Good Sabbath to all my porch buddies. Hope you all have a great day. We got pounded with another 18 inches of snow yesterday. It is a wet heavy snow too. Lots of water in it. Man, will I ever be happy to see spring. This morning the sun has come out and hopefully will warm things up and melt some of it away.
Guess I better go clear off the driveway.

We used to have a local gas co her in AZ known as Blakley's and they had almost everything EXCEPT gas! heehee. Glasses, towels, spinners, tops, yoyos, water toys etc. And that was in the 50's 60's when they had the gas wars! recall one time it got down to 19 cents a gal!
Boys the brown truck could fill up cheaply back then!
Leg-o-lamb for supper tonight?
Think I'll watch a little TV and then to Thelma Lou's. (Oh, in that color ep of the reunion, it was kinda sad when ole Thel said she was married and intoduced her husband.) I though she and barn got married in the Maybery Movie??

Boo, what were those other gold-colored stamps we had in Texas? There were S&H Green Stamps, of course, and the Texas Gold ones, but there was another kind that were yellow or gold colored, and I can't think what they were. I think they came from the Handy-Andy grocery stores. Didn't Texas Gold come from HEB? I know I used to lick stamps and paste them in books until my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth, and would finally get a little mixer or something, and I was so proud! I remember the towels in the detergent boxes, too. I have a lovely old rose-colored vase/bowl that was my grandmother's, then my mother's, and now it's mine. My mom said she remembered going downtown on the bus with her mother to redeem Octagon soap coupons and she got that bowl with them. Must have been in the mid-'20's. That would make that bowl about 80 years old, and I remember when it used to sit on the sideboard in my grandmother's dining room. None of us were allowed to touch it, it was my grandmother's pride and joy. I loved to look at it, though. My mom remembered that, and perhaps more valuable to me than the bowl itself, there is a little sticker on the bottom, with "for Lanni" written in my mother's hand.
Well, a little nap, then over to my DIL's folks for a fish fry. Yep, that's what I'm gonna do. A little nap, then over there for a fish fry, and....

Ro, you made me cry with your story. How beautiful! Hope that bowl is around for many years to come. I have several bowls and such that were passed on to me and I treasure them. My older sister doesn't seem to care about such things but I really do. I have the little ceramic boy and girl that sat atop my grandparents wedding cake back in 1920. My grandfather died when my dad was a boy and my grandmother died when I was five so I feel like I have a little piece of them with me. I know it sounds strange and I don't know how this fits into Christian theology, but sometimes I almost feel like my Grandmother is near me and all these years later, whe is the only relative that I still grieve for. I wonder....
Well, I don't remember the other Gold stamps, Ro, I only remember the Texas gold ones. I do remember shopping at Handy Andy when I was very young, though. We don't have Handy Andy down here anymore.
WHEN DID THELMA LOU AND BARNEY GET MARRIED?!!! I missed it. What movie was it in? I HAVE to know!
Hey, wanted to tell you that our church was packed out today. I know at least one person was there because they saw The Passion last week and it changed theie life. I am wondering how many others were there for the same reason because we NEVER have that many.

Seriously, Andy seems to be a very private person (who can blame him?) and we have never been in contact with him in person. We just have a wonderful time anyway, here in our CyberMayberry. Honey, this porch runs all over the United States and to several places outside the country. It's a bi-i-i-g porch. Big, I tell you! It's really big! So just pull up a rocker, wherever you are, and visit for a spell. Newcomers are always welcome. Just ask Ed Sawyer.
Boo, one of these days, I'll think of the name of those other stamps. Might even find one back in the recesses of a kitchen drawer. (yuck) I think the Handy-Andy grocery stores are gone everywhere, haven't seen one in years.

See there's talk about age here.. I don't like that narry a bit! I've got a big one this month...it starts with a 4 and ends with a naught...I don't like it at all!
Did see the Passion last week...I'll tell you...it made a big impact on me. Also on my 11 and 13 years olds...they're just amazed at the depth of love that Christ showed for them...they never really got that before...so that's more than worth the cost of the tickets!

Hey Goober, we were posting at the same time. I am interested to know how your 11 yr old handled The Passion. Did he seem very upset by it? My son is only 9 and wants to see it but I think he is probably too young, although he went to the pastor yesterday and wants to be baptized. I know he has as much understanding as a 9 yr can have but not sure if he can handle the movie, yet.
I think I will wait until its out on dvd and maybe edit out the hardest parts (which would be most of the movie, I guess). We'll see...
Later...

March 01, 2004 - Msg 19779:
Hey Boo...actually, she's not yet 11...won't be till September. I was a little worried about her...not sure...but she's very mature and very sensative from a spiritul standpoint. The 13 year old openly sobbed through many of the beating parts...he's a lot more free with his emotion. Paige just sat and watched...not a lot of emotion..but a lot of intensity. After..we talked a lot about it...and while she offered a lot of thought and opinions...her best was that now she gets it...she knew that Jesus loved her...and that He died for her...but never knew just how much.
I think every parent has to make the call for their kids...since you son has come to a place of understanding the importance of baptism and what God means to him...maybe he would be fine...it's a hard call.
The violence in the movie is not at all what hurt me...it was watching the depiction of someone that means so much to me...allowing himself to suffer for the things I've done wrong. Yes, the scenes are harsh and disturbing...but they take a back seat to my guilt for all the things I've done...and all the times I've failed Him. I'm taking some other folks tonight to see it...folks that are not believers...but want to see for themselves.

Romeena- I recall premiums in OXODOL but not Octagon. Might be the same. Also, seems like we saved a million of the little betty crocker certificates for our neighbor lady from cereal boxtops.
In AZ we had GOLD BOND stamps. Could it be those?
Pipeman- remember driving up to a gas pump and asking for "a dollar's worth!!" (haha)
About 3 guys would come out, check tires, oil etc too, then I'd hand them my dollar and off I'd go to pick up Betty Sue! (Yup, my first date's real name!)

Went rose shopping today, found five of the ones I've selected, but that's all. Guess I'll have to order the rest. They cost more that way, wish I could find them locally, but I've checked all the nurseries anywhere near me.
Beautiful day today - about 72 degrees, beautiful blue sky and golden sunshine. Saw a hilarious moment this morning. I have three squirrel houses up in my trees, and I happened to be watching when a blackbird flew up to one of them, carrying a wad of what looked like dryer lint in his beak. He landed in the doorway, obviously planning to enter and start a nest. Suddenly the lint went flying, the bird went flying, and a very ticked-off squirrel poked his head out of the hole, chattering furiously, and I about choked on my tea. It was too funny!
Well, off I go. Everyone have a great evening. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

And if it makes you not complain enough, then I need to see it, I've been complaining a lot lately. Seems like if it can go wrong it will with me lately. Plus, remember the boy that was killed in the car wreck here in November last year? I've had to do two interviews with lawyers and one with an insurance adjuster this week since I was the one who called 911 when it happened. I really hope I dont wind up having to go to court over it. Be praying for the family of the boy who got killed, they are really giving them a hard time over this whole deal. I know money cant bring their son back, and no amount is worth his life, but I hope they get something worked out soon. The one for last Wed was "In Him we have redemption through His blood" (Eph 1:7) Kinda puts a whole new light on it, dont it? On some Sunday mornings I watch D James Kennedy, and he is offering a FREE booklet about the passion, made to give to friends etc. If interested, he is at PO Box 555, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33302.

Bought six more rose bushes today, just need about four or five more and I'll have all that were on my list, plus a few that I just couldn't resist when I saw them. Laaawww, I'm ready for spring, like never before. I can't wait to see this yard when everything greens up and blooms.

Lots of chit chat. I love chit chat! (unlike Lydia from Lydia). MDC, I think there must've been a miscommunication sometime or other. I described my porch awhile back. My husband built it for me several years ago though. It is on the south side, sunny, and glorious. Ro, I'd suggest Vicks for those nails. My father-in-law was having awful trouble with his toenails--fungus, sharp, cutting his feet when he slept. And he has diabetes so this was not a good thing. I told him what you told me about that toenail fungus, and the Vicks has REALLY helped! Good to see you Ellen Brown and Salty, fungirl, jennieboone, homemaker, Jelsik, Hazel, pipeman, spot, goober, Asa, Boo, Mrs. Wiley! My goodness, who's not here? Where is MAVIS??! March 02, 2004 - Msg 19824:
Well Charlotte, Barney's coming along SLOWLY with his training. He knows where to go but I think he gets to excited in his running around sometimes and waits till it's to late to make it where he's suppose to go, and, well, the rest is history. It will be good when our snow melts and he can get outside and play on the grass.
Our local news did a story on Elizabeth Smart tonight. Can you believe it has been almost a full year since she was found? What a happy ending. She is now 16, a freshman in high school and doing well. Wish they all turned out that well.

March 02, 2004 - Msg 19825:
Asa, Barney is still very young. I hope you don't have the problem I have had with my weinie dog, though. I have had her for five years and have never been able to get her trained completely. She also wee-wees when she is scared or excited. Drives me crazy. We have to keep her in her crate most of the time when she is inside. She doesn't mind, though, she loves her crate and has a comfy bed inside. She has always been a strange dog because she would never play. All she ever wnats to do is sleep (or dig holes in the yard!).
Been a busy day today with the kids. Baby Girl has been up to her usual antics (she threw a handful of those refills that you put in a stapler in the toilet today and I had to remove them with kitchen tongs). She is getting easier and sweeter, though. Last night when I put her to bed and told her her story, I thought she was asleep and I pulled her close to me and whispered, "I love you". Her little arm came up around my neck and she said, "I love you too, Mama." After I went on to tell her she was my little angel and I loved her so much, I heard her say in her sleepy little voice,...."I happy". What greater reward could a parent have? God is so good to me every day. I'm so thankful for my family and my friends. You are all such a special part of each day. God bless you and your families and thanks for being such wonderful friends.

Your comments about your boys were sure sweet, homemaker. My eight year old has always been very affectionate to him mom. Don't you think there is something very special about the relationship between a mother and a son? Those boys are such a blessing. Makes it worth putting up with the teen years, I'll bet, and then when they give you those sweet grandchildren, wow! I always hope my son will grow up to have a son just like him.
Asa, my sister sent me the funniest email the other day. Hey, there, Shoe! Good to see you. So, you've noticed that about TV Land too, have you? Very strange....and to top it off, we're getting a marathon of "Starsky and Hutch" tonight, of all things. Naturally, a marathon means that we'll be seeing them nightly in the future. I'm sorry, if that's somebody's favorite show, then please forgive me, but it just can't hold a candle to TAGS. Wish those folks up there in the ivory tower of TV programming would wake up.
We had a real frog-strangler rainstorm this afternoon. It's the kind that would have left me with four inches of water standing in my back yard for the next several days, but with the new drainage system my landscaper friend put in, there are only a few isolated small puddles back there right now, and they'll be gone by morning. That little geyser out by the curb in front was spouting water for a couple of hours after the rain, and you could see the water swirling into the collection grates in the back yard. The man is a genius.
Boo, I love the stories about Erin. Folks, she is the cutest, most angelic-faced little thing you could ever imagine, and the activity behind those big innocent eyes is just amazing. Her brother is a fine, sweet young man and appears to be very conscientious about looking after his little sister. That may not hold up all the time at home, (if it does, we'll nominate him for sainthood) but that was the impression when I met him.
Well, guess I'll go give the Plum a carrot, she has nudged me and tugged on my shirt a few times, and that usually means "give me a carrot, please." Have a great weekend, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
