December 29, 2004 - Msg 26058: Mornin' Porchsters. Well, as they say...all's well that ends well. (Didn't Calvin Coolidge say that?) Kind of a shakey start there, Mr. Mac, but I believe we're all singing out of the same hymnal now. Welcome! Just don't take your rocker up the pole....balancing it at the top might be a bit tricky. Ro- great poem. KY girl- I don't think we've officially met. I'm Rev.Jr. from SC. Nice to see ya. Alyce- saw that infomercial for the Hee Haw dvd late last night. Problem was, I was fading to sleep, didn't have a pen and paper, and was trying to memorize the number. Here's a good guess...1-800-704-6644....or some combination of those numbers. How's that for being vague?

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26063: Yahoo! Got a new dvd player last night at Target. Got it all hooked up and ready to go this morning. Previously, I had to watch in my daughter's room because the player in the den had died. Now I can watch the TAGS dvd anytime, not just here and there between my kids playing video games. Guess what I'm gonna be doing for the next several days? My life is now complete. As my wife frequently tells me...I'm easily amused. Life is good here in God's country (SC)!
Rev.Jr.

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26064: Good mornin', all! Fine job of sweeping the porch, Mr. McBeevee. Right neighborly of you.

As for Boo, I reckon she's still staying over at her folks' house with them, since they're ailing, and the porch doesn't reach over there, since there's no computer. I do wish she'd check in, though. Hope she's well!

I've been watching my Season One DVD, and just enjoying it so much. Watched "Andy and Opie, Housekeepers", last night and saw something I don't remember ever seeing before. Opie and a little boy named Jimmy were making up Opie's bed, and it was hilarious. Don't remember ever seeing that young'un before or since, but he was cute. It's amazing how much stuff TVLand and the other stations cut out. I sure do hope the other seasons will be released soon.

Well, off I go, to exchange a couple of gifts that didn't fit, have lunch with my comadre, and just generally bum around today. Have a great day, friends. Sugarplum says Happy New Year! --Romeena

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26065: Rev Jr., that's a fine compliment your wife is paying you, whether she thinks so or not. I know she's teasing you, but think about it. When one is easily amused, life is always fun. It means you're comfortable enough in your own skin that you can put serious things aside and just let yourself be amused by the little trivialities of life. Personally, I can spend hours at this window, watching squirrels chase each other, and I've learned a great deal about birds and how and when they raise their babies. Yep, I'm easily amused, and I'm glad! Life is never dull.

OK, this time I'm really gone! --Romeena

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26066: Thank you, Ro. Most of the time my wife means it exactly as you described. However, some of the time I think she means I'm about as sharp as a bowling ball!

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26068: Happy New Year to you too Asa and let's pray that 2005 is better! Good sweep Mr. McBeevee, say, can you make smoke come out of your ears? Glad to see you back KY Girl, don't stay gone so long! Somehow, I don't see Mayor Pipeman as 'our little fat mayor'. I reserve that honor for Mayor Pike, who hasn't posted in some time. To me, pipeman is more like one of the fellers that sets on the bench on the sidewalk whittlin somethin. SPOT, PTL you're on your paws again!! You go slow now and heal well. Ro, I agree that TVLand and TBS have cut out some swell parts. Sure hope the other seasons come out soon. Hey to Sugarplum and all the porch!

December 29, 2004 - Msg 26085: Wow, Mr. Mac, that's really a neat memory. I can't come close to that, though I did date the uncle of Henry Thomas, who played Eliot in "E.T." That family is related to my mom's sister by marriage, so I continued to see them throughout the years, and my kids played with Henry a couple of times at golden anniversaries or whatever. Henry was a very nice, pleasant young man.

Did a bit of after-Christmas shopping today, hit a couple of really good bargains, like 75% off. Had to go all the way to Mt. Pilot, though. Old Ben Weaver never marked anything down that much in his life! Sugarplum says Happy New Year! --Romeena

The closest I've come to a celebrity is when we lived in Indiana and our landlord of the house we were renting was Ken Kercheval's(Cliff Barnes on Dallas) cousin. I was always hoping that old Cliff might come to visit his cousin while he(our Landlord) was around our place(he had a little shop next door where he painted)so I could meet him, but he never did.

I once had an ET stuffed doll..or whatever you want to call it..stuffed alien I guess,haha..and I vividly remember getting so upset when I went to the hospital to get tubes put in my ears and they wouldnt let me take ET with me. He hosts a show on Pax TV now, I think it's called "Cover Story" or something like that. He also was the host of "Temptation Island." He hated it, but it was good money. Anyway, he and I went to high school and college together, and were in the same fraternity. Still email each other. Spot- now THAT'S my kind of supper. (no offense, Pipe) Sorry I missed it. December 30, 2004 - Msg 26093: 'Morning', all. pipeman, the north central Texas end of the porch is fine. Cloudy and cool, but no severe weather around Dallas.

My little fountain/pond froze clear to the bottom last week, and although I had unplugged the little pump, I think it's ruined, because when I plugged it back in after it thawed, it won't run. Fortunately, those pumps aren't expensive. I've been wanting to do some "reconfigurating" on that fountain anyway, maybe this is the time to do it. I'll call my landscaper friend and see what he thinks.

My yard is full of birds and squirrels - one little fellow came up and scratched on my window - so I guess I'd better go put out some feed. They didn't get fed much and mostly stayed away while I had all the furkids going in and out back there. I hesitated to put out food and lure them into the yard with our beautiful yellow lab rescue here, because she has been trained to hunt, we think, and I didn't want any tragedies. However, no one is home now but the Plum, who never even goes out there, so it's time to start putting out feed and seed again. I do love my small wildlife.

Have a great day, folks! Sugarplum says Happy New Year! --Romeena

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26094: Well its 1:00 pm..I think that it is time for a break. Actually the baby woke up and I have to get lunch in her belly...But I did get some things accomplished in her sister's room. Just not finished yet and its almost time for her to come home.

Rev..well I am highly offended that you didnt like my menu for last night!! Naw...just kidding..if you forgot..or missed it..itw as a salad and stuffed shells..think I might warm some up for lunch now..gotta eat those leftovers..even though I am not fond of them. Hate to waste any food.
I'll be glad to post with you throughout the day REV. In between cleaning out toys.
That is cool that you know and still keep in touch wtih Mark Walberg..and I know exactly who you are talking about.

I have been racking my brain all day trying to think of some celebrity that I may have known or come in contact with..I know it sounds stupid not to remember, for some reason I feel like there has been someone.

Does anyone know of Bob Harrington...the preacher down in New Orleans..he worked Bourbon St. alot? He is a character..he came and did revival at our church a few years ago..it was awesome.

Well back to work..
Alyce

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26095: Yep, Alyce, I've heard Bob Harrington, known as the "Pastor of Bourbon Street." He spoke at our church once too, years ago. Very powerful speaker, as I recall. We also had Rick Stanley, who is Elvis Presley's step-brother. He's an evangelist, working mostly with young people, and was very interesting. He spoke highly of Elvis, and told about some of the quiet, secret things Elvis did to help other people.

Woohoo! I tried my little pump again, and it works. I guess it must have still had some ice stuck in the lines when I tried it before. Anyway, it works now. Didn't see any signs of the little goldfish that were in there, though. I guess they froze, darn it. If I had realized it was going to get that cold and stay cold long enough to freeze the pond solid, I'd have taken them out and kept them in a bucket or something - assuming I could have caught them. They're pretty fast, and there are a lot of hiding places in that pond. The poor little things.

Here come the critters. They've realized that I filled the chow line, and they're coming from all around. I love it! I can spend hours at this window.

Not today, though, I have errands to run. Everyone have a great afternoon! --Romeena

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26096: Hey Ro...yep, Pastor of Bourbon St..that's right. Man, he's a hoot. When he came to your church did he bring his little mini toilet with him..He sat it right on the stand where he was.

I am snacking on VA salted peanuts...whoo wee..those are good..and some Pepsi. The Holiday Spice flavor..ya'll tried that?

Alyce

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26105: Alyce, to me, johnnycake is a lot like a pancake, only it's made with cornmeal instead of flour, and you need a bit of bacon grease on the griddle you're baking it on. It gets crispy around the edges, and is soft and sweet in the middle - very good. I'm surely glad to know that I'm not the only porchster that wants peppersauce on my greens. I'm talking about the little skinny green peppers in a bottle, with vinegar, and it's actually the flavored vinegar that you shake onto your greens. Generously, I might add. If all else would fail, I guess I'd put Tabasco on those greens, but it wouldn't be as good. I keep bottles of that peppersauce around, and when they run dry, why I just put some more vinegar in them! They're good for several refills before the peppers lose their zip. Goooooood!!

Got my errands run, packages mailed, groceries in the house, now I guess I'll just have to clean up that messy kitchen. I had hoped the Plum would do it while I was gone, but she's too short to reach the sink, I guess. Clara Edwards didn't offer to do them, either, so guess it's up to me. Have a good evening, folks. Sugarplum says Happy New Year! --Romeena

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26106: Johnny cakes were one of the first foods introduced to the Pilgrims by the Indians, and remain a staple of Rhode Island cuisine. Not found in many other parts of the country, Johnny cakes are ground, white corn cooked on a griddle, much like a pancake, but with a heartier consistency. I found this on google.

Hey to Mr. Mac. I'm not sure we've met.

I also dont use vinegar on my greens..just salt and pepper. My hubby likes vinegar on his collards though.
We had a black out here for around 40 minutes..not something I am too fond of. I was kinda just waiting and watching ... just not knowing what was going to happen..with all the earthquakes and tsunamis..I didnt know if I was going to see my Lord!

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26112: Maybe it was a Miracle Sweep vacuum!Hey Goober
Mr.Mac.

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26113: Howdy, friends. Goober, I think that's just wonderful. There are challenges - legal, financial, and emotional - but all things considered, I admire you and Mrs. Goober for going for it!

Alyce, I have an Oreck, and I can tell you, it's a great little machine. One caution, though. If you have any carpet with anything but very short nap, it will not be satisfactory. My old carpet was one of the "plush" variety, and had felted over to some extent, and the Oreck worked beautifully. My new carpet is one of the longer-napped variety that's come back in style, not shag, but suggestive of it. The Oreck just bogs down and drags on that longer nap. It doesn't have an adjustment for height, which would have been helpful, I think. I had to break out my old, heavy and hard to maneuver Hoover Wind Tunnel. If you have short-nap carpet, though, you're gonna love it. It's quiet, it's light, and it does an excellent job.

Well, it's about time for TAGS, so back to my TV I go. Sugarplum says Happy New Year! --Romeena

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26114: hey again!

Hey Goober..You werent far from me..where south of Richmond are you? I am 1 hour and a half south. Congrats on the adopting. My SIL has a friend who adopted a little girl from China..say she is wonderful!

Ro: The couple whom I clean for..they have an Oreck and it is wonderful..I love it..so tiny, but yet powerful. I have a Hoover now I think, but see we will be moving into a 2 story house..I wanted to get an Oreck for downstairs which will be all Berber (will work perfectly) and then take the Hoover and leave upstairs which wont be Berber more than likely. I like that shag type carpet..thinking of that for upstairs bedrooms. Having a hard time deciding!

Anyway...

Gotta finish cleaning..got involved in a movie.

Goober...
YO!!!

December 30, 2004 - Msg 26118: Alyce, sounds like you have it all figured out. You're right, the Oreck will be great for Berber carpet, and having a machine upstairs and one downstairs is a very good idea. When you buy your Oreck, they will very likely give you a portable, shoulder-strap machine that will work great on the stairs. When I bought mine, I got that machine, plus a super steam-iron. It has no cord, but rather docks on a base that heats it every time you set it down. I noticed an ad in the paper last week that indicates they're still doing that offer. Pretty neat.

Speaking of missing persons, I would really like to know what has become of our dear poet, TOM. We haven't heard from him in ages, and I fear his health may have failed. He was so frail, you know. Bless his dear, sensitive, sweet little heart.

Ditto Mavis. It's been a few weeks now, hasn't it? I know the holidays were going to be very hard for her and her sister. I suspect we'll hear from her soon, after the new year. Oh, my. How much more Heaven draws us, as the years go by. When it gets to where there are more of our loved ones there than here, one begins to wonder why we remain. I don't mean this to sound maudlin, friends. It's really rather wonderful, to be in the place in which I find myself. Heaven draws me, and at the same time I have a lovely life, with kids and grandkids, a nice home, my little Plum, pretty good health, lots of good friends, including my porch friends, few wants, and almost no "needs." Not a bad place to be at all!

Ro: yea, I have it all figured out..except how to pay for the thing! Ha..I checked them out on their website and their little classic one was $500...I dont have that for a vacuum right now..I guess after I tote my Hoover up and down 15 steps maybe my husband will look into the Oreck.

Whats a good carpet for a play room???

I dont know where MAVIS is...I have her on my buddy list and I havent seen her weeks! I do hope she is OK.

December 31, 2004 - Msg 26131: Pipeman, I'll be with a group of old-time friends from church. We've known each other for 30 years, and seen each other through good times and bad. They were there for me when my husband passed away, and they mourned him as a brother. Though I drew into a shell and shut the world out for a few years, they never gave up on me. I'm glad they didn't, because now I go places with them and have fun again, and my husband is mentioned comfortably, just as though he might be away on a business trip. I'm good with that, finally. In fact, I find it very comforting. One of God's great gifts to the human race is the ability to form friendships.

December 31, 2004 - Msg 26146: How-do, everyone. I'm back home. Spent a lovely evening with my friends, even played a couple of games of TAGS trivia, lots of fun. A couple of the men in the group are TAGS fans, so it was a lively game. However, about 10:15 I decided to come on home. Didn't want to be out driving after midnight, and was thinking of the Plum here alone if someone starts shooting fireworks. She hates them, and I have a couple of neighbors who just might. So, I'm home safe and sound, in my jammies, sitting at this wonderful window where I can see ten lighted deer, seven of them animated, and lots of twinkle lights. Sure is pretty. The Plum is at my feet, a happy little camper, and I'd just rather be here than anywhere else, I guess.

I'd like to very sincerely wish the best of New Year blessings for all of you. May your dreams come true, your needs be met, and most of your wants supplied as well. I pray for health for those who are ill, for comfort for those who have suffered loss, and for safety for any of our loved ones who are in harm's way. I ask not that God would go with us each day, but rather that He would take us with Him in what He is doing, that we might have the blessing of helping Him. I thank Him for each of you, and for the blessing you have been in my life, in so many ways.
