No snow here in Arkansas today. In fact, I enjoyed 18 holes, though is was a little brisk and breezy.

Trivia: What was Mayberry High's Mascot?

February 04, 2006 - Msg 33581: Mack, there is nothing wrong with your inviting folks to your church, though I didn't really see any invitation in the bulletin you copied for us here. However, it might be difficult for us to attend your church, since most porch people are hundreds or even thousands of real miles apart. My concerns about you have nothing to do with your church bulletin, however. Back in the last archive, you posted a very strange message, questioning the reality and the origins of the events of 9/11. This came right on the heels of some quite normal, TAGS related posts. Perhaps you don't see this as odd, but most porchsters will. As I believe you have been told before, when you visited us in the past, if you want to visit the porch and play nice, you're welcome. If you're here to play mind games, you've come to the wrong place. Call that "tude" if you wish, but I'm not alone in that sentiment, believe me. --Romeena

Chuck, you golfed yesterday? I am envious! I was hoping to but we still have a little snow on the ground, and got more last night, so I guess it will be a while yet.

Mavis, I can't tell you how nice it is to have you back posting with us regular like. I sure wish we could get all the old timers back on here regular like. (I'm not calling you old btw.:))

February 05, 2006 - Msg 33601: Howdy, all. That Floyd is a caution. He's right on top of things, and I'm glad.

Asa, you poor dear! You never ate peanut butter pie? Honey, that's the bestest thing ever! There's different ways of making it - I have a couple of recipes myself - but Mavis's sounds really wonderful! Anything with cream cheese in it is gonna be my favorite. One of my recipes uses chunky peanut butter instead of smooth, and let me tell you, it's not too shabby!

Beautiful here today. A little cool, but not cold, sun peeking in and out. I just put out critter feed, and there are birds and squirrels all over the yard. My flowers are blooming - pansies, snapdragons, a few dianthus, a few roses, cyclamen, Mexican daisies - all blooming, and everything else is either budding or poking up out of the ground, depending on what it is. I even have a beautiful royal blue iris about to open, and my fringe flower shrub is a glorious rosy show. Kinda scary, as we can get some really wicked weather in February, and everything could get frozen back. I can hardly wait for spring!

By the way - does anyone want some peppermint? I made the mistake of planting one compartment in my island flowerbed with peppermint. The first year it sat there in its little section, just a lovely emerald mound. The second year the miserable stuff popped up absolutely everywhere! There are healthy plants twelve feet away from the parent plant. I'm digging it out and giving it away, throwing it away, whatever. If you plant peppermint, be sure to put it in a pot, not in the ground. A word to the wise.....

Well, gotta run. I have to pick up some tamales from the local taqueria, and take them to a friend's house for her super bowl party. I don't care one whit about the game, but the fellowship will be fun.

My RR layout is about 12 ft by 7 ft, 3 tracks. Glad ya like it. Your snail mail is finally going out tomorrow buckeye. Sorry for the delay.

(the DVD) I got it in December and am just now watching it. Boy, I think more than any of the other seasons, this one has more parts that I've never seen before! It is great! I know TV land and the local networks have to skip over some parts to make it all fit, but, Shasam, they sure delete some of the best parts. Ate waaaay yonder too much, I think I'll declare a moratorium on eating for the next couple of days. My clothes are getting tight and I don't need to be packing this excess weight around. Hard on the knees, the back, the blood pressure and the self-esteem. Not to mention the diabetes. So, gotta take care of the problem.

MDC, your train layout is cool. Spot thinks so, too. Based on his comment, I wouldn't be surprised if he sets up a model, too. I think it's great that you big old grown-up guys still like to play with trains. Romeena, Chuck, you got me confused with Judd. He was the feller who got in a fight with Chester Jones. Britcoms, Romeena? Which ones do you watch? I like Are You Being Served? and the spin-off Are You Being Served? Again! the most. But I also liked Fawlty Towers and one called Good Neighbors. Any of those ring a bell?

Have a nice night everyone.

February 06, 2006 - Msg 33634: Good morning, all. Sterling, I like all the ones you mentioned, and several others - "Keeping Up Appearances", (isn't Hyacinth just awful?) and I used to particularly like "To the Manor Born", but haven't seen it in a long time. "Open All Hours" is another that's funny, with Ronnie Barker doing his stuttering thing. "Allo, Allo" is funny, too. It all began for me about thirty years ago with a delightful series called "No, Honestly!" Very funny, those Britcoms. It takes a little while to get on their wavelength and appreciate their humor, but I love them. Prayers for little Kai, and for you, as you go through all this with her.

Snowed in, auh20? I can't imagine. My grass is green, my flowers are blooming, birds are playing in the birdbath and trying to figure out how to drink from the umbrella fountain. It can get cold here, and probably will, and will freeze everything, but it'll come back. If it doesn't freeze hard, we'll just continue this very early Spring and enjoy a much longer blooming season for everything. I've got some pansies right now that are just spectacular. Seems like every year somebody develops a new variety, and I just love them.

Still, I have to confess. As much as I enjoy our early spring and all the flowers, it would be a lot of fun to have a generous snowfall once in a while. The kids would love it, and it's so beautiful. Of course, there would be carnage on the roads, as the road crews are poorly-equipped to handle the conditions, and no one around here knows how to drive on snow or ice. I lived in Missouri long enough to learn that the best way to drive on ice, is don't.

Well, off I go. I've run out of clothes, so guess I'd better do some laundry. I hope Barney doesn't come by and "borrow" one of my outfits! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Me? I just started playing 5 months ago, so I promise you my game is NOT impressive. But like I said, I sure have fun trying. I'm playing with a set of Golden Bear that I got off ebay. I usually double bogey every hole, par 3's included. Don't know why.

Romeena, Oreo sounds good to me!

February 06, 2006 - Msg 33638: Mornin" Prayers for Kai!! Sterling, Please let us know how the check up goes. I have an enlarged heart and have to watch some activity, but for the most part, do everything fine. (I tell my wife that I am just "big hearted" ha) Pappabear- envelope is in the mail. Also, about your comment awhile back about guessing what we looked like etc, they say that is why old radio shows like Lone Ranger, The Shadow, etc were good because the characters were in each listeners imagination!
Asa- yes, the Phoenix FBR Open was here this past week. Record attendance!
HM- Congrats again! Wow, yes indeed, let's eee em.
Forgot to tell you that my train pics are BW because they were taken for a magazine contest, and BW makes it look more "realistic". (It's not that I'm totally stuck in Mayberry pre- 65 ! haha
Spot would be a fine mayor. BTW spot, my train layout ended up to be about a $500 investment. We have a neat store here called Roy's Train World where I spent a bit o time on weekends. Wifey says at least i'm not in the bars, haha
Buckeye, let's see yours. Love your Capt Kangaroo impression!
Hazel- Yes, lots of neat senes in season 4. Also glad that the previews are on a separate menu!! Season three ya gotta watch them all, I cant even get them to fast forward.
Anyone got any interesting Valentine stories (that you can share that is, ha)
Have a good day!

Hello porch...Good to be back....Had a great weekend of services....But it was cold in north Ga.....Had a little snow on top of the mountains.

Chuck..Never thought about the drug store being open on Sunday but since you mentioned it you're right.

As I travel I love to read church signs. Driving through the night to get home this morning I saw a one that read:
CHURCH - A hospital for sinners; not a museum for saints.

GOD IS GOOD!!

Hey again, again

Is there a prize for most visits in one day?

Hey- ole buckeye!

Sterling-Will be thinking and praying for you and Kai.

Romeena-You do paint a nice picture. It sounds beautiful. I love spring more than any other season, something about the renewal of it I think. It's not quite like the Overlook in "The Shinning" here but we sure are rural and I love it. One thing about these "lake effect" snow storms, as Asa knows, it can look like Ice Station Zebra one minute and the next the sun will be shinning. Shinning twice in one post, hmm. I guess that's 3 times.

MDC-I love checking out one of your local papers web sites this time of year, The Arizona Republic. It has great baseball coverage, 9 days pitchers and catchers report.

Rev- I am sure you've seen this one but the United Methodist Church, next town over, had a sign a few weeks back that read, "What's missing CHCH? UR"

AUh2O, you can get the same coverage in our more conservative paper, The East Valley Tribune. You might want to give it gander.
Believe it or not, the other one you mentioned used to be called The Arizona Republican, but when it's accomplihed owner and publisher, Eugene Pulliam died, it was bought by, let's say, quite a outfit! ha
Forgot to mention a few things from the album:
Chuck- that's a lot of lip gloss! haha
MDeputy- that is Dale E on the shirt, right?
RO- In the shot out your window, where the squirrel is looking in (Computer screen in corner) where abouts was your "leaning pole?" Just curious.
G'day,

February 06, 2006 - Msg 33644: I just got my "Make Room For Daddy" season FIVE in today from Ebay.
I really like TAGS pilot episode on there. Very fun to watch.
Mr. Drucker from Green Acres is the town drunk in the pilot, and if I remember correctly, he's also a town drunk in another town near Mayberry in one of the episodes (from season five?).

Buckeye- we got a new post-er at the Rifleman site! Chewin' Charlie.
CHUCK, is that you by any chance?
Anyone remember those old cartoons that were kinda like short funny 'documentaries'. I recall one that was doing a "tour" of a farmyard and they came to the rabbits and the narrator said, "yes, they are always multiplying," and then there would be a close up of the rabbits with heads together and you heard them "9 times 9 is 81" etc. Those were always cute and funny.
Buckeye, which old radio shows do your remember?
In my very early years I remember my mom like Aunt Bee, listening to the radio soaps with lots of organ music, brought to you by Oxydol... ha "meanwhile..."

February 06, 2006 - Msg 33657: Hi, all. Mavis, I just posted your new pics. Yours, too, auh2o. Mercy, that is some snowfall! I'll be looking for more pictures from the rest of you.

MDC, to answer your question about the pole, it can be seen in the other picture of the squirrel at the window. It's looming over the little arbor at the back of the yard, but because of the angle - it's leaning toward the camera - it's hard to tell that it's not straight. Also, when that picture was taken, about two years ago, it was only about two feet out of plumb. It made it to about eight feet out of plumb before they finally replaced it. It was just on the verge of falling down, not much holding it but the wires. That picture looks funny to me now, because the landscaping has matured so much since then. The eleagnes shrubs on the fence are now about four feet wide and have to be trimmed at the topline so they don't extend beyond the fence, and the nandinas beside the arbor are over four feet high and very thick and pretty, loaded with berries right now. Also, there's a huge boulder, shaped like a chaise lounge, on the window side of the rose bed now. Very unique.

Rev, a few months after my husband passed away, in 1996, I saw a church sign that helped me a little. I cried several times a day for about two years, so you'll understand why this sign was special. It read, "Tears are a language that God understands." I've never forgotten that.

Well, gotta get ready to go to work. Have a great evening, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Good seeing you all on the porch tonight. Sure am glad we have a heater on the porch though. Everybody scoot your chair up close to the fire.

Just got in from a basketball game at my daughter's college. (We won) It is so messy outside tonight here in SC. So far it's not freezing though.

Ole buckeye...You ask how I pick the churches that I go to...well most of my tours are set up from year to year in the same areas. As for new churches, they contact us and we just set up a date when we are going to be near that area. We can usually work dates in.

Ro...That sign is so true. Thank you so much for sharing it with me. I've never seen that one. I may use it on my monthly e-newsletter.

And yes auh2o...I've used that one before. It's a good one also.

Kai came through with flying colors. The doctor even said that she doesn't think Kai would have to be re-checked for about 8 months, although some of that was because she said the couple of months before then are terrible there with school physicals and all, but she did also say that Kai's velocity(of blood through the valves) was only slightly higher than her last checkup - a very, very minute change in fact. So she felt confident to schedule her next appointment in Oct. So we continue to have good news where that is concerned. Thank God!
Yes, Chuck, Kai is a little trooper! I think I have told this story before but you are new so I can tell it again.:) Kai had a heart catheter procedure when she was 6 or 7 months old. The doctors had given us plenty of warning that she might be groggy afterward and figety and ornery, so we were kind of concerned as to how she would react and especially how much pain she would be in.
Well - and I remember this like it was yesterday and I always will - we noticed Kai waking up from the anesthetic so I took her little hand and leaned over the bars(on the bed). She opened her beautiful eyes and looked at me with just the prettiest, sweetest smile I had ever seen. It was then that I knew that she was going to be ok, and she was. She wasn't ornery or anything and it was like nothing happened.
Btw Chuck, I don't believe I have said "Hey" to you, so Hey! :) Glad to have you on the porch! This is a fine place to be.

February 07, 2006 - Msg 33677: Hey Fred Goss/Hodie Snitch, I never did get the answer on Mayberry's Mascot. I asked the question trivia style by accident. I don't know the answer myself, but would like to. Speaking of mascots, our local high school (of which I have to daughters attending)won the state championship in class AAAA Football this past season. Only the second time in school history, and our quarterback received a full scholarship to play for the Miami Hurricanes. He was our FIRST D1 recruit.
Everytime I spell receive, I think of this line: Andy: "I before E except after c, and e before n in chicken". Chuck

February 07, 2006 - Msg 33678: chuck, congrats on your daughters high school. i think the reason no one answered the mascot question cause we don't remember? was it the cougers. sterling, praise the lord dear kai's alright. rev- if you wanted to e- mail someone so you can let is know how to book or your schedule, that would be a treat. mavis, there is no great gunsmoke sites, you can go to gunsmoke. net. gunsmoke is at targets on dvd set for 29.99 . February 07, 2006 - Msg 33680: Morning porch. My goodness you all been talking and talking and talking. It's good to hear.

Spot, y'all be careful on your little trip. It's only and hour and a half drive, but they say most accidents happen within 5 miles of home. I didn't know that. Have you considered moving to a safer area? LOL

Mavis, so you're a Bonanza fan huh? Do you post over there? Under what name? Last week when I was in Vegas I was talking to a feller from the Carson city area. I told him that I wanted to visit the area again someday and go visit the Ponderosa. There is a resort type place there that takes off on the show. I should say there was one. He sadly informed me it had been sold, leveled, and turned into a housing development. Sad huh?

Chuck, I have been golfing for over 20 years now. Didn't pick up a club till I was 21 and fell in love with it. I'm not great, but I have fun. I wish I had more time to get out, but just got to many other things going on. Maybe some day when I retire I can.
Romeena, do you work nights all the time, or do your shifts bounce around some? I was reading about Mike Holmgren's wife (he is the Seahawks head coach) and about how his wife and daughter this week are in the Congo on a medical mission. His wife had done it many years ago and wanted to go again, with their daughter who is a Doctor. Anyway it got me thinking of you. Her description of the Congon's sounded much like your's of the Mongolian's. Very poor, very humble, but happy and friendly.

Glad Kai is doing well Sterling. I know that is such a worry.

Hey Rev, what's the sermon on Sundat going to be on? Sin? Well, you can't say enough about that. That reminds me of a dialouge between Archie Bunker and his wife Edith. She had just come home from preaching. It went something like this.
Edith: Oh Archie, I wish you'd have come with me to church this morning. It was wonderful
Archie: Oh yea? So what did the Rev. Fletcher have to say?
Edith: Feltcher
Archie: Whatever!
Edith: It was all about sin.
Archie: Oh yea? What side was the Rev. on?
Oh that Archie was a bird.
Have a great day everyone.

Sterling, that's good news about Kai. One of these days she'll be running around all healthy and you won't even remember when she had problems.

Buckeye, I'll be watching for the snail, and snag your pictures as he slides on by. Thanks for sending them.
