Me-They- Thank you for your prayers and encouragement. Nicholas has been shoved around by some big kids and threatened with his life. He's new and racially not in the majority. I found 2 schools that we may be able to put him in. I'm waiting for a call from them on availability. One thing concerns me about them both. One is a science academy, and though he's decent in science he's more adept in reading. The other requires arabic classes for 30 min./day. I'm going to make sure its not of another religion. But, I would think it would be better than feeling threatened every day. He left a hostile environment and doesn't need to join another.
Speaking of which, I'd better skedaddle to the carpool line for both boys. At least I can read!
I'll check in later!
Blessings,
~Lucy

LUCY: How did you narrow down the field to those two schools, if I may ask? They sound pretty specialized. And what kind of school requires 30 minutes of Arabic a day? That seems kind of odd since Arabic is not one of the world's dominant languages. What age is Nicolas (sorry, I forgot)? Is Arabic offered to every grade? It's not necessarily bad, just wierd. If it is a sceular private school I would be interested to learn what their philosophy is for the strong emphasis on Arabic. While it seems anything is better that being bullied, if the other school is indoctinating a religion differing from yours, don't dismiss the possible long-term and devastating effects it can have on a child. I'll keep your family in my prayers.

Awesome poem Tom I love that one! Big Maude is it getting crowded here? Oh my is it crowded! Sure makes it hard to get around town even on the other end of town from the track. I am not doing dogs down close to the track at all this week, my nerves can't take it! We have Food City Family Race night here tomorrow night too, State St. will be closed down & lots of the cars, drivers & haulers will be there. It is lots of fun, but I wouldn't go unless I was working one of the booths. Last year, I worked the Organ Donation booth for the night & met some really neat folks. Spot you would love it here this week, lots of race things going on & the campgrounds are like one big family down there. Some folks have been getting the same camping spot for over 10 years! I'm ready to hit the ironing board tonight, did'nt sleep well at all last night, groomed 7 dogs today (alot for mobile, not alot for a salon) & fought that traffic all day. I'm worn out! So see ya'll on the morning for breakfast at Boo's house, might as well get her used to us coming over now before her house is done, won't be such a shock to her later. ;)

4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, Master bedroom/bath on first floor. # bedrooms upstairs with a bathroom and huge play room. All but one bedroom has walk in closets. The 4th room is actually our dormer window on the back, it just happened to be that large. OH..the house is a full two story too. two big storage areas on each side upstairs as well as a large attic. Quick Mornin' Honey's to you all!
Last night I went to a grouplink at church to join a ladies community group. In my area they were either old or full so I started talking to these girls and we formed our own group. I am the only member of the church so I automatically became the leader! That was a surprise. I haven't even been in a ladies group. Oh well, that's the Lords plan, than so be it.
Me-They- I had to choose a charter school because its not necessary to be in the district to attend them. I'm going to check out both schools this morning. I'm really hoping there's an opening in the science academy because he has a friend that goes there. Our only other alternative, besides the arabic and science schools, is for me to homeschool and I really don't feel led to anymore. He's in the 7th grade and though I could probably do it, I really don't think its good for him. He needs friends that he sees daily.
I go today to Bryson's school because the teacher set up a conference b/w she, the principal, and I. Bryson's being very unsocial and they're concerned.
Idelle & Boo- You're houses sound lovely!
Big Maude- I think its wonderful how much your children do with the church. You're a good Mama!
Mavis- Wouldn't the dogs freak out if they heard the noise from the race track?

Good morning everyone! Mild temperature here, though still no rain in sight. Our poor flora isn't used to such a dry spell. Trees are croaking, most blooms are gone, and the grass is brown and crunchy. And grass ought not to be brown and crunchy.
SPOT: The pics were taken at Chincoteague Island, Virginia. It's a very interesting place with a fascinating history. The island is like a small town with one bridge on/off. It used to be the oyster capital of the Chesapeake but now relys mostly on tourism. Great casual, family seafood restaurants. It's still not heavily commercialized, and because it doesn't offer a boardwalk or really anything in the way of adult nightlife, nearly all the vacationers there tend to be families. It's also linked to Assateague Island (you know, the wild ponies). The Virgina side (which is most of the island) is best because it's a wildlife refuge. Lot's of critters and trails to bike or hike, and beautiful unspoiled beaches all arounnd that are onlty even mildly crowded on Saturdays. No worries about rowdy teenagers. My family has been going to Chincoteague since the 1960s. My parents have a trailer and camp; we stay nearby in a house. The island is not that big and perfectly flat, so once you're there you can park the car and bike everywhere. It's great. Mosquitos can be bad some years, but as long as you spray if you go out after dark you're in great shape. Google it if you have the chance.
BOO: Maybe I can shorten your name to BOO BLA. What do you think? And by the way, thanks for ironing. My pants gave me hot knees! Breakfast sounds great, though I like my milk ice cold, thanks.
LUCY: Thanks for explaining. I hope and pray everything works out for your family. Those boys are blessed to have you watching out for them. What's the story on the Arabic school? Still curious.

Rev, I use Alltel, but I wouldn't recommend them. In fact, the only reason we went back to them after they tried to cheat me on some of my bills was when we moved to an(even more) rural area and they were the only ones that we could get half-decent reception with in a stretch of road up there I referred to as "the dead zone" because our other carrier would cut out there. But now that we moved back we are planning to go back to US Cellular once our contract with "allhel" is up.;) Had great service with US Cellular, and great reception other than that one area. When I told the US Cellular CSR(customer service rep) that we would need to cancel our contract, even though it wasn't up yet, she was very understanding and even went out of her way to find some other carriers I might want to try. Plus, even though our contract with them wasn't up, we still got a refund for the remainder of the month after disconnection and didn't have to pay early termination fees. Something I wouldn't count on Allhel to do which is why I am waiting for our contract to run out.
Homemaker, how are the storms in your area? We had a whopper last night(not the kind from Burger King, mind you). I had just gone into the store when the tornado sirens went off, so they ushered everyone into a back room there. One person said they had golf-ball size hail near here, and I saw that on the news later.
But all I could think of was poor Kai, who just a little while before had not wanted me to leave because she didn't want me to get hurt. Then she wanted to come with me to make sure I didn't get hurt. I'm glad I made her stay home with mommy next to the basement.
Then, after I got home we had another siren go off and so we went back to the basement. So, she is getting her fill of emergency procedures, I think.:D
More storms are predicted today, so she may get even more.
But, she's handling it like a trooper. She was play-acting like she was a weather person as I was checking the weather on tv today, using a little stick as a pointer on the weather map.
So, prayers for everyone in the path of these storms today.

STERLING: Where abouts do you live? I've forgotten.
IDELLE: I'm in mid-Western Maryland, about 2 1/2 hours from Salisbury. When I was a kid we used to go camping at Cherrystone Campground in Cape Charles the first week of summer vacation. I suppose we went there for about fifteen years straight from teh late 1960s through the early 1980s. It was right on the water, and you could rent a boat and go fishing in the bay, go crabbing from the pier (they had three), go clamming, or pick up oysters. They also had several swimming pools, miniature golf, and an outdoor roller rink. Remember how big roller skating was in the 70s? The campground was huge, and there was so much to do right there that we never left the whole week. We'd get there on a Saturday, stay until Friday, then travel an hour to Chincoteague and stay the weekend there so my dad, uncle and grandfather could go out on the bay and do serious fishing. They'd leave way before sunrise and return at dinertime. Pleasant memories.
MILLIE provided her restaurant's website a while back but I can't seem to find it. If MILLIE doesn't pop up soon I bet POOR HORATIO knows what it is.

Rev - we have Cingular (although we started out with AT&T Wireless) and we've had them for about 6 years or so. They've treated us pretty fair over the years.
Boo - Erin has homework in Kindergarten? WOW! My daughter just started in Kindergarten and seems to be doing all kinds of things she already knows how to do (letters, numbers, patterns, shapes, etc). The only thing she brings to do at home is read her library book for the week together - and she started reading around the time she turned 3, so that's really just time for us to spend doing something together. The social interaction, music, art and PE at school is good for her so that's a plus.

So much fun as a kid, then so relaxing as an adult. I always knew staff when I was younger, because we would go like 3 different weeks throughout the summer. That is too cool..loved to get your email and chat about it.
AFD: Birthday wishes to you..thanks for the welcome..

IDELLE: That's too cool. I believe that the summer of '82 or '83 was the last time we went to Cherrystone. That would have put me in 10th grade or something, so that's about right. I loved that place, too. Remember that general store? They had quite the selection of candy, cheap toys and comics, in case it rained. I can almost smell that bay air and those tall pine trees. It's funny, we went back there and camped with my brother and his family about six years ago. It was fun, but not the same. Of course the skating rink was gone. We didn't have any kids at the time. We may have to get back down there and try it again.
STERLING: Brrr. Sounds cold. But I guess they gotta keep it kinda chilly or all that cheese will go bad.
AFD: You're welcome!
REV: We have Cingular and are reasonably happy with them, though they are the only company we have ever had. We were going to switch a while back but found that you can't even get the plan we have anymore. We have always had the 30 minutes a month plan. When we asked companies about it, they either started talking to us like we were crazy or laughed. Seems no one only uses 30 minutes a month anymore. Personally, I use maybe five minutes a month.
I love the concept of cell phones for emergencies. Otherwise, they are a plague on civilization. I am so tired of following people on the interstate going 40 miles an hour as they weave and jerk, or saying excuse me to people in stores or on the street who I think are speaking to me but are actually talking on a phone. Yes, they are a pox indeed, but that's as far as I'm gonna go since I promised not to get on the soapbox for awhile.
Well, y'all have a Mayberry-like evening (that means a nice supper, maybe some strummin' on the gee-tar, and settin' on the front porch until you dose off. Now don't go disturbing thsoe dogs!)

Loved getting ice cream at the "rec hall". And playing video games and pool. Putt Putt was fun. Walks on the pier with summer flings! Nature trail in the back of the campground..Fun Fun Fun!!

Wow, AFD, sounds like your little one doesn't need homework! She must be one smart little cookie. I have to admit I didn't work with Erin and try to teach her to read or anything because when I tried I could tell that she really wasn't interested, yet, so I thought I would wait and see how she reacted to school. She told me yesterday on the way home from school, "Mom, I'm not ready for school"! I thought that was pretty funny coming from one so young. She is already starting to say things like, "I can't do anything right", and I hate to hear that. She doesn't seem to get the idea yet that she has to practice and master all these things. I think she will really enjoy it when she is able to read books (I hope).
Me-They, that is something I don't think we have talked about here; roller skating in the 70's....or maybe we have, don't remember. I was really lucky because when I was growing up, there was this mobile-tent roller rink (that's the best way I can describe it), and they used to come and set it up in a field right down the street from me so we skated alot in the summer. I remember it very fondly. We had FUN! Can you remember the old skates they gave you to use and how it seems like one wheel was always going the wrong way or there was a tack sticking up on the inside of the skate? I remember how hot it got, too. No air conditioning! I still remember the atmosphere so well, the colored lights, the sounds of the skates on the wood rink and the loud music, the smell of the oiled wood and old skates (and cigarettes)....anyone with me??

My childhood summers were a lot of playing outside, yup even in the Phoenix heat, but would run thru sprinkler etc. Also, we would go camping at a place called O'Neil Park in CA. Very similar to Me-ThEY and IDElle's place. Little country store, pine trees, bike rental, archery, swimmin hole etc. Such a grand post-wwII, pre-terrorist time! Idealyc really! Just plain fun.
BOO- to answer a LONG AGO question of yours about taking the oegano daily, it's as a preventative. colds, flu, infections, etc. That has been on my mind but i always forget to bring it up, so I guess it's not too good for memory retention!haha
Also, your 1865 breakfast was great! Could you imagine having to REALLY do that each morning?
DWF- That ep was a great lesson in not hurting one's feelings wouldnt ya say!
MT- I agree about the phones. Emergencies yes, idle chatter, yuck! They even go off in church after an announcemet to turn them off!
Alyce, er Idelle, your home sounds like the one in Field of Dreams! Nice, real nice.

Hello again..
Got the kids to sleep and watching Mama's Family.. I loved that show.
Boo: if Erin is just now starting to say things like that, be thankful. My five year old has been saying things like that for a while..probably a year or so.. I cant do it, I am a yucky girl. NO body likes me, It makes you feel so horrible. And makes you question every move you've made with your kids. I really have to boost her self confidence and self esteem on some things it seems. But I think she is going to love school. She's been in preschool since she was 2 1/2..part time. So she is a school bug.. She was reading in Dick and Jane tonight. I am so thankful she has that interest in reading..I never did. I am actually afraid she will get bored in Kindergarten. We'll see in a couple of weeks. If she gets the teacher we want, she'll be fine..Anyway..I am rambling..

Evening Porch, it is so good to finally be back on my porch chatting with folks on the big porch, man the traffic is bad out there today! With State St. closed down, made it worse. I was late for my first appt. this morning because they had traffic stopped at the entrance to the big doings so they could get the giant Food City Shopping Cart around the turn. It is all kind of neat, but aggravating at the same time. Lucy most of those dogs at the campgrounds go to all the races with the people, so they are used to the noise. Tom you are welcome, that is a beautiful card. Idelle the folks tend to forget, I am in VA as well, but I'm in Bristol, where the state line is, so when they think of Bristol, they think of TN. I am 3 miles from the state line. Where in Va are you? Best get some things done, I'm beat tonight.

Hey, Elmer! Long time, no see. Glad you dropped by. To answer your question, Barney actually had three middle initials, depending on which episode you were watching. There was M. (Milton), P.(don't think a name was ever given) and O.(Oliver). A few years ago, we had a porchster who went by the name of MPO, a composite of the three initials. Now don't ask me to name the episodes where these are mentioned, because I can't. One was when Barney was showing Andy his old history book, and his name was written in it several times. I think that was Bernard P. Fife. Another had to do with a yearbook, and I'm not sure about the third. I'll bet somebody here can fill us in, though.
Well, my little "nap" turned into sleeping all afternoon, only waking when a friend called to ask me to go with her to dinner. Of course, I pulled on some shorts and a t-shirt, and we hit our favorite little Mexican cafe, had some really good food, and now I'm home. The Plum is delighted. Poor little thing has basically been in our bedroom since Tuesday afternoon, when I left for work. It's work, sleep, work again and then the "nap" today - poor puppy. But now I'm off until next Monday night, so she'll be happy. She's such a sociable little thing.
Well, have a great evening, friends. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

Well we got some more rain today here in SC.
Thanks for the coments on the cell carriers. The only reason I may change from verizon is we can't get service here at my house. Traveling the way I do, verizon has been fine. But cingular has put a tower just about a mile from our house and it has full service here. So I think I may be changing over. From what I've heard from other traveling ministers, cingular has served them very well. I do know they now have more towers than any other network.
Well folks I think I'm going to call it a night. Prayers for you all and have a Jesus filled night!

I'm a Cingular person, too. Have used it since it was AT&T, back in the late '80s. I still have my dear husband's old original phone - one of those big, boxy Motorola phones, about 8-9" tall, with a 4" antenna. It has a flat base, you can sit it down on its bottom. I hated my last Motorola flip phone, though. Tiny screen, washed out in daylight so you couldn't read it, ringer very soft, couldn't hear it, just a loser. Replaced it this past Monday, another Motorola, and I love it. It cost the sum total of $20. Pretty much a bargain, I think.
My son uses Sprint, and he likes them very much. He travels all over this end of the country, and never seems to have a problem.
Sugarplum says she doesn't use a cell phone, they're hard to hold when you don't have thumbs. She just tells me to tell you folks 10-4. --Romeena
