February 10, 2005 - Msg 27034: I forgot to tell you all, that about 6 miles from my house, the Extreme Home Makeover show is re-doing a home this week!!! Or should I say they demolished the old 50 year old house and are building a new 5000 square foot home for the family with 6 kids. It is totally amazing. the newspaper has been showing photos of it everyday.
I'm going to see it tomorrow. There are one thousand volunteers working 24/7. They had the whole thing framed, plumbed and elctrically done in ONE day! What an awesome deal. One of the six kids has cancer, and all she asked was for the show to spruce up the hospital wing where she stays a lot. Well, they did that with the family this week, but they have no clue that they are also getting a new home!
Be sure to watch on MARCH 13, and you'll also get an idea of what my end of the porch is like.

I was going to say, for the newcomers, I live just outside of Phoenix, near Gilbert, AZ where the show is being taped.
MDC

February 10, 2005 - Msg 27036: That's cool, MDC! Are you going to be one of the people in the crowd when they unveil the new home to the owners? I've noticed there is usually a gigantic crowd of people from the community when they do that.

I also have to agree with something you said in another post about all those programs dividing the races, not bringing them together as equals.

Mrs. Wiley, I also learned first-hand about reverse discrimination when I worked in the payroll dept for my wife's tribe. They have this little rule called "Native American Preference" which stipulates that if you work for them(it doesn't matter how long) and are non-indian, and an Indian comes along and wants your job(regardless if they are qualified or not), they get it and you get booted. That's exactly how it happened to me. The payroll manager(who is also white) was pretty upset about this, because I was a pretty good worker, and she even quit not too long after I was let go. I don't know if the two things were connected, but I do know from my wife(who also worked in that dept)that she was pretty mad that they let me go and tried, in vain, to keep me in the job. I appreciated that.
So, like others have said, it works both ways. Whites don't hold a monopoly on discrimination.

February 13, 2005 - Msg 27066: Howdy, all. If nobody minds, I'll use an empty rocker to prop my feet up. I went to see the Gaither family concert last night with friends, and on my way back to our seats with popcorn, I missed a step (too dark to see it) and dropped about two feet to the concrete below, landing on both knees. I'd probably have broken my wrists trying to catch myself, but I was too concerned about protecting the two boxes of popcorn I was carrying, so my knees took it all. The right one is okay, the left one is pretttty sore! It doesn't want to bend today, though it bent fine right after the fall. I don't think anything's broken, just bruised and really sore. Anybody my age needs to be more careful, I guess. Oh, well.

So, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. I sure do miss my sweetie. We would have had a good dinner somewhere, and then probably just come home and spent a nice evening together. After 38 years, we didn't have to do anything fancy, we just enjoyed each other's company. Again, oh well....

Well, today is the preview sale day for Pat's art show. I would really appreciate your opinions of his work, and how we compete with the other artists price and quality wise. I am not able to do links, but I can give you the address: www.natureworks.org Once you go there, there is a link to the online preview sale and if you click that and look for Pat McMa nus (apparently Pat's name activated the sensor!), you will see three examples of Pat's work. He is just finishing a tree sparrow that is so pretty, and he is working on a moose painting, and just finished a wolf and a female cardinal among other things. Unfortunately I can't show you examples of those because they haven't been to the photographer yet for transparencies.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

I hope everyone is having a great day!

Romeena, I hope you are feeling better.Did you stay for the show? Sounds pretty painful to try and enjoy a show after that.

I gotta run, so much to do, so little time! I will try to check back later to see if anyone had a chance to check out Pat's work.

Have a great day!

February 14, 2005 - Msg 27069: Mary Wiggins, I am no art connessieur(I don't even know if I spelled that right) but I think Pat's paintings stack up very well against the compet-ition. While I would never be able to afford them, the prices look about right to me based on other art I have seen, on the website and elsewhere.
I think the deer is Fantastic, btw! I'm sure his other animal paintings look just as great.

February 14, 2005 - Msg 27071: Mary Wiggins, thanks for the link. "Meadow's Edge" just stole my heart. Will it be available in a print like the others I got? Wish I could afford an original, but I can't, so those prints are the next best thing. People who see them think they're originals, that process is so neat. I forgot the name of it, but it sure does make a pretty print.

The old knee is still very, very sore, but I'm going to Ace-wrap it and go on to work tonight. I'm beginning to wonder if I chipped something, but I guess I'll know before long, if it doesn't get better. You'd think anyone my age would be more careful, but oh no! I came skipping down that stairway like a kid, and just flat-out didn't see the next steps. Two of them. Just went right over them and down to the concrete below. Some light or a handrail would have been helpful, but neither was there, so off I went. Oh, well. Gives me something to talk about. (heehee)

February 15, 2005 - Msg 27088: Hello friends. Hope you are well. I dropped in to deliver a request for prayer, please. On Saturday a little two yr old in our neighborhood turned up missing and we searched for an hour only to find she had fallen into an old septic tank and drowned. EMS worked on her and she had a heartbeat but after being in the water for so long she is just on life support and the family is supposed to make the decision to remove life support today. Please pray for them. I have been a nurse for over 20 years and seen alot but this was so very disturbing. I am just so concerned for the mother of the child. February 16, 2005 - Msg 27105: Prayers for those in need, Ro and her knees, Mrs. Wiley, the family that Boo mentioned (and Boo's family too), as well as spot's continued recovery.

Happy Birthday Mayor! We lined up your daughter to sing "Happy Birthday" for ya. ; ) You're pretty close to my dad's age. My dad turns 60 in June, my mom turned 55 in January, and they will celebrate their 40th anniversary in August. (And if my grandfather was still living, he'd be turning 100 on Feb 28).

It's 30° cooler on my porch than it was yesterday. We hit a high of 74° yesterday and aiming for 44° today. That's why you haven't seen much of me lately - I'd been out enjoying the last two days of "SPRING"! Thanks for asking after me, Mayor.

Good to see you Mr. McBV and Rev Jr. too.

Glad things are coming right along, Alyce. It's nice to see everything coming together, isn't it. Have you decided on paint colors?

AFD

February 17, 2005 - Msg 27117: AFD..
Benjamin Moore Paints...
Living room, master bedroom, foyer: Manchester Tan (a light khaki), white trim
Kitchen: (maybe)Cream Brulee...a creamy ivory, little hint of yellow. white trim
Dining room: (not decided on these actual colors, but something of the like) Confederate Red above chair rail, below..the manchester tan..the trim will not be the white, but something of a cream or lighter khaki.
Girl 1 room: Lavender Ice, white trim
Girl 2 room: Elephant Pink, white trim
Guest bedroom: whatever's left over, haha!
Play room: havent a clue..have had some thoughts..but just dont know yet
Their bathroom: a light blue and white..hopefully will have yellow ducks sponged as a border
Oh, Utility room: the cream brulee probably
master bath..the manchester tan, as is master bedroom
Half bath:dont know, maybe the manchester tan again..its off of the living room /hallway
Office: not sure..maybe that Confederate Red all over..I just want a red room I think..But dont want that room to close right up on us with such a bold color
I think I covered all of the rooms..

So anyone wanna come over and paint?

Alyce

February 17, 2005 - Msg 27118: Sure, Alyce, I'll paint. Your color choices sound nice.

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and kind words concerning the little girl who drowned. They removed life support yesterday and were able to donate some of her organs. The local news has been featuring this whole thing on every news broadcast so it is hard to not relive it over and over again. Everyone is really upset about the way the child died and there are already attorneys filing lawsuits against several folks (including the city, for not having ordinances about the old tanks being filled or covered). It turns out there are probably more in the area that are a real danger. The family of the child moved onto the property three weeks ago and claim they didn't know the septic tank was there so the owner of the property has some explaining to do. I will be attending the funeral and will try to do what I can for the family. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your kindness and prayers..I hesitated to tell you all about it because it is such a hard thing to hear about but I value your prayers so much that I felt like I needed to pass it on.

MDC, I just love Extreme Makeover Home Edition! I can't wait to watch your episode. I have never seen an ep that didn't make me cry.

It spotlights the pets that the Nascar people have and bring with them to the races. I'm not into racing necessarily, but I found the show very interesting. I got a dvd of 2nd season Gilligans Island a while back and to see it all in vivid color is quite a treat. I never had a color TV til I was married. Infact the first color tv I got was in 1983! RCA colortrak that is still going strong!
I've never had a single problem with it. On the
masonite back (remember those?) it says MADE IN USA! Sinse I've never had cable, this is the first time I saw all the castaways in color!

February 19, 2005 - Msg 27143: Friends, I'm going to copy in its entirety, a letter I received from our dear TOM. Here it is:

How are you, fine I hope. Everything fine here. Just wish for this weather to make up its mind what it's going to do!

Was just sitting here, so I will write. So how is everyone on the porch doing? I do miss being there at times, when I am down and sad, and just want something to do.

Tell everyone hello and they are in my prayers and maybe you all can send some photos to me.

This is for you and porch, see that it gets on there for me, please.

YOU WALKED INTO MY LIFE

You walked into this life of mine
And brought so much worthwhile;
In just a friendly, bright hello,
One sweet, endearing smile,
You shared a joy I never knew,
So much I now hold dear,
And taught me how to live each day
Without a thought of fear.
I'm glad you walked into my life,
A friendship now is ours,
As hand in hand we walk life's road
Through sunshine and through showers.
I'm truly happy you are there.
Whatever life might send,
It matters not, I'm very sure,
Because you are my friend.
You share my life - my every dream -
Somehow we think as one.
I've found a peace and tranquil joy
As each new day is done.
No more of hurts or endless cares,
You banish tears and strife,
And I am thankful for the day
You walked into my life.
--A friend of the porch
TOM

There you are, folks. If anyone wants his snail mail address, just email me at Romeena@airmail.net and I'll send it. I think he would treasure photos and cards and little notes from his porch friends. I wish there was something we could do about getting him back online. That would have to be a boredom-buster for him.

Well, my friendly little flu bug is sending me back to bed. How long is this wretched thing going to hold on???

February 19, 2005 - Msg 27149: Howdy, all. Alyce, TOM is a special friend. I'm not completely sure of the whole story, but have the impression that he is dealing with a disability of some sort, and requires the assistance of family on a daily basis. He was recently compelled to move to WV, and in the move he lost his access to a computer. He has the snail addies of some of us, and wrote asking for any who wished to do so to write to him. As I said, I'll supply his address for anyone who's interested. You can tell from the letter I quoted above that he's lonely. I wrote him and included a picture of myself and the Plum. He should get a chuckle out of it, it's one of the Plum after she ate a tube of lipstick, so her face is all pink - looks pretty funny. Anyway, TOM is a gentle, sweet soul who has enriched our porch with his presence in the past, and I sincerely hope he'll be able to do so again soon.

Spot, dear friend, having raised four children, I can only say to you - God bless you, giving you strength, patience, wisdom, and the ability to refrain from pinching his little head right off his shoulders, when all around you are cheering you on. Little kids are fun, adult children are a blessing, but teenagers will make you crazy. You are entering the years wherein you will learn why some animals are prone to eat their young.
