. I live in GA near spot with 3 kids ages 9,11,13. Pull up a chair and rock for a spell.
Millie- I'll take the asparagus, salad and rolls. I'm on a diet for the spring. Thank you for offering!
Romeena- Give the plum a hug from us. I hope she feels better real soon.
Spot- Have fun in Helen. I have been there once and stayed in a cabin. It was really nice and relaxing.
Hazel- Thank you for sharing your gardening info. I plan on going to the Garden Center next week.
Well, I need to run. I'll try to check in later. Bryan keeps texting me (he's in CA) so I'd better respond. Have a great Sabbath tomorrow!
Blessings to you and yours,
March 03, 2007 - Msg 50068:
Good afternoon, all. The Plum is still not feeling well, though she has gotten up and walked about a little. I'm getting concerned. It's true, she's spoiled, and she had about six little carrots last night, along with a few tiny tidbit bites, mostly little pieces of bread, from our sandwiches. If this was a weekday, I'd have her at the vet's by now, but on a weekend, my only choice is one of those 24-hr vet things, and our local one leaves something to be desired. I'd rather she see her own doctor, so will try to make it until Monday morning. If she gets worse, though, I'll do whatever I have to do.
I don't mean to be ignoring the questions about container gardening, it's just that I know nothing about it. The extent of my experience was a few strawberry plants in a big pot, and between the birds and squirrels, I never tasted a berry, so I'm not much help.
I got another flat of pansies planted this afternoon, that's seven flats so far, and looking out my window, they're hardly noticeable. This yard swallows bedding plants like a black hole. I think I'm about through with pansies now, will wait for dianthus and snapdragons to finish things off. Oh, also have about ten cyclamen plants in the ground, and have lost count of the iris, but know it's at least fifty. Also have a lot of hyacinths blooming, as well as daffodils, crocus and other little bulbs. Such a sweet surprise to be walking past an apparently sleeping area in the yard, and see a bright little yellow crocus face smiling up at me. God is good.
Well, guess I'll go see about my little Plum. Have a good weekend, folks. --Romeena

Hey Me-They and Spot, no need to worry about me. I still read posts here on occasion and pop in over at Sarah's about once every two weeks.
Hey Millie, I also watched Awakenings. I love that film. It's based loosely on fact. One thing I never learned from the movie was if the patients were cognizant of their surroundings when they were "frozen". Reminds me of that famous British Scientist Stephen Hawking.
Also, if you are having trouble getting used to your new medication, why not try drinking some "cooking sherry" after your dosage? Remember the song "Just A Spoonful Of Sugar Helps The Medicine Go Down"?
To Hazel. As far as I know, we have had three different hosts for The Front Porch. I started back in the mid 1990's when Frank was the host. When Frank left, someone else took over for a couple of years. Then Floyd took over in May 2001 and is our current host. So although the current numbering system is around 50,000, we are way beyond 50,000 posts. I believe the older archives are lost.

March 03, 2007 - Msg 50075:
We all miss you, Boo. Hope Bruce can get your computer well very soon. And Millie, don't worry about commenting on the Plum's spoiled-ness. Trust me, truer words were never spoken. She's absolutely rotten, I've made her that way, and I don't care. She's a good kind of spoiled though, like a well-loved baby. She's not allowed to act ugly (as if she ever would), but she does expect a lot of love and attention, and absolutely DEMANDS those little carrots. Barks until she gets one, and will not shut up. Everyone who enters the house is immediately led to the fridge and shown the door, then the proper drawer, which must be opened for her, whereupon she dives in and gets her carrot. Everyone who knows us knows the drill, I don't even have to say anything. It's too funny!
I sincerely hope you're feeling much better. I don't know how you function, and do all that you do, while under those vile treatments. God bless you, sweet thing.
Poor Horatio, please don't be so scarce. We miss you, with all your knowledge and expertise, and good advice. We need you around here, friend.

Thanks Millie and Ro! I miss you all too when I'm away. Washing two 100lb dogs? Now that is a chore. You must be feeling better.
I had the pleasure once of meeting Sugarplum and what Ro says is true, the first thing she did when we met was lead me to Ro's daughter's refrigerator, where she got her carrot out of the bottom drawer. So cute! She is a very sweet-mannered puppy and there couldn't be a mean bone in her body (except when it comes to the mail dropping throught the mail slot in the door...hehe).
Now Sean is sick with Erin's bug but he can stay home with mom and dad while the rest of us go to church. I'm wearin' earrings if anyone cares!

Ronnie- I love your comment about chasin cats for eternity. That's such a good visual. I think of Tom & Jerry.
Poor Horatio- Why are you not joining us so often? Is there anything wrong?
Boo- Computers are like men, They're a pain in the neck, but life wouldn't be complete without them!

Millie, I don't think you should be chatting with PH and 10-4 about briefs. That's not proper.:)
Better get busy Lucy. You played, now you pay.:)

Thanks, everyone, for your concern for my little Plum, and to you, Boo, for your kind words about her. She is indeed the sweetest and gentlest little thing, very loving. She's feeling better today, ate her breakfast - small amount, I didn't load her tummy - and has been up and around a bit, though not showing much energy. I won't need an appointment in the morning, her vet will see her any time. He's a church friend, and has cared for her since day one, when she was nine weeks old. She loves him!
Asa, save me some ice cream. Good stuff, that homemade ice cream. What flavor are you making? If you're making vanilla, I've got some frozen peaches we can thaw and use for topping.
Well, better go see about my baby. She has gone back into her crate, may be feeling poorly again. Her little tail was completely tucked under her body yesterday, has been at half-mast today, I'll be glad when it's flying high over her back again. That tail is a true barometer of her feelings. --Romeena

Good Sunday afternoon porch friends, Hope everyone has had a good Sabbath. Kids and I went to Sunday school and church and are back home for a restful Sunday afternoon. My husband is only able to go every other Sunday as his job requires that he work 10-6 2 Sundays a month. He used to work 12-7 on Sundays which allowed him to goto worship with us every Sunday but the store hours were changed in February. He has been upset about it but not much he can do except change jobs which
is not really an option. Hope the PLum is feeling better. How about we have Beef Brisket, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, slaw, rolls, butterscotch pie for dessert. Coffee, tea, kool aid to drink. We will eat around 5 today.
Asa, can bringthe ice cream and Romeena canbring those yummy peaches. Cool here today, back down to the 30's and breezy. surely is March weather.
Please pray for a friend of mine, she had surgery on Friday and thank goodness things were okay but she has a lot on her plate right now and will have to make room to take care of herself as well. The dogs were all clean this morning, then they took off, and now they need another bath! We live near a swamp, with lots of wildlife, so they must've had quite an adventure. Oh, well, maybe Sean will do it tonight.

Hi, all. Happy to report that the Plum seems to be slowly getting better. She's still not up to par, but is better than yesterday. She's eating, which is very good.
I got outside and planted a flat of dianthus, two more iris, and half a dozen cyclamen. Nothing left around here to be planted right now, but just wait until next week. Oh, shoot. I forgot I'm getting that eye surgery on Thursday, and since I'm working Monday and Tuesday nights, I guess that puts the kibosh on planting for a week or so. No stooping or lifting for several days after the surgery, you know. Well, wait until the week after that! I'll have snapdragons and dianthus everywhere. Then in a few weeks, petunias will be joining the crowd. I love them - so bright and colorful.
I pruned four rosebushes. Don't ever let anyone tell you that Knockout roses don't have to be pruned. They do, unless you want to move out and let them have the place. They grow like mad and get very rowdy if you don't keep them in check. Mine were nearly six feet tall, and about that wide. They're now about two feet tall, but will take off like rockets now and make up for lost time. They'll be blooming beautifully in a few weeks.
Well, guess I'll go give the Plum a little bit more to eat. I'm making her take it slowly, and she doesn't seem to mind very much. Have a great evening, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Happy Sunday to Everyone! Wish I could list all of your names, but I'm afraid I might leave someone out. Thanks so much for your warm welcomes. I love the front porch already! Like most of you, my family and I attended church today. Our dog only weighs 45 lbs., Millie, and I too don't know how you do it. I like the ice cream idea, are we using the manual crank or automatic? In either case, I call the batters first! Also, add Hershey chocolate syrup and the glazed nuts. I really enjoyed the brisket, and love sweet tea! As far as the "briefs" discussion, Asa, it was quite interesting. You'll have to stop by Sarah's sometime and join in. Auh20, great song by C.W. McCall. Did you know he used to perform as part of Mannheim Steamroller of Christmas songs fame? Oh well, gotta run...I'll see ya.

Oh, don't get Asa started on Mannheim Streamrollers... they're his favorites!

Hey All, been a busy day! Church, a birthday party, a 4H meeting and then a planning meeting for VBS...Sunday is not a day of rest around here, unfortunately.
Glad Sugarplum is feeling a bit better today. Hopefully tomorrow will be even better. I wonder if she is getting into something that is making her sick?
Thanks for the kind words, ASA. I appreciate it.
Hey Maude, prayers for your friend.
Today was the most beautiful day ever! Cool, dry and sunny.
Well, better go get Erin ready for bed.

Romeena- We still have just about 3 feet of snow in the backyard. We lost a bit over the last few days. I do love hearing about your yard, it gives me hope. I enjoy the winter but nothing beats spring, I just cannot tell ya how much I love it.
I'm glad your little Plum is starting to feel better.
Millie-We didn't have much snow here until the second week in January.
Big Maude-That is a mighty fine sounding meal. Prayers for your friend.
10-4 I can remember buying that C.W. McCall album when I was a teenager, I still have it. I didn't know about the C.W. and Mannheim Steamroller connection, interesting.

I've thought of that, Boo, and it's a possibility. I have a big plumeria tree that normally lives in a huge pot outdoors, but had to be brought in for the winter. It's in the sunroom. Once in a while it drops a big old leaf, and she finds them and brings them into the living room, where she shreds them. I really don't think that's the problem, though, because it's been going on all winter, and she has only been sick off and on for the past three weeks or so. Still, it's something to investigate, and I will definitely be picking those leaves up more carefully. They don't fall until they're dry, so I'll just pull off any dry ones I see.
Millie, and 10-4, I'll bet you'd love giving the Plum a bath. She weighs about nine pounds, and I bathe her in the kitchen sink. Then I wrap her in a big old beach towel and we go and cuddle in my chair for an hour or so until most of the moisture is absorbed by the towel. Then I dry her with her very own little blowdryer, combing as we go so her hair is smooth, straight and silky. She's beautiful after a bath. We use lots of sweet-smelling conditioner, too.
It was pretty here too, Boo. About 60 degrees, sunny, light breeze. Perfect for the planting and pruning I did.
Well, get a good night's rest, everyone - especially you, Millie. May God give you peaceful sleep. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Oh, sorry, auh2o. Hope I didn't rock on your toes. I wish you could come down here and help me enjoy my yard, since yours is still frozen. My arbor swing is a mighty pleasant place to be right now. Good readin' spot.
Asa, you like the Steamroller too? Wow! I just love them! I have that 4-disc Christmas collection of theirs, and I must confess, it's still in the changer in my car and I'm still listening to it. I know, it's March, and I don't care. I just love their music. How about their version of "Auld Lang Syne"? Did you ever hear it done any better? Beautiful!
OK, this time I'm heading for the house. The Plum wants to turn in early, and I guess I'll join her. She says hey! --Romeena

Hey there, Auh2o. Wish I could share some of this spring weather with you. At least you will have some beautiful summer weather coming your way while we swelter in the heat and humidity down here in the far South. This has been a strange winter for us down here, lots more cold weather than usual, it seems. It's supposed to freeze here tonight so the dogs are in for the night. However, we already have some wildflowers popping up and the bright green leaves are coming out on the trees. Wonderful time of year here.
I just put Erin to sleep and I thought of you all because we have talked so often about the old church hymns and I always put Erin to bed by telling her a story or reading to her, and then she wants me to sing to her. I sit there in a chair beside the bunk beds and sing the old hymns to her and Sean while they drift off to sleep. Since they don't hear them often in church anymore, I want them to be familiar with them and it seems like if I am trying to sing from memory, those are the ones I remember. It is such a peaceful time, sitting there in the dark singing softly, listening to their soft breathing. It feels like "God is in His heaven and all is right with the world"...
Sweet dreams, Porch.

I just stopped back by for a minute, and I'm glad I did, Boo. What a sweet picture you paint! I wish every child in the world could be put to bed as you describe. Things would be different, that's for sure.
And I agree. I do so miss the old hymns. Those praise choruses have their place, but so do the old familiar hymns. It's fun, during our departmental time in SS, before we break up for classes, to sing the old hymns. We have hymnals, but they're rarely even opened. Everyone knows all the songs and we just sing! What a privilege. --Romeena

Morning porchters. Happy Monday to everyone.
Hazel's right. I like Mannhiem Steamroller pretty fine. Best Christmas music ever. I really like their rendition of Oh Holy Night and Silent Night. Just wonderful. I'm the same way Ro. I listen to them most of the year. And you are right 10-4. C.W. Mcall who did the song "Convoy" in the 70's, is Chip Davis, who is the main force of Mannheim Steamroller. Who'd a thunk it? Convoy was actually a jingle he had written as a bread commercial for a bakery in Omaha. It became so popular he did it as a single and it sold over a million copies. Very talented fellow.
Glad Sugarplum is done going flop-bott Romeena. Poor little thing. I hope she is ok.
Auh2o, are you leaning towards Rudy? Just curious.
Well better get to work. Gotta a busy week ahead.

The Plum is much better this morning, seems to be her old self. I'm still going to call her vet, though, just to see if he has any ideas. Asa, I love the reference to "going flop-bott". I remember that you enjoy the Herriot stories, just as I do. I even have an abbreviated version of his theme poem on my checks. It reads, "All creatures great and small, the Lord God made them all." The checks themselves bear pictures of the young of endangered wildlife - baby tigers, bears, seals and wolves. I've used those checks for years. They do draw comment, and it gives me a chance to speak up for the animals. Of course, the slumped-over teenage boy at the register, who made the comment, looks at me like a duck looking at thunder, but I don't care. Maybe it makes at least a tiny impression.
Well, I'm off. Got lots to do today. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Good morning to ya'll - Miss Ro, I am sure envious of your flower planting. We are hoping for a high of 39 today. That would almost be a regular heatwave around here. "They" are saying 50's by the weekend. It was biting cold with the wind on Saturday and spiffs of snow. Went to a farm auction and froze my Aunt Fanny off. Even the chili and the chili dogs they served were cold not on purpose that is).
Lunch sounds delish Maude (had an aunty named that and she hated it) - I hope that's 'mater soup with them sammiches - even veggie would be great.
Good to see no recent moulages - but a good moulage is food for the soul.

It is a snowing and a blowing here today. This morning, the weatherman said our high tomorrow may be something like -2 but this weekend we are looking at maybe the mid 40's.
Ro & Boo-Thanks, a bit of spring would sure hit the spot (for a lot of us, make that, most of us).
Asa-Ya know, I'm a law an order type of guy, so Rudy would fit that part of what I'm looking for. I know he won't "cut-an-run" like those on the left. However, there are the social issues, that give me pause. But, I guess, ya got to give a little to get a little, sometimes. If wishing made it so, I'd pick Newt. What are your views?
M-T Well, hello there moulage buddy! I enjoyed "The Patriot," also. Your right, it is good to see Poor Horatio again.
Dr Pindyke-Good to hear you got your "electro" back. Although, I'm sure Mr Gore is saddened by it.

I just talked to the Plum's vet. He's wondering if she might have a chronic, smoldering pancreatitis going. He says there's nothing to do right now, since she's feeling okay, but he hopes her next episode (if there is one) will occur when his clinic is open and I can bring her in. He wants to draw a blood panel during an attack, and will send it to the vet school at A&M. He said there will be much to be learned from it, so guess we'll do it. Actually, I hope she just doesn't have any more spells. Poor little thing, she feels so terrible when these things come. Thank God, she's fine right now. Merry little soul, just bouncing around the house, tail plume waving.
Well, gotta grab a nap, have to work tonight. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Sounds like you have a great vet there, Ro. I hope Plum doesn't have another attack but if she does, I pray it is on a weekday so you can find out what is going on with her.
I went to see the Amazing Grace movie and it was good but kind of fragmented in parts. It's hard to tell a "years long" story of a great man's life in an hour and thirty minutes. It's worth seeing, though.
Hey Me-They, I like a good weekly moulage....let's see...how do you feel about the state requiring the HPV vaccine for girls in public schools? Just curious....
I'll just drop that bomb and run to pick up Erin from school...

On the subject of the HPV vaccine, here's a thought. Some parents are objecting on the grounds that it will give girls "permission" to go out and shall we say, misbehave. There is a grain of merit there. However, let's assume that one's daughter is as pure as the driven snow. The best we can hope for when she marries is that her new husband is as virginal as she is. Otherwise, she's unprotected. I wonder what the reaction to the vaccine would be if someone proved that HPV also led to testicular and prostate cancer? Hmmm?
And on that note, I'm off to work. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
