Welcome Salt and Pepper! Like Romeena said, you will like it here!

Romeena, it is hard to believe it is only 52 down there in Texas! Although, I don't believe it is any warmer than that, here today! Cold and rainy too, so I may join you with that hot soup and cold tea!

Great to see Boo posting again, I sure hope she gets that computer fixed. I just found out mine has "spyware" on it, and I have been jumping through hoops trying to get rid of it. I wish people wouldn't be so unkind as to mess with other people's computers, haruumph!!

My Pistons made it through the first round of the playoffs, and they will face New Jersey next. That will be a tough match-up, but I think they just may come out on top of that series! And my Red Wings are playing even as we speak, I may have to leave my rocker in a bit and go check on them. Last I knew, it was 0-0. I thought it would be awful clever if the Pistons played the Red Wings and we could see the basketball players trying to skate down the ice to score a goal, and then a re-match with the Red Wings playing the Pistons and see the hockey players trying to dribble the basketball! I would pay to go see those games!

But today also has the horse racing and Nascar, lots of sports, and the Tigers played earlier today, too. I guess if you like sports you must be in fan heaven right now!

Spot, I hope your weather isn't too bad tomorrow, maybe you better hang on to something so the storms don't blow you away!

Have a great rest of the weekend, porch!

Just got back from the feed store, got lots of cracked corn, birdseed, peanuts, all the goodies for my little wild friends. Also went by my neighborhood garden center and picked up some "color" to go in the few bare spots that will appear when it gets hot and some of my pansies give up. I don't pull the pansies out unless they're just completely dead, though. I crewcut them, plant other things around them, and very often they'll revive and rebloom in the fall. Same for dianthus and snapdragons. I have some of each of those that are several years old. They don't all make it, but many do.

Well, gotta go get started on that slaw. Good thing I have a head of cabbage on hand! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

May 02, 2004 - Msg 21222: Howdy, all! Good to see you, Frankie!
Ellen Brown, my gardening involves lots of flowers and a few herbs, but no real "garden" as in veggies. I'm a flower addict, I guess, and there's a terrific farmer's market about ten minutes from my house, with great prices, so I depend on them for food. I do grow chives, mint, dill, basil, thyme, rosemary and the like, but no veggies.

Spot, I'm a nurse, and have worked the night shift for the past almost eight years. When my husband passed away suddenly, I switched to nights because I couldn't sleep anyway, and it pays significantly more. I only work two 12-hr shifts a week now (semi-retired), and sometimes I don't even do that. Tonight, for instance. I was scheduled to work, but the patient census is down for a change, so I accepted cancellation. No pay, but I'm enjoying being at home. I could insist on working and they have to let me, but I'll usually accept the cancellation. I'll probably fully retire in a year or two. Heaven knows I'm old enough!

The Mongolia trip meeting was interesting. We got some info on dress code, what's considered rude, and a little bit about the food. All I can say is, it's a good thing I'm not a picky eater. I'm going to have one problem, though. I don't drink milk, period. My one "don't". All dairy products are great, I love 'em, but I don't drink milk. Well, if I don't drink cow's milk here in Texas, I think it's highly unlikely that I'm going to drink mare's milk in Mongolia. Especially fermented mare's milk. How I'm going to get around that one, I don't know, because apparently it's a great honor when your host offers you some of his two-year-fermented mare's milk. I guess I'll plead allergy or something. Do you suppose God would allow me that fib in order to avoid offending someone? I sure hope so!

Well, off to watch a little TV, then hit the ironing board. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Good morning Porchpals! Ro, I'll bet after 2 years that mares milk tastes NOTHING like milk. Probably more like a funny-colored wine. I'm concerned about you going all the way over there - esp. in this dangerous time for Americans. You keep that headscarf wrapped tight, OK? I too was wondering what you'll do with The Plum.

OK, where's Asa? Did he bring us any souvineers? Did he find any interesting tin-foil to add to his ball? Hey to EB, Frankie, MDC, spot, SRM, AFD, and everyone missing!

May 03, 2004 - Msg 21228: Good morning, all! You folks are so kind to be concerned for my safety on the Mongolia trip, but the word we have is that there is no cause for concern. It isn't an Islamic country, so no need for headscarves. We were told that what we were wearing yesterday would be appropriate - I was wearing jeans, a tee shirt and a blouse. No shorts or short skirts, of course. One "nice" outfit for any official functions, and the rest can be just casual, but clean and tidy. The Mongolians are a tidy people, and they consider Americans to be more cultured than they, so they would be aghast at scruffy dress.
As for the Plum, I wish she could stay with you, too, Ellen, I know she'd have fun. She will be staying at home and a friend of mine from church will stay here at night with her. She gets fed morning and evening, and uses piddlepads so there's no need to let her out during the day. Our bedroom is a safe haven for her, and that's where she'll stay when my friend isn't here. We did a trial run last month when I went to Michigan, and it worked out fine. My friend charges less than a kennel, (I'd stay home if that was the only option) and the Plum gets to be at home, plus my house is occupied, rather than sitting empty for two weeks. Works out very well.

Well, I gotta go get my passport application started today. Finally got my birth certificate from San Antonio.

Thanks to you all!

And I thought my 6 year old was big! 92 1/2 pounds and almost 5 feet! What are you feeding that boy?! (He is probably growing on love, too!)

Romeena, be safe on your trip. It sounds like you have a great arrangement for little Plum. Sounds like your garden is looking great, too. I love watching the little critters out my window, also!

I would LOVE to see the Pistons play San Antonio. San Antonio is such a class team, I am glad they are doing well. They are probably my favorite from the west. But of course the Pistons are my favorites from the east! My poor Red Wings, however. We have a player named Steve Yzerman, and he got hit right near the eye by the puck in the Wing's last game. It looked awful to see the replay. Well, he went through 4 hours of surgery to repair a scratched cornea and a fractured orbital socket. He has been playing here since he was 18, and he is probably at the end of his career. This may have finished it for him. He won't play anymore this year, and I can't imagine him wanting to play again next year, but he is one class act, and it will be sad to see him leave. He is the team captain. (The Red Wings play tonight to stay alive in the series, by the way.)

I have a question for all you nascar fans...I saw the replay of Jeff Gordon winning the race, and I know he won last week as well. Why are the fans throwing bottles and trash at him and his car? Don't they like him, and if not, why? He seems like a very likable person. I sure can't figure that one out!

Here's wishing one and all a wonderful, blessed Mayberry type afternoon!

May 03, 2004 - Msg 21233: Mary Wiggins .. the reason the fans were mad at Gordon is because they thought he should have been placed behind Earnhart Jr.when the caution came out ,but the scoring transponders they have on the cars and a camera shot showed Gordon was ahead of Jr. when the caution came out ,and with only 4 or 5 laps to go NASCAR wasnt going to have enough time to get the field lined back up for a restart ,so Jrs fans ( I use that term losely in this case ) littered the track in protest ,this act was very dangerous to the drivers as they were going 70 mph under caution and could have easily cut a tire and crashed .I love racing but the ones who threw the trash were sorry human beings .. so sorry to vent

May 03, 2004 - Msg 21244: Well - we have had the pink eye epidemic at our house. My 7 year old loves good food Mary -his favorite is broccoli with cheese sauce and he hates french fries (he will eat them without salt). I am so glad that McD's is offering apple slices now - my boys really don't care for fries all that much. Especially the oldest one - we went to a Wendy's near Columbus Ohio that offered fruit cups instead of fries - they both opted for the fruit.
There was an auction tonite but we stayed home and I made cookies for the youngest one's kindergarten class 'cept he won't be going with him coming down with pink eye - his brother had it over the weekend. Yucky stuff! Lucky I have the meds to treat both of them.
We did buy a new goat this weekend. Hope to get the website updated really soon to show off the kid crop from this year. Now that the weather will be cooperating. The new one is mighty pretty - mostly deep red with a little white and she is bred to a red buck, so she should have babies around August. We have about 22 goats right now. We hope to get them trained for showing soon.

Well, the footers are getting ready to be poured for the house. we've got 48 acres right on the NC/TN/VA border in God's country and we are so happy. Unfortunately I'm away from the family while building because it's a ways from Asheville(where we live now) but it will all be worth it in the end.
Well, wanted to drop by and have a pop with yuns while I was nearby a computer. Hope all are having a good ole Spring and the flowers in each of your neighborhoods are big and bright!

Charlotte Tucker, thanks for the kind words about my yard. It's pleasant and peaceful, and there's always something to be done, so it keeps me busy. My landscaper friend will be here tomorrow to put in a few more shrubs out front, and to change out a sprinkler head that needs to throw a little wider arc, and that should just about finish the big stuff. I'll be planting color every season forever, I suppose, though a lot of it does revive if I give it a close haircut as it's going down. I have pansies and snapdragons that are two years old, and dianthus that are at least four years old, and some have even been transplanted and survived! Of course our relatively mild climate helps a lot.

May 06, 2004 - Msg 21280: Oh, austrees are fast-growing trees originally from Australia I believe that are a combination of a willow and something else. They are used to make fast-growing windbreaks but from what I've found on the Internet they also often die out fast. You guys are letting me down. I thought surely some porchster would be an authority on them! Pipeman, you know anything about austrees? You live in Illinois. Most people here use them for windbreaks (which we need desperately!).
Take care everybody. Prayers for pipeman and Mrs. Wiley and Goober's daddy. My 93-year-old uncle needs 'em too. He's dying a very slow death. He won't eat and they're not giving him IVs so he's just basically starving to death. He looks like skin stretched over bones. Very sad. Once a healthy muscular athletic man. He was a softball coach. What it was, was...I was sick, and so was my computer! I went to the doctor yesterday, the first time I have been in 3 years, which I am told, I should NOT be proud of, but I don't like doctors! Well, I found out I have strep throat, but I could have, and did, tell him that! It felt soo bad. I was nearly in tears. Then, the old computer was acting up something fierce. Been a busy week for me and looks to be a busy summer. Lots and lots of work projects lined up.
Glad your back with us Mary Wiggins and hope you and your puter are getting better. I saw your Pistons won again last night. Bet that made you smile.:)
The race at Fontana was a blast but it was hot hot hot there. Pushing 100 in the grandstands. That in turn caused the drunks to get drunker and the scantly clad girls to get scantlier clad. Shocking what some folks wear in public, just shocking! I'm still blushing. We had really good seats, only 14 rows back and about halfway between turn 4 and the finish line. It was a good time.
Hope you are all well and happy. Hope you have a good weekend and God bless all you dear Mothers out there, and God bless our troops. Seems they are getting attacked from Iraq and from home again by a few scoundrels who politicize everything that goes on any more. Not that I condone the actions that a small few in the Military have done but dang, lets not condemn the whole lot. (whew) sorry, had to get that one off my chest, it's been laying there giving me a nasty taste in my mouth. (putting away the soap box)

My DIL can season up the meat just right, and my son is a grillmeister, and we had some good burgers! Two beautiful little grandsons to play with, and a good time was had by all.

Asa, I know what you mean. It does hurt to see those pictures of our own people doing such things to Iraqi prisoners. We'd like to believe that as a nation, we're above such things, and I think that as a nation, we are. However, I don't know that we have to be too abject in our apologies to the Iraqis. I don't recall hearing any apologies from Iraq for the atrocities that some of their people have committed against American captives in the recent past. I think if the things that have created such a furor are the worst that happens, then the Iraqis have gotten off pretty lightly by comparison. At least those "humiliated" prisoners were able to walk away. As someone once put it so succinctly, "war is He-ll", so get over it, Iraqis. (putting away my soap box, too.)

May 10, 2004 - Msg 21309: Bless your uncle's heart CT. May he rest in beautiful peace.

may I do a bit of venting here (not to be confused with the soap box)? I just got a chain letter from my m-i-l, who is about to undergo surgery to remove a tumor in her neck/skull base. She's grasping for help, asking for prayers, etc. but she's also turning to new age, mysticism, Kaballah (Jewish mysticism) and now chain letters. OK. So this am I wake up to the chain letter, asking you to make a wish on a particular Saint of the Catholic Church. I was outraged. Like faith was a magic 8-ball or something. Would I send a chain letter asking you to make a wish on Elijah, or Muhammed, or Billy Grahm? I replied to 'all'. I was kind and gentle, although I wanted to BLAST them. Amongst the things I talked about was this:

...If I were to make a wish though, it would be that people would trust GOD, even in the midst of their suffering. When He sees you putting full faith and confidence in him, like a little child, he is somewhat obligated to care for you with love and compassion. Sometimes we don't get our 'wishes', but if we try to accept His will for us in the moment, we are NEVER disappointed. I believe turning to new age mysticism, chain letters and 'luck' only serve to anger Him...

Can I get an Amen?
