Yall have a good night! ALYCE

July 22, 2004 - Msg 22386: Good evening, everyone! Hasn't the TV screen been nice and full this week? Wish we could have these TAGS specials every night, instead of just this week. Sure has been a treat. None of our local channels around here carry TAGS, so all we get is what TVLand runs. We used to have a station that carried it, but it switched to all Spanish programming a couple of years ago, so there went TAGS.

Boo, I'm so glad you got such good support from your church family. You know we all love you around here, too, but you still need to talk to your favorite MD and get some help. Certainly prayer is vital, and I know that I'm alive today because of the prayers of my family and friends, but I also allowed a surgeon to remove the cancer that had invaded my body, and allowed an oncologist to administer chemo afterward. I believe that God blessed their efforts, because I'm alive and healthy 25 years later.

Don't you just love the Mr. McBeevee story? It's one of my favorites. Could any little kid have been any cuter than Opie? Could any father have handled the situation any better than Andy did?

My house still looks like the closets exploded. Will I ever get all this stuff put back? Seems like there's just so much to do, and so little time to do it. Oh, well, a little at a time, and it'll eventually be finished. I hope.

Everyone have a great weekend - Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 22, 2004 - Msg 22387: Sorry your back is ailing Romeena. I know how rotten those can be.
You ask if any Father could have handled the situation any better than Andy did. I say nope! I look at the way Andy dealt with raising young-uns, and then compare to how I would and did handle my kids when they were little, and oh how I wish

July 22, 2004 - Msg 22388: whoops, must have hit a wrong key.
Anyway, I know TV is not real life, but Andy had some real great ways of dealing with Opie that I never would have thought of. His show should be mandatory viewing for all prospective fathers.

Asa

July 23, 2004 - Msg 22389: Yes, Asa, wouldn't it be great if all dads were like Andy? There would be a whole lot of blessed children.

Thanks, Ro. I am following up. I expected to hear from my dr today with the results of my labs and I plan to ask her about my problem. I emailed ALYCE today and she really encouraged me to follow up and get the help I need, too. She is really something special and I hope she will keep coming back here to the porch for years to come. She is one of us!

I agree Asa, that I think TAGS should be mandatory viewing for fathers. But I'll go you one further and say that TAGS should be mandatory viewing for Everyone in the world. If everyone would follow the examples in that show, the world might be a better, and perhaps quieter, place.

Gravesite

A young preacher was contacted by the local funeral director to hold a grave side committal service at a small local cemetery for someone with no family or friends. The preacher started out earlybut quickly got himself lost, making several wrong turns. He arrived a half-hour late, the hearse was nowhere in site, and the workmen were eating lunch.

The pastor went to the open grave and found the vault lid already in place. Taking out his Bible, he started his service. As he was returning to his car, he overheard one of the workmen say, "Maybe we'd better tell him it's a septic tank."

Boo, we'll be praying for you and yours as well, as your sister-in-law enters the fight with cancer. Seems I know so many people right now who are in that battle. I'll be so glad when a cure is found.

It's looking a bit like rain outside here in the Dallas end of the porch right now. Wind blowing, lots of clouds overhead, but it could blow right over, too. At least the wind is blowing the last of the cottonwood hulls off the trees and off my roof. I think that's the end of that mess for this year. I sure wish there was some way to discourage these trees from making all that cotton, but I don't know what it would be. Don't suggest cutting them down - at my age I'd never see anything else grow up to replace them, and I'd rather put up with the cotton for a couple of months out of the year, than to have no trees at all.

I've been working in the yard all afternoon, and am all dried out. I think I'll go bury my face in a slice of watermelon! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Same goes for you too, Boo. I hope they have good news for your sister-in-law.

Romeena, can I share some of that watermelon? I just love it on a hot summer's day!

Did you hear about the man who ate three scoops of Death by Chocolate at 31 Flavors? He died. He was Van Gogh's great grandson... Whatawayto Gogh!

Sorry about that, I couldn't resist a corny one like that...

Good night y'all!

July 25, 2004 - Msg 22435: Howdy, all. Up late tonight, thought I'd drop by the porch for a few minutes. My back is better, though still not 100%, Asa. Thanks for asking. It's just a chronic old "nurse's back", or is that "old nurse's back"? Take it any way you wish, it still applies!

Mary Wiggins, I'd be proud to share my watermelon. Matter of fact, there's plenty, because by the time I finished drinking about six glasses of tea, I didn't want the watermelon! So, I'll probably have it tomorrow. It's a good one, I've already had one piece of it, yesterday.

I got my Mongolia haircut on Thursday. It's really, really short, and I like it. Longest part is just under two inches, and the shortest is about a half inch. We can't take any electrical things, so no hair dryers or curling irons. Therefore, it's gotta be wash and wear. I always wear my hair short, but not usually this short. I think I like it, at least for summer.

Possum, I did not realize that your family just lost your brother in law this past week. It is such a hard thing to go through. I am still praying. It is encouraging to know that the Lord prevented your brother in law from suffering. Thank you for sharing that. Prayers for Laci, too, little angel. May the Lord spare her from any surgery.

It sure has been quiet on the porch this weekend.

Ro, I am trying to picture your short hair. I wish I had the guts to cut mine that short but with my round face I think my head would look like a big snowball. I am going to look up Mongolia on the web and do some research. I have a young friend named Brad who is a missionary and he spoke in church today about his upcoming trip to China where he will be smuggling bibles and helping the underground church (Lord protect him). I thought of you and your upcoming trip. Sounds so exciting. I'm sure you will be blessed!

That was a long 5 hours (really longer, with stops) with a 3 year old and an 8 month old!! Tough on my knees too, but..it was fun. It doesnt look exactly like Mayberry, but it is similar. Didnt get to eat at Snappy Lunch..the line was sooo long..all the way down the sidewalk, and it was just too hot to wait with the kids...so we ate lunch at Barney's instead. It was nice, I should have taken more digitals so I could share, but I was taking mostly black and white, so my scrapbook would look like early Mayberry! We went by and looked at Andy's homeplace, but it was being used so we couldnt go inside. There are others things of interest that arent related to TAGS too though. I got the baby a little tank top that say "Mayberry Princess"..it was cute. I got my picture taken with Russell Hiatt (Floyd) of Floyd's Barber Shop..he has sooo many pictures on his wall of fame. It was nice. They had squad car rides, but we didnt do that either..it was always out riding someone, but it was alot of hassle with little ones. Got rid of the oldest this afternoon(isnt that nice to say..she's at my mama's)so that we and the baby could sleep..and we did! Now off to switch kids and take the oldest to gymnanstics. Going to be a fast pick up supper tonight. MDC: yes, they do still sell black and white. I take black and whites every year at the beach too...makes beautiful pictures..now that the baby is here, we might do our Christmas cards that way....with us on the beach in black and white.

July 26, 2004 - Msg 22452: Hot dog, Spot! That supper sounds some kinda good!

Sorry you are feeling under the weather Alyce. I have been tired all day for some reason, myself. Wish I could just crawl into bed and stay there today but we know how impossible that is with small children.

Did ya'll know that Van Gogh had a cousin who owned a chinese restraunt that only served take-out. His name was To Gogh.

Hey to everyone, hope you all had a nice weekend. Romeena, didn't you celebrate a birthday over the weekend?

Prayers for everyone, sorry to hear of the troubles and trials some of you are going through. Prayers for you, too, Possum, with the loss in your family. (((hugs))) to all of you.

Spot - I was driving through town (Springfield MO) on Saturday and passed a van with a Cobb County GA license plate and thought of you.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time, Alyce. Glad to have you back, and hope that you and hubby feel like yourselves again soon.

Not much going on here - enjoying the beautiful weather. Yesterday's high only 65, today low 70's.

July 26, 2004 - Msg 22460: Yea, 65 sounds pretty good about right now.

July 26, 2004 - Msg 22461: 68 the high here today! Tomorrow more of the same. It feels like fall, and I LOVE it! I know some people get angry if the summer is too cool, but not me. We are supposed to be 85 on Friday, though, so back to normal then.

Asa, I got my hands up for some of that sweet corn. I just love it! Are you any where near the family of Lori Hacking? That sure is distressing news about her. I certainly hope there is happy ending to this story, but unfortunately, it doesn't sound like it will go that way. Prayers for her and her family...

Spot, I hope you get those lights on soon! With 90 degree heat and all around your neck of the woods, I bet nobody wants their air conditioning to go out! Keep up the good work!

Hey to Dixie, Boo, Romeena and Sugar Plum, MDC, AFD, Alyce, Homemaker, Ed Sawyer, Mayberry Deputy, Charlotte Tucker, Mrs. Wiley, Possum, Hazel, Sara, Floyd, Sterling, and Salty Dog! Mary, this thing with Lori Hacking is in Salt Lake and I live about 40 miles north of there. But it has put a damper on all of us. The local news is speculating an arrest may be made in the next day or two. Every day brings forth more evidence and it all seems to point to one person. If he did it, may he rot in he##!
Sorry, I don't have much tolerance for this kind of stuff. And I agree, prayers for the family, it is wearing mightly on them.

Yep, I crossed the big 65 mark on Saturday. Funny, I don't feel any older. At this point, I just sorta feel like every day is a gift, and enjoy it.

It's been a bit cooler here in Texas, too. It was actually in the low 80's yesterday, and not a lot warmer today. Wind from the north, guess that explains it. It brought some of Mary Wiggins' weather to us, I suppose.

Well, it's bedime, according to the Plum. She has sighed really big several times, and now has gone off and curled up in the exact geographic center of my pillow, so guess I'd better take the hint. Have a great day tomorrow, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Did I tell ya'll that a guy who only went to school with us one year in jr. high is coming? Found him on the internet. Everyone liked him a lot and is looking forward to seeing him again. I was planning a trip to the hill country with the kids to camp and swim in the river but the transmission on my Suburban went out and its going to cost me at least a thousand dollars to fix it. There goes the money for my little trip! This September is my 10th wedding anniversary so I hope my husband and I can take a couple of days off and maybe go to Fredricksburg and stay in one of the old restored homes again. We always enjoy that so much, and shopping in town. I think we might try going to Bandera this year, though.

5. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me.
6. I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.
7. The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier.

Rob, there's a lot of truth in what you say about me hiding here on the porch to avoid all the work that's still waiting for me. Also, you know how addictive this window is, and having this porch and the window in the same place is just really a work-stopper. There have been some real hi-jinks in the yard. One of the squirrels has been giving that corn-bungee thing a fit, but I haven't been able to get a picture. It all happens too fast. Just whoosh, and he's gone! I'll get it, though, just give me time. Got some good shots of a redheaded woodpeck er a few minutes ago. Hmmmm, wonder if rubbing his head would ward off a jinx? Don't know how you'd catch him, though.

Gotta go put out bird food and see what's on outside the front door. I know there's something, because the Plum won't stop barking. She smells packages when they're out there.

July 28, 2004 - Msg 22498: Hey AFD,
We had a record temperature of 61 degrees yesterday, and that was the HIGH temperature! My 20 year old son asked, "Whatever happened to global warming?!" I think today it is going to get into the 70's though.

Alyce, I am glad you got your laundry caught up, I remember when I was a child, my parents would take me and my three brothers and one sister camping. When we came home after a week out in nature, my poor mother would literally have mounds of laundry all over the basement!

I guess my High School Reunion will be next year, (30th), and I haven't gone to one yet. I would probably be one of the folks Charlotte and Hazel would be disappointed with. My graduating class was just shy of 900, though, so I don't think any one will miss me. I was just another face in the crowd there anyway!

It sure looks purty out my window this morning. My apple tree is beginning to show spots of red all over it where the apples are ripening, and to me, red apples amidst green leaves, set against a crystal clear is one of the prettiest sights one can see!

I guess I better get out of this rocker and quit admiring the sky, though! Y'all have a great day!

July 28, 2004 - Msg 22501: Goooooooood Morning! Anyone got anything interesting to share today?

Mary W. where are you at to have such marvelous weather? I'm in the Florida Panhandle where it's not the heat.... it's the humidity. And we REALLY mean that when we say it. Humidity is awful. It makes it hard to breath, can't depend on good hair weather at ALL if you have natural curls like me, and before you take ten steps out your door you can be sure to be sweating like a pig.

Boy do we love our winters here even if it doesn't officially get cold until late December. I've been known to where T-shirts to my grandma's on Christmas Eve (or wear a sweater and have to change b/c I'm too hot). Once again I say that we Love our colder weather.

Dixie B.

PS-- Humidity is just as bad in the winter too... makes your fingers and toes feel like they'll just fall off....

July 28, 2004 - Msg 22502: Wow, I can't even imagine those cool days or even apples, for that matter. What am I doing down here?! It won't cool off here for at least 2 more months and then it will only be for one day then hot the next, yada, yada, yada. I am really looking forward to the fall and Thanksgiving. I am trying to think of something different to do, maybe a new, meaningful tradition. Any ideas out there?

Gotta gogh!

Boo

July 28, 2004 - Msg 22503: Hi, didn't see you there, Dixie. Boy, can I relate to what you are saying. I am on the coast of South Texas and the humidity here is horrible! I, too have worn t-shirts and shorts on Christmas. Its a bummer, isn't it? Oh, for a white Christmas!

Boo

July 28, 2004 - Msg 22504: Mary...I tasted one of my granny smiths yesterday and I thought it was rather good. A bit early for them right now, but not long. The beatles really got to our apple trees this year, maybe we need to change the type of spray we use on them. Sounds beautiful whereever you are though. We've had a lot of rain here (VA). I cant even stand the heat like I used to...the days of laying out in the sun on a tin roof with baby oil!! As long as I have some water to get in close by I'm OK. Boo: I'd love a white Christmas as well..I dont remember ever having one. We got married Dec.11th (99) and the week before our wedding it was 80 degrees. I was aggitated of course, because I had a long sleeve wedding gown..I still got hot even though the temp went down though for the wedding. Anyway..yall have a good one!
