August 08, 2005 - Msg 29872: Oh, mercy, folks! It's so good to be back in the good old USA. I'm here at my own keyboard, in a cool room about twice as big as the hot, dingy little room they called the "internet cafe" in Mongolia. Ten dim terminals, on little wooden tables in front of plastic chairs, sticky keyboards, very poor light, BUT - I was able to get on the porch from there! That in itself, considering where we were, was remarkable. Pretty cheap, too. I was on for about ten minutes, cost me the equivalent of 33 cents, to my surprise. I expected much more. People were lined up to get to the terminals, so I hurried through, but was amazed that I was even able to access the porch.

I've got a lot of unpacking and unwinding to do, and have to work tomorrow night, so don't know when I'll get started on the journal, but will do it. I'm considering a blog, if I can figure out how to set it up, and I think I can. A little poking around to be done there, obviously.

Please pray for my friend Kathy, the wife of my landscaper friend Joe, who has done the major makeover in my yard. Without him, the pretty things I see from my window would not exist. Kathy had a stroke last week, is improving, but not yet out of the woods. Vision still impaired, but has most of her mobility. Thanks, friends.

August 10, 2005 - Msg 29911: Wow, Rev Jr., you are some kinda good. That's exactly what DART stands for - Dallas Area Rapid Transit. That thing is as handy as a pocket on a shirt, too. There's a station just a few minutes from my house, with ample parking available. I'm not about to take my pet car into Dallas anymore and pay $12 for a parking space that's not as big as my hanky, and come out to find dings on my car and highly questionable-looking people standing around everywhere. I just hop on a train for $2.50 - good for the entire day on any train - and in about ten minutes I'm in downtown Dallas. No muss, no fuss. Walk two blocks to the courthouse for jury duty, or catch one of the very convenient buses to go elsewhere in the downtown area. All done - hop on another train and ride back to my car. Too easy, and safe. The trains are clean, not crowded, on time, and guarded. Oh, and considering where you live, Rev Jr, it's probably a good thing you don't have rapid transit.

I saw the orthopod today about my knee - he thinks I may have a torn meniscus, wants an MRI to confirm, and then that will mean scope surgery, an outpatient procedure with a week or so of recovery time. Not too bad.

My little hummingbird friend has been coming around regularly, and has discovered that he can see me through the window. He hovers just outside my picture window, and watches me as I'm watching him. I'm going to try to get a picture of that. I have some of him at the feeder, but this hovering at the window bit is a new trick, and I'd love to have some pictures. Kinda hard through a window, it glares sometimes, but I'm going to try.

Time to get ready for school. . .fresh pencils, fresh glue, same headaches, same director of special ed. :(

homemaker

August 11, 2005 - Msg 29918: homemaker, you sound just like my DIL about three years ago. She is a master's-prepared diagnostician for special ed, worked in a rural district that served three school systems. Prior to that, she had taught special ed classes - she signs, all the right stuff. Unfortunately, she got so fed up with the director and some of the higher-ups that she had to work with, that she resigned, opened a Curves salon and has never looked back. She has built the client base to the point that people are now offering her a lot of money to buy her business, and she's considering selling it and moving on to something else, but it won't be in education. My daughter, who taught high school honors English, also left education, and is now working for a hospice company, as liaison between the hospice and the hospital, doctors, patients and families. Community PR, all of that. She loves it, and would never return to teaching unless she just had to. It's a shame, because it's the kids who lose in the long run. I don't know who can fix the system, or how, but it probably should begin at the top. Some fat cats need to be removed, but since many of them got where they are by favored appointment, it's going to be difficult. OK, that's my soapbox for today.

I have a cold, of all things. Feel just miserable. I know exactly where I got it, too, because the incubation time is just right. I was seated near a man on our return flight last Friday, who was dubbed "Mr. Snotthroat" by one of the physicians who was part of our group. (He's such a silver-tongued devil, that doctor.):>) I tried to hold my breath whenever I could, as the man sneezed, coughed, honked and generally managed to spray his germs over a ten-foot radius for the 12 hours or so that we were in the air. I'd love to be able to track everyone who was on that flight. I'll bet that whole section of the plane is sick. Dumb doofus. He should have requested a seat back in the corner, and stayed in it, with a bag over his head!! Instead he wandered the aisles, sharing the wealth with everyone.

On a happier note, my yard is full of all sorts of birds, snarfing up the seed I put out last night, two squirrels are battling over possession of the hanging feeder and scattering yet more seed for the birds on the ground, and my little hummer friend has already come in and hovered at the window to say good morning. The red-headed flicker will be along in about an hour, and at least two more squirrels will soon join the fray. I see them hanging around on the back fence. A big grackle is trying his best to perch atop the water column that shoots up about six inches out of a boulder by the pond. He tries it every morning, hasn't figured it out yet. Or maybe he's just getting a really good bath. Anyway, he's funny to watch. Thank you, Lord, for this window!

Have a great day, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

August 11, 2005 - Msg 29927: Hey, possum! Sorry about the bifocals making you feel queasy. I wore them for a while, had the same problem. I wore them for a short time, never did really get used to them, but then they were on tbe table as much as they were on my nose! My parents gave both me and my husband bifocals for our birthdays one year, and neither of us could wear them. We went back to our old drug-store reading glasses in a couple of months. Problem was, neither of us really needed much distance correction, so when we weren't using the near-vision correction part, the bifocals were just a nuisance. My husband used the cheap reading glasses forever, I eventually went to a mono-vision contact, which I absolutely LOVE! If you don't need much distance correction, you might try that.

Need to get ready for bed - the big corporation wide breakfast is in the morning and then I am busy, busy, busy!

Big rebellion coming Saturday - kin from S. Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Colorado and New Hampshire all coming in - It will big BIG!

August 11, 2005 - Msg 29930: Hey Romeena & MDC- I'm a bit better now,but still no picnic wearing these bifocals. Wish I could just go over to Weaver's and get a pair of cheap reading glasses, but unfortunately,I do need glasses for distance. Used to wear contacts, then switched to glasses for nearsightedness. Now,the old age factor decided to kick in and so it's bifocals. Guess I'll have to tough it out. MDC,I hope it'll only take me a week to adjust. Thanks y'all.
Update on Laci- she's getting a brace tomorrow for her left foot. Has weak muscles due to being a preemie. She walks now holding on to things and the therapist who has been working with her says that once she gets that support for her foot, she'll most likely take off running! I know many of y'all have prayed for her and I'm happy to report that she is doing very well since her heart surgery last year-going to turn 2 in a few weeks!
Well, guess it's time to hit the old ironing board.Y'all have a good night.

August 11, 2005 - Msg 29931: Hey to the porch...hope everybody is doing just fine! I'm stuck here in the west side of the porch (san jose)..but it's a nice place!

Got the call today that my dad went home. It's been a long haul with this terrible disease, and I'm glad he's at rest now. I appreciate all the prayers...and just ask for a few more as we head to Ohio tomorrow and take care of things. He of course had to wait till I was 2000 miles away...he always was stubborn! :-)

Ya'll be good...I'm sure I'll be away for a few days.

August 11, 2005 - Msg 29933: My heart breaks for you, Goober. I know, as do many others on the porch, just what you're facing now. Your grief is mitigated a little by the fact that your dad is no longer in pain, but still you miss him a lot. Even though you weren't with him on a daily basis, just knowing he was on the planet was something to hold to. Now begins the tedium of the legalities, the sorting-out, the "business" of settling things after a death. God will see you through, friend, and we will be praying for you and your family. August 12, 2005 - Msg 29935: Sorry to hear about your loss Goob. I remember losing my mom and dad far to well.

As to bifocal, I remember my first pair of varifocals (progressing gradually from distance to reading). I was sick for a week and kept tripping overthings. They were a bigger pair. I just changed prescriptions this week and also switched to MUCH smaller frames. I am have some challanges adjusting, but not like last time. You should get used to them in a few days.

August 12, 2005 - Msg 29937: May God Bless and Keep you and your family during this time. I can understand how you feel and what you are facing since I lost my mother to through very similar circumstances in 2002. Please know and trust in God for He will see you through this and sustain you afterwards. I will keep you in my daily thoughts and prayers. I know you have many friends here that will be praying also. I hope that I am not intruding here because this is my first time to post although I have been visiting and reading for over a year now. I feel like I know each one of you and I truly miss you when I don't get to come by and rock for a while. Even though I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago I still found a computer so I could come see my friends(I hope you don't mind me calling you that even though we haven't really met yet). I keep all your prayer request in my daily prayers. It just makes my day to read Romeena's view from her window or Mayor Pappa Bear's great stories and observations. And I think I have put on an extra 20 lbs. from Spot's cooking! I love knowing that there is a spot that I can come to be with people who loves TAGS as much as I do and it is a place that I can visit with my 2 boys(Ages 11 months and 6 years). Thank You for letting me ramble and Thank You for letting me sit and rock on your porch.

I got a super picture of my little hummingbird - will be adding it to the pictures on my photo site. I'll put a few photos from Mongolia on there, too. Will let you know when they're there.

Gotta run some errands, then I'm coming home and snuggle into my big chair and try to get rid of this miserable cold. I wouldn't leave the house if I didn't have to, but one errand won't wait.

Goober, my sympathies to you also. Know it is rough it has been on many here. I have not yet heard from Mavis.
Well, it's that time of year here where tortilla chips get soggy about 15 minutes after you open the bag. Reminds me of the day when bags used to have wax on them to help prevent moisture getting in. Sure do wish this cold would go away. The only thing I hate worse than having a cold is having a summer cold! Reckon if I go over to the drugstore, maybe Miss Ellie would have some pills that would help? Guess it won't hurt to try.

Marathon of one of my favorite shows on TV Land this week. I always did enjoy "Night Court". Dan Fielding was such a total sleaze, but then would surprise you with some sterling quality or other. Harry was wise and witty, and never seemed to lose his sense of perspective. A good show.

Yippee! A pair! I hope they're nesting around here somewhere, maybe raising some young'uns. The male is so pretty with his red crest and all. You can see some pictures of him at romeena.myphotoalbum.com. Now that I've seen the female too, guess I'll start buying mealworms again and including a few in the seeds I put in the feeder. August 15, 2005 - Msg 29974: Good evening, everyone. I wish you could all be sitting on my end of the porch right now. A summer storm just passed over, and the scene outside my window is simply glorious. Everything is washed clean, flowers are brilliant in their colors, and the grass and foliage is emerald green. The light is that peculiar golden light that comes after a shower, stays only for a few moments, but just lifts your spirits to the skies when it does appear. I rather imagine that the light in Heaven is going to be like that. The backdrop for the whole backyard scene is a towering bank of thunderclouds beyond the tree line, and their tops are touched by the sun's rays, giving them unbelievable hues of rosy gold. So beautiful!

August 16, 2005 - Msg 29976: Good Morning to everyone on the porch!
We too had one of those Blessings from God of the much needed summer rains last night. It is truly overwhelming to see God's creations after He has given it a good bath...very similar to seeing your own child after giving them a bath at the end of a long Summer day of playing outside. I would like to request the prayers of the porch for a dear friend and sister in my church. Her name is Shannon and her brother was a part of the 3rd Squadron, 278 Regimental Combat Team of the Tennessee Army National Guard who over the weekend had 3 members killed by hostile fire in Iraq(Possibly you saw the story on the news). Thankfully and praise the Lord Shannon's Brother was not killed however both his legs are broken, both his ankles are broken, he has an broken arm and he has suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 60% of his body. His name is Kevin and he is being airlifted to Germany for emergency surgery and will be transferred to San Antonio, TX for complete recovery. Please pray for his healing and for Shannon and her family as they travel to be with him. Freedom is not free it comes with a very high cost let's remember those who have paid the price and those who are daily ready to pay as well. Support our troops with prayers and the cards and letters and any other type of support we can give. Also remember the price that was paid for our eternal freedom on a foreign hill called Calvary over 2000 years ago. I will get off my little soapbox now I really have not been here long enough to have the right to get on it. But please know that this comes from my heart and I Thank You for the opportunity and your prayers.

To all those who have given their all, I appreciate it and Good Night!
