March 08, 2006 - Msg 35478: Ha, I went back and read that post about Rudy and I sure see what you mean! I couldn't figure out what you were talking about earlier. I kept looking at the my post where I asked Romeena if she used her tire swing.

Sterling, don't lose heart about the house. Right after we put ours on the market, the local Navy Base announced it was closing. I had to keep the panic down and keep reminding myself that God was in control. As it turned out a Naval officer from New York bought the house to use a rent house when he retires. Just goes to show you God can work things out. I really didn't like to see it become a rent house because we put alot of work into making it a really nice, clean house but I guess it doesn't matter anymore. Just keep praying and don't let fear get ahold of you. I read this quote the other day, "Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered, and there was noone there."

I just checked out your photo album...Nice...real nice! That couldn't have been too easy to get a picture of that hummingbird! And...are you sure about those roses in December!?? That would be unheard of around here!

Some real fine looking folks on this here site! That model railroad set is a pretty all-consuming hobby, looks to me like!

Have a wonderful Mayberry Evening y'all!

Hey, was a Post Office ever mentioned on TAGS?
Just thought of that.
Ro, that yard is a real cozy place! I bet the grandkids love it!
Well, Have a good one, and let's meet at spots!
MDC

March 08, 2006 - Msg 35484: Thanks, Mary Wiggins. I'm glad you like the site. Actually, the hummingbird shot was very easy. The feeder hangs just outside my window, I keep a digital camera on a tripod on my desk, ready to turn on and shoot whenever something is happening out in the yard. The hummer came in, I focused and just started shooting. That was the best out of about a dozen shots. As for the roses - yep, roses in December. Not terribly unusual in this part of the world, though they were exceptionally late, and pretty, this year. I had roses right through Christmas. Down in south Texas, where Boo lives and where I'm originally from, we frequently picked fresh tomatoes from the garden for the table at Thanksgiving, and occasionally at Christmas. Ya gotta love it!

Well, I'm off to Morelli's with a friend. Pounded steak! Yum! Sugarplum, who is insulted because she can't go, says 10-4! --Romeena

March 08, 2006 - Msg 35485: Yep, MDC, the post office figured strongly in the episode where Barney gets involved with the woman who tried to sue him for breach of promise. Remember, he led her across the street to the post office, siren blaring, lights flashing, made a big U-turn and stopped in front of the post office. Then he took her inside and showed her how to find the stamp window and all - none of which impressed Thelma Lou as being necessary. --Romeena

March 08, 2006 - Msg 35488: Hello porch. Mercy sakes a lot of chatter. Good to see it.

Possum, (or Postum as MDC called you) Laci is just a real sweetheart. She looks a lot like one of my nieces who lives in California. In fact she she was one of 5. Yep, my brother in-law and his wife had quintuplets about 4 years ago. All of them are doing fine. I can't remember if I ever mentioned that here before or not. Anyway, Laci is a cutie. She got it from her Grandma it looks like. (you ever see a possum blush?)

Mary Wiggins, so good to see you back with a new puter. Hope to see more of you now.

MDC, Along with Romeena's mention of the post office, Barney mentions in an episode about not buying stamps over there thru no machine. And there were several times with dialouge between Barney, Andy and the mailman. The best was Talbot and Barney arguing about who had the best bulliten boards and trying to broker a deal about wanted posters. Funny stuff. And another when Talbot refused to hand Andy the mail cause he wasn't an authorized receptacle. Barney hollered how you give some folks a uniform and it go's right to there head. And then the postal feller who recognized Mr. Wheeler had soft hands for a handyman after shaking it.

Well, a shout howdy to everyone else. Need to go read the archives.
Mavis, you gonna tell us how the audition went?

Be careful in yer travels Rev. Don't go breaking yer neck.

We have 4 inches of fresh snow here this morning...ugh! Hopefully it should melt off fast...I hope. I think I need to move to Texas. Picking tomatoes and stuff in November sounds mighty nice. I just don't know if I could handle the humidity though. I'm used to the dry heat. BTW Romeena, your yard is a picture no artist could paint. Very nice.

Well off to work I go. To bad I wasn't born rich instead of so darn good looking. I hear myself muttering under my breath when I tread off to work "what a mess I've made of my life!" Just kidding, working is a blessing. Boy am I ever blessed. :)

We had a huge thunderstorm last night, light show and all, lots of hard rain. Asa, I can't imagine you trudging through four inches of snow! Now I love snow, it's beautiful and all that, but I'm ready for spring! Another iris is blooming, pansies are just ridiculous and hyacinths are about finished. So pretty. Thank you, Lord.

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35507: Good morning, everyone! And another lovely one that it is.

Did anyone watch that show "Black.White." on F/X last night? It was pretty interesting, though there were some things about its production that irritated me.

BOO: It's funny that you mention Mr. Rogers. I've been thinking about him lately with Don Knotts' passing. Bothe were one of kind who I never met but added so much to my own life. Don Knotts added much laughter; Fred Rogers was a childhood friend. When Mr. Rogers passed on a little over a year ago, I hadn't thought much about him in years but I found myself mourning for weeks. I had never thought about how much his presence in my childhood had meant. He taught me much, and effected me profoundly. He was a good man. Thank goodness my own children can still experience his sweet life lessons and gentle humor through reruns. Still, whenever I come across the show, it makes me sad. It may sound really corny, but I count him among my heros.

Enough melancholy in the morning! Let's plan lunch...

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35515: BUCKEYE: Mr. Rogers mailman was Mr. McFeely (though I'm not sure about the spelling).

MDC: Don't mention ironing! Or laundry generally! That's my job at home. We've been involved in a complicated home improvement project for about two years now which necessitated us having to remove the washing machine. I've been lugging laundry to my mom's every week since. Thank goodness, the project is wrapping up in the next month or so. Once it's done, we will also be installing a dryer, our first! I've lived in the house for 15 years, and we've been married for almost 9 and we haven't had a dryer yet. So hanging/getting clothes on/off the clothesline isn't really much of a reminiscence for me! When we had our daughter, we used cloth diapers but used a service. By the time we had our son, no company would service our area (too far in the boondocks, I guess). My wife wanted to buy diapers and do them ourselves, but we ended up using disposables. I had to draw the line somewhere! Wow. This conversation is sure going in the sewer.

Not sheets, thank goodness, but pillowcases had to be ironed. As I got older and taller, I took on more of the ironing, until I was doing most of the ironing for my family, especially after my mom went to work when I was eleven. The end result is, to this day - if a garment has to be ironed it cannot live in my closet. It must find another home. I do own an iron, but not sure where it is at the moment.

Well, I'm off to the garden center. I just called and found out he has a whole shipment of petunias in. Can't resist them, gotta have them! I have some bare dirt in my yard that is just crying for pretty little clumps of petunias.

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35539: Whew! Just planted one flat of pansies, and have two flats of petunias out there, along with some odds and ends of stuff. Guess I'll do more planting tomorrow. Where is Mr. Wheeler when you need him?

Beautiful, beautiful day here. In fact, we've had so much sunshine that I've got a big old algae bloom in my fishpond! The water is green, can't even see the fish, let alone see the bottom. Guess I'd better dig out my big bottle of AlgaeFix and take care of that little problem. If it ain't one thing, it's another!

Who's cooking tonight? I'm hungry! Anybody know what the special is at the diner? I hope it's not those Vienna sausages. I don't care much for them.

I think I'll give the Plum a bath tonight. She's a stinky puppy, and I just can't deal with that. I prefer my furkids on the sweet-smelling side. She'll object, but I'll win.

Have a great evening, everyone. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

ASA, you are such a joy to me, the way you make me laugh!

Thanks for bringing up the subject of VICKS, MDC, its been too long since we talked about it.

Diapers, handkerchiefs...boy the conversation has been real stimulating around here...hehe. Think I'll go downtown and watch them change the letters at the movie house. Maybe I'll stop by the fillin' station and sip an Orange Crush. Anybody wanna come?

Boo,I'll go along with you .We can make sure they spell everything right on the marquee -I before E and all that! Hey,we need to get our group up again and go to the picture show over in Mt. Pilot like we used to-remember those days? Maybe we can FINALLY see To Kill A Mockingbird, as long as Asa behaves himself so we don't get kicked out! Asa, seems like I remember you mentioning those quints.Didn't you say their delivery was featured on one of those "baby birthing" programs on tv? Talk about DIAPERS-wow!
Well, let me scoot off this porch and catch up with Boo.I'll bring an Orange Crush back for whoever wants one!

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35543: For all the women out there I just finished a too cute book called The Town that came a courtin' by Ronda Rich. I am a staunch supporter of all things southern (except for the klan, kudzu, and humidity) and she wrote the cutest novel about a Southern writer who goes on a book tour and ends up in Mississippi and falls in love with the Mayor that the whole town is trying to fix up. It good and wholesome like TAGS. I'm reading her other 2 books about what southern women know now.I like books that are wholesome and usually Crhitian, but not necessarily.

I'm not gonna say something to everyone, but Me-They, I don't even have my mama's maid! Believe you me, I live alot differently than I did growing up. Possum, can I get a Mt. Dew? Oh, and homemaker, put your head over boiling water with a towel over it. The steam will help.

Okay, well, I've had my bath and ready to read and go to bed. Y'all take care!
Blessings to you and yours,
~Farrah/Lucy Matthews

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35544: Farrah, I think Lucy Matthews is a great name, and while I do have a very vague memory of someone by that name, it must be years ago and I'd think it would be fair game by now. Up to you, of course, but Lucy was cute, and so is the name. By the way, that book sounds like fun, I'll have to see if I can find a copy.

Boo, I'd like a grape Nehi, if Wally has one. They're kinda hard to find nowadays. If he doesn't have one, then a nectarine crush will do. As for the pansies, I think I bought the last ones in town. Getting too late for them, everybody has petunias out for sale now. I did manage to find a beautiful flat of those delightful orange/gold pansies, though. With a few deep purple ones planted with them, they're a knockout. I planted them in front of a gold/brown sandstone boulder, and they sure do stand out.

I'm ready to go to Mt. Pilot to see a movie, anytime the rest of you want to go. We can take my car, but it only carries five comfortably. Anybody got a van? Or a pickup? If the drive-in theater shows TKAM, we could go in a pickup. I've got a bunch of lawn chairs, and we could take a cooler of cold drinks. Just back that truck in, and we could see just fine! If anybody sees Gizzmo or Tom, see if they want to come along.

Well, off to bed. Sugarplum says 10-4. --Romeena

March 09, 2006 - Msg 35545: Hey Farrah, good choice for a name I will have to get used to it but it's perfect. i made it in from the rain and I see that everyone is pretty much on the porch tonight. I cant seem to understand how to beat this unseasonable weather though. Between my flowers blooming early and my allergies im almost losing it. I even had a mosquito try to bite me. I tell you global warming. Anywhoo, it's great to be back where all is well. Let me know when you are going to Mt. Pilot to see the movie Sugarplum. You can get Grape Nehi's over at the Farmer's Market in Forest Park and at the J.D. Cofers in little 5 points boo. I also like the Big Red drinks. I agree with MDC vicks works for me when I cant breathe. But wrap me in a blanket and make me a hot toddy and let me sweat. Asa you are so funny, keep me laughing. To everyone else including homemaker, Charlotte, Romeena I say hello and just a note to all of you my son Ben does the cutest little dance to TAGS theme when it comes on. He loves the show and I tried to tell him not to call me Pa but it sort of grows on you. Hope everyone else is doing well and my girl Paris made it through American Idol so I had a good night. Take care and until then Shazam.

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35548: Sounds like we have elected MDC as the offical porch ironer. Does that mean we will all end up with hot knee's?

I like the handle Lucy Matthews. You might have Ed Sawyer calling on you but he's a good feller.

Boo, Shazaam, thanks for the nice compliments about saying how I make you laugh. It got me to studying about why I like to make people laugh. I really don't know if I can answer that. But it makes me happy to make folks giggle. Guess thats kinda odd when you really think about it, huh? Any insight on that?

Y'all are killing me with all this flower planting talk and spring talk. I really get antsy when we get into March and still have snow on the ground. That 5 acres next to Boo sounds pretty good about now.

Farrah/Lucy, I don't look to much like my chosen name here. At least not for a few more years. I chose Asa cause my spelling can be horrible and I figure I could spell Asa without much problem. That plus if I ever get dyslexia I'm still good.

I can only imagine what the summer has in store for us. Asa,how about saving that snow and we'll get Fred Goss to haul it over here to SC come July!

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35551: Hey asA!

I know what you mean about liking to make people laugh! I think that's a good avocation...

I work with a woman who annoys me to no end. I am sure everyone here can identify with that. Well, at work the other day, she got a phone call, someone else asked her who called. She replied, "it was my husband, he just wanted to say he loves me!" I couldn't help it... I replied with, "Oh, it's nothing important then!"

Shame on me, but I thought it was funny and so did every one else!

Have a great Mayberry day all!

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35553: Oh asA, thanks for the laugh this morning. You were talking about how you feel when everyone is talking about spring flowers and you still have snow on the ground. I'll bet that's how I feel when its still 90 degrees here in November and you guys are talking about cool weather. When I went outside this morning, yuck, it was warm and very humid. I just hate it that way. Everything feels sticky. Yesterday was perfect with a west wind but today the wind has shifted from the South and it is humid. I might as well just get used to it after 43 years.

Just found out we are getting a surprise visit from my eldest brother, Jerry, from California. He should be in tomorrow so there is lots to do today...sheet changin' and all. I don't know where we are going to put him. I think the kids and I might go somewhere else and sleep.

We had a good time last night, didn't we Possum? We even managed to find some Grape Nehi for Romeena. We broke into our piggy banks and had the special down at the diner (pounded steak). Guess who showed up?? Daphne and Skippy, so we went and caught the floor show at the Gigolo Club (it was Daphne's suggestion). Well, you won't believe who we saw there (in the show, no less), ASA!

Well, better hit the chores!

And does anyone know the words to the little Brown church, and Flow gently sweet Afton. it's amazing how TAGS used the same actors to play different roles. The young lady who played Josephine Pike and sang that song also played the albatross on the show with Thelma Lou and Helen and Barney, Gomer, and Andy. Sorry to bring up some bad memories there Gome. Also does anyone have old man kelsey for a name I have a friend who would like to join the porch. Got back from Miami...played the blue monster while I was there. That was on Tuesday, the first day it was open to public play since the Doral tourney. Tiger was there while I was there...but I didn't get to give him any golf lessons. :-)

Had to do several presentations while there...so the slides that I had all had quotes about the subject matter. There were 3 quotes in all, leading into the topics. On the first I listed the quote, then in parenthesis asked "Did Calvin Collidge say that?". On the second I listed "I don't think Calvin Coolidge said that" and on the last, "Calvin Coolidge didn't say everything, Floyd". :-) It was fun. A few folks got it...

Hope ya'll are having a good afternoon...I'll check back again..

Hey to Goober!

Sounds like a tough day, MDC. Maybe you should take your 5 minute shower and hit the sack. At the risk of sounding really lazy, I was wondering if I could just call you DC? Sometimes its a pain to type three letters in caps. I am probably just exhausted from all the work today. I am starting to feel really old. I did laundry (no ironing), lots of dishes, scrubbed the shower, tub and toilet, scrubbed the kitchen, took out the trash twice, dusted the furniture, cleaned the leather couches, changed my sheets and washed my comforter, cleaned my bedroom, took care of my four year old and elderly mom, made dinner for everyone and cleaned up after, bathed Erin while visiting with my brother from out of town, fed three dogs, etc...I'm pooped but I can still go down to the drug store and get a bottle of pop with you, MAVIS. That would be nice, then maybe we could take a stroll down mainstreet and count parked cars. What do ya say? I figure we should live it up a little, this bein' Friday night and all.

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35568: Oh, I forgot to tell you guys that I found an old Drive-In movie in operation in San Antonio. That is only 2 hours from here. I think we are going to take Sean and Erin during spring break and let them see a movie at the drive-in. We will stay at a motel overnight and go to the Alamo Cafe (good Mexican food). Wish you could all join us. Wouldn't that be fun?

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35571: Wow, Boo! A drive-in still operating in good old SA? Where is it? Probably not the old Bandera Road Drive-in, I think it's a subdivision now. Wish I had a nickel for all the highly forgettable movies I saw on that old screen. It does seem to me I remember that there was still a drive-in operating - south of town, I think, something about a Star in the name, maybe? Who knows? My forgettery works very well these days, but my remembery isn't too good. Ahhh, the Alamo Cafe! Good food indeed. Wish I could join you. We used to enjoy Karam's, the old one on the west side of town. Run by a Lebanese family, but really good Mexican food. They opened a fancy new one out off of Hwy 10, in the northwest sector, but the food wasn't as good. I wonder if the diner ever served Mexican food? Probably not, considering the very tentative way Andy pronounced "tortilla" when he was considering taking that job that might have sent him to South America. It appears that Mexican food wasn't really well known in Mayberry.

Well, I guess I'll turn in early and watch some DVDs. Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35573: Heehee, Hola Hazel, como esta? Come on with us and we will go to the diner afterward. What'll we have for a snack? Maybe pie and coffee. Pie is my favorite and with a cup of diner coffee, yum! Hey, if we drink coffee we will be awake enough to catch Asa's act again at the Gigolo club. You really have to see it to believe it.

Yep, wish you could join us at the Alamo, Ro. The drive-in is called the Mission Drive In and has 4 or five screens. I think it was re-opened in 2002. Might be a dump, but might not. Anyway, the old drive I used to go to when I was a kids was a dump so I'm used to it. The things I saw in the restroom there I'll take to my grave!

Hazel, Mavis and I will be by to get you in 20 minutes....don't change your underwear (that's not spontaneous).

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35574: Uh...the above post was me, Boo.

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35575: Oh, and I never was kids, I was just a kid.

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35576: I've been to the Mission Drive-in, Boo, but it was closed long ago. I had no idea it had been re-opened. What fun! Now, to make the adventure complete, you have to take a bunch of tuna sandwiches, with plain boiled rice in the tuna to stretch one can to feed two adults and two kids. They have to be on white bread, with lettuce (also makes them go further.) Then you have to take some sodas, preferably Pepsi (my husband's favorite), and the kids have to be in their jammies, and bring along their pillows and blankets. They'll conk out about ten minutes into the movie.

What good times we had back then. An evening's entertainment and a meal for the whole family for about $4, if you went on dollar-a-carload night. Those were the days!

Sugarplum says 10-4! --Romeena

March 10, 2006 - Msg 35577: Wow, if typing three letters in caps is too much for you, you'd better take a break, Boo! :)

I remember the drive-in we had around here, and I remember getting bit up there too. No, it wasn't from my date, but from all the mosquitos.(I wasn't on a date anyway, I was with two of my brothers and my sister). Yep, I remember it well. We were watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and there had been a slight rain beforehand so there was some fog which gave it some nice atmosphere for that movie, but it also brought out those blood-suckers. I think I would have rather have been on those dangerous adventures that Indiana was going through than deal with those pests(the mosquitos not my siblings);).
There was a radio station you were supposed to be able to turn to to listen to the movie, but it didn't work, for us anyway. We had to leave halfway through the movie. It was either that or be pin cushions for the rest of the night.

Geeze. Just talking about that I am getting itchy. :)

March 11, 2006 - Msg 35578: Mornin' Y'all! There's still one drive in operating here in SC that I know of. It's called Mo's or Big Mo's and it's located in Monetta,SC. I do know that Monetta is a real town in SC-don't think Meehawkin was though(remember Andy heard that some bad guys escaped from Meehawkin,SC and he told Uncle Ollie they were headed to Mayberry?)
