Good morning everyone - I am just a little harried over a parent who says that I am not working with their child (I am there 3 days a week instead of 2 days a week, yes, I volunteerily add a day to help her) and that her grades are not good enough (she makes 85% or better in most classes). So now I have to go back through all of my consultation and travel logs to prove to my director that I have been seeing this student and what we worked on. Geesh - and this parent is never home to work with their child, it all rests on my shoulders.
And it is only Tuesday!
Another three babies - so far so good - they keep me busy!

Good (almost) afternoon everyone! A little chilly on the Porch today. Hey to Spot, Goober, HM, Romeena, MDC and anybody else napping on the Porch.
Mind if I make a comment? Mrs. Me-They has been working nights (three twelves a week) at a hospital for about seven years. She did it so our daughter--now kids--wouldn't have to do the daycare thing. With one in Kindergarten, one at home and one on the way, you can imagine that the amount of time she gets to sleep is not enviable. Still, she manages to give our kids quality "mom time," volunteers for every party and special event at school, and makes it to every teacher conference. I do my best to make them as well, though I can't always get off work. Now, I'm not trying to toot my own horn--though I have absolutely no problem tooting my wife's; she's wonderful--but when you have kids you are taking on a responsibility that cannot be given away to teachers or anybody else. In my opinion, when you have kids, whatever or whoever was number one had been move to at least number two. We are bombarded with talk today that everyone "deserves to be happy" and so we can feel good about making decisions that benefit us first and foremost. Well, if there was a lot more of putting one's own personal "happiness" behind the well-being of kids (and that includes discipline, by the way), how much better of a society would we have? Reading the posts here make me feel like I'm not crazy for feeling this way. All of you with kids sound like such wonderful, loving parents. Well, that's my piece.

ROMEENA: My wife works in OR/Recovery. She used to work on a med-surg floor, but figured the less hectic (and fewer patients, especially at night) in OR/Rec would be a better balance to the energy bouncing off the walls at home. She's worked that department for about four years. She often jokes that she brings down the median age in her deptartment quite a bit. (At least at her hospital, most of the nurses in OR/Rec are older.) She misses getting to know some of patients, but whenever she gets one like the one you had the other day, she's glad they are "in and out" to another floor quick. She does indeed have a heavy load, and the plan is for her to cut back in another year or two. We certainly don't live large by any measure, but it's tough making it today. Once they were seated at their table, one of the mothers brought the kids into the bar/lounge and told--not asked--the bartender to keep an eye on the kids so the mothers could have "girl time." Can you believe that? Dropped the kids in the bar! Well, the manager told them they could seat the kids at their table or they would have to leave. And they actually got angry and threatened to call the owner and complain! Some people.

M-T-Back in the mid-'80's I almost got a job at the Buffalo Museum of Science but I really didn't want to relocate to the Buffalo area and they weren't sure if they wanted to count on someone driving up from the "snow belt" (local term). Well, I guess they were sure they didn't want to rely on someone driving up from the snow belt, they didn't give me the job. That falls under the category of "would'a could'a should'a." Early American history is my favorite era also not so much the social issues I guess, I'm more of a Founding Fathers type. Although, the slavery issue is fascinating.

For the first twelve years of my career at our hospital, I worked on a very busy med/surg floor, and saw just about everything that occurs in the human condition. For five years after that, I worked all over the house - "floated" wherever I was needed. ICU, CCU, Oncology, Med/surg, whatever. You name it, I've probably seen it, done it, or assisted with it. Hey all - guess what I saw today?? SNOW!! We actually had big flaky snow. I'd about forgot what it looked like. My porch hasn't seen but just one small smattering of snow (back in December - about and inch or so) this winter. It didn't stick today but it sure was purty.
I started out in college as a Secondary Ed - History major (almost 19 years ago). I try to read at least one non fiction book a month and its usually political or historical. I have never read 1776, though, so I'll have to check it out.
Me-They: You asked several days back if we were going to find out what we're having. I want to know but husband is leaning more towards getting a surprise. I go in 2 weeks for the ultrasound, so I'll have to use all the powers of persuasion I have (food and the TV remote) to get him to want to find out. We already have a name picked for a boy and a middle name for a girl (which will be the same as the boys middle name), but still deciding in a girl first name.
I am enjoying all the pics everyone's sent to Ro. : ) My nephew took some a couple weeks back of us, so I'll have to see about getting those to send to her as well.
Prayers for all!

Good to hear from you, AFD. We are going for our ultrasound on the 20th, so if all goes as planned we will find out then. The ultrasounds for our otehr two were very clear so hopefully this one will be as well. I don't think either one of us could handle the suspense. (Plus, we've got to know whether I need to drag out and unpack the girl things or the boy things.) We've decided on a girl's first and middle names and are about 75% decided on a boy's first name. Still need a middle.
Snow? What's that? We also haven't seen much of the stuff since December when we got a couple of inches. Now, I'm not one to crave a lot of snow, and I could do without all that shoveling, but a little of the white stuff every now again is kinda nice. MDC: I sure wish I could box up all the rain we've gotten this winter and send some to you. It's rained so much and the temperature has been so mild here that until the last week the ground hasn't really been frozen. So it's been pretty muddy. Also, we have flowers budding (that usually don't bud until late March) and I hope the recent cold snap (actually, seasonal weather) doesn't fry 'em.
Oh, I've been a motormouth today. I'll hesh up, sit back, relax and enjoy listening for awhile.

Good evening, all. The Plum and I did indeed get a little rest, and are much the better for it. How can I best describe my feelings right now, considering I don't have to get dressed and go to work. Let's see...how's this? YIPPEEEEE! Does that about do it?
I'm sitting here at my big old window, looking out into the back yard, and it's just so nice out there. The late afternoon light was beautiful, and now the sun has just gone down, the colored lights on the back fence just switched on, yet it's still light enough to see every detail of flower, stone and fountain. The fountain lights will kick on soon. Leaving this window on my work evenings is very difficult. This is where I commune with friends via email, phone and this TAGS site, and where I commune with nature and God as I enjoy the beauty He has provided. I'm so blessed.
MDC, I agree. Coretta Scott King was a fine lady, a class act. I didn't get to see the telecasts on that day, so don't know the specifics to which you refer, but if someone turned that tribute to her into a political platform, then shame on them. They can think and believe what they will, but they should not superimpose such things over a ceremony that should have been a simple expression of honor to a great and courageous lady.
Well, it's oven-broiled chicken legs with lemon pepper, and rice and asparagus for me tonight. I'm making plenty, come on by if you're hungry!

Howdy Folks,
Romeena-I love sitting at our table also and just looking at all the beauty that nature brings. Even with all the snow, we see turkey, deer, cardinals and blue jays just about everyday. But, after reading your post above.... I want your window. I wonder if there is any trouble regarding coveting your neighbors window? Maybe one of the preachers can tackle that. I think I said this before but you draw a beautiful picture. I bet you make a wonderful nurse, very calming I bet.
One more mention of the King funeral, I loved the way President Bush was the first to his feet after every speaker. Furthermore, I loved the way he shook the hand of those who took advantage of network coverage to spout their drivel and attack him instead of paying respect to Coretta Scott King. Everyone has a right to their opinions but how small must someone be campaign during a funeral.
MDC-I loved the Currier and Ives reference.

Rev, and auh2o, you're both very kind, and I appreciate your words. I can only hope that I deserve some small portion of what you said. I'm sure that some of my patients would disagree, as I can also be Nurse Ratchett when the situation merits it. When someone can and should be up and moving, I don't baby them, I make them do for themselves. With some cultures, that's a whole new concept for them and they really don't like it! Still, I stick to what's best for the patient, popular or not.
Elmer and Ruth, you can see the pictures of some of the porchsters at: romeena.myphotoalbum.com - click on the "Porchsters" album. You can browse the other albums as well if you wish, but they're my own, my family and such, and probably not of much interest.
Does anyone besides me read the newspaper comics? I've always loved them, and for years have enjoyed reading "Shoe", the one where all the characters are birds. Shoe himself is a newspaperman. Well, have you ever noticed the glaring resemblance between the old senator bird and Ted Kennedy? It's hilarious! Just too funny, I love it!
MDC, did you not receive four pictures back? That's what I received, and am sure I put all four in the envelope. I don't see one around here, but considering the condition of my desk, I wouldn't bet the ranch on it. The only pictures I received were the four I put in the album, and am sure I sent them all four back. Have I missed something?
Well, even though I'm off tonight, I have to be at the hospital in the morning for some infernal meeting, where we will be given information that could have been printed and handed to us, but hey - they'll pay me for my time, and the manager is offended if we don't show up, so guess I'll go. You know, I got into nursing to deliver patient care, not to attend meetings, but such is life.

Good morning everyone. CHUCK: We just love "Columbo." I've seen every one almost as many times as I've seen TAGS. I'm into detective shows that are entertaining but not gross. I also really enjoy "Monk," "Poirot" (David Suchet), and "The Rockford Files." I try to catch them whenever they are on. Also a new one PBS airs on Mystery from time to time called "Foyle's War." He's a British policeman during WWII. It's really well-done.

MDC, lots of prayers for you during this time...it's tough to make those decisions...and I can't beleive how much my perspective changed duing the time with my dad. I always said I'd never let him go into hospice or even nursing home care...I was wrong, and I learned a lot about what goes on and how caring most of the folks who give that much needed care are. Sometimes it's hard to see beyond our needs, and see the fault in our thinking. I'll pray that you and yours can find what's best for all involved.

Good evening, all. Please keep at least three feet back from me, I've got a miserable, wet, nasty, sneezy, headachy cold and I don't want any of you to get it. Grrrr! I hate feeling like this!
In spite of this cold, I spent some time in the back yard today, and made a wondrous discovery. I have a beautiful iris blooming! There's a picture on the photo website, the last one in the "Yard and Wildlife" album. Feel free to check it out. It's really beautiful. The rhizome that produced it was given to me by my landscaper friend - he dug it out of his own yard and brought it with him one day and planted it. He said it would be pretty, and was he ever right!
Well, I think I'll take my cold and put it to bed. Poor Plum, she'll have to listen to me coughing and snuffling all night. At some point, she'll sigh deeply and pointedly, climb down off the bed and go get in her crate to sleep. I get no sympathy from her, the little brat.

Hope you get feeling better Romeena. I hate colds. I don't mind getting regular sick, but I hate colds (in my best Lydia voice).
MDC, I know what you are up against having gone through it myself last year. I will tell you this though. We got hospice involved with my Dad in the last week of his life. I was reluctant to do so because I always looked at hospice as throwing in the towel so to speak. I wish now, knowing what I do, that I would have involved them sooner. They were a great help to him, and a huge support to us (the surviving family). They usually will not take on a case until there is an indication of 6 months of life left or less, so I'm not sure what your Mothers health is like. But you have my prayers as you go through what is a most difficult time. Hang in there and lean on Him.
You be careful Mavis. I think I have a penny here for you also as you travel.
