Hi, all. Don't sit too close to me, I may still be contagious, but I'm feeling a bit better. Even thinking a bowl of soup might be a good idea. I'm sure the Plum would make me some, but I'm not in the mood for carrot soup, and I know that's what she'd make. I think I'll just open a can of tomato or vegetable instead. Sure is good to be feeling better, I even went out and walked around the yard for a while and put out critter feed. Fresh air was so nice. This bug was mean - high fever, chills, nausea, the whole works. Yuck.
Speaking of churches (earlier), I grew up in a little church of about 150 average attendance, and was kin to at least a third of the membership. The church I attend now runs about 7-800 on an average Sunday, but that's divided into two services - we have Sunday School and worship going on at the same time. I go to worship first, then to SS. So, essentially it's like two congregations. Sure makes good use of space. One thing I love about my church is that even though we're pretty big, it doesn't feel that way. Our SS department consists of people who have been together in SS for many years - old friends. My class is a very tight-knit group of women, a sisterhood so to speak. We look after each other, especially now as we are being widowed, one by one. Our teacher has taught us for nearly thirty years. Then there are a lot of special-interest groups - crafts classes, an international ministry where English is taught every Wednesday morning, along with childcare information, shopping tips, anything to help someone who is a "stranger in a strange land". We have a large group who enjoys traveling, usually on a bus as a group. We go on day trips often - to visit the azalea gardens in Nacogdoches, for example - and about twice a year a big trip is organized. They go on a leaf-peeping tour to New England in the fall, have gone as far as Nova Scotia. I haven't gone on the long trips, don't think I could stand that bus for that long, but a lot of the folks enjoy it. It's a mixed crowd, young and old, men and women, and I know they have fun, but I am not that fond of bus seats. Maybe I'll go someday.
Well, guess I'll go rustle up some soup. You folks have a great evening. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

Romeena- I'm sorry you're so sick. That sounds exactly like what I had last week. Can you pass it through cyberspace? If I did I sincerely apologize. Don't try to force yourself to eat until you're through with the bathroom, if ya know what I mean.

Marty- Have you made any decisions on moving?
Buckeye- As Mayor, what are your qualifications?
Are all of the bunnies ready to hop on Sunday? Bryson's getting a Narnia basket. We sent my stepkids money since they're older. Bryson's 8 and so we're not really getting him candy. I wanted to make 1 quick little rant, please. How sick is everyone hearing about Tom Cruise? I was listening to the radio and they are claiming his fiance isn't really pregnant. Then, they're talking about silent births on comcast. This morning Diane Sawyer interviewed him about his crazy father. Enough! Who really gives a flying flip! If they do then they really have too much time on their hands. Okay, sorry, over, well maybe not. The same for Brangelina. They are just people who can act. My son does that everyday! Now the ranting has completed for the evening. Okay, have a good one.

HAHA, do ya feel better now, Lucy? I haven't heard anything about Tom Cruise lately (where have I been?). So it took you 1hr and 40 minutes to get 20 miles? That scares me when I think about going to Houston on Thursday. Houston traffic is absolutely horrendous. If you get caught in it at rush hour you get stuck for hours.
Yes MDC, I was wondering about that comment of yours about the movie....sounded hilarious. Is that movie about a guy whose wife dies and then he falls in love with the women who recieved her transplanted heart?
Wow RO, it must be wonderful to be a part of a group of women like that. You are blessed. It seems like people just come and go at our church because of the Navy. Glad to hear that you are feeling better today. The last virus I had like that was about a month ago. I only threw up once or twice but I have never experience such violent chills. I shook so hard I could hardly stay in be and had the worst body aches I have ever had. It was horrible. I woke Bruce up in the night just to croak, "this is terrible!!". I needed a little sympathy. I said I would rather deliver 10 babies than go throught that again. Ebola couldn't have felt much worse.
Gotta go, I need some sleep! Nighty-Night,

Good evening, all. Lucy Matthews, in answer to your question - YES! I've had it up to here with Tom Cruise. Big spread in last Sunday's "Parade" magazine in the newspaper. All this to-do about the bizarre Mr. Cruise is about as annoying as "Chasing Farrah" was on TVLand. You pretty much summed it up -- "Who cares?"
Yep, Boo, sounds like the same bug. Hard, hard chills, shaking so hard I couldn't hit my finger with the sticker to check my blood sugar. Had to do it twice! Then trying to get the end of the strip up to the tiny blood drop was no picnic either. But, it's over now. Had some cheese and crackers and tomato soup, and feel much better. I even got outside in the fresh air and walked around in the yard for a little while this evening. I've got a new iris showing color, should be opening tomorrow, and I think it's going to be black. Well, what's classified as black anyway. It will be a deep blue/purple, so dark as to appear black. I can hardly wait for it to open.
Well, think I'll hit the hay. I've been up for several hours, getting tired. Tomorrow should be pretty much back to normal. I've got some pictures to put in the album, will try to do that tomorrow.

Lucy Matthews - My decision on moving is to not make any decisions but: for now it is best to be no more than a short drive from my Mom. I've got a few possibilities:1. move back to my home town- truck traffic and all but everything is nearby compared to living in the country as I do now: 2. Move to the terrific small college town of Bloomsburg Pa.- -park, shopping down town, Bloomsburg University-got my MS in Bio there-, hospital, bicycling, large town park, many nice small churches, Fishing Creek trout stream, Susquehanna River for smallmouth bass, musky, walleye, boating, the largest country fair in Pa., 1 hour from my home town and 30 minutes to my church(only negative is the long cold winters). 3.the shore-possibly Delaware to South Carolina- we love warm weather and the beach,4. somewhere from Mt Airy to Boone NC. -we visited there and the people were really great. No decision but the list is smaller than before.,Don't want to be in a major hurricane or tornado area and don't want a big city close by. I've been able to have some success with making my life right here a little more Mayberry-like by avoiding the bad in the area-sometimes it ain't easy. Sorry about the long answer but I am trying to think this through with all the pros and cons for each place. The porch helps me think about what I need.

Ha! Boo, you're right! I had forgotten that the little buzzsaw attacked your pictures. She snags something almost every day. Just takes it as a personal affront when the mailman has the nerve to push something through that slot. She lurks in the entryway, especially if I've put outgoing mail in the slot, because then she just KNOWS he's coming by. She just lays there on the tile, burping out little growls every few seconds, and a little "woof" makes it to the surface now and then. When he finally comes by and drops the mail in, she is just hysterical. Think "Animail Call" on "Planet's Funniest Animals". That's her. She has literally bitten big chunks out of catalogs a half inch thick. She grabs whatever she can and shakes it so hard you'd think her little skinny neck would break. Now and then she'll find one piece to be particularly offensive (usually an ad of some sort) and carries it into the den and just shreds it to confetti. So, a word to the wise - if you snail mail anything to me, warn me so I can keep her away from the mail around the time of expected arrival. And yes, I have a receptacle under the slot, but usually some of it misses and falls to the floor. That's what she nabs. She's too short to get into the big old pottery urn I put there, though she does try. Weird little critter. She has such a gentle, sweet little heart, but she does deeply resent the mailman and his leavings.
Well, gotta run. Groceries to put away, caladium bulbs to plant, and I just MUST bathe the Plum. Will be having family here on Sunday, and she has to be at her beautiful best. She looks like a scruffy little ragamuffin right now, but she'll be "gawjus" when I finish with her. Mavis, I sure wish you were nearby. She'd be even "gawjusser", I'm sure.
Have a great evening, everyone, and if I don't see you before Sunday, have a blessed Easter. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

happy easter mayberry deputy and everyone, a little early but a joyous occasion to come as children and with a thankful heart for the season. tom, thanks for another great poem, we sure look forward to them. a little easter trivia; prior to the 16th century the pagens worshipped asteria the goddess of fertility. it was said she had a pet rabbit named aster, thus a sign of spring renewal;;; during the 16th century the germans changed it to easter and kept the bunny as an easter bunny- they started to boil eggs and using plant dyes to color them, they built nests of twigs and hid the eggs for the kids to find;;; when the germans migrated tou.s, they brought easter and christmas traditions with them, which the leading merchants saw a profit promoting thus it spread fast. the germans were also credited with designing an easter bunny mold they filled with chocolate. goober, charlotte tucker, ellen brown and folks in ind., iowa, il, ohio mo, we're in for a possible early weather storms. take care. what's forsupper? buckeye

Wow! Some of you "snuck" up on me. Tom, a beautiful poem, as always. Your pictures are in the album, and the ones you sent me are on their way back to you.
Marty, judging from what you wrote, I'd say your heart is in Bloomsburg. Son, you sound like you're on the Chamber of Commerce for that town.
Big Maude, you are so right about the support this porch offers. Honey, you have no idea. I was a new widow when I found it, and a sadder, more depressed person you've never seen. I'm not saying the porch was wholly responsible for my recovery, but it definitely played a part. True recovery lay in my own heart, in renewing my relationship with God and giving up the anger, but while I was trying to figure that out, the porch was a place to go and get lost in another, better world for a while. Thanks, folks.
Mayberry Deputy, don't be such a stranger.
Spot, I hear you. As a nurse, I've worked many an Easter Sunday, Christmas Day, whatever. There are just some things that go on, regardless of what day it is. Your job is extremely important, keeping the lights on and the power flowing to homes, churches and hospitals in your area. Someone once openly criticized me for working on Sunday, instead of being in church "like a Christian should" and my husband overheard it. He asked the person if they were saying that only non-Christians should be nurses, and would they be comfortable being a patient if that were the case? End of discussion, of course.
OK, this time I'm really going, unless someone else has dropped in while I was typing. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

RO, I love that answer your husband came up with. I sure worked my share of Sundays. As a nurse working in a hospital there in no way around it unless you work outpatient surgery and that job is hard to get.
Better go, Dad just popped his head in and asked me to go microwave some popcorn for him and mom. The poor thing can't even figure out how to pop corn in the microwave anymore (or else he wants me to believe that. hmmmmm...).

Evenin' Y'all,
I'm really pooped tonight. We're trying to get our apartment ready for the painters to come on Monday. We've been here for 5 years and so we're getting new carpet, blinds, and painting. Boy are we ready with 3 kids and their friends here. I just want to say how thankful I am for finding this group. Unfortunately, I came after Mr. Knott's passed, but that's okay. Y'all are truly a blessing. I'm going to hit the hay, goodnight!
Blessings to you and yours,

PS Romeena, I too like what your husband said even though I'm not a nurse. I worked in retail when I friend said it to me. I recall in the bible that you are to dedicate a day to God, not a specific day of the week, right?

That black iris is opening, should be able to get good pictures today or tomorrow. I'll put them in the album, because it's truly spectacular.
Oh, oh, oh!! What a lovely sight. You remember a few months ago, I told you all about a pretty pigeon with a broken leg, and how over the weeks it gradually began using the leg again. Has a serious limp, but does use the leg. Well, I hadn't seen him for a while, and now this morning, here he is!! Still limping, but still going. Makes me feel good. Maybe the supplemental feed I always put out helped him a little. I hope so. He's a pretty thing, a sandy buff color with rusty markings.

Here I am SPOT, ready to face the day. Already had my toast and coffee, dressed and everything. I slept in until 8am today. I love Saturday! Of course I did a stupid thing and stayed up until 1:30am. I am just like a kid that way. If I know I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn I can't stand the temptation of staying up late and doing my own thing while everyone sleeps. I never do that on Saturday night, though because of sunday school the next day. Yesterday I went out alone for a couple of hours to try to find a new dress for Easter but didn't have any luck. I like something that is a little sophisticated and all I could find was either dresses that looked like they were made for older women or that hippy look that everyone is into these days. Oh well, I have a nice black skirt I can wear but I was hoping for something more spring-like. When you have to shop in the plus sizes its hard to find just the right thing sometimes! When I was young and thin, I really used to dress well but now I look like one of those poor shlumps on that "What Not To Wear Show". Ha. I try to look nice on Sunday, though. The problem is that I love flip-flops and Bruce hates them. He asked me to please not wear them to church but lots of people do. He always goes to church in a suit and tie looking like an executive and many time I am wearing jeans. My church is real casual. Bruce and the preacher are the only 2 who ever wear ties.
Speaking of church, I am going to show the rest of Jesus of Nazareth in Sunday school and if there is any time left over we will make faith bracelets (they are bracelets made with different colored beads that symbolize different spiritual truths and help kids to share their faith...like the black bead symbolizes our sin, the red symbolizes the blood of Christ...etc.). I am also going to make some cupcakes to take for the kids. You know the kind that you put green coconut on top with a candy egg. Real cute! I heard from my in-laws last night and they are coming on Easter for lunch. I guess we will have some bar-b-que with beans and potato salad (the official meal of Texas. ha!). That means I have to go to the grocery store today. Bummer!
Ro, so glad to hear about the pigeon! Wish I could come and help you with the house. We could have it sparkling in no time.
Well, lots to do so I better get it in gear. Have a good Saturday, everyone!

Its a glorious day here in Atlanta! Its gonna be a bit warm this afternoon, but I'll take it! We've already been out at Bryson's soccer game-they won! This is only their 2nd game they've won out of 6 so we're really happy. Bryson got in there and blocked a ton of shots and he even ran with the ball down the field. He never does that because he feels he can't score a goal, but he actually tried. I guess I don't have to bribe him, ha.
Boo- Lane Bryant, The Avenues, and sometimes Goody's has nice plus size. I got my dress at Stein Mart, but I don't have shoes yet. I'm getting ready to head to kohl's to get some since they're having a good sale today. I'm such a lover of flip-flops that I bought a pair with rhinestone stuff on them for dressy occasions!
Buckeye- That is so interesting about carrots. I had no idea. That's one of the only veggies Bryson will eat with ranch dressing of course.
Sterling- Did you play a character, or how did you find your name? I always tell my children to try and look your best for the Lord's house, but you're right God doesn't really care.
Romeena- How does Plum do with her baths?
Big Maude- Enjoy relaxing with your kids.

Lucy M., I don't know what you mean by did I play a character. I'll tell you, I WISH I played a character on TAGS. That would have been something I could enjoy thinking about for the rest of my life.:)
I know my name doesn't seem very Mayberry-ish, but it is the name I use for all of my online message board dealings. I guess you could say it is my alter-ego.
I actually picked it up from a computer software company called Spectrum Holobyte(you may have seen the name on boxes of computer software in stores), and I just tweaked it a little to make it sound more human.
But, it is not totally non-Mayberryish. As it happens, the actor Sterling Holloway(who did the voice of Winnie the Pooh) was on an episode of TAGS, playing that traveling salesman Bert Miller. So I can always say I took my name from his real name(and tweaked it also, to make it less human, it would appear;)). I can say that. It isn't true, but I can say it. ;)
Btw, congrats on Bryson's win!

Big Maude, if you'd be willing to trust me with some prints, I have a scanner, and I promise I'd send your prints right back. I've done that for several of the porchsters.
Lucy Matthews, The Plum doesn't care much for her bath, but she endures it. After we're done, I wrap her in a big beach towel and cuddle her for a while. You can see a picture of her in the album, where I put her in a sink while I cleaned up the bath mess. Then we get in my big chair and sometimes we both fall asleep. Later I take her out of the towel and finish drying her with a blower, combing as I go to smooth out the wave in her hair. Maltese aren't supposed to be wavy, but she is, a little.
What she really despises is the combing. I always comb her out thoroughly before her bath - no sense washing any shed hair, and if there are some little mats, they just tighten up when they're wet. So I comb her very carefully before her bath, and she just hates it. Wiggles and pulls her feet away and generally fusses with me about it, but I win. I think that's why she tolerates her bath, because she hates it just a little less than the combing.
The combing is done, and I got so much hair out of her that I told her if she didn't behave I was going to kick her out and knit a new puppy out of that hair. I almost could.
Well, gotta tackle the house. The Plum's bath will come later today, after she recovers from the comb-out. My fault, I should have done it a week ago. You just can't let a Maltese go more than a few days.

When we were kids, my mom always made us be quiet between 12 and 3, then we would go to a service at 3pm. Always very moving. I still try to do the same as an adult, to give that one specal day fully to the Lord!
Sterling, my mom also used to tell us kids that we would certainly dress up if we were invited to a fancy banquet
so we should give that respect to the Lord. I guess to me it's a reverence thing. A wise lady, my mum, from as along as i can remember, she told us of Jesus love.

Hey all! Just got back from My Home Town to visit my Mom and take a desk for my neice who is staying with her. If you recall, this is the little town formerly like Mayberry but now sits between two truck stops. Well, a couple of nights ago one of them trucks lost control and tore up a bunch of cars. Today I parked at the bait and tackle shop on Main Street, to get my fishing license, but it was closed. As I was walking back to my van I spotted Nellie waiting for the bus so I went over to say hello and asked if she knew why Ray's Bait was closed. When I was still in school in the 60's I had a job at a clothing factory in town that she also worked in. She retired quite a few years ago. She told me Ray's closed for some medical problem. Then she asked if I heard about the big truck crash. I asked exactly where was the crash and Nellie replied right where the chicken store used to be. Good thing I was in My Home Town cause that chicken store(poultry market) has been gone for over 30 years. Wow! directions in small towns. I have some more true small town stories but I'll save them for another day.

Yes I agree, Sterling. In fact, I think that if things were less formal more people would come to church. Face it, some folks may be intimidated if they can't affors fancy clothes, also, it is a real challenge sometimes just getting everybody dressed and to Sunday school (with young children, especially) on time and it would be easier if we all dressed, "every day-like". The bible doesn't address the issue directly, I don't think. There is a verse that says something like, "Man looks at the outward appearance and God looks at the heart.". Too bad we don't make more effort to cleanse the "inside of the cup" as Jesus said, when we come together.
Now SPOT, what's this about not being a foot man? Some of us have very cute feet in flip-flops, thank you very much.
Lucy, we don't have The Avenues or Goody's here. Lane Bryants tends to be very high priced unless you catch a good sale. Can you believe I went to Steinmart and couldn't find any dresses? They only had a few skirts and tops and slacks. Weird.
We do have Kohl's. I guess I should have tried there.
RO, whenever I bathe my weinie dog, Mindy, I wrap her up tight in a towel like a little burrito and give her to my mom to hold in the recliner. She always looks so funny with her little head sticking up (Mindy, I mean, not my mom). hehe
Where's Daphne, Asa, Homemaker, Mavis and all our other friends?
MDC, yesterday my church observed good Friday by putting up three crossed out front near the road and actually had live men on them. Our church is kind of out in a feild and there is nothing close to it on either side except a little hill on one side. As you drove down the road in front of the church you didn't see the crosses until you passed the hill and were right there in front of them. It was really a shock and looked so realistic as those three men, dressed in very authentic-looking robes hung there with their robes blowing in the wind. It felt very strange, kind of like the feeling you get in a lonesome cemetery. Several men of the church volunteered to spend time on the cross (2 hours each) from 9am to 3pm. Bruce was on the cross for two hours and he said it became extremely uncomfortable after about 30 minutes but everyone stuck it out. It must have been quite a time of contemplation to be hanging there in silence with people passing by and looking at you.
Well, there are cupcakes to make! I got my Suburban out of the shop today and will have to fill it up with gas tomorrow so I may need a little moral support. harhar

Big Maude, email me at Romeena@airmail.net, I'll snag your email address and send you my snail mail address. I'd prefer not to post it here. Who knows who's lurking in the shadows under the porch? Wish a spider'd bite 'em!
Wow, Boo, that must have been really impressive, the three crosses. Hooray for Bruce for taking part in it, it couldn't have been easy.
Regarding a dress code for church, I have fairly liberal feelings about that. I do think the dress code should reflect the standards in the community, to some extent. Certainly I don't believe anyone should dress immodestly (ever, not just in church) and clothing should be clean and in good repair. No sloppy attire, that would be disrespectful. At our church, we have rather a mixed congregation, everything from the young and broke to the old and wealthy, and all in between. Our pastor is always in a suit and tie, but our music minister wears slacks and an open-neck shirt. The choir wears robes. (We decided against the pool table.) In the congregation, you'll see young women in jeans and sweaters, and older women in classic suits and furs. (I hate furs, don't own any.) I wear slacks and sweaters or overblouses most of the time, just more my style. I'm not all that "girly" in my attire, been a bit of a tomboy all my life. Our men come in jeans and sport shirts, and in suits and ties. All get along fine, and I think the mix makes it possible for anyone to feel that they could fit in and not feel out of place. Everyone dresses up a bit more on the special days, Christmas and Easter, but still it's a pretty eclectic mix. I've been happy there for 33 years.
Well, back to my cleaning. Anybody want to volunteer to help? Can't count on the Plum, she's not much help. Her biggest contribution is barking at the vacuum.

My girlfriend got some negative news regarding her recent surgery. Although the growth they removed from her uterus was benign, the surgeon also removed her appendix because it looked odd. Lab tests confirmed some a small cancer growth in her appendix. Her oncologist assured her that this form of malignancy is very slow growing and may have been present for many years. Now she will require yearly scans. This news has got me feeling somewhat poorly. My dad died from lymph node cancer and that is not an experience I want for her. As for praying, I have experienced so many unanswered prayers in my life that .... oh well. Que Sera Sera ... whatever will be, will be.
