August 12, 2006 - Msg 44057: Hi, friends! Just a quick run-by. Just took DIL, her mom and our grandsons to the airport. Their flight is earlier than mine - I waited too long to decide to go and couldn't get on the same flight. So, I leave this evening.

Anyway, just wanted to tell the "project" participants that the proceedings are in the ground, er, in the mail, that is. By the time I return next Saturday, it may be a done deal. Depends on how long it takes the snail to make the trip. We did very well, should be able to complete the project quite nicely. You people are just the greatest. You're, well, you're the cats!

August 12, 2006 - Msg 44058: Thanks Romeens, we think you are the greatest too. May you have a safe and joyful trip.

Just taking a break from the chouse cleaning, like Maude. The work is never done, is it?

We are having a few close friends of Erin's over for a little swim party since we didn't have a birthday party for her on her birthday. I am putting out a little pool and we are bar-b-queing some chicken and hotdogs. Sure is hot today so we are waiting until 5pm. We also have tater salad and baked beans, a chocolate cake and ice cream, so ya'll come on over and eat with us (sure wish you really could).

BREAK TIME OVER!

Mavis, I'll be looking for that game on tv. I have a feeling that the skins will be a force this season. It would be right on track for Joe Gibbs. But Parcells in his 4th year in Dallas is ready to go too. I think we may see some good old days kind of rivalry between the two. What do you think? I'm not a Cowboys fan but I do like Bill Parcells as far as his coaching ability. Him and Gibbs are the best.

Romeena, What project were you working on?

Millie, My prayers continue for you.

Boo, Even though I dislike house cleaning, I can't stand a messy house. Ever since I was 12 or 13, I couldn't stand a messy room! If one of my rowdy freind's jumped on my bed, I would FREAK out! It's so un-tidey looking.

*Mavis, GO BRONCOS GO! Im not as much of a Football fan as I used to be, but Im a Denver Broncos fan. My #2 & 3 teams are The New York Jets and The Minnisota Vikings.

Tom, I really enjoyed that Cancer is limited piece. Very good motivation for someone who has it. Well, I shouldn't say that. I've never had it. I just think it would help someone out.

Hey BWB!

Nice to be on my rocker again. It was starting to get dusty.

My news? Well yesterday was a fun day. I had a freind over from Vancouver, with some freinds from here in Victoria, and we played bochie for awhile outiside. Wonderfull dinner! We had steak's, Brocalie with melted cheese, Potatoes, Carmalized onion's and Garlic. As Andy would say, Mmmmm, Mm! The bad news was that I got stung by a wasp. OUCH!!! It's better today though. At about 11:45pm I watched another "Dick Van Dyke" episode! Very funny. The next episode is supposed to be Mary Tyler Moore's breakthrough on the show! Yippie!

See ya!

August 13, 2006 - Msg 44075: Afternoon Porch! Asa I'm thinking the same as you, might be watching some football this year the way it used to be. I can't wait for my Redskins to whip them cowboys! Saw a piece in the paper that a Native American group is once again protesting the Redskin name & symbol. I couldn't imagine them having another name, hope it don't happen. BWB is it an old country song? I think the Statler Brothers did a song called "Kate" DWF sorry you got stung by a wasp, they sure can hurt can't they. Boo as you noticed, I did wear my little pearl earrings, but then so did Asa so we matched. Where is Poor Horatio? do we need to send out an APB for him? August 13, 2006 - Msg 44077: Glad you guys wore your earrings so I wasn't the only one....didn't want to look too worldly.

I am thinking Poor Horatio might be busy with his work right now.

I am SO excited about school starting tomorrow (doing a victory dance)! Hate to pull them out of bed early tomorrow and get them ready, not to mention pry Erin off my leg when we get to school, BUT I am sure looking forward to a little bit of freedom. This will be the first time in a very long time. After highschool I went right into college that summer, then after college worked fulltime as a nurse until my son was born 11 years ago. I quit working when he was a toddler and became a stay-at-home mom and I homeschooled him until he was nine, by then I had another toddler and now they will both be in school and I will actually have some time for me. It's been a long time coming and I can't wait. Of course I still have all the work to do around here and my parents to look after but at least I can leave the house alone for a few hours. Bruce is about to put me to work, though, picking out things for the house. I have alot of pricing and shopping to do. Lots of decisions to make. Does anyone have cultured marble in their bathrooms (tubs, showers or vanities)? I have heard some good things about it being economical and easy to clean...just wondering. Also, do any of you have decorative concrete anywhere in your home? They are using it on floors, counters, patios, etc. They can stain it or even score it and make it look like tile. I am trying to decide what to put in the bedrooms because I don't want carpet and I don't want to go to the expense of hardwood throughout the house. I want hardwood in the family room, dining room. You guys know I covet any advice you might have.

Hope you all have a nice evening.

Boo

August 13, 2006 - Msg 44078: Ok, here is something I don't think we have talked about here on the porch..do any of you like to shop at thrift stores or flea markets for bargains? I do once in awhile but I don't often buy anything. Well, the other day I went to the local thrift store and there was this rocking chair. It sat low to the ground so I tried it out and it was perfect. It looked great and was in great shape, too. I think it's oak. They were only asking 29.99 for it so I bought it and have been enjoying it. I turned it over today and found the stamp saying Nichols and Stone on it, so I looked it up on the web. I found out it came from Mass. and was hand crafted, all hardwood. Really a nice chair. They didn't give the price of such rockers on the site but they offered a catalog. Anyway, I was lucky that day because I really love the way the chair sits so I think I will make it my official "porch" rocker and sit in it when I visit the porch.

Any of the rest of you ever get any great flea market finds??

August 14, 2006 - Msg 44091: I learned all I wanted to know about Bocce ball by playing Elf Bowling. It is great fun and a little tricky. Kind of like horseshoes 'cept you use balls - closest to the pin gets the points. Here in southern Indiana we have a great game called corn hole using bags filled with popcorn throwing them at a small target that has a hole (get it - corn hole). It is similar to horseshoes as well.

My kids went to school today and I am supposed to go tomorrow unless I can get a doctor's appt. Haven't been feeling very well now for some time and a night of being nauseated for no apparent reason is enough - that and dizzy. I am thinking that I am in the beginning stages of Meneire's.

August 14, 2006 - Msg 44094: Good morning everyone! And a beautiful day it is, too.

ROMEENA: Have a great trip. Thank YOU for getting the project together. You beat everything, you know that?

BOO and MAVIS: Three things I'm not partial to on women: earings, nail polish, and open-toed shoes. I have decided to extend these dislikes to men as well given ASA's choice of Sunday wear.

BOO: How's that freedom thing working for you today? I hope that all goes well with the house shopping. Sorry, there's no cultured anything in our house except maybe my wife. As for the concrete, we were actually considering it for our kitchen. Friends who have it in their kitchen (it looks like tile) talked us out of it. They said standing and working on it really does effect your legs after a while. And, if you drop something, you can consider it broken before it hits the floor. As far as concrete floors in the bedrooms, it sounds awfully cold. And playing on them in the kids rooms might be a little iffy; I remember banging my head on the floor more than a few times wrestling around in my bedroom as a kid. Just something to think about.

HM: Nice website. What is that you might have? Prayers anyway.

Man, school starts mightly early in some parts. School here doesn't start until the last week in August. When I went to school it started the day after Labor Day.

Well, that's all the time I have this morning for chit chat. I'll stop by later to chew yours ears some more. Hey to MAUDE, STERLING, ASA and anyone else loafing around this morning. Where's HORATIO, AFD, DIXIE, FRED GOSS and the others (you know who you are!)?

This year, they are allowing the girls to wear slacks (only one style and color from the uniform company). Nora tried some on but didn't want us to get any. She wants to stick with the jumpers and skirts.

August 14, 2006 - Msg 44096: Good morning, everyone! Boo, that rocker you bought sounds great! I think you got a real bargain. I love flea markets - don't care much for thrift stores, usually, though I do like Big Lots. They have neat yard art and stuff. I got some of the cutest little flowerbed frogs and such there. I like garage sales, too, but I like to go to the ones in neighborhoods nicer than mine! You get better stuff there. My favorite is flea markets, though. There's a huge one out toward Tyler, TX, in a little town called Canton. It meets once a month, and it would take you two full days to tour the whole thing. Wonderful fun. Up in Indiana, there's a very large and nice one at Shipshewana. I've gone there with my mom-in-law and sister-in-law and had a fine time. I collect the old Fiesta pottery, and used to buy it at flea markets all the time, but not anymore. It's gotten too expensive. My only hope now is to find it at a garage sale where the seller doesn't know how collectible it is. And no, I don't tell them. All's fair in love and garage-saleing. I once bought a Fiesta mug for .50 that was worth $12. (heeheehee) Of course, as my husband said, my Fiesta is worth nothing, because I won't sell it.

Well, guess I'll go join my friend at the pool. The others have gone off on an excursion we weren't interested in, so we two grandmas stayed behind with the 2-yr old. Hmm, let's see. Sit by the pool with a big glass of tea and watch an adorable 2 yr old play. Tough life, right?

Guys I have to tell ya'll something excinting. Remember my friend Linda who was dying and the Lord healed her? Well, we had another miracle in our church this week. Robert has been fighting cancer for several years and had numerous tumors in his liver. A month or so ago he went for treatment of the tumors but they could only do half of them, there was so many. They told him to go home, recuperate and come back so they could work on the remaining tumors. Well, he went to San Antonio today to begin treatment and when they checked all the tumors that were there to be treated were gone, all of them. All that remained were parts of the dead tumors that were treated last month. Amazing! We are just "pickled tink"! We are a small church, only about 150 on Sunday, so to have two recent miracles is just a wonderful blessing. Just wanted to share the good news with all of you.

Me-They, I did enjoy my freedom but had too much to do, still. Maybe I will take it easy tomorrow.

My 5 yr old loved school! Hoorah! She can't wait to go back and Sean likes his class and teacher.

Better go...

August 14, 2006 - Msg 44113: Boo: That is so wonderful!!! I'll still be praying for him, and everyone on the porch.

God truely works miracles.

I called my Aunt, Boo. She didn't have anything to say, accept that all of the family was such a louse, and that she hated all of them. I don't understand, I just don't. She's been this mean all of her life, or as long as I have known her, and to think she's on the verge of death, and still shows no remorse to anyone. I said my I love you's, and told her that I hoped that she setteled her problems with God, soon, and I told her that ya'll were praying for her, and she said that ahe was glad. I hope that she knows the Lord. It's scary to think of how many people don't.

Murmmuring statements like "Always put your name at the top of your papers, Raise your hand before you speak, No it's not time for break, We'll leave for lunch in 10 minutes, and Later..." yes... I can see her emerging it's Miss Dixie Belle Edwards of the 5th grade pit of doooooooooooooooooooom!

Once you find out the answer, you may not have much time left to resolve this issue with your Aunt, considering how sick she is. And you might regret that for the rest of your life. So it's up to you.

Spot - my husband and I do the song thing when we are driving. You would be amazed at how much our 8 and 9 year old know about 70's/early 80's rock. They really like Queen (We will rock you!) and the soundtrack from Joe Dirt.

Take care all. . .

Have a good day and lets meet for lunch at
The Diner. see you folks at noon. Big Maude

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44154: SPOT, to answer your question about Sarah's; last night I thought Millie could use someone to talk to so I asked her to come over to Sarah's chatroom for awhile.

Queen, what a cheezy group (no offense to any Queen lovers! ha). We used to love 'em when I was in high school, though.

Hope your kiddos have a good day at school, Maude and that you settle into the routine quickly.

I have to wake up the kids soon and get them ready for school, then the errands begin...always plenty to do. Hope you all have a pleasant morning. Continued prayers for Millie today (and all of you).

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44155: Good Mornin' Porch,
Its a bit cloudy here in Atlanta. I wonder if it'll rain. We're in a deficeit so the rain would be welcomed by our farmers. I'm still trying to get used to waking up early. My body naturally wakes up at 7 or 7:30, but I can lie in bed until 8. Now I have to get up at 6:50. Bryson looked at me this morning as if, are you kidding me? I wish I had my camera.
Boo- I'm loving the freedom myself. Stepkids are gone and Bryson's in school. I have so much cleaning and organizing to do that technically I'm really working, but at least I'm doing it by myself. My grandmother is an antiques dealer in Ky and I grew up going to flea martkets, estate sales, and thrift stores. You can find really good bargains at those, such as your chair. A year ago Bryson was playing baseball. I went into a local Goodwill and there was a wooden plaque with Bryson's name burned into it that held baseball items! He has an unusal name and it was cool to find, especially for $1. I live in an apartment so I can't help you with the fixture issue, but I know a good bit about colors and stuff since I'm in fashion.
DWF- Thank you for asking about Bry's first day of school. He loved it! He hates having to go to the trailer because its so small, but that's about it. His school has over 900 kids and it wasn't built to hold that many so the 3rd grade and some special needs kids go to trailers that they call "cottages". Believe me, its a trailer.
Asa- Yes, I believe school is starting early. They are giving more breaks though. Plus, I believe they are slowly working towards year round schooling. I still haven't decided how I feel about that. What's the porch's view?
Homemaker- What did the doctor say? Could you be pregnant?
Big Maude- Your comment on behaving reminds me of one of my grandmother's sayings, Be Sweet now, ya hear?
Me-They- Out of curiosity, why don't you like ornamentation on women? Even if its tastefully done? My husband doesn't either. He prefers the "natural look", or so he says. When I'm made up he's certainly not complaining! There are some studies that show if you're wearing nail polish with certain chemicals that they can leak into your blood stream? I only buy nail polish at whole foods or the hard candy brand. I like the thought of uniforms. Doesn't your daughter go to a christian school?
Poor Horatio- Thank you for that link. It was so touching that I'm going to pass it to my friends. What did you take away from it?
Spot- I'm surprised that you're using carpet with your animals. Have you considered hardwood floors?
Tom- Your poem was beautiful, again. You have a wonderful talent.
Dixie- Okay, so what's up with the date? Where did you go? What did you do? What did you wear?
BWB- Everyone in this world wants to hear that they are loved. Its wonderful you told your Aunt that. In the South, there is a saying that I try to adhear to: Kill them with kindness. You can never go wrong.
Millie- I'm so sorry your sad. I'm praying for you, my friend. Please let us know what we can do. Do you have family near by to help?
MDC- You seem to have a strong faith and I admire you for that. My stepkids are in your city, and they still say its too hot to do anything.
Well, after my novelette I believe I'll go. Bryson's room looks like a tornado after the kids left. Y'all have a wonderful day. I will be able to check back more often now that I have some freedom.
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy Matthews

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44156: Morning Boo,Millie,TOM,Horatio and all...let meet at Cracker Barrell and let Mil buy!....im on my way...SPOT

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44157: Hey Lucy!...will you drive the breakfast bus?...SPOT

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44158: Boo, Big Maude, and Lucy, have I missed something? You just make me wonder because school has already started for your kids, but Kai's school doesn't start until after Labor Day. Weird. I don't know, starting school mid-August just seems weird to me, but then I grew up here too and couldn't imagine starting the school year that early. Or maybe your schools let out earlier for summer?

Speaking of school, MDC, no Kai won't be going to her old school, as that was just a pre-school she went to. The good news is that several of her classmates(whom she remembers) from her preschool year here are going to be in the same class as she is, so it won't be a totally new experience. There will be some familiar faces there.

Well, better get going. The Man is delivering our new dryer today(yippee - I get to do laundry)pretty soon.

Millie, hope you feel better.

-Sterling Holobyte

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44159: Good morning everyone! It's going to rain today and we need a little rain.

LUCY: It's not that I don't like ornamentation on women; a little make-up and jewelry can add zip to a "look." But I don't like heavy or bold make-up; I prefer the subtle, or natural, look. I don't like open-toed shoes because I think adult feet, in general, are gross and would rather they stay out of sight. The flip-flop and Birkenstock fads have really dealt me a heavy blow. I also don't care for earrings because they attract attention to yet another less-attractive body part. And, for some reason, I just find most earings funny-looking. The nail polish thing is just preference as well, though clear or natural-looking nail polish looks quite well on women. So, it's not really a value-thing or anything, just a personal preference thing. And, yes, my daughter attends a wonderful Christian school.

SPOT and BOO: Trivia: Who makes the rockin' woerld go 'round? (Remember that one?)

BWB: Gotta back BOO up on that comment.

MILLIE: Please check in and let us know how your're doing and if we can do anything for you.

DIXIE: You mean you didn't march that young man out here on the porch and let us grill him good before he took you out?

STERLING: My kids don't start until late August/early September, either. Maybe it's a regional thing?

Prayers all around...

August 15, 2006 - Msg 44164: Hi Lucy - the doctor is sending me to a cardiologist and a neurologist. Luckily, not an ob-gyn - had that plumbing partially removed last year. As of right now - I have a heart murmur and an irregular heartbeat that he thinks is causing me some lightheadedness, etc. The neurologist is to determine if I have Meneire's Disease which is an inner ear problem that can make you lightheaded, vertigo, vomit, lose focus and concentration. I will be okay and the Lord is good and faithful so I am not worried. I just need some more energy back.

On the issue of school, Kentucky parents have joined together with a petition to get school to start later. It is called Save Our Kentucky Summers. Schools are being forced to start earlier due to the amount information that is required by the state to be covered in a year. Most states have goals and objectives that teachers must cover within that year. Some states require the teachers to document each time they cover a mandate. The paper trail for teachers is becoming unbelievable - more paperwork is forced than teaching at times. My kids (3rd and 4th grade) have a 20 minute recess once a day and 20 minutes for lunch. The rest of the time is in the classroom. The other thing forcing schools to start earlier is the testing information they receive - the US is compared to other countries and our education is at times "sub-standard". The other countries also weed out the weak students by high school and get them into vocational programs that will support them while the brainiacs go onto higher education levels. The US does not weed out anyone - so the lower test scores for those students who do do as well are averaged in with those that do do well - therefore, making the US seem dumb in comparison.
Okay - off of my soapboax. . .I just know about the politics of my job.

Off to get something done - maybe some Ibuprofen for this dang headache.
