December 06, 2005 - Msg 32062: Wow, it's good to see Mrs. Wiley after such a long spell. Hang in there, friend. Things just have to get better.

As for Charlotte Tucker, she's okay, I'm in touch with her by email now and then. She asked me to write a short article about Mongolia, I did, and she published it! Yay! I've been published!

Well, time to scare up some supper, and then maybe get a few packages wrapped. The tree is finally done, and most of the house is back to normal, and gently decorated. This year, in deference to my knee, I gave myself permission to leave some of the decorations in the closets, and didn't put quite everything out. Actually, I think it looks better. There is a limit to the chair and floor space that should be devoted to dozens of teddy bears. I think I'm going to find some of them a new home - I have some ideas.

December 06, 2005 - Msg 32063: I hope it didn't sound like I was getting on to anybody there...it was just a heads up that it can cause problems if you use HTML and don't do it correctly. I guess I could work on the script to fix that.....Maybe I will add something to help you post like that. Maybe a preview or something? Any thoughts?

I've always kept the Porch simple and haven't updated anything about it ever because it was just like the original porch from way back when. I guess I could do a little modification or maybe at least do "behind the sceens" stuff that folks wouldn't see but that would look for certain problems.

December 06, 2005 - Msg 32064: Ky girl....No problem with the questions. I love what I do so I don't mind talking about it. To answer your question, I do pretty much all original music. I've used a co-writer on a few of my songs but pretty much it's all me and the Lord. As for style it would be considered Christian Country.
Be blessed....

December 06, 2005 - Msg 32065: Don't worry about it Floyd. I say keep it simple and make it easier for yourself (that's my humble opinion anyways). You did sound kind of mad, though and it made me real glad I wasn't the one who messed things up (heehee)! Enjoyed the Christmas cards, by the way. Your little boy is a cutie-pie!

ASA, that poor Barney! My sister used to have a terrier that had a "rubber hamburger disorder" too. She went into some kind of panic attack when it was removed from her sight, she would cry and whine like crazy. She did finally get over it, though. Dogs are so wonderfully weird.

REV, thanks for your kind words about the porch. We are pretty close and really care about each other. I hope you will continue to join us and become one of the family. Do you have a web site we could access and maybe purchase a DVD?

Hey MRS. WILEY! So good to hear from you again. Sorry you are having some difficulties. Prayers for you and your situation...we understand and we never forget about you.

I am going to share a Christmas story that I have shared here before but its one of my favorites and I would like to share it with some of the newer porch friends. This story is about my great grandmother, Victoria. She and her husband and children lived in a small mining town in West Virginia. They, like all the miners in that day, were poor but had enough to eat and a roof over their heads. Victoria had 6 children, five girls and one son. One of her daughters was my grandmother, Edna. When Edna was still a child, her father was caught in a cave-in in the mines. There was no hospital nearby so they took him home to wait for the train to come in the morning and deliver him to a hospital in the city, but he didn't make it. His body was crushed but he was conscious. My grandmother told us that he called for her during the night but she was too afraid and wouldn't go in to him before he died. Well, after his death, Victoria was left to care for her family (before welfare and food stamps). She was a woman of great faith and God provided. They never starved but things were hard. When Christmas came the year her husband died, she had nothing to give the children and her two youngest girls were too young to understand that Santa couldn't come that year. They refused to believe it and insisted that Santa would bring them new dolls for Christmas. On Christmas eve, they sat their little chairs beside their beds so Santa could fill them during the night. Poor Victoria was grieved by the thought of her littles ones being so dissapointed in the morning. She sat down in the living room and cried. While she sat there, she heard a knock at the front door. It was her brother that she had not seen in years. He surprised her with a visit on Christmas and when he heard about the children having no gifts, he walked to town and got the store keeper out of bed. He bought gifts, including two new dolls. When the little girls woke up, there were their new dolls from Santa. Victoria passed that story on to her children and they passed it on to me. Thanks for listening!

Yes, it's exciting to have something published. I contribute to a friend's blog now and then, and then there were the Mongolia journals, though those were done in email format - no money there. My dream would be to find a venue where I could write for publication and get paid. If I could make enough money at it, I'd retire from the hospital so fast they wouldn't even remember I'd been there. Anybody got any ideas? I like to write short stories, just give me a topic and I'll write you a story. I'd even write instruction manuals for new products. I just love a keyboard!

1. Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, have a
little beverage, good food and companionship.
She goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.

2. We also sleep in separate beds.
Hers is in California and mine is in Texas.

3. I take my wife everywhere.....
but she keeps finding her way back.

4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our
anniversary. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!"
she said.
So I suggested the kitchen.

5. We always hold hands.
If I let go, she shops.

6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric
bread maker.
She said "There are too many gadgets and no place
to sit down!" .. So I bought her an electric chair.

7. My wife told me the car wasn't running well because
there was water in the carburetor.
I asked where the car was; she told me "In the lake."

8. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days.
Then the mud fell off.

9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling "Am I too late
for the garbage?" .... The driver said "No, jump in!"

10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.

11. I married Miss Right. I just didn't know her
first name was Always.

12. I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months.
I don't like to interrupt her.

13. The last fight was my fault though.
! My wife asked "What's on the TV?"
I said "Dust!"

Can't you just hear him say all of these?
I love it.........this is the good old days
when humor didn't have to start with a four letter word........ just

December 07, 2005 - Msg 32078: PAPPA BEAR: I live in a small unincorporated town about 30 miles east of Baltimore, and work in Frederick, a small city by most standards, about 25 miles west of where I live. My county has gone from rural to suburban in the last few decades. The population has actually quadrupled since 1970. Our proximity to Washington (about a 45 minutes commute) has led to a real building boom. It's kind of a shame. I can't blame anyone for wanting to move here, but farmland is being gobbled up faster and faster. And the property values skyrocketing have led to skyrocketing property taxes as well. Unfortunately, housing prices have tripled in just six years so many who have grown up here can't afford a house here anymore. Oh, well. It's still a great place to raise kids.

what i want most this christmas,
more now than years before,
is not material in worth,
but means a whole lot more.
idon't want fancy jewelry
or silky clothes to wear;
these things don't really matter,
nor show how much we care.
it's peace I want this christmas,
and peace, my heart to bear...
a unity from shore to shore,
a gift of love to share.
Dear Lord, I pray in earnest
you'll read my christmas list...
for peace is all I want this year,
and peace is what I wish.
that when I wake tomorrow,
on the day Your Son was born,
the world will have a brand-new gift
of peace this christmas morn.

December 07, 2005 - Msg 32085: Well, no landscaper friend here today! I'm glad, because I wasn't looking forward to chipping him out of the ice in the fishpond.

Aren't neighbors wonderful? I have a huge Boston fern hanging out in the arbor, and it was not long for this world in these freezing temperatures. My neighbor and garden center owner friend remembered that he had sold me the fern in the spring, and sent his son over to bring it in for me. No way could I have gotten it down and carried it in. It's at least five feet in diameter, and very heavy. The young man (I've known him since he was born) also installed a hook and hung the fern in the sunroom. It will be happy there, and should be even more beautiful by spring.

The yard is just teeming with wildlife. Four squirrels, countless birds of at least a dozen varieties. All have come to fuel up with the critter feed I put out. Poor things, I can't help that they're cold, but they don't have to be hungry if they can find my yard. I have a bag of fresh cranberries that are not going to be used. I think I'll chop them and mix them with some old cereal and a bit of peanut butter and put the mix out there in a pan. Bet they'll like it!

I absolutely LOVED the Red Skelton quotes! I was sitting here snickering all by myself!

Someone told me today to look on the bright side of things...the sun is out and shining...so I told her, "Yeah, now I can see all the dirt on my windows!" ;)

Ro, it sounds like you have some wonderful neighbors! I have a kind neighbor type of story too. My van had a very low tire on it, almost flat, so I took it to my mechanic. He had it for almost an hour and when he was done, he said, "Your all set. And when I say 'all set', I mean you don't owe me anything!" Wasn't that nice of them? They put air in all my tires and made sure the van was road-worthy before they sent me on my way!

Thanks for the poem Tom. Another beauty.

Pappabear, my dad enlisted in the navy right after Pearl Harbor, and he was only 15 years of age. He lied about his age to get in. I guess a lot of men from his generation did that. He was on a PT boat during WWII and the Korean War. (He also lied to my mother and told her he didn't reenlist. They got married and on their wedding night he told her the truth! Their marriage almost ended right then and there, but they stayed married for 35 years until my dad passed.)

Well, wordy me! Guess I better get up off this 'chere rocker and get back to work!

December 07, 2005 - Msg 32096: Howdy, all! AFD, about 12 or 14 years ago, I had a series of terrible headaches that just about did me in. Migraines, I guess. It felt like my head was in a vise. Anyway, since I can't take anything of a narcotic nature, I had a problem. I learned to take two extra strength Tylenol, then drink a coke or Pepsi, anything cola, and in about thirty minutes I'd take three Advil and drink another cola. Most of the time, it worked. It usually didn't go away completely, but at least I'd be functional for a few hours. It might not work for everyone, and don't try it if you're allergic to any of those things or to aspirin, but it worked for me.

Dud Wash, it's good to have you join us. You're welcome any ole time!

It's just ridiculously cold here. 20 degrees! The very idea! I turned my sprinkler system off. Was tempted to leave it on, because it would make some spectacular ice displays in the morning on all the trees and shrubs, but would also break a lot of things, and might not be too good for my lighted deer and things. Of course, they'll be off by then, but I'm still not sure they'd like it much. Would probably trip the GFCIs for sure.

Well, I'm thinking a cup of hot tea would go well right now. Wish I had made some shortbread today! Oh, well, there's always tomorrow.

The cause of the last headache was some perfume I got a good whiff of - just about did me in. I think the others were caused from another condition - a rather delicate condition. Yep, folks, a little leg a lamb in on the way to AFD's house. I went in today for an ultrasound and found out I'm almost 8 weeks. Due date is 7/21. I told the gal that 7/21 was a good day, because it was Don Knotts' birthday, and I said maybe I'd name it Barney Fife. She laughed and I told her that I'm a big fan of TAGS. She says she was laughing not that I'd call it Barney, but from the fact that I would even know it was his birthday.

Well, my 5 year old daughter Kai has taken to calling me "Dad"(instead of Daddy) and her Mommy "Mom". I didn't think that happened until kids were in their early teens or something. ...oh, wait, in her teens she'll start calling us "my old man" and "my old lady". But just the same, Kai's growing up too fast.
She just had her school Christmas program(which they called a "holiday" program but I won't go into that again) and she did great! I thought she might be scared singing in front of all those parents but she did it good. She did tell me beforehand that she was "a little nervous" about it so I didn't know whether or not she was going to freeze up there. I love it that she feels she can tell me things that are bothering her and then we can talk about it and try to allay her fears a bit.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Still very cold here, birds have gone through another huge batch of fruit/cereal/nut/peanut butter mix, and a whole bunch of seed and corn. Hungry little things!

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32105: Congrats AFD. That is awesome news. Gods blessings upon you that all goes well.

Asa

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32106: Thanks Ro and Asa. I've been feeling pretty good, a little tired, and my tummy lets me know when it's time to put something in it, but other than that it's going well. With my last one, I only had a little nausea for about a month or so and that was it. So glad because I've seen MUCH worse.

We had a whole yard full of birds yesterday eating seeds and things. Male and female cardinals, some sparrows, and two or three other varieties I'm not familiar with. They haven't been here today - either they don't care for the sprinkling of snow or they're headed to your house, Ro. ; )

It's still cold but it's so nice and pretty with the sun shining brightly off of the little bit of snow we have.

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32108: Congrats AFD - babies are the most wonderful things, aren't they?

Cold, snowy and more snowy here - about 4 inches - it is snowing about 2 inches per hour according to the news. . .

When I was a teenager, I would go up on our roof and hollar thru the kitchen stove vent with some HoHoHo's and my little sisters thought for sure it was Santa Claus! Good memories!
Hope you all are having a good day.

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32116: Right, Rev. Believe it or not its cold here in South Texas (about 30 degrees). What's going on? Snow last year on Christmas and now this. I LOVE it! I have been outside running around in it all day. It feels so Christmasy.

I have been beyond busy, I'll tell you and still so much to do. Hubby is going hunting tomorrow, Dad is leaving for a trip to Colorado Saturday and I have to get him ready, and Mom is having surgery on her hand on Wed. morning, and that's besides all the other things that need doing this time of year! You know what? I am just so very thankful that I am healthy enough and able to do what needs to be done that I won't complain.

AFD! How exciting about the new baby. Forgive me, but how many children do you currently have? Please keep us informed on how the pregnancy is going.

Hazel, I think the feminine form of Barney might be, "Barnadine", or maybe "Barnetta". Heehee

Well, think I'll turn in. Big day tomorrow. Stay warm and safe.

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32117: Boo sure hope Mons surgery goes well...[prayer]...Barnetta...yea Boo thats it...still like Opie....Gomer get to the waffle house early!..got to foot that bill..once again AFD tell us all!....a new porch member on the way...what a great Christmas gift to find out...well back to sanford and son ....SPOT

December 08, 2005 - Msg 32118: Thanks for all the congrats everyone. We have a just turned 5 year old daughter Evie who is excited to become a big sister in about 7 months. We'll be able to tell if it's a Barney or a Thelma Lou (or Bernadette or Bernice or Barnetta ; ) ) in about 6 or 7 weeks. I want to know but hubby does not, so we'll see about that...

I'll bet your house is a sight to see, spot. Hope you don't get too much of that freezing rain. Hey back to Miss Sherry.

Looking forward to that breakfast in the morning. Gonna need it to warm up since the low is to be in the single digits - forecast is for 2°. Glad the weatherman is saying 40's for next week - I don't know how long I'd last in this really cold stuff.

Night all - sleep tight! Prayers for all.

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32119: Good Friday morning porchters. Cold here, dang cold. Next person the mentions anything to me about global warming is gonna get kicked in the shin and poked in the eye!:)

Hope your Mom's sugery goes well too Boo. Too Boo? That has a nice ring to it.

AFD, Oh Holy Night is my favorite Christrmas Hymn too. One of my memories growing up was going to church alot because my Mom was the choir director, and at Christmas time would meet often to practice for a Christmas program. Anyway there was this feller in our church (in fact he reminded me a lot of Rafe Hollister, an old farmer) and he was going to sing Oh Holy Night as a solo. I still remember listning to him rehearse that song over and over and over. He had a wonderful voice.

Guess I'll go get some of that warm breakfast at Spots.

Asa

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32120: Congrats, AFD. Glad your headaches are better. Just so ya'll know, Ro is a great writer. Although you probably already knew that from her posts. She also has a story we're publishing called “Squirrels in My Backyard” complete with photos. Hey Pappa Bear, are you cold enough today? Our aquarium on our enclosed front porch had ice in it today. The goldfish looked like they were playing freeze tag. All you southerners be glad you are where it is warm. The temp. here this morning about 2°. Never had such scenes on TAGS. Only a few times did they don the jackets. Is there only the one Christmas episode?
Charlotte Tucker

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32121: Hi Charlotte, yes, they only did the one! Not sure the reason why. Maybe our man FLOYD can shed some light on it!
I think PAPPABEAR is hibernating! i saw it was 3 below in Lincoln, IL,burr!
Sterling, you have one great daughter there, and i can tell, she has one proud daddy too!
Last night i did a little shopping at the mall and saw a quite poignant moment... A mother took her son, who was wheelchair bound, up to Santa's Chair. Santa got up out of his big throne chair
and he knelt down next to the wheelchair and listened very intently. (I would guess that the boy was about 8 or 9.) Santa had his ear right next to the boy so he could hear every word! Then he gave the boy a big hug, turned around while hugging the boy for the photo shot, then gave the mom a big hug too! I immediately thought, that's just what Jesus did for all of US! He got down from his throne, listened to us intently, and then "hugged" us with his death and resurrection!
It was quite a touching scene, but i wondered if anyone else there saw what I saw! I sure hope and pray that they did! Sometimes we get like Opie and get hung up on all the shiney bells and balls, and miss the reality of it all! Merry Christmas to you and yours! I love you guys.
MDC

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32122: Thanks, MDC, for sharing that precious moment with us. That's one of those scenes where you wish for a camera, but it's good that you don't have it, because a picture wouldn't capture it, and besides, you have a picture in your heart that will never fade. Lovely, just lovely. Thank you.

I have a suggestion for something fun we can do, kinda like a quote-a-thon. Let's quote some famous Christmas lines, song ti-tles, whatever, only make them politically correct. I'll start off: Merry winter holiday, Bedford Falls! Happy joyful occasion, you old Savings and Loan! Did you hear that bell? Looks like another mythical celestial being just got his wings!
There - get the idea? This could be fun!

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32123: Just on the off chance you didn't know what I was quoting, that was Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life", after he comes to his senses. --Romeena

December 09, 2005 - Msg 32124: Wings sounds a tad to harsh Ro. How about "got his aviational lift apparatus."
