I like that one, too. Did y'all know that Ward was a Methodist minister in his "other" life? Once you know that, you can kinda see the ministerial traits in the way he dealt with the boys. Wise and kind and loving, but firm. Expected the best from them, but recognized that they were just little boys, and would give them room where he could. Yep, I like that show.

Well, this time I'm really off to bed. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

Guess I will be at work till about noon and then be on my way. Kids come home tomorrow. Spot, sure I will do lunch. What about: tuna or chicken salad sandwiches, potato salad, fruit salad, chess bars or brownies, lemonade or tea. We will meet at Myers Lake and have a picnic. Irishter, I enjoyed seeing your family and the beautiful picture of your country. Ireland is one place I would like to visit some day. What lovely countryside. You guys and a good day and behave. Big Maude

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40435: Morning! I just love the way this message board is getting to be like a chat room at night. You guys are so awesome!

48 degrees!! I really like you Irishter but you are starting to get on my "jealous nerve" with that kind of talk! (just kidding....sort of) heehee We are supposed to have a heat index of 103 today here on the Texas coast.

Millie, that is so neat about Ralph Waite. Next to Andy, he is my all-time favorite TV dad (Michael Landon is no 3....he would actually qualify for the s*xiest Dad award). Didn't know that Beaver's dad was a Methodist minister!

BarnWB, thanks for sharing with us about your proffession. My Dad was a judge for years when I was growing up. It kept me out of alot of trouble when I was tempted to break the law (sometimes I took my chances, though...ha). I won't ask you about kids, don't worry. I can respect that.

Thanks for your kind words, Lucy. My heart didn't seem so big last night when I wanted to knock some kid's heads together! haha You words were very encouraging, though. One more night and tonight is Parent's Night and we will be having a fair with snowcones, food, dunking booth, etc...should be fun (and hot). Lucy, prayers that your stepchilren will come for a visit.

Hey Maude, Myers lake sounds wonderful. Actually I think my husband is buying a boat from a friend at work today so I will bring it along. Bruce has been wanting to buy a boat so he and my son can go fishing/skiing, etc. They need some father/son time together and his friend is selling a nice 20ft boat that is about 12 years old but in great shape so I think he is going to buy it. I would rather have a pop-up camper but I understand why the boat would be a good thing for the men in my life. I don't like to fish, though.

Better get going...my son has an appointment with his counselor today.

Boo

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40436: Hey Irishter, what degree did your daughter in Huntsville receive? I have a sister in law that just graduated from UAH and she and my brother have teaching degrees. Just wondering if by chance they know one another?

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40437: Morning Porch! Millie, I guess I know you has Millie and FunGirl, and you know me as Deputy Warren Ferguson and Hab101!

Deputy Warren Ferguson

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40438: Good morning everyone! Hey to BIG MAUDE and BOO and anyone else lingering about on the porch today.

You know who else was an ordained minister in his "other" life? One of my personal heroes, Fred Rogers. In my humble opinion, there has never been a kinder, gentler spirit on television. I loved him as a small child, admired him as an adult, and mourned him when he passed away two years ago. My kids have never gotten into "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" the way I did (and not for lack of trying on their dad's part), but I'm glad they have the opportunity to at least sometimes enjoy perhaps the best children's television show ever.

BOO: Not to flog a dead horse, but I will say that when you boil down most of society's problems, from crime to schools to just about everything else, what you're left with is poor parenting. If parents took responsibility for actually raising their children instead of expecting them to either raise themselves or letting the schools do it for them, we'd all end up a lot better off. And raising children requires discipline. Certainly not abuse (mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual), but discipline with love. I'm certainly no social scientist but I think it has something to do with the cultural changes that started ocurring in the late 1950s and 1960s. Children are not "little adults," there ARE truths to impart, and kid's need structure as well as love. Our culture is so concerned now with what "I" want, and what's good for "me," what else should we expect from our children? If I hear one more parent say something like, "I got a divorce because I don't love my spouse anymore and deserve to be happy," "I don't discipline because I don't like to see my child unhappy," or "I need time for me," I'm gonna puke. Once we have children, their needs (as opposed to "wants") should automatically come before ours. If something is good for our kids but not necessary for us, then we need to put on a smile and suck it up. Now, I will admit that a miserable person is no good to anyone, but that isn't a kid's fault; that is between the adult and God to work out. If our Lord can suffer and die on a cross for us, we certainly can forgo a little comfort for our kids. What's wrong with kids today? In a word: parents. Thank God for all of you who seem like such wonderful, loving, and Godly role models for your children. Anyway, sorry if that sounded so harsh...I promise to stay off the soapbox for awhile.

Anyway, have a great day!!!

My daughter is in Huntsville, but got her history degreee from Pensacola Christian College.

Warmed up here today - up to almost 60 at the moment ;-)

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40442: Ah, a fellow student of history. What area of concentration, IRISHTER? It has warmed up here, too. It's about 1,200 degrees, or at least feels like it with the horrible humidity.

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40443: Thanks Boo. Spot, I thank you for the respect toward my position. A lot of people do, but some thugs that I have locked up over the years don't. Also, Boo, Thanks for the understanding about having children. Romeena:I do have to keep a low profile, but I've eyed ya'll, and ya'll seem to be okay. Some subjects I will still have to keep quiet on. I will try to give ya'll a funny story or 2 from my courtroom every now and then. Irishter: My Chapter of TAGSRWC is held in Pensacola. I'm from there. Know all about it. Barnwannabe.

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40444: Hey BWB. While I was going to college I worked part-time as a district court civil clerk. Most of the judges I got to know were, like you, nice, real nice.

M-T

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40445: Most Judges are. Some of them forget that they are just people wiyhout that robe on. Thanks for the compliment.LOL!!! Barnwannabe.

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40446: I have an interesting reminiscence for you BWB...My mom was a district court commissioner (in some areas they are called magistrates, I believe) when I was growing up (1970s). There were three or four in our pretty rural/suburban county. When police picked someone up during non-court hours, they went to whichever commissioner was closest and at home. Yep, that's right, they worked from home. I can't tell you how many times my mom was awakened in the middle of the night by a state trooper or someone knocking at the door with a prisoner or someone who wanted to press charges against someone else. It seemed that every lowlife on the planet knew my mom, which, if you knew my mom you'd know how wierd that is. Later, when I was a little older, the commissioners started working from an office at the courthouse. I tell you, though, as a teenager I couldn't get away with anything; every police officer in the county knew my mom.

TOM

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40448: Hey, Tom, we haven't gotten it yet, but it should be rolling in this afternoon. How are ya? Hey to Warren, Me-They,Boo, BWB, Irishter, and all porchsters. Making coconut pies for the restaurant, anybody want a slice?
Millie

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40449: Yes!

M-T

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40450: That's cool M-T. I'll take a slice Millie. Gotta hit the Courtroom. Be back later. Barnwannabe.

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40451: Oh, Tom, don't be sad about getting rain. Folks around here would pay to have it shipped in if we could. As one feller said, it's so dry that the trees are whistling for the dogs.

Me-They, you have really hit the nail on the head. You told it like it is, and as far as I'm concerned, you can get on the soapbox anytime you have something to say. Would you believe, a few years ago before our security force was beefed up, people used to bring their small children by and leave them off at the hospital while they went shopping or elsewhere. We'd find two or three little kids, some as young as about four, just riding around on the elevators, or standing outside the nursery trying to see the babies. Ask them where their parents are - "My mama had to go to the mall, she told me to stay here until she got back." That happened many, many times. There are negligent parents everywhere, but there are certain ethnic groups that really top the list as far as permitting unruly, rowdy and disrespectful behavior. Makes me crazy, some three year old kid running up and down the halls and yelling, at 3 a.m. at the hospital, because his mother and about 30 other members of his family are waiting for somebody to deliver. They travel in a herd, with all the inlaws and outlaws camped in the waiting room. You should see it after they leave - it looks like a circus moved out. Bottles, cans, wrappers, dirty diapers, whatever. No class, just no class.
I used to try to deal with the kids, talk to the parents, try to disperse some of the mob, but no more. I just simply call security and let them deal with it. The visitors get furious, but at least they're not mad at me. OK, that's MY soapbox!

Yep, that's right, there really is a night court judge. 2 of them actually, but they both have to be here before the other judges, and myself leave. there are 5 of us here during the day. Hopefully no scum is being picked up right now, so I won't have to do anything.LOL!!! I'm sorry about the lunch thing, I just stopped in, and didn't have time to read the other things. June 23, 2006 - Msg 40474: Hi, folks. Just got home from the rent house. Termite man did what appeared to me to be a pretty thorough job. He showed me several little mud tubes where the nasty little critters have been, and in some cases, still were. They're kaput now, though.

I wish we'd get some rain. I'd settle for a storm along with it, just to get the rain.

I stopped at the farmer's market, got me some fresh okra, three ears of corn, a big ol' homegrown 'mater, some fresh spinach and a big bag of fresh cherries. I'm gonna feast tonight! I think I'll fry that okra - haven't had good fried okra in a while, and I just love it. If y'all would like, I'll box all this up and bring it over to Spot's and share.

June 23, 2006 - Msg 40494: They are allowed so much leave, just like every other job. If you have something that you need to do, but still plan on coming to work, you are allowed so much of your leave. The court records dept., keeps track of how late you are, and if after you clock in, they subtract that from your given leave. He is really taking his vacation, or sick time away from himself. The judges that are on duty, are stuck here, until the lollygaging judge shows up. It really isn't fair to me, or the other judges that are stuck here with no cases to handle. Barnwannabe.
