February 25, 2006 - Msg 34543: Don Knotts, the rail-thin comic actor who was perhaps best known to millions of television viewers as the bungling Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife in "The Andy Griffith Show" and the squirrelly landlord in "Three's Company," died of lung cancer Feb. 24 at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 81.

Mr. Knotts, who often played high-strung characters, won five Emmys for Best Supporting Actor in the 1960s as the swaggering but hapless Fife. Mr. Knotts developed the idea of the deputy sheriff when he heard that Andy Griffith, with whom he had worked in the play "No Time for Sergeants," was putting together a TV pilot set in the fictional North Carolina town of Mayberry.

TV's Barney Fife Dies
Don Knotts, who kept generations of TV audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show" and would-be swinger landlord Ralph Furley on "Three's Company," died at 81.

The series was a huge success when it aired, from 1960 to 1968, consistently ranking in the top 10 of the Nielsen ratings.

Fife, who grew into one of the most beloved comic characters in American popular culture, generated sympathy and laughs in scenes in which he fumbled to load his service revolver with the single bullet Griffith allotted him.

"Don meant everything," Griffith said in a telephone interview. "Don made the show. I've lost a lifetime friend."

The two actors remained close friends over the years and reprised their roles in the 1986 television movie "Return to Mayberry."

Mr. Knotts's wife, actress Francey Yarborough, said in a statement that Griffith visited Mr. Knotts at the hospital shortly before his death to say goodbye.

"Don was an actor who played comedy as opposed to a comedian who does stand-up," said Mr. Knotts's longtime manager, Sherwin Bash, in a telephone interview. "He was one of a kind."

Mr. Knotts, who lived in West Los Angeles, left television in 1965 to devote more time to family-oriented film comedies that featured his zany, bugged-eyed expressions, high-pitched voice and perfect slapstick timing.

His movie credits include "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" (1964), "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" (1966), "The Reluctant Astronaut" (1967), "The Shakiest Gun in the West" (1968) and "The Love God?" (1969).

In the 1970s, Mr. Knotts teamed with fellow comic actor Tim Conway in the Disney movies "The Apple Dumpling Gang" and "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again."

"It's because of Don that I'm in this business," Conway said in an interview last year with the Kansas City Star. "When I used to watch the old 'Steve Allen Show,' with Don Knotts and Louie Nye and Tom Poston -- the 'Man on the Street' stuff -- I just thought Don was the funniest guy I'd ever seen. And I used to wait for that show at night."

Mr. Knotts returned to television in the late 1970s, joining the cast of ABC's popular sitcom "Three's Company" as the cad landlord Ralph Furley, a swinger who usually donned an ascot and bright, colorful leisure suits. He remained with the show until its final season in 1984.

In recent years, he had recurring roles on television, including a part on Griffith's show "Matlock" and the series "Pleasantville." He also performed in dinner theaters and did voice-over for animated films. Most recently, he was the voice of Mayor Turkey Lurkey in last year's "Chicken Little."

He was born Jesse Donald Knotts on July 21, 1924, in Morgantown, W.Va., where he grew up with three brothers. As a young man, he gravitated to the world of entertainment, starting as a ventriloquist. He lived in New York briefly before returning home and enrolling at West Virginia University.

He joined the Army during World War II and served as an entertainer. After the military, he returned to West Virginia University to finish his degree.

He worked in radio before getting his big break in the 1950s, when he won a spot to perform on "The Steve Allen Show." He drew howls from the audience playing a weatherman. The skit featured Mr. Knotts as a television weatherman forced to ad-lib the forecast without any information on the weather. As he wrote on a map about a weather system in California, stumbling over his words, it became clear he was writing "h-e-l-p."

His marriages to Kay Knotts and Loralee Knotts ended in divorce.

Survivors also include a son and a daughter.

He was 81. Knotts, who lived in West Los Angeles, died Friday night of lung cancer at UCLA Medical Center, according to Sherwin Bash, his longtime manager. Family members said that his longtime friend Griffth was one of his last visitors at Cedars on Friday night.

February 25, 2006 - Msg 34552: The Andy Griffith Show was one of the greatest. purest sitcoms ever to grace the airwaves. February 25, 2006 - Msg 34554: I just heard the sad news about Don Knotts. So I had to return to the Front Porch and post a comment.

Don's impersonation of the inept yet harmless Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife was brilliant. As far as I'm concerned, when Don left the show, much of the humor left with him.

Don, thank you for making us laugh. May you rest in peace.

February 25, 2006 - Msg 34567: So sorry to hear about Don Knotts. His portrayl of Barney Fife was my all time favorite character portrayl bar none. He excelled at his craft and his comedic genis will surely be missed. I feel like I have lost a friend. It is a very sad day.

February 25, 2006 - Msg 34568: Thank you, Floyd, we know you can't be everywhere at once, but you're keeping the place swept admirably.

It has occurred to me that as always, this porch mirrors small-town life. Friends and neighbors move away, but at a time like this, everyone comes home and spends a brief time together, consoling each other and remembering. Just read the posts above, and look at all the old-timers who have returned to share a moment with Mayberry friends. Rafe, Poor Horatio, and many others. As always, the question arises - why do we wait for such an occasion to come together? I really hope you folks will stick around.

I'm also impressed with the many who have come to the porch to express their condolences, even though we've never met. Perhaps they are friends who read but haven't claimed a rocker of their own. Please know that you are welcome, and we hope you'll join us on a regular basis.

To the person who posted the extensive notice in message #34543, and to those who posted the shorter notices, we thank you.

Don was a special, multi-talented man and he will be greatly missed. I propose that in a few days, when the impact has dulled a little, that we have a "Barney Quote-A-Thon" in his honor. Many come to mind right now, but are a bit too painful to write.

And a thank you to Mavis for welcoming me back. I've had some significant changes while I was away from The Front Porch. I retired early from full-time employment and I'm enjoying life being self-employed where I'm my own boss. I also met a special Canadian lady. We spend a lot of time together up in Canada.

Also, a great big hello to the other old-timers who have returned like I did. And finally, to all the regulars here who I don't know and who don't know me, a great big hello.

It's great to be back ... it's great to be home again.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34609: aaargh, there I go again and forgot to sign my post. That's me, Poor Horatio, posting Msg 34608.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34610: No thank you needed Poor Horatio I am just glad to see ya. I know what you mean by being your own boss, it's great ain't it?? I started my own Mobile Pet Grooming business last year & I just love it! *Mavis Place you can see what I am doing there.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34611: Poor Horatio, I thank you for your kind words about me, and may I say it's a special joy to welcome you home. I hope now that you're not tied to somebody else's desk, that you'll decide to make Mayberry your home again! Wish I could find some way to make a living from home, I'd retire from the hospital quicker than scat.

De§, it's wonderful to hear from you, girl. How are the kids? We've missed you around here. So many others, I can't possibly name everyone, but for those who are dropping by, consider this an all-encompassing welcome, and we hope you'll stay.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34612: I've tried to post something for a day or so now, and just dont have the words yet to convey what I'm feeling inside. It feels like part of the family has died. I'm sitting here wiping the tears from my eyes at some of the posts you all have made. I am glad that we have each other to lean on during this time. It helps to know that my porch family is feeling the same things I am. God Bless you Don, thanks for all the laughs and tears you have brought into my life.--Salty Dog

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34614: So sad about Don Knotts' death. I hope that everyone has the opportunity to leave a line or two over at the Memorial Page our always thoughtful and vigilant FLOYD has created for us.

It also was nice of ROMEENA to make sure all the new and returning friends were welcomed properly. It was nice to read through all the thoughtful posts here and at Miss Crumps. I do hope that those who have come back as well as those visiting for the first time will stop by regularly, or at least from time to time. The Porch is very friendly place.

Hey to MAVIS, ASA, BUCKEYE and all you regulars rocking this afternoon. Pleased to meet you MISS PEGGY, POOR HORATIO, and others who are settin' a spell. And did I see Mr. RAFE Hollister among you? A big how-dy to you.

AFD: That would be exciting to welcome our little girls on the same day. (No gambling on the Porch or Warren will come and lock you up!) Last one to have their baby has to name her "Hogette!"

Take care all.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34627: Got the news last night - we're in shock. Been watching my 5th season DVDs with Mom in honor of a great American, Don Knotts. Well, I know one fan that was in heaven waiting to greet him: my Dad passed on Feb 3rd. Barney has lended so many jokes and good times to my family that I'm sure Dad was hanging out with Howard McNear (Floyd) waiting on him. So good to hear that Andy Griffith was at his side.

Allan, thanks for the cleanup jobs, seems times like this brings them out of the woodwork.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34628: Hey to the porch...

Such a sad loss of such a great man. We'll always remember him for all the joy he brought into our lives, and we'll be thankful for that, till one day we're able to thank him in person. The hearts and lives he touched have made a difference in the world, and given us the shot in the arm we often need.

Prayers for Mr. Don Knotts family, both those who were close in life, and the family of all of us who were related through a town called Mayberry. We'll miss you Barn, but keep an eye out for us....we'll see you soon.

With sadness..

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34629: In reply to Me-They Msg 34624, I did a search through the archives to answer your question. Although the archives here begin on September 25, 2000, I can't find any of my frequent postings. So that means I was a regular here in the late 1990's. I made brief returns in October 2000, May 2004 and July 2004. And here I am again.

In reply to gomer's MSG 34626, thank you for the welcome back. And welcome back yourself!

If I missed anyone else's welcome back, I am truly sorry.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34630: Wow! Mrs. Wiley, Gomer, Salty Dog and so many others I can't keep up! It's so good to see you. Mrs. Wiley, I'm sorry to hear about your dad. You must miss him terribly. It's almost three years since my dad went home to be with the Lord, and I still miss him every day. And now Don Knotts' children are experiencing the loss. Isn't it wonderful to know that the loss isn't permanent? I feel so sorry for those who don't have that assurance. I can't imagine how heavy the grief must be for folks like that.

I can just imagine Don singing "a cappela" for real in Heaven's choir. Heaven's music must be beautiful beyond our imagination. Reckon that choir knows good ole' 14A?

Well, I have to work tonight, so guess I'd better get a little nap. It will be a long night. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34631: Hey to the Porch.
The absolute genius that was Don Knotts has enriched my life so much. In keeping with the Mardi Gras and New Orleans-style wakes/funerals, I choose to mourn his passing with a little humor and good times/memories thrown in.

Good to see everybody again.

I wasnt able to get to keyboard til just now. I just have to express my feelings also. In preachin' this morning we sang "I'll Fly Away" and I started tearing up in my eyes knowing what i knew about our beloved Don Knotts. This may sound corny to some, but I got almost the same feeling in my gut at hearing of his passing as i did with Pres. Kennedy back when i was a teenager! It aint nearly the same, but the loss is just so tremendous! Salty Dog, I think maybe that is what you were expressing.
Thanks 34572 fro such a great poem!!!
Asa, I think a little piece of all of us tags fans died with Don yesterday, because he was indeed a part of the family.
As they do when an officer of the law is fallen, we do one last call for Barney in the squad car from base. "Barn, this is Andy, you there? Over and out dear friend!"

Anyway, I rented TAGS Season 1 from the library (we do not get TVLand) and have had it on while busy with the taxes. I'm so happy watching the show, but sad at the same time watching Mr. Knott's at his best. It tells in the pilot that Barney was Andy's cousin. I don't remember it being said again. Can anyone remember him making that reference again?

Hope y'all have a nice evening!

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34652: Jelsik too?? It's like a southern style wake around here, everyone gathering in one place to honor the one that passed. February 26, 2006 - Msg 34661: You know something, friends? As I read these posts, and share in the sentiments, something has occurred to me. We are eulogizing and praising Don Knotts, and we should. He deserves all that, and more. However, right now let's not forget our dear Andy while he's still with us. Had he not had the grace and good sense to step aside and basically play the straight man to Don's goofiness, Barney would never have lived. That wasn't the original plan, but as Andy has said, he knew right away that Barney could be funnier than Sheriff Taylor, so he let him take it and run. Thanks, Ange. You did us all a favor. --Romeena

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34662: *Mavis, Jelsik, Gomer -- everyone! How wonderful to see all these familiar names again. The kids are doing great, Romeena. Remember when I was all worried over on the old porch about them starting kindergarten? Well that was coming up on 10 years ago and they'll be starting high school in August. Can you believe it? Where does the time go? One constant in our lives has been TAGS. Our Mayberry TV family is shrinking and I can't say I like the feel of it. But that's out of my hands. I think you're right about remembering Andy in our prayers. Please give my love to the Plum.
Hoping all the interlopers will get bored and find something else to entertain themselves with. Try counting your toes, fellas. (That ought to keep 'em busy for a day or two.) If that don't work, we can always say the incant.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34664: You are all such sweet, loving people and what a blessing to hear from so many old and new friends. Reminds me of when my beloved uncle passed away several years ago and everyone gathered for the funeral. All my cousins I had not seen in years were there. It was so hard to say goodbye to Uncle Wyatt but such a comfort to have all my loved ones together at one time. At times like that you realize what you mean to each other and time doesn't really matter, they are in your heart all the time. I think of all of you so many times. This morning in church, Erin got a Pixie Stick in sunday school and I thought of Asa, and when I was driving along the bay looking at the beautiful blue-green water and watching the sailboats and seagulls I though of how much I wish all of you could have seen that beautiful sight on such a lovely sunny day. It would have brightened your spirits. Having friends is such an amazing gift! God bless each of you today.

February 26, 2006 - Msg 34665: Evenin' Y'all.Well, the shock is starting to wear off a bit for me and the acceptance is beginning. I've been thinking all day along these lines (it's helping me and perhaps it will help someone else): As saddened as I am by Don Knotts' passing,I can only be so VERY grateful that we had him.
I've been trying to think of something that all of us Porchsters could do as a tribute to Don Knotts-Romeena mentioned a "quote-a-thon" which would be great.Or maybe we could pick a special day and everyone carry a bullet in our pocket in honor of our Barney. I'm suggesting to Mayor Buckeye that he issue a Proclamation (no,I'm not trying to get myself emancipated!!) that we set aside a special day in Don's honor.Mayor, give the word.
Have y'all read any of the posts on the memorial page that Floyd set up? I read the first page but that was about all I could take for now. Unbelievable tributes! Most echo the way I feel-that Don Knotts was like family.I know I sure feel that way-sure y'all do too.
Yes,the heavens are certainly nice and full tonight.
That's it-I'm about to get all teary eyed (again). Love to all!

Hello friends (and all the new folks too)...WOW the porch is so full. Good to see you all. This just shows how much "our" Barn was loved.

One thing that has bothered me and I must say it...I use earthlink for my internet provider and on the home page they have all the news headlines listed when you sign on (from political to sports to entertanment, etc.) and not once have they mentioned the passing of Mr. Knotts. That really bugs me!
