June 27, 2006 - Msg 41521:
Thank you Mavis, that is very good advice. Funny, my counselor told me the same thing yesterday, haha. He said I need to know the difference between concern and worry and realize that my control over a situation equals my level of responsibility. So, if I have no control over something, I shouldn't worry about what "might happen" in the future. He said to be concerned about something is to examine it and to worry is to try to look into the future and imagine what bad things might happen that you have no control over. He also said that love does not equal worry. I can remember growing up that my mom was a big worrier and she used to tell me that if she loved someone, she had to worry about them (to her that WAS love). So I am learning and trying...I actually had kind of a mental revelation this morning while I was reading back over a post Me-They sent yesterday about how even though God forgives us if we repent, we still have the consequences to face. One of my stressors has been the pain of knowing what the parents of the boy will go through and I am now realizing that what I need to focus on is that the boy will get help. His parents said that no matter how they questioned him, he looked them straight in the eye and denied that he had done anything. That is concerning because if at this age he can look his parents in the eye and lie about it, no telling what will happen if he gets away with it. I read somewhere that when someone does something like this and is confronted but never has to be accountable for what happened, it makes it very likely that they will do it again because they got away with it the first time. Anyway, I can't worry about the outcome. What he did was extremely serious and lying about it is, too. It has to be dealt with and I have to leave it in God's hands. I also need to stop worrying about what will happen with my friend and what her crazy ex-husband might do when he finds out. I have no control over any of it so why should I try to shoulder the responsibility? Guess I need to keep praying that I will be able to let it go and not pick it up again because my real priority at this time is my own children. Wow, thanks for being so up-front and honest, Mavis. One good thing that comes out of our severe trials is that we can help someone else...thanks.
Now I want to take a minute to encourage BWB to continue in the truth by reminding him (and all of us) about something Jesus said about it. Jesus said, "I am the truth". Huge statement. If we want more of Jesus and to be more like him we should honor truth in every part of our lives. Seek it, make a life decision to live it. Jesus also said that Satan is a liar and the Father of all lies. I know none of us want to be associated with him. Jesus said that the truth will set us free. Be blessed!

Good morning, everyone. Another rainy day here in the mid-Atlantic (ten inches since Sunday and counting). I'm starting to mildew.
MDC: No, no baby yet, but 19 more days and counting! How's the job going?
AFD: Glad all is going well. Keep us posted.
BWB: You have asked for forgiveness and I give it. AS far as being honest, better late than never.
I completely agree with FLOYD; chat doesn't usually work well here. Heck, it's the relaxed pace and deeper posts that I like about the Porch. The constant chatter can be difficult for those of us who can't log on anytime. That said, never let it be said that this pot is calling the kettle black; I can gab with teh best of 'em.
Y'know, people, one my anxieties is the internet and all the evils that it can deliver. That is the main reason why I post from work; I don't even have a computer at home anymore. I know that that is extreme, but, hey, I am clinical, after all! Eventually, I know that we will "log on" at home as the kids get older. (People sometimes look at us like we have a third eye or something when we tell them our kids are never on the computer and don't play video games, but our kids seem to be living full, happy lives even while being so "deprived.") As I have mentioned before it took quite a long time for me to actually post here; it took even longer to feel okay with sending posting pictures of my family (nothing personal, ROMEENA, of course!). It's just that nowadays you can't be too careful.
Anyway, I have to say that, even as someone well-equipt to take care of my family, the happenings of late are starting to freak me out a little. Just when things seem to be getting straight, something (or someone) else throws a curve.
I'm not very reactionary, but I have to say that I am inclined to sit back on the porch swing and do more listening than talking for awhile (stop clapping). Of course, my verbosity may get the best of me. In any event, I will keep praying.
Y'all have a great day! What's for lunch, SPOT?

BWB and DEPUTY FERGUSSON- my thought is only god can judge us all we can do is forgive any transgressions at least this time. as far as chruch and god, let me put it this way- we all are between 2 eternities. the one we were born from and the eternity we will rest in for a long time, all in between is our road on earth which connects both eternities. your the only one who can choose your last eternity, choose wisely. big maude, sorry i missed supper last night, my ribs are a pokin out, so i quess i'd better russel up some grub. thanks floyd for all you do. how are things in your neck of the woods? buckeye

Ha! I love it, MDC....and I love the verbosity. I understand the anxiety for sure. The other night was the first time I really thought about it and I realized that it can be dangerous but I also realized its a long-shot that anything bad could come from being here on this porch (I think, anyway).
My children don't go on the computer, either and seldom play video games. As soon as my son was old enough, he started playing outside. Riding bikes, climbing trees, etc. He can't stand to sit down for too long. I will be very wary about it when they are older and want to try learning some computer skills. The real danger out there is to the children who are allowed free reign on the internet.

I actually applaud you for keeping your kids off the computer, Me-They. In fact, Kai's best friend doesn't have computer either, and I can respect that. It can be a dangerous place for kids. Kai knows she is only to go on her "Favorites" sites, but I once caught her typing in a search engine. She was just putting in the name of one of the sites already in her Favorites list- Nickjr, but she had just typed "Nick", and I caught her before she clicked on any of the results, but you never know what will come up in one of those search engines. So, I gave her a stern talking to, and she knows she is only to go on her favorites. Although you have to just keep reminding them every once in a while.

BOO: I intend to keep my kids off the computer as long as I can without being overbearing about it. A lot of my friends chide me that, "today kids need to learn computer skills." Well, that's true to some extent, but it's almost a tail wagging the dog thing; they need to learn computer skills to go to school and learn about the computer. The whole thing is a huge crock, in my opinion. I didn't touch a computer until I was an adult, and my pea brain seems to be able to keep up enough with technology to hold a job. (And I started out learning DOS and saving to cassette tapes! Boy, that sure has helped me!) I just don't buy it that kids need to have twelve years of computer training to be employable on the back end. Anyway, the programs they are learning today likely won't be useful in ten years. In my opinion, the billions of dollars that schools across the nation spend on computers that will have to be replaced in three years because they have become Model-T's would be better spent on quality teachers, better text books, and other school supplies. And now we are finding out all the problems that compters and video causes in children. Computers, and the internet, are great, but they should be tools, NOT a lifestyle.
In the same vein, we hold several essay contests for school aged children here at my work. Every year the quality goes downhill. Why? Because kids are cutting and pating from teh internet instead of learning how to research and write. What you generally end up with are disjointed and poorly written essays containing factually incorrect and suspect information that can't be cited (it may suprise some to find out that much on the internet isn't true!). Sad.
Anyway, I'm down off the soapbox (again). If I keep climbing up here I'm bound to get a nosebleed...

Howdy everyone! Hope everyone is having a great day. : ) Hey to Tommy - nice to see new faces around here.
Our daughter (5 yo), used to be allowed to be on the internet with designated sites (disney, pbs, veggietales, etc), but we recently had our computer go haywire on us. We got a whole new set-up, and the place we bought it from said that a lot of the kid oriented sites try to put junk on your computers. So we don't allow her on our new computer, but we took the old one and made it "her" computer to use for CD-ROM games. Our local library has an excellent selection of learning games and things like that - and she doesn't seem to miss going on the internet at home. I do allow her to play a little on the internet at the library but only the certain sites. She also enjoys going to the park, riding her bike, and reading (with me or on her own). Our library has a reading club every summer and she participates in that with reading and activities, so she's pretty well balanced with things to occupy her.
Congrats Sterling on your offer being accepted!

Good afternoon to everyone. Taking a little break.
Me-They, you make some very good points. In fact, my husband is an administrator the company that he is employed by and he actually keeps over a hundred computers up and running with only one assistant. He also does all the inventory, buying and selling and setting up for conferences, etc. Has even gone out of state to train others and he DID NOT study the computer until he was about 30. He graduated with a degree in business but took a job with the army and got interested in computers. He took the needed college courses and then was hired by a company and learned so much on the job. Now he handles it all. He is one smart cookie but learned it all after he was grown. I really don't know how he does it all. I am almost computer illiterate. He has tried to teach me some things but I just end up getting mad at him because he goes to fast for me to comprehend what he is telling me. Oh well.
Yes Barnbannabe, I DO feel like we missed the party. I am bummed about not being able to get on at Sara's. Maybe if my husband has time tonight he can get me on there. I did some checking into my computer programs and apparently I already have java installed. Maybe the problem is this crazy dial-up service I have right now. I'm very proud to be a part of this community. People unafraid to say what they know to be true. People willing to admit when they've been wrong. People quick to forgive when they've been wronged.
Some say Mayberry no longer exist. I say it does and I believe we get to visit here every day and share just a small part of it.
BWB, don't ever do that again. I banned a member from Miss Crump's Blackboard for a month for lying because it caused so much hurt to the other visitors to that site. What you did to Boo in giving advice like that when you're not a lawyer....mmmm. That hurts.

BWB: You posted that you hated yourself for what you had done here and "for something of the things" going on in your life. That concerns me. If it's something that you have done in the past, repent, take responsibility for it, do what you can to make it right, and move on. If it's something bad that is currently going on within your control, add "stop it immediately" before that list in the last sentence. And, if it's something that someone else is doing that you can't control, pray about it. In any event, torturing yourself for your misdeeds leaves little time to do God's work.

To Barnwannabe: Before I left, I was surprised and impressed to learn that a “judge” would have the time and desire to spend time with a group of relatively average people like us. I first became suspicious when you mentioned that your cousin is an FBI officer. I was tempted to make my feelings known in a post on the porch. But because I had no proof, I just sent an email to Floyd expressing my suspicions. That’s about the time when I left on my week long absence.
After returning late yesterday, I began the chore of reading through the archives starting from my last post (Msg 39834). At some point, my suspicions became so strong that I decided to start reading again from my last post, but this time take notes. I was surprised at how much circumstantial evidence I was able to collect to support making an informed accusation against you. But before I reached the end of the archives, you confessed. Therefore, I won’t be presenting the circumstantial evidence I had accumulated.
Here is all I will say about this matter. Although you did not create any measurable harm among the members here, you did betray our trust in you. So although I can forgive you, I won’t forget this incident. In fact, I will be suspicious of any claims you may make here in the near future.
I have a positive comment as well. Although I must give credit to auh20 and Boo for putting the pressure on, it was your conscience that convinced you to confess. It takes courage to admit fault and to ask for forgiveness. So let’s move on.

Evening Porch! Didn't groom those poor dogs today (but did groom some of my client's dogs) anyway, they called & asked me to come Friday instead. Not sure why, but....I will be at Sarah's later, but gotta get some bookwork & things done first. Welcome home Poor Horatio did you have a good time? In case you missed it in all those archives, Romeena has headed to Florida (& left us all here *sniff*) & Spot & family are gone for a few days too, camping I think. Big Maude is in charge of food, but I can work on some fixin's for tomorrow night. Oh & Tom is looking for wrappers for his gum chain, I sent him some before, looks like I have to get on the ball & get some more together. Best get my bookwork done, had so much fun at Sarah's last night, I just didn't do it like I should have. See ya'll in a bit.

Evenin' Porch,
Again, I'm beat. Its such a chore with the kids in the time difference. We'll overcome!
Tom- Are you collecting any specific gum wrappers? Be careful on the roof!
Poor Horatio- Welcome back! Did you have a nice vacation?
Big Maude- Breakfast sounds great! I'll leave the tip for lunch @ the Bluebird.
Me-They- Thank you for the Jimmy Carter book titles. I'm going back to the library on Friday and I'll see if they have them. I liked your Subway story too.
AFD- I'm glad you seem to be doing well. Have you found out the gender of your little one? Have you Me-They? I found out with both of mine, and I'm glad, but we still didn't have the names until it was time to go to the hospital! With Bryson they literally said that we have to fill out the birth certificate!
Mavis- That was such a generous thing you did for those dogs. Its nice that you're gaining weight too.
Boo- How are you today? I'm glad you're getting this out in the open and dealing with your situations. Do you think the parents of the boy are lying for him?
BWB- I too won't be at Sarah's tonight. I need to download java, but I don't have time tonight.
Romeena- Have a great trip! Enjoy your family. We'll miss you.
Hey to Warren, Charlotte, Possum, and my mind is tired so everyone!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Lucy

Hey Lucy ... thanks for the welcome back. Actually, I was not on vacation. It was pure business .... real estate business. Sorry you can't join us tonight. There will be other nights.

Hip Hip Horatio!! So good to have you back, Buddy. I missed you.
Right, BWB, I will try to look back and find where it is in the archives. You might get a kick out of reading about my "man" days! They didn't last long. Once I realized what things are about here and how wonderful the folks were I had a real desire to be open and share myself with them..hope you will feel that way too as you get to know everyone better. Anyway, I won't be in the chat room tonight but will try to pop in here just in case you get lonely. I owe the kids some quality time tonight but I will certainly try to get back later.
Thanks for your words, Floyd. I feel like they were the healing words that will allow us to really move forward with wisdom and kindness.
TOM, I want to thank you for that last poem. To me it was amazing and such a comfort. I also want to tell you that I think it is wonderful how you sign your posts "Love, Tom". It makes me feel good each time I read it. Thank you.
Wonder how Millie is doing. We have not heard from her in awhile.
Better move along for now. Talk to you all later,
Boo
June 27, 2006 - Msg 41604:
Hey Lucy, didn't see you there! I am doing so much better today, thank you. I am learning to let go of what I don't have any control over and stop worrying. When the problem comes to mind I immediately feel a sickness in the pit of my stomach but I quickly get past it now. As far as the parents of the boy are concerned, I don't beleive the mom is lying for him, the dad I'm not so sure about. He is not an especially nice man and I don't really trust him. I feel sorry for what he is having to deal with, but I love the boys mother and know her character. She is having a terrible struggle with all of this. Thank you for asking,
Boo
