Just kinda breezed through the archives real fast and noticed that Mrs Wiley is still having some health issues. I pray that you might find some comfort during this period Mrs. Wiley, and that you will be lead to a Doctor who can ease your pain and discomfort. Chronic pain can wear a body and a spirit down something terrible. So hang in there Hon.
Hope and pray for you too Charlotte. Hope things are going better for you.

Sorry I haven't been around lately. That Pistons triple overtime loss crushed me, but then they won a game in New Jersey, I was sure surprised I hate to admit. Game 7 is tonight, and I appreciate AFD and anyone else rooting for 'em! (Sorry about those Spurs)

I heard about that game that Randy pitched the other day. I guess 40 ain't all that old! It sure feels like it though. (I guess I shouldn't try to pass myself off as a youngster of 40 though! I's 47!)

Romeena, I hope you e-rat-icate that problem in your garden! After all that hard work, I bet it is a disappointment to see those critters there. You may be running the shuttle for a spell, but I hope it clears up the problem real soon!

Spot, you are one hard-working talking dog! Thanks for keeping the vittles coming, and keeping the lights on!

Prayers for Charlotte and Mrs. Wiley and all else who needs them. Especially for the men and women over in Iraq and Afghanistan.

My 6 year old brought home his cap and gown the other day! He looks sooo cute in it. I already went through this with the older two, right through high school, so it is fun getting to do it again with this little guy, and taking the time to enjoy it! He has to recite a little poem about Abraham Lincoln during "commencement ceremonies". He told me he thinks he will be sick that day!

May 21, 2004 - Msg 21453: Regarding "naught".... about the only time you really see that word in American English is like in the phrase "all for naught." meaning "all for nothing".

But in British English, naught is used for both "nothing" and "0," which we of course call "zero" Seeing as how James Bond and Ian Fleming are British, I would assume that they say "double-naught seven" instead of "double-oh seven" like we do....

Where Jethro would've heard this phrase is another issue entirely... :-)

May 22, 2004 - Msg 21460: Was just looking around for info on gas prices and found an interesting table.... This is the price of gas, adjusted for inflation, since 1950:

Year      Price Per Gallon
1950     $1.91
1955     $1.85
1960     $1.79
1965     $1.68
1970     $1.59
1975     $1.80
1980     $2.59
1985     $1.90
1990     $1.51
1995     $1.28
2001     $1.66
Source: How Gas Prices Work

I paid $1.839/gallon this week. As for milk, I paid $3.37 a gallon this week.... if it goes to $5, I'll probably still be buying it and drinking it at the same rate I do now.... I love my milk.

May 23, 2004 - Msg 21470: Well, guess I'll try again, since my first note apparently blew away. Boo, it was good to hear from you. You tell your sweet hubby to fix that computer quick, because we miss you, and we miss hearing about Baby Girl's antics. How is that little young'un and her brother?

Spot, I hope you know how much we appreciate you. If it wasn't for you and all you do, folks would be sitting on the porch in the dark, listening to their stomachs growl.

Pipeman, I'm sure sorry to hear about your health problems. It gets kinda scary when you start talking about losing a kidney, but I'm sure you've gotten at least a second opinion, and your doctors know what they're doing. You take good care of yourself, you hear? You mean a lot to all us porchsters.

Mrs. Wiley, I hope this next round of medics can arrive at an answer for you and get you some relief. You've put up with a lot, and you do it with such good grace. Prayers for you and for everybody else that's ailing on this porch. Oh, and the Plum says she's sorry about that carrot in the soup, she just couldn't resist. Actually, I think she ate one completely, and just nibbled another one a little bit.

Mary Wiggins, has Pat got any more new paintings out? Maybe a website somewhere where we could see some more of his work? I might want another print or two. I have really gotten a lot of joy out of the ones I have. They are just beautiful, and I think I'd like to have more. By the way, you are a caution. "E-rat-icate." That's too funny. I'm still trying to catch the rest of the Ratticus family. I guess I'll eventually get them, one by one. I need to find a drop-off place a little closer to home, though. At the price of gasoline here - $2.09 for premium - I can't afford to shuttle the little critters too far. Guess I'll take the next one down to Myers Lake and let him go.

Well, off I go. Hope the wind doesn't blow this note away. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASA AND TOM!! I hope it's a happy one for both of you!

Congrats to your daughter New Neighbor! Is he a nice guy and all that good stuff? I hope so!

Prayers for Pipeman and Mrs. Wiley, keep us posted about how things go. My brother just turned 50 this year and has had a series of things affecting his health. I thought I would encourage Pipeman and Mrs. Wiley and let you know that all the things the doctors could fix went extremely well, and the things that would have been more difficult turned out to be false alarms! So hang in there, and we'll keep praying!

By the way, we have been getting the rain lately here in Michigan, too. If you saw the footage of some of the flooding in Michigan, and especially the guy holding on to the street sign until a boat came and rescued him, well, those things were very near my home! Thankfully, we have not taken in any water to speak of! But it sure is soggy around here!

Romeena, Pat just designed a pretty little painting that will be of a Tree Sparrow sitting on Apple Blossoms. It's very, very pretty, and he will be painting it soon. I don't know if I sent pictures of an Eagle he just finished. It is absolutely fabulous, if I do say so myself! It was his response to September 11, and I think that painting has a lot of emotion in it. He also recently finished two cardinals, male and female, sitting on a branch. We hope to have prints of that one by summer's end, as well as of the Eagle. No web site yet, but someday! He just signed with a gallery around here again, so we are waiting for them to get the ball rolling, (also known as money)!

Sorry this post was soo long! Hey to one and all of you wonderful porchsters!

May 27, 2004 - Msg 21510: Well, Poor Horatio, welcome back after such a long absence, and what a colorful entrance you made! It's nice to see you. Please come around regular-like.

Pipeman, we'll be thinking of you and praying for you on Friday. This is a big surgery, but I know you're going to come through it just fine. Recovery-wise, it's easier when the whole kidney is removed, as opposed to when it's just opened to remove a large stone, so that's a plus. Prayers for you, friend.

Mary Wiggins, I'd be very interested in all three of the paintings you mentioned. My dear husband loved sparrows - called them little survivors - and I greatly admire cardinals. There is a nested pair that visits my yard daily. Then the eagle - what American wouldn't love that? As soon as pictures are available, I'd be most interested.

Have been working a lot lately, we lost two nurses off our night shift, so staffing is tight and I rarely get cancelled these days, though my name is on the list for every shift. Oh, well, it makes for a better paycheck, but I sure do miss those cozy evenings at home with the Plum. Incidentally, that little rascal pulled my purse down off a low table, unzipped it, rifled it thoroughly and ate several throat lozenges. I'm just glad there was nothing in there that could have hurt her. I do carry Advil, but she was unable to open the bottle, thank the Lord. She tried, it has teethmarks, but it's a twist-on cap, not a snap-on, so she couldn't do it. Such a puppy!

I'm sad for my daughter tonight (not Rob). Her beloved little parakeet died this morning, in the palm of her hand. Just spread his little wings over her palm and died. She's broken-hearted, and I'm a bit upset, too. He was a cute little guy, just a little blue bundle of personality. Isn't it amazing, the capacity God has given us to love even the smallest of his creatures? They bring us so much joy, but it's hard to give them up when they have lived out their short little lives.

Well, everyone have a great rest-of-the-week, and Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

P.S. I'm still trying to catch those little rat/mouse critters in my yard, and this afternoon, of all things, I caught a starling! Poor thing, it was terrified, and flew out of that trap like a rocket when I opened the door.

May 27, 2004 - Msg 21511: Ro, giraffes may be selfish, but starlings are BOLD. What a loving way to go for that little 'keet: in the hands of his mommy. Thats so sad Ro, give your daughter our sympathy. Sorry you have to pull the big shifts, I'll bet Plum gets mighty irked whan youre gone so long... rooting arround in your purse probably makes her feel near you. Maybe she's looking for a cell phome to call you on? :-)

Pipeman, keep a good thought friend and we'll be praying for you... can someone let us know how you make out? I'll start simmering the chicken noodle soup for you.

Good to see you again Poor Horatio... been a long time since I've seen your half-a-boy-ness. Welcome to sara and welcome back Sam Scott!

May 28, 2004 - Msg 21522: Thank you, everyone, for your kind words regarding my daughter and her little parakeet. She'd had him for nearly five years, and he was just a little member of the family. Very smart, lots of interaction with people. Her little boys are missing him a lot, and actually, so is the guinea pig, Carl Bob. Lots of whistling from him, waiting for Pita to respond. Poor little piggie.

Sara, your WWII presentation sounds wonderful. Wish I could hear it. I'm sure our church choir will have something special planned, though. I no longer sing in the choir, so it will be a surprise for me on Sunday.

Asa, are you sure you heard the forecast correctly? Snow?? My stars! I can't imagine snow this time of the year. My roses are blooming, pansies already gasping in the heat, butterfly bushes are blooming, dianthus and snapdragons are finished for now. I'll give them very close crewcuts, and they'll be back, but their spring flush of bloom is over. Oh, Asa, how is little Barney? I'd surely love to have a photo of him for my "Pets Unlimited" folder. Are you into emailing pictures? You have my address.

Well, gonna babysit the little grandboys tomorrow afternoon, so guess I'd better rest up a bit. They're precious, but they're busy! Everyone have a great day tomorrow. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Mercy me, where are my manners. I don't think I have said Hi to you Sara and welcome. That sounds like a neat event you have planned.
Romenna, it's funny you would ask about Barney. We took him in yesterday to get his last round of shots. He also got sick before we got him to the vet. But the vet gave him a very good going over and figures he just has a touch of stomach flu. We also had a chip inserted in him. He didn't think much of that. I do have some pictures of him, I just nedd to figure out how to e-mail them to you. I will try to do that this weekend. And I agree, snow this time of year is silly, but the weather folks are saying 10 to 14 inches down to 7,000 feet. We are at almost 5,000 feet. So well will see if they know their feet or not.:) We need the water much though so I ain't complaining.
I don't bowl Sterling. I golf though. Maybe I could improvise his style into my golf game. Might work.
I hope and pray you all have a good weekend and special prayers for Pipeman as he has his procedure done today.

I would love to see the presentation Sara - sounds right up my alley - I love songs from the 40's and 50's, the Andrews sisters and their harmony, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby -

A stormy evening around here last nite - the tornadoes went south of us, bad for them but good for us.

Up here we put slaw on sloppy joes and or BBQ sandwiches - it sounds gross but it is really good!

May 28, 2004 - Msg 21529: HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND!!!

Let's remember all our brave souls in harm's way all across the world, and all those who have gone on to be with the Lord. I hope the soldiers in other countries today will know that many, many Americans will be thinking of them as we enjoy our freedom while attending family reunions, barbecues, picnics, day at the beach, or whatever things we do this weekend. You truly are America's finest! God be with you all.

I will be attending a barbecue at my sister's on Sunday. Other than that, I have no other plans. I hope to find a little time to RELAX!!

The Pistons play again tonight. It is a very competi-tive series between Detroit and Indiana. Some times a little hard to watch, but always entertaining!

May 29, 2004 - Msg 21534: Sara! Do you mean to tell me that you're in or near McKinney, Texas? I'm from the D/FW area myself! Here we are, practically neighbors, and didn't even know it! Sure is a small world.

You know, there's a freedom in living alone, because you don't really have to do anything you don't want to do. However, there's a hidden trap there. Here's an example. After Christmas, when I finally got around to taking down my Christmas tree and decorations, I was tired and just piled all the stuff in a spare bedroom. The glass ornaments were put away properly, but all the tons of other stuff was just piled on the bed and floor in there. I shut the door and more or less forgot about it. Now, here it is Memorial Day, and it's all still piled in there. I have three extra bedrooms, so even when company came, I didn't need that room, and it's still full! I'm so ashamed! I walked in there today, full of resolve, and nearly fell over. I never saw such a mess. Well, there's only one way it's gonna get cleaned up, and that's if I get in there and do it. Probably should get rid of a lot of it, but it all has sentimental value, and I just can't. I've tried giving some of it to my kids, and they don't want it. Oh, well, I'll pack it away, and maybe I'll sort through it next Christmas. And maybe donkeys will fly.

Praying for Pipeman, has anyone heard how he's doing?

Well, off I go. Guess I'd better eat something before I tackle that room. Spot, have you got any leftovers? I'll send the Plum over if you have anything to spare.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and be careful. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

May 29, 2004 - Msg 21536: Well, I'm officially BACK! Yipee! I missed the porch. I feel so behind, though. I tried to read back over as many posts as I could tonight but it will take a long time to get to all the archives I have missed!

I want to know how your trip went, Ro. Maybe you could tell me when you got back and I can check the archives around that date. I am sorry to hear about H's parakeet. So sad. You know, sean got a chicken around Easter time and she was so cute. He named her Nugget and just loved her. She would follow Sean around the yard. We thought we had her secured but a dog got to her and killed her. Sean was the one to find her and we were both heart-broken over it. I couldn't believe I was crying over a chicken but I really liked her so much and felt so sorry for Sean. He is much better now, though because he has a new puppy. Last Wed night we found an abondoned pup who is about 6 wks old and one of the most beautiful pups I have ever seen. She appears to be a Chocolate Lab with the most beautiful Hazel eyes. We named her Belle (after the heroine in Beauty and the Beast). She is the best! It seems like we are destined to find dogs lately. About three weeks ago I found a little dog in horrible shape. I have never seen a dog in worse condition. She was literally covered with mange and malnourished. She wouldn't let me touch her but I finally got close enough to wrap her in a blanket I had in the car. I took her to the local vet to see if we could save her or if we should have her put down. He said he thought she might make it. My sister wanted her and named her Lucy. She has been treated for worms and mange is already like a different dog. We could'nt even tell what color she was but now her hair is starting to grow in and she looks like a small Heeler. When we first met her she would'nt even let us pet her and now she runs to us to play and licks us. It has been such a joy to be able to take the poor little thing and give her some quality of life. Now my sister laughs and says to the dog, "I love Lucy!" (get it?).

The kids are doing pretty well. We are having some trouble with regulating Sean's medication and that has been hard. He is on a blood pressure med to contol the tics associated with the Tourette Syndrome and it makes him very tired and it is starting to lost it's affectiveness on the tics. I phoned the church prayer chain on Tuesday to have them pray that we would get his problems solved and the next morning Sean had an appointment with his therapist and on the way into the building I ran into an old friend I had not seen in years, as it turns out she also has a son with Tourette Syndrome and he was diagnosed five years ago. She told me I could call her anytime and she gave me the number of Texas Children's Hospital in Houston. She said nobody here in South Texas could help her son but when she took him to Houston, he was seen my a Dr who specializes in pharmacology for children with neuorlogical problems and the first time her son went to her, she put him on the right meds and it made a huge difference. She told me that God meant for us to run into each other and that the only thing she asked of God when her son was diagnosed was that he would use her to help others in the same situation. She has been through alot and has learned so much. I believe that the prayers of God's people accomplish great things and I don't ever want to take that for granted.

Ro, I thought about Baby Girl when I read about Plum getting into your purse! She did the same thing once. Yesterday while I was inflating a pool in the backyard, she wandered into the garage and emptied a can of gasoline onto the garage floor. Horrors! She still keeps me hoppin'.

Well, I have certainly talked enough for one night! Sorry. There is still more I want to tell you but I will save it for another visit. Ya'll have a wonderful evening and day tomorrow.

Boo
