Pappa bear, I just read your Veteran's Day entry and it was very nice! Thanks for sharing with us all.
I just finished reading some of the archives, and I must say, Asa, you are awful naughty, trying to prank dear Romeena like that! Good thing she has that fur-kid to help protect her...and a fearsome one he is, too! (Is the Plum a he?)
It has gotten REAL cold here, ever since O'Malley left...it's been snowing even! I have my furnace dialed down to about 65 or so, and I don't know if I can make it through the whole winter like this! Extra blankets, warm sweaters and all that, but still...it is COLD, and it's only November! I may freeze to death, but I will have saved enough money for a proper burial!
Here's my quote: "I behaved like a proper Charley!"
May God grant every porchster a wonderful late fall, Mayberry type of day!

Saw in ep last night where Barney is learning sheriffing rule number one, and they do that preamble style bit. Guess that was for a "warm up" ha You can see Andy really cracking up.

Sad that there are such loosers that they would spend almost 4 hours of their live visiting a place that they are only interested in because they can cause trouble. Very sad. Perhaps they well find some "Mayberry" in their life someday.

Thank you, Floyd. I find such interlopin' to be annoying, but when it starts to rile TOM, I really get my dander up. TOM doesn't deserve or need to be upset like that. Thanks for fixing things. You're a prince, a real prince!
My expanded fish pond is almost a reality. The holes are dug, the liner is in and the water is in. It will get a few inches deeper when we finish, but is at about two feet right now. Dirt is bermed up around the perimeter, the liner is turned back a foot or so over the dirt and heavy stones are in place, holding the liner down. This rise will keep rainwater from draining into the pond. Tomorrow we cut the excess liner away, place more stones around the outside perimeter, and put bedding soil in between, so I can plant flowers around the edges. There is a huge slab of limestone that forms a bridge over the narrow part of the figure-eight shaped pond. The fountains - one is a little umbrella fountain, the other is a waterfall coming out of some boulders - will go in tomorrow. Then there's lighting - haven't got that all worked out yet, but we will. It's really going to be pretty when it's finished.
Mary Wiggins, The Plum is a little girl furkid. She thinks she's a big strong watch-furkid, though. Very big bark for such a little girl.

November 17, 2005 - Msg 31567:
Hey everybody, hope you are having a good evening.
PAPPA, as far as those who no longer post, we miss them but musn't dwell on why they no longer come to visit. There is really no way to know why some don't visit the porch anymore but I'm sure there are many different reasons. I think mostly folks just get too busy and you never know what happens to some. Sounds morbid but sometimes I wonder if some folks die and we never hear about it. Sad to think about. I think we should all talk to a relative or friend and give them this porch address and ask them to let our friends on the porch know if something (God forbid) ever happens to us....like SPOT's girlfriend did when he was in his accident. I know my sister would let you all know if something happened to me. Having said that, I want to say that I am very thankful for all of you and for Floyd and this porch.
ROMEENA, that fish pond sounds so pretty. Hope you will put a picture of it on your photo site.
MDC, good luck saving "Ol' Lady Crump's" reputation...I don't think she ever had that look in her eye. As far as "cheek sugar" tonight, I'm way too tired...heehee.
Hey, DIXIE, good to see you coming around again. We miss you.
Good to see you too, Mary Wiggins. Sorry you are freezing already. I can't even imagine snow already. Stay warm!
I wanted to tell ya'll something sweet that I forgot to share with you yesterday. When I was getting Erin's pictures made yesterday (my Baby Girl who is 4), I was trying to get her to smile more naturally while the photographer was taking the picutures so I said, "Sweetie, try to think about something that makes you happy" and the photographer asked her, "What makes you happy?" and she said without a pause, "Jesus". I was so surprised but joyful over her response because, although we take her to Sunday school, because she is so young we don't talk to her much about God and Jesus. It was such a sweet thing to hear a little child say, especially when she is my own.
Now, I should also tell you that the same little angel I am talking about also snuck next door in the mall and shoplifted a baseball cap from the sportswear store while we were waiting for the pictures! She walked up to me where I was sitting in the waiting area of the photo place and showed me the hat. When I asked her where it came from she said, "That hat place". I asked her to show me and she walked me next door to the sportswear store. The woman working there said she never even saw her. I took her aside and used that "teachable moment" to explain why we don't just take things we want and why we don't wander away from Mama in public places. I still can't believe how quickly she got out of my sight while I was talking to my sister. Scary.
Ok, I'm really signing off this time. See ya tomorrow!

Lets see pappa bear, I know Hilda Mae was in at least one other episode. She was the one who buttered Barney up like a Sunday biscuit cause he was feeling so low, but in the process she mussed up his hair real bad and started laughing. (one of the funnier clips in the whole series imho)
I do know of several folks who have quit posting because they feel we have strayed to far from the show. I keep telling them they need to come back and keep us on track, but maybe they feel awkward doing that, I don't know. I wish they would come back though. I sure do miss them.
MDC, You asked where TV Land was on the reruns. They had on Ellie runs for city council last night so it sounds like they are pretty close to what your local station is airing. Having them on dvd now sure makes it nice though. Season 4 goes on sale next Tuesday I believe.
Hope everyone has a great Friday. My family wants us to put up outdoor decorations this weekend, but I don't know if I want to this year. We had a fellow doing that last week in a near by city and he fell off his roof, landed on his head and died. Had one do that last year too. I ain't so old that I can't get on my roof, but I am begining to wonder if it is worth the risk any more. If I could bring my boom truck home from work and use it, It would be a piece of cake. Oh well.

Asa - I thought your head was harder than that! Just teasing - how could we live with out Asa?
I like the combination of talking about old and new things on the porch. I like to think the Andy Griffith show represents more than just tv -it is about values that we are hard pressed to find just about anywhere. I am not afraid to let my children watch Andy, the Three Stooges, Ma and Pa Kettle - I know that certain things will not be talked about and I will not be explaining improprieties of our society. As I told my boys the other day, I want them to gentleman not hoodlums or like some of the boys I see every day. I am proud to say that the teachers like my kids because they are respectful of authority figures. Those are things that TAGS represents to me. I am sorry that some of the oldies that used to hang around are upset with modern day talk of the porch. Maybe if they visited more they could bring more of an influence to the porch. That is my soapbox! Sorry if I offended anyone. . .

Our local ep last night was the introduction of Ellie in the drugstore, where right from the git go she is mad at Andy for being in the store.

And even in the ep where miss peggy has the gentleman visitor, she doesnt get to upset, it is Andy who does. So, if i can be a weekend phychologist (must be all the Bob Newhart shows)for a minute, I think we have all see the episodes so many times, that all that is in our minds, so there we go...Peggy wins! Hey Tom, that's another beautiful poem, keep 'em coming!
I was reading in Matthew with my little 8 year old tonight, and we were reading the part about a person being better off with a millstone hung around his neck and drowning than what he (or she) will get if they mess with one of God's little ones. After reading that, my little guy was real quiet, looking kind of nervous. I asked him what was wrong, thinking he was concerned about someone who may have wronged him, since he IS only 8. Well, he was worried about an event that happened when he was 4 and he hit the little girl next door. He got in big time trouble for that one, and apparently has never forgotten it! Poor little guy, I had to as-sure him that he is one of God's little ones, too!
Asa, I hope I am invited to come hang out in your driveway next week, too!

Don't you just love the part when Aunt Bethany recites the Pledge of Allegiance when she is supposed to say grace, and when her husband says, "You couldn't hear a dump truck driving through a nitroglycerine plant!"-or something like that. So many funny lines in that movie.
Went out and did some Christmas shopping tonight but still have quite a bit to do for the kids.
As far as staying on the subject of TAGS goes, I think we do well. If TAGS were the only subject to be talked about, we would run out of things to say,

since spot made such a wondeful suggestion that boo buys breakfast at waffle house, i thought i'd follow suit- let's have a party at asa's house on thanksgiving eve? right in his driveway and porch. what do you think. tom- thanks for the poem, remember we have all been family so long that we can spot posts that are not from each other. please never worry about those who pose as you or one of us for our styles have been around as well as our freindships for to long , we always ask floyd to check out suspicious posts that doesn't sound like us. then if it;'s someone else floyd puts a block on them as he did with your impersonator. there can only be one true loved tom on our porch and that's you, our freind. ky girl- it is easy to forget amidst our trails and troubles that every generation has their set and most of the time there not much different than the bible folks abraham, job, moses ruth etc. mary wiggins- we'll save you something to eat when you get up, you get some rest. up till 11pm- did you do any adventure sleeping? mdc- company coming to town reminded me of uncle ollie. also of harry truman - it was customery when a chief justice retire from supreme court and visited the capitol the president showed them around. when truman heard sam rayburn was coming, he told his cabinet he was leaving town and for them to call him when sam went home. truman said(watered down version) i don't like that so qnd so and he doesn't like me therefore i will not put on airs for him. possum- after last nights disgrace in the u.s.house we may all be poor horatio. my believe is we must have an exit strategy within one year or otherwise we'll get like vietnam with the same result. congress should pass a law that when helping a country reclaim their freedom to choose a government that if they haven't gotten it under control by 3 years- they probably won't. imploding. andy; on picnic ellie for council= everyone staring at opie eating all the sandwich's. opie ; why is everyone looking at me? andy- boy, it's a good thing your not a beaver, why there would be nary a tree left in these parts. have a great weekend. pappa bear

Thanks, ky girl, I enjoyed the card. Pappa bear, well said as always - what you said to TOM and your comments about the war as well. I think we needed to be there, we had to do something, but it's time to let them run their country now. Maybe it's not that simple, though. I know there is much we don't know about what is involved over there. As for the Native Americans, you are right on. We owe them, big time. The Navajo code-talkers during WWII, and fighting men like Ira Hayes - true heroes.
We're still working in the yard - ponds almost finished, just some cosmetic work to be done, and then I'll get some pictures and post them. Somebody asked for that photo site address - Here it is: Romeena.myphotoalbum.com.
Well, I must get back to work. My son came yesterday and put up my Christmas lights, so now he won't have to do it on Thanksgiving, it's all done! I just need to put out the deer and the bush and ground lights. He got all the roof stuff done. What would I do without that boy?
Asa, can I come to your driveway caroling party? The Plum would like to come also. She's not much of a caroler, but she likes to listen. She can wear her little frilly Christmas collar.
Everyone have a great Mayberry weekend. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

My true love and I
Shall never part
For my little blue jar
Remains in my heart.

Oh my gosh, that's hilarious! Whoever wrote that Vicks verse, good job! That verse is the best yet....and I share your sentiments. At least we know from the last stanza that the author is a girl. How about...Romeena?!
You are blessed to have those roof lights up, Ro. My sister is on her way over to help me put up the lights on my parent's house. I'm not going to turn them on yet, just want to get them done a little at a time starting with the roof...hope I don't fall on my head...maybe I'll make my sister do it, she's a little squirt with a big head.....hope she reads this.
I bought my mom one of those little 2 foot fiber optic trees to put in her room yesterday. She spends most of her time sitting in the recliner in her room (just feels secure there) so I thought she would enjoy having the tree to look at. I put on some extra colored lights and I must say it looks FAB and she loves it. I wanted her to have a tree in her room when they started showing the Christmas movies on TV. I was just remembering how depressed and hopeless she was at this time last year. She is much better now and seems to be looking forward to the holidays. I want to say thank you to all of you for your prayers for my family. Wish you could see first-hand how much they have improved.
KY GIRL, I never mind buying cyber-breakfast. Hope you all enjoyed it.
I just finished making some sweet potatoes for the church Thanksgiving supper tomorrow. I will cook the turkey tomorrow and the pies. I wanted to share my sweet potatoe recipe with ya'll because its a new one and I think its really good. I use canned sweet potatoes but fresh would be even better, I'm sure. I drain the sweet potatoes and cut them into smaller chunks and put them in a baking dish, then I mix in a can of apple pie filling. I melt about a stick of butter and add 1 to 2 cups of brown sugar (depending on how sweet you like it) to it and spread over potatoes and apples, then I give it a sprinkling of cinnamon and bake at 350 for quite a while, at least an hour to form a syrup. I think I actually cooked mine for 2 hours. Try it, you'll like it! Mmmmmmm...Mmmmmmmmm
OK, break time is over. I hear kid fight in the living room.

i love the vicks ode, it must be springtime cause there's vicks in the air, ha. romeena and ky girl= thanks for the kind words and i agree that it's not simple to start a new government but my personal opinion only is that take vietnam, how many years were we there supposedly helping south vietnam establish there own government? will 10 or 12 years make that much difference in thesurvival of iraq? i say by dec 2006 if they can't do it they never will. most historians prefer to look at the big events and familiar names they cover, when it's the average man or woman that has got things done. for supper lets have a pre- thanksgiving meal at my place? this way we can warm up our taste buds, all in flavor? have a great evening and prayers for our porchsters whose out for the weekend, those traveling over the holidays, those in the military overseas away from their families. often we forget the military duty in places like korea where family can't go. and prayers that our congress grows up soon and rational american heads prevail. i wonder if we didn't have political parties but have people run for the job instead of the party who can control the jobs? just a thought. my quote: barny; maybe he went on vacation- you know down to florida at one of those alligator farms. pappa bear

Pappa bear, it's hard for me to describe why I don't post much here anymore. (I don't know if you were talking about me or not when you were asking about the missing porchsters). I guess I just don't feel that comfortable here anymore. I won't go into my reasons other than to say the porch has changed from the way it was when I first joined (back in '01). I have no wish to offend anyone, or start a moulage. But I do believe that the majority of you who post here like it the way it is now, and that is really what counts. I do try to check in every now and again, it's just not my "first" place to visit when I go on-line anymore.

#31607, I must say, I admire your att-itude and non-confrontational approach. It's true, the porch has changed somewhat, not necessarily better or worse, just different. It has evolved, as most things do. Part of the change, I think, is due to the absence of some of the old guard, though I'm not sure which came first - their absence or the changes. I guess it doesn't matter, but I do wish the old-timers would return, at least now and then. You all are missed.
I wish I could take credit for the Vicks poetry, but I can't. It's true, I do love to write, but I'm not responsible in this case.
Well, I'm a pooped pup. Worked in the yard too long, knee is aching, in fact the whole lower leg aches, and I think I'm going to bed. The Plum agrees completely, and in fact, is already there. Have a lovely Sabbath, everyone. Tomorrow I'll be putting a few little fish in my pond. Please wish them well. They'll be the little 12-cent comet goldfish, commonly used as "feeder" fish, so even if they don't survive, at least they'll have had a chance. Beats being fed to bigger fish!
