June 15, 2005 - Msg 29187: Mornin Porchsters- Spot- I was here, you just missed me cuz I was around the corner drinking water from the garden hose. Remember doing that? My kids wouldn't dream of it. Those hot dogs sound great. How does everybody here like their dog? I generally prefer mustard, chili, onions, some cole slaw and a touch of tabasco. Gonna be a scorcher today on this end of the porch. Possum- stay under your rock...it's a lot cooler there.
Rev.Jr.
P.S. a little Rev. Marvin's instead of mustard on that dog is pretty good too.

June 15, 2005 - Msg 29188: How about that! I go for a drink of water, come right back, and have to sweep! Hadn't done that in months.

June 15, 2005 - Msg 29189: Porch sure looks nice and clean. Good job Rev Jr.
When i was a youngster, i would tote my mower around the neighborhood and mow lawns. I used to quench my thirst right from the nearest hose! Always had that "vinyl" taste, but it sure hit the spot! These days it's a bottle of Arrowhead! haha
Have a good safe cool day.

Prayers continue for PAPPA bear. Been about a month now since he's posted. Sure hope he is ok
with those kidneys of his! He hasn't been to the NorthFork McCain porch lately either on the Rifleman site.
Here's a good one for ya all- I hired an Elvis impersonator to show up at my wife's workplace on Friday to hand her a dozen red roses for our 29th Anniversay! He will sing a few songs to her also!
She's a big fan so it should be good. I have a fellow worker there videotaping it.
What do you think ladies. Is it worth a few brownie points?
well, ya all ave a good day , careful, rockin forward.

June 15, 2005 - Msg 29192: MDC - I think that is great. . .esp. if he sings "Love Me Tender" in "My Blue Suede Shoes" - :)

Well my youngin is doing better - eating the fire out of chicken noodle soup. At least he is swallowing which he refused to do last night when we got home from the hospital. We threatened to take him back to the hospital which he did not want to do and then he got down to taking his meds and drinking. Bought him some fountain AW Root Beer from the local AW of course and that did the trick.

talk to you all later -
I got brownies in the oven. . .

Hope Quiet Sam took it easy today-maybe he's gonna do his planting tonight when it's a bit cooler!
Glad your son is coming along ok,homemaker. You take care and watch out for those tornados! Been through hurricanes (Hugo!!) but never a tornado and the thought of one of those things headed my way scares the fur right off of my lil' possum body!
Happy Anniversary to you & your wife,MDC! I had an Elvis impersonator sing to me once-I guarantee your wife will never forget it!

Hope the Elvis deal goes well tomorrow. I was like a kid last night wanting to say something, but having to bite my lip.
Maybe if we fire up the ole brown truck and wash 'er, pappa bear may show up to drive it this Sunday in Michigan!
I watched Bailey's Bad Boy on dvd last night and realized that he uses the same T-Bird as Elizabeth C AND the one that Andy's friend in the "Clubmen" uses! They made good use of it!
Here's a good quote from BBB:

June 16, 2005 - Msg 29198: Afternoon Porchsters- I reckon we're gonna need a bunch of those old timey fans for this end of the porch. You know the kind I'm talkin' about? They're basically a very heavy piece of paper attached to a stick. They used to hand 'em out at church in the old days. Usually they had an advertisement for a funeral home on them. Irishter- my Jethro Bodine sipherin' ain't too good. How hot is that in South Carolina degrees? teehee. MDC- I'll bet I've a hundred people in the last 2 days say "it ain't so much the heat, it's the humidity." The way I see it...hot is hot. Sure hope Quite Sam is staying OUT of those fields right now. Stay under that rock as long as possible, Possum. And MDC, good luck with the Elvis thing. Thank ya...thank ya very much. Good to see ya CT, afd, hm, neighborLMN, spot, Ro and any others I may have missed (didn't mean to if I did). Prayers for PB.

June 16, 2005 - Msg 29199: Howdy, friends. Still out here in lovely Florida, just enjoyin' the heck out of the place! Every day we have alternating periods of rain and sun - sure makes it nice. No mud in Florida, of course, the whole state is one big sand spit, so the rain just drains right off. I've driven the Seadoo, paddled around in the pool, slept in a lounge chair, and watched TAGS in the a/c. I ordered both seasons for my son and his wife, hope they arrive before I leave.
The Plum sure looks different with her puppy-style haircut. I'll try to post a couple of pictures on my picture website when I get home.
Seriously worried about PappaBear. Does anyone know how to contact Mayberry Girl? It's been a long time since she visited the porch, but if there was some way to reach her, she would know about him, of course. Does anyone know PB's non-TAGS name? Like MDC, I'm beginning to have a bad feeling about all this.
Can we all make a little pinky-pact, that we all tell our families to notify the porch if anything happens to one of us? Naturally, none of us thinks that's going to be necessary, but we never know. God's timing is not always the same as ours. Anyway, my family knows to do that for me. Think about it, OK?

June 17, 2005 - Msg 29210: Ok,going with Pappa Bear's hometown (thank you AFD) I did an online search of the local newspaper in Lincoln Illinois. I searched the obits from May 21st to today. No listing of a Frank Strohkirch, which I say is good news. However, it wouldn't pull up these dates: May 22,May 29& 30,June 5,and June 12th. I tried several times, but got an error message. So.. unless something happened on these dates,my feeling is that Pappa Bear hasn't passed away.If anyone else wants to try these dates the paper is Lincoln Courier.com and when the page comes up,click on "search" in the column on the left. You'll then type in the date, that day's edition will come up,scroll down until you see obituaries on the bottom. If we can get these dates cleared, then I think it would be safe to say that he hasn't passed on.
I'm so glad I didn't see the name Frank Strohkirch, but I'm not satisfied yet. I did my best y'all. Hope we get an answer soon.

Papa bear! So good to hear from our fine mayor! I hope the health problems will subside and that you get the parts to your puter soon! We all have been so worried.

I have been so busy, Opie getting out of school, starting up the summer business, and the regular smattering of birthdays, holidays, father's and mother's day, etc.! Sorry I have been away so long!

We got our new printer and are still working all the bugs out, and of course, my evenings have been consumed by my Pistons! Tonight they face elimination by San Antonio, so I am hoping for a great game and another chance to play on Thursday. If Detroit doesn't win, I would have to say San Antonio would be my next pick for the NBA championship, however. (But I still really, really want Detroit to win;)!

Hey Mr. Darlin's Cuz, send your wife just a little bit further east and have her come visit us in Michigan! It's been real pretty here lately! Things are nice and green and all the flowers are brightening up the landscapes with all their beautiful colors!

We have a duck on a nest at the foot of my driveway! What a crazy place to build a home. All the cars drive by...and every time I back out of the drive I go way yonder out of my way to avoid her! She is sitting on ten eggs, and I am hoping some of them will hatch and make a go of it. I bought her some food and have been "watering" her most every day!

Well, that's the latest from the northern end of the porch!

Y'all have a great Mayberry Day!

June 22, 2005 - Msg 29266: Hey, Spot. Here's the story I got. This "leaning pole" thing has been going on for well over a year. Every time we call, they come out and tighten up the sagging wires, which only pulls the pole over further. So, the first man on Monday afternoon looked at the pole, asked me how long it had been that way, I said over a year, and he wants to know why I was just now calling! This as he's standing smack in the middle of my newly-planted Citronella bush. I told him he was the fourth person to come out, and would he mind stepping out of my plants. He did, apologized, I accepted, and he said he would now send a report to someone (some initials), who would in turn come out and confirm, and they would then report to some more initials, who would also come out to confirm. If everybody agrees, then the pole will be replaced. The second man came yesterday, and this morning somebody walked through the yard and out again, so I presume he's the third investigator. They said I can expect the pole to be replaced within two weeks if everyone approves, so I'll be interested to see what happens next. Meantime, my lines are exactly four feet from the ground, and that pole is gonna fall on my roses, and then they're going to see what a Romeena looks like when she's not smiling. I'm quite sure your company is a bit more efficient, and I wish you'd come down here and give them some lessons. I told them over a year ago that the pole would have to be replaced, but who listens to an old widder-woman anyway?

OK, that's my whine for the day. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

June 22, 2005 - Msg 29267: Incidentally, that miserable pole is rotted off at the base, the only thing holding it upright is the wires!! --Romeena

June 22, 2005 - Msg 29269:
KY girl, yes everyone has central air here, however, growing up in the 50's 60's, almost all people had was swamp coolers, if anything, and most of them didnt work too good. What we used to do was to basically sleep in our skivvies on the backyard grass. We would soak sheets in cold water, ring them out, wrap ourselves up in them, and do our best to "air dry" trying to go to sleep. That is the truth! I remember that distinctly as a boy, me and my brothers on the grass in wet sheets! It kinda worked, made ya feel cool, especially if there was a slight breeze! Now THAT's adventure sleepin'. Sometimes the cooler's drain would plug up, or the pads would get sour, and the house would smell like dead fish! Ah, the early days in Phoenix! But we also had open canals to swim in, used mainly for irrigation. I had this one friend whose folks got central air about 1959 as it was being introduced to homes. Needless to say, the "sleepover" was quickly born!
But, I will say this, those experiences made for good family bonding in those days. The worst part of the year was in August when we get rain, and a swamp cooler does no good, cuz the air is already saturated with water, so we would just sit and sweat like in a sauna! Of course, Phoenix was founded around 1850, so I guess those folks were JUST PLAIN STUPID! haha (I guess that's it for today's history lesson--Dix gets an A+)

June 22, 2005 - Msg 29276: Hazel, I think you're right. Maybe the man who was wandering in my back yard this morning is the official verification-er.
Spot, it's sort of a mishmash here. My power is delivered and billed by Reliant Energy, using TXU lines and (I thought) TXU poles. However, they tell me that my particular power pole belongs to Verizon (the telephone people) and they are technically responsible for replacing it. The TXU man did say that if Verizon won't, then they will and will bill Verizon for it. I pretty much told them I didn't care if the pole belongs to the phone company, the power company, NASA or the Vatican, I just want it replaced and I don't care who does it, as long as it's done. Bless their hearts.

The picture of me and the Plum on the Seadoo was taken on the private lake behind my son's home in Florida. Like most Florida lakes, it's round as a pancake, and is about 3/4 mile in diameter. Lots of room for Seadoos and water fun. Yes, she just sits there and rides with me, wearing her little life jacket. That particular Seadoo would do about 45 tops, but the new one, which we rode last week, will do up to 80. I got it to 60 mph, and that was fast enough for me.

I remember pre-a/c sleeping, too. I would sleep with my head at the foot of my bed, because that's where the window was. Daddy would leave a sprinkler running slowly outside our windows at night, convinced it helped to cool the air. All windows and doors were wide open, but we were safe, because the screen door was latched! Ha! Remember those days? (Yes, I often drank from the garden hose back then, and still do.)

Asa- good to see you, did all your snow melt yet??
KY girl- I forgot about that. Yes people here would do the window sheets and fans too.
Ar'nt dads imaginative! When we traveled pre-ac from AZ to Cal for vacation, my dad would put dry ice in small trays on the dashboard with those little triagular side windows pushed all the way out to "catch" the air and circulate it over the dry ice. It kinda helped believe it or not. We would also suck on regular ice cubes all the way over for the 7 hour trip! (Lots of pit stops!)

June 24, 2005 - Msg 29300: WE sure need our porch swept.

June 24, 2005 - Msg 29301: Hey, Slim. I don't know what it was called where you're from, but in Texas we called that game "Red Rover". As in "Red Rover, Red Rover, let Sally come over." Then you'd run and try to break through the line. If you broke through, you got to go back to your side. If not, you stayed and joined the line you just tried to break through. We had a lot of fun with that game. Then some years back, some kid got their wrist broken when a bigger kid hit the line, and it was pretty much outlawed. Funny thing - I know kids who broke bones falling out of trees, too. Wonder if someday the powers that be will decide to cut down all the trees?

No action on the power pole today. Cable and phone lines now at about three feet, power line at about five and a half feet. I'm taking pictures, will start emailing them to selected people in the city, unless something happens very soon. The meter reader walked through the yard today, nearly knocked his hat off on the power line. He did a bit of a double take, obviously surprised by what he saw, but doubt he has enough clout to get anything done. Since I have no pets or children to be in danger out there, I'm just watching, but will get tired of the game soon. Then it begins.

One thing is for sure. It will be remedied before I leave the country for Mongolia at the end of July. I'm not leaving a hazard like that existing in my yard while I'm gone.

Well, off to the ironing board. I need a good night's sleep, I think, and the Plum is already in there on my pillow, snoozing. Have a great weekend, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
