August 19, 2006 - Msg 44376: PH, your education was worth every penny. Wonder where Floyd is? He's going to be upset when he sees this mess. He's so careful to keep everything clean and neat. He and his family are probably on a well-earned vacation. Mavis, I was wondering. What would your sister do if you were to tell her you don't want her to feel like she's being cheated, and therefore you're willing to "trade settlements" with her - you take what was given to her and she takes what was awarded to you? I'll bet she'd change her tune quickly. I suspect she knows how well her bread is buttered. Lucy, I'm glad Nicholas is with you. I'm wondering about Michaela, though. Do you think it would be best to let her remain with her psycho mom until the woman does something outrageous and CPS steps in and removes the girl from her mother? A few weeks in a foster home might make your home look like heaven to her. I'm afraid if you force custody now she's going to fight you forever. Just wondering..... Project people, watch for an email from me, coming to you soon, probably tomorrow. As you might have noticed, we may have a small problem. A little research is indicated, and will be done. August 20, 2006 - Msg 44383: Good morning. I have been staying at my sister's house the last couple of days because..get this, I cannot stand the smell here at my folk's house. It seems that there is something dead somewhere in this house, I am guessing a rat because we found a dead one under the washing machine. I think one of the neighbors put out some rat poison or something and a rat or two came over here and died! Problem is, we can't find whatever it is. Bruce has been in the attic, taken off paneling, crawled under the house, you name it, but we can't find what is causing the smell and I am about to go nuts. I have opened all the windows, lighted many candles, used every kind of deodorizer known to man but the stench is still there, and if you know what something dead smells like in 100 degree weather, you know what a problem I am having. My dad had to go out of town to Houston today so I am having to stay here with my mom. The smell seems to be getting a little better each day but I can still smell it, especially when the air conditioner kicks in. Bruce looked all through the furnace, etc. and found nothing. I called an exterminator yesterday and all he told me is, you just have to find it. I don't know what else to do, it is really stressing me out and the men in this house keep telling me, "It's not that bad"..well, it IS that bad and I guess I'm gonna have to move out to prove it to them. I don't know what to do next.-Boo

First, turn off the air conditioning. Then close all of the duct vents and see if that improves the smell. If it does, then the dead animal is probably in one of those ducts. Good luck checking both the exhaust and return duct work. Also check inside the flue pipe between the furnace and the chimney (or outside exhaust). - - - To Tom Msg 44390, some people just don't care about what they steal, even if they are religious items. - - - from Poor Horatio

Also, maybe Seans hurting arm is just from writing again as the school year starts, using those muscles again. Prayers contimue for all. MDC hope this posts

August 20, 2006 - Msg 44397: Thanks, Poor Horatio, I told my husband that it is stronger when the air conditioner is blowing so, while I was at the pool with the kids, he started looking and somehow, he messed up the air conditioner and it's not working...so, it's really hot. The good news is that it smells alot better in here so I think we can deduce that the problem is indeed somewhere in the ducts. We'll get there. Believe it or not, I can handle the heat (90+) better than that horrid smell. BWB, I'm really glad you enjoyed church this morning. Prayer continue for you, as requested...MDC, wish I had a bloodhound. I went and got a cat to put out there, hoping it would keep the rats out. It was a grown cat so I figured it would be ok. Well, it's gone. Either ran off or got chased off by someone's dog that should be in a fence. Makes me mad. It has been kind of a difficult weekend! As far as Sean's arm goes, I think that the writing had something to do with it but he informed me recently that he did alot of vacuming at a friend's house with an old vacume on carpet, so it was really hard to push. I think that is probably the problem, he hasn't complained about it all weekend. I feel like I am melting as I sit here. The fan isn't even helping much. Hope I can fix this air conditioner soon...Boo

August 20, 2006 - Msg 44417: Hey, Spot, check your email again. --Romeena

August 20, 2006 - Msg 44418: Boo, I'm glad your problems are resolved. I, too, am curious as to how it was done. My son and DIL in Florida occasionally have a problem with what they call "roof rats" down there. The things climb the palm trees which are a staple in everyone's landscaping, and get on the roof. From there, any tiny hole is enough to give them access. Once when I was out there, several had died in their attic, apparently from a neighbor putting out poison. (I hate poison, even for rats. Once it enters the food chain, you never know what it will kill, and besides, it's a terrible way for any creature to die.) Anyway, my son picked up two of them by sleeving about six newspaper bags over his hand, picking up the mess and turning the bag down over it, effectively bagging up the rat. Then he spotted the rest and decided the bags wouldn't be enough, so he "called the man". And you're right, Boo, the stench is unbelievable.

I completely agree with you about "The Passion" movie. I saw it at the theater, and I own a copy, but have not watched it, for the same reason you stated. I don't want to get to the point that I'm not shocked and overwhelmed by it. I may watch it again in a year or two, but not right now.

Well, I'm off to bed. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44422: Prayers this morning for your visit to the cardiologist, Homemaker and thank you for those kind words.

RO and PH, I'm not sure what happened but yesterday morning while I was home and Bruce was at church, I tried turning off the air conditioner for awhile to see what would happen. It got alot better and when I turned it back on, the smell was still gone. The problem was, I told Bruce about the smell and he went around checking the furnace, etc again. He somehow tripped the breaker and didn't know that the breaker for the air conditioner is separate from the others (since this isn't our house, he had no clue). Anyway, he called the man and the man found the breaker and we are nice and cool now. I really think that all that terrible smell somehow came from that one rat under the washing machine and the smell just got in the vents or something. I don't know. I did some serious praying just prior to turning off the air conditioner! All is ok now AND the cat came back!

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44426: Good afternoon everyone. I see we had a little trouble on the porch this weekend. Thanks for clearing it up, FLOYD. And I nominate POOR HORATIO for Official Troublechecker.

HM: Fill us in on how your appointment goes.

LUCY: Our daughter attended Awana for the last two years and both kids will be attending this year. We you wondering looking for a recommendation? Because if you were, I do. For young kids it’s a the fun of scouts plus the spiritual stuff. I know that Nora has really enjoyed it and learned a lot. They memorize a Bible verse a week, so she knows more by heart than I do! Also, prayers for your family.

BOO: Rats! I forgot what I was going to say to you…. Oh, yeah, I’m glad that little problem got solved. Not much worse smelling than that. How’s Sean’s arm? Glad to hear that school has started okay for him.

MAVIS: Sorry to hear about your sister. May I be blunt for a second? Your sister is obviously engaging is bad behavior, and there’s probably some big emotional cause or maybe it’s clinical. Either way, it seems you’ve been playing Twister bending over backwards to save a relationship that she seems to care very little about. What you are doing for her has a name—enabling. Her bad, possibly sick, behavior is being enabled by your making sure everything goes smoothly for her. It’s obvious to me that you love your sister and want her to remain a part of your life. But at what cost to you both? The best thing may be for you to force her to face reality, as difficult as it may be for both of you. My prayers go out to you.

SPOT: The garage sounds cool. We hope to build one in about five years.

BWB: Glad that you enjoyed church. Did the preacher preach on sin? Now there’s a topic you can’t hear too much about.

We had a good weekend. Chad’s party went well, even though we had a couple of cancellations. The kids enjoyed playing with their cousins.

Should we be worried about AFD? It's been quite awhile since she's checked in. Hope everything is going well for her, baby and family. ASA: I know she frequents other boards that you do; have you heard from her lately?

How's it going MILLIE and DIXIE? Great news about the tv, TOM. hey to COLT, BIG MAUDE, ROMEENA and all.

Well, back to the salt mines. I’ll check back in later.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44429: You're funny, Me-They!

Sean's arm seems to be fine now, thanks. The house still has a little of the rat smell but is tolerable. I burn candles constantly and carry a can of Febreeze with me.

I think AFD is probably just very busy with the new baby and probably not sleeping as much, you know how that goes...How is your wife? Is she still having those headaches?

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44430: Just thought I'd drop by real quick - sorry I've been out of the loop for so long. Been busy with Reagan and getting Evie off to school. Hope you all are doing well - and thanks for asking after me.

Prayers for all.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44431: Thanks for dropping in AFD and I'm glad things are well, if busy. Give us an update on your bundle when time permits. I certainly understand your time issues--we're dealing with the very same ones. Evie's middle name wouldn't be Joy, would it?

BOO: Looks like you were correct about AFD. You're carrying a can of Febreeze around? And they call me compulsive. Well, I guess one way or another, the smell will eventually go away. I had a baby opossum die between the interior and exterior walls of my old shed several summers ago. It gave me an excuse not to pull the lawn mower out for a few weeks. Glad Sean's arm is feeling better.

Me-They

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44432: Hey, AFD, glad you are doing well. Thanks for checking in.

Me-They, when it comes to bad smells, I am very compulsive about getting rid of them. I'm telling you the truth, I was more stressed over this whole rat thing that I have been over anything in awhile. I wanted to cry more than once, sounds crazy but it really got to me. I'm funny that way. When we first moved in here with my parents, I went crazy cleaning and painting and even started ripping up carpet. There is not a stitch of carpet in this house. They had a dog inside and the carpet just reeked. Luckily my parents didn't mind the changes and the house looks and smells much better. We even put down Pergo in the den and its easy to keep clean and fresh! They still have a little dog in the house but she doesn't smell. I am determined to have no carpet in my new house and will take measures to make everything easy to clean. For instance, no grout in showers and bathrooms. We have such high humidity here on the coast that mildew always grows on grout, no matter what you do. I can't bear mildew. We also have hard water so those water spots get on everything and are impossible unless you completely wipe down all surfaces after showering. I will have no shower doors. I am planning to build showers that you walk into that are deep and have no doors. Ok enough of that rambling...pass the Xanax.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44433: Pardon me all - I forgot to thank you all for the congrats and everything when I announced the baby's arrival. Thank you so much.

MT: Actually, Evie's middle name is Rose (and Evie rhymes with Chevy - unlike the Evie Joy on TAGS), Reagan's "second name" is Joy, so I guess both my girls have a TAGS connection. Reagan is doing well - eating all the time. She seems to be putting weight on faster than Evie did, as she already is getting chubby legs and a double chin. She sleeps pretty good through the night - usually about 3-5 hrs at a time. That's a small break for me, but it still wears me out. Hope mama and Miss Veda are doing well.

Hey Boo ! Glad you got your "smell" taken care of.

Well, little one is crying! Talk to you all later.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44435: BOO: I hear you, sister. I am so with about thorough cleanings. I have mixed feelings about carpet. One one hand, I know I know it harbors bacteria, dander, mites, other allergens and off-gases even if it's kept spotlessly clean. On teh otehr hand, if kept vacummed and cleaned, it can appear cleaner by hiding the dirt. The obessive part of me wants the "real" clean (no carpet), the compulsive part of me wants the "appearance" of clean so that's one less thing I have to worry about. So, we have carpet in the kid's room and den (which was an addition we added two years ago so the carpet is new) and wood or vinyl tile in the rest. I like the idea of Pergo. Is that a bad choice for a kitchen? Sorry, the Xanax is all gone. Hopefully, I only have to take the med for another four months.

Well, y'all take care.

Me-They
"Mildew! You can't expect me to do anything about mildew!"--Clara

Speaking of Xanax, I took it for awhile. I liked it because it's effects were almost immediate and I could just take it when I needed it. I didn't feel any siude effects. However, it can be habit forming so is usually used for a short term. Now, I am taking a long-term med that builds up in your system over time. The trouble is, it makes me feel tired in the evenings and sleep much harder (I used to be a very light sleeper). I don't like that since the Mrs. works nights. Used to be, if one of the kids even breathed hard at night I'd hear it on the monitor. Now, they have to call me several times to wake me up. No, I don't care for that.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44436: I have no idea why that just happened. That last paragraph should have been above my sign-off. The Count, ya think?

AFD: Yep. Both are good, though the Mrs. isn't as blessed as you are in the sleep department. The first two were sleeping through the night by about 9-10 weeks, though, so hopefully Veda will follow that lead. For my sake, too--I'll be the one getting up in the middle of the night after the Mrs. goes back to work in October.

Hey, REV!

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44437: Boo how funny you are like that about smells, I am the same way, can't stand it! I have all my dogs in the house & get stressed if I think it stinks. All my friends tell me that they can't believe I have dogs in here cause they can't smell them. Thank goodness, I can't stand it stinking. Now as for the cleaning.....well, that is not done as much as it should be, dusting, vacumming & such. Me-They I appreciate blunt, that is how I am & like it when others are like that as well, it's why I came here & posted that (well, the advice & prayers help too) I do realize I am enabling her, I know that in my head, it's my heart that don't want to listen. She has been a totally different person since Mom passed away, so I know that is a big part of what her problem is. Not having Mom here. I did decide I wasn't doing it anymore, I mean, I hardly talk to her now as it is, so might as well not have a sister at this point. We were all so close when Mom was alive, it's like I lost Mom & my sister at the same time & now, Jacob is all I have in this world. Thanks for reminding me of something I already knew. Spot boy that was close up there, you did almost let the cat out of the bag, thanks to Floyd for fixing that as well, ain't he just the cats? Best get some bookwork done, been behind all day today & just got back from an appt at the vet's office with my "kids" Later Porchsters.

Boo_ I hear ya on the hard water!! Phx area water is so hard that EVERY time we boil water in a saucepan, the white filmy deposit is there until you boil straight vinegar in it! One thing we DO have is a Filter on our shower. Got one at Whole Foods that fits right at the showerhead. Only thing is, the "yearly" filter has to be changed about every three months. Also have a filter at the kitchen sink. I think you will like the cultured marble. My wife says it's the ONLY "cultured" thing in the house besides her! HA! We just squeegee it down and pour on the "Clean Shower."
We are having a new cultured sink top made right now for the master bath where we are doing some remodeling.
Colt- So what field is your GD outstanding in?
(I set ya up for that one! ha)
We had a great ride in your Best of Show 62 chevy!
BTW, I FELT about 219 at my 30th reunion a few years back! teehee
APB for Warren! Maybe he's a student and is back in class these days.
AFD- thanksfor checking in! Glad all is OK.
MeThey-Nothin like a good party!
Next time we have a rat problem, Mayor Colt will issue clothespins for all noses! haha
Finally, THANKS Floyd, alias Allan, for fixing those broken floorboards.

One of the biggest in the state of Florida I do believe my Aunt said. She and her husband have been going there for 20 some years, so she ought to know!!! I can't wait til next week, to hear the rest of the sermon.

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44443: Well, it's 5pm and the kids are fed. Hubby is working late and I am on my last load of laundry. It would be impossible to describe how hot it is in that laundry room in the garage with the dryer going all day! I want to take a shower but I have to wait for that last load to finish because when I go out there I will sweat like a sailor (is that an expression?...or is it swear like a sailor?..). Anyway, got alot done around here today, everything is clean and smells pretty good. The only thing I didn't do that I wanted is change the sheets on the beds but I think I will wait until tomorrow.

Mavis, you must be very diligent to keep the dogs clean and nice-smelling. It is very hard to do that. Dogs just have a natural dog smell that is hard to cover, I think. I don't think poodles have that smell, do they? I really like my new cat and wish I could keep her inside but my son is allergic. She is so sweet and don't smell a bit. Mavis, do you ever have cat clients? Is it a good thing to bathe cats, or is it even possible?

MDC, thanks for your opinion on the cultured marble. I have only heard good things about it. The only thing negative is that it can scratch. Sure seems easy to keep clean and is affordable. I don't want to use formica because it just looks so utilitarian, I think. I know exactly what you mean about boiling water, that white stuff sticks to your pans, it's terrible. I am sure I will put in some kind of house-wide water filter for the sake of our health; probably a reverse osmosis filter of some kind in the kitchen and then a good charcoal filter for the rest of the house. That is a must down here!

Think I will go check on that last laundry load,

Boo

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44452: Storming BAD......SPOT

August 21, 2006 - Msg 44453: We had storms yesterday pretty bad here Spot but we needed it. Gave the ground a good soaking for sure. I wanted to update you all on my friend Judy. They weaned her off some of the sedation & pain pills yesterday to see what kind of reactions she would have to stimuli & so far it looks pretty promising. The part of her brain that was damaged looks now as if it won't need surgery after all. So keep the prayers coming. Judy is a fighter & does possess many of the traits of our beloved dogs she fights so hard for. She is a huge ambassador for doing away with Breed Specific Legislation around the country. I know alot of you have dogs that aren't listed, but it does affect all of us dog owners. There is one town in Ohio, (can't remember the name right off) that has bans against ANY breed of dog that is over 100 pounds, they will be confiscated & put to sleep if caught in that town. Won't be long until they tell us we can't have any kind of dog cause they say so. Anyway Judy's website is BSL Workshop for those of you that are interested. Off my BSL soapbox (for now) Things here are still going pretty rough, first my sister, now my S.O. I'm just tired of being aggravated all the time, think I'll just curl up with my dogs & forget people all together. I am tired of being called names I can't write here on the porch, but they remind with witch. Guess since that seems to be the collective opinion of those that are supposed to love me, I'll learn to live with it. Off to bed now, thanks for letting me rant a little.
