February 06, 2004 - Msg 19157: Howdy friends, Guess this is gonna be a long message as I have not posted for a while. I went to the doctor on Tuesday and I lost another 2 and a half pounds for a total of 17. Needless to say I am thrilled.

Boo, as for the All of a Kind Family, it is pretty old. I have not seen the book for a while, but I did see the book on tape at Cracker Barrel sometime last year.

I can relate to how your felt CT at your son's game. Kyle wrestled in and exhibition match on Wednesday night and Mike and I were nervous as cats on a hot tin roof. He lost the match, but were thrilled that he got to wrestle at all.

Before Kyle was born, I had picked out the names:
Joshua Clayton or Willian Caleb for a boy. These were not Celtic enough for my hubby. That's how Kyle became a Kyle and not a Caleb or Clay.

My first flame was bad news. Very emotionally abusive and just an all around jerk. Then I met fungi and he was just the opposite in every way. Now the first flame is addicted to crack and has no self control in any area of his life. Very promiscuous. (sp?)This is the man that I prayed that God would keep me with for life. Thank God for unanswered prayers.

Heard a lady say this at a seminar a couple weeks ago and it gave me chills.

"God is just waiting for you to step into your magnificance."

Pretty awesome thought, huh?

February 06, 2004 - Msg 19164: Morning folks,

Got a e-mail from a cousin in Anchorage, Alaska he told me that we've had more snow here this winter than they have had there, 152 inches to 76 inches. This winter seems to be tagging everyone this year west, east, south, and north.

Goober, my Grandmother-in-law also suffered from Alzheimers. She has since passed but I understand what your going through. I'll keep ya in my thoughts and prays. We had a hard time dealing with the "why" part also. Granny was a quiet, dignified, respectful women. To see her go through that was tough. If it's any consolation the doctors told the family that it was going to be much harder on us than it would be on her.

Possum, Sorry to hear the news about Laci couldn't be better but I have to agree with Romeena praise God that we live in a country with the know-how to take care of such things.

Ed Sawyer, my daughters gave me THE GHOST AND MR CHICKEN for a birthday present a couple of years ago. I always said that movie is what all other movies should be measured by.

As long as were sending out prays lets continue to keep the troops and their Commander in Chief included. Our neighbor (21 years old) is in the 10th Mountain division in Afghanistan when the news broke about the 7 soldiers getting killed last week and one was from our county we scared to death. Turns out he was not involved but we (and his family) went about 24 hours before we knew. Boy, I'll tell the world got pretty small that day, from mountains of Afghanistan to the hills Cattaraugus County.

Prays to all porchsters and out to the family of the little girl in Florida. What has happened to some of us?

God Bless,
auh2o

February 06, 2004 - Msg 19165: Hey, all! I haven't had a chance to do much more than scan the recent posts, but will sit down and read them tonight after dinner. Prayers to all who are dealing with trouble.

Thankfully I missed that Super Bowl incident, but I am thoroughly disgusted by the lack of respect a lot of young people have for themselves and each other. I realize it's just an image the media is pushing on the kids, but it gives them the idea that "everyone's doing it," and they're not! And I don't believe for one moment it was unplanned. Why in the world would JJ decorate a part of her body that no one was going to see? Gimme a break.

Fungirl, I'm glad you were able to get away from the ex. Your comments reminded me of a saying I like to tell my kids from time to time and that is, "God answers ALL prayers, but sometimes the answer is 'no.' " Thank God for that!

Blessings to everyone. It was chilly this morning down here in Texas... I'm ready for spring!!

February 06, 2004 - Msg 19166: Mornin' all! Yes, I too ask prayers for all our troops! Havnt mentioned it, in trying to keep porch talk "lighter", but I have a brother AND his son in USMC. Both were in Iraq and now home again, but please pray for God's covering over all of them. It aint easy! I guess sharing our problem IS really what the porch is about in a way.
Auh20- WOW, 152 inches. But much needed there to put a damper on the drought. Keeeep waaarm!
We had more needed rain in Phx!
Charlotte, your sentence was funny! And you do writing?? (teehee)

Please come back to the porch!

February 06, 2004 - Msg 19167: Good Morning Des, and everyone else!

Chilly in Texas?! I got to scrape the ice off my van again! But I, like everyone else, am ready for spring!

Excuse me while I gripe a minute. I took the trouble to go to Fed Ex at 9:00 yesterday morning to get a package off with an early start. It has to go from Michigan to Florida and be there by Monday. (Yesterday was Thursday) It was unframed artwork going to our framer, so the timing was unavoidable and unfortunate. Big box, big price: $155.00!! for shipping! That didn't make me happy. But I understand sometimes you have to pay for stuff. What makes me angry though, is when I check the tracking on the package I paid 155.00 for 2 day service. Expected date of delivery is Monday! I sent it Thursday. They show they recieved it from me 9:00am. They did NOTHING with it until 9:30 last night! ERRRRGGGHHH! It BETTER be there by Monday! AND at 9:30 last night it was still here in Michigan! Oh well, enough about that!

Some one was asking about first flames. Mine wasn't the best situation either. I met him while I was still in high school, and we married a few years later. He was, and is, a nice person, but he came from an abusive and broken home, and sometimes I don't think we realize how damaging that is to a child. He ended up with a drinking and drug problem, and it was more than our marriage could take. I knew he had problems when we married, but being a young idealist I really thought I could help him. That is not a good reason to marry a person! I married again at 30, and husband number 2 came from a stable loving family, and he is a man of integrity and discipline. We have had our problems from time to time, but in this marriage there are TWO people trying to make it work! And that makes all the difference. Not to mention that we both are God-fearing, Christians who are old enough now to understand that our actions effect others around us!

auh20, thanks for the reminder to keep the President and especially the troops in our prayers. A timely suggestion and I will heed it.

May God's gentle Spirit be with Carlie and may the Comforter be with her family at this time. Such a sad day...

Mary Wiggins

Despite the news, let's all do our best to have a good weekend and to get to church on Sunday.

I just knew if I was patient and showed unconditional love to the JERK I was dating, that he would come to know that someone valued him and that he could open himself up to love. HA! Fat chance. All he did was drag me down. Finally I moved back home with my parents to get away from him. I just knew I would not be able to stay away from him any other way. Sometimes we do things we don't want to do, but they turn out for good in the end.

February 08, 2004 - Msg 19220: Prayers for your dad, Asa. Sorry I wasn't here on the porch when that request first came through. Anxiously awaiting an update from you. How old is your dad? Well, folks, my son's team got beat at the state tournament, but the experience was great and boy did they have no problem taking our money down there. Sweatshirts, T-shirts, a photo plaque of the team & cheerleaders and we bought it all! I say, how often do you get a chance to go to state? Well, it was fun while it lasted. Are you gettin' a new porch, Mrs. Wiley? How are you feelin'? Pipeman, I have no clue about the TV guide covers. Am interested in hearing the answer. I do believe I've heard that Lucy was on more than anyone else. Is that true? Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes. Had a quiet day at home today after church. Party at my Mom's will be next Sunday night.

Regarding first flames, I have to say I had a couple of first "flares", as most teenage girls do, but only one true flame, and even though he's now with the Lord, the flame still exists in my heart, and always will.

And if I remember reading right, I think there were 7 or 8 TVGuide covers with TAGS.

Bummer about the game Charlotte, but I'm sure it was an experience your son and his team will never forget. Who knows, maybe next year is their year!

This is to notify you folks that reside here on "The Porch", that you all are some of the most kind hearted and wonderful folks I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, cyber or in real.
As I have read some of your posts on behalf of my Dad, myself and my family I am truly honored to sit with you wonderful people. Thank you so much for your prayers and kind words, especially when some of you are going through the very same thing.
Sadly, after a few days in the hospital, and many many tests, they cannot determine what has caused his sudden downhill slide. It has been dramatic to say the least, and very sad to watch. Sadly his condition is the same if not worse than a few days ago. I do hope and pray his suffering is minimal.
Thank you again for your kindness. You all are wonderful folks who I appriciate more than words can describe.

Asa and Goober, my heart goes out to you both. I've walked that path, and it's rocky. Keep the faith, trust in the Lord, and know that it can't and won't last forever. One consolation is that the worse Alzheimer's gets, the less the patient is aware of their situation, by the very nature of the disease. Their perception of reality is not the same as ours. For example, when my aunt was well into the disease, she saw nothing at all unusual in the fact that my mother was giving her a tub bath and dressing her like a child. In fact, she wanted to show people the bathtub, because "it's just the most wonderful thing, and makes you feel so good." I know there can be violent outbursts - my dad had them - but you just have to remember that it's the disease acting out, not the person you love. My prayers are for you, friends.

My landscaper friend has been here today, and we've made some more plans for some work in my back yard, involving a pathway and a rose bed, and some lighting. It should be lovely. Am also planning to have the inside of the house painted (no, I'm not calling Newton Monroe) and the carpet replaced sometime over the next year. Then maybe my nest will be finished, and I can just enjoy it. God is good.

February 09, 2004 - Msg 19248: Evening Porch,
I just dropped my in-laws off at the airport. They are heading down to the southern end of the porch to get away from the cold and snow! (Wish I could have gotten on that plane with 'em!) They are such wonderful people. I am so blessed to have in-laws that are supportive, loving and kind. Sometimes I like them better than my husband!! (just kidding!) My own parents are already gone, so it makes me appreciate my in-laws even more. Asa, I have been thinking of you, and praying for you. I can honestly tell you that time does heal all wounds. I have been "an orphan" for 6 years already. It sure doesn't seem that long. But God is good, and I know where my folks are, and that they are both in God's loving care. Seeing your parents suffer sure is one way of making it easier to let them go...

But then, there's the future...during dinner I asked my 6 year old if anything interesting happened at school today. I expected some news about someone losing a tooth, or that it was someone's birthday today, but noooooo! My little guy told me he got in a fight with the biggest boy in the class. The way he described it was Jack was teasing someone else so my guy told him, "I'm not afraid of you" so Jack jumped on him and my guy punched Jack! I was rather surprised to hear this, and I asked what did the teacher do? He said she didn't see the fight but he did get his name on the board for something else!! Trust me, that is NOT like my boy a-tall! I guess that's what I get for going around asking questions!

Where has Irishter gone and run off to? I hope he visits again soon! And all the other missing folks. Well, I better hit the hay, y'all have a peaceful Mayberry night!

February 10, 2004 - Msg 19251: Howdy, everyone! Spinish, huh? Well, I just might, you never can tell. I do love the stuff. One of my favorite things, and a real dieter's secret, is spinish dip. You know, the one that you make with the dry vegetable soup mix. The recipe calls for a cup of mayo and a whole bunch of sour cream, and I make it with one tablespoon of mayo (for "smooth"), a fourth cup of sour cream, and a whole big carton of fat-free yogurt. Into that I mix four packages of soup mix, and then stir in four or five packages of thawed frozen spinish, with as much liquid squeezed out as I can. Add some chives or green onions, and a couple of cans of chopped water chestnuts, and it's delish! It's supposed to be a dip, but the way I make it, it's almost a salad. I make up a big bowl of it, and it lasts me three or four days. I can make a meal out of a bowl of it, and there are very, very few calories in it, but lots of nutrition.

Boo, you're very kind. However, while the yard is pretty, it's not something you'd drive six hours to see, by a long shot. I'll email you a few pictures, though, if you'd like.

February 10, 2004 - Msg 19257: ((Asa)) - Prayers for you and your family. It is tough at the end when we sometimes feel helpless as to what to do to make things easier for our loved ones. Hope your dad's suffering is minimal.
My hubby lost his father the day after Thanksgiving last November. He had been in ill health for several years but had been fighting valiantly with cancer for the last 5 years. It was such a comfort for our family to all be there to tell him that he was a good husband, dad, grandpa, etc., and that we loved him the last moments of his life. He went peacefully with all his family there. It's hard letting go, but knowing when he took his last breath on earth, he took his first breath in heaven.

Good for you, Salty!! Way to go!!

Allan Melvin also played the convict in "Andy's Vacation".

Father God Almighty, take your servant, Asa's dad into you heavenly kingdom. May he be with you forever. As I write this, the song Shenendoah is
playing in the radio. My mom continues her fight as well. God is good and will and does hear us.
In reading archives, I saw that no one mentioned the beatles Ed Sullivan 40th annv. I was about 12, laying on the living room floor wondering what the big deal was all about.
My mom just kept saying "I dont get it."

Did you all see where a NC krispy kreme is starting to sell kosher donuts?

I see now how TV can affect us! After months of watching nothing but Andy and other pretty mellow shows, I decided to watch the opening of Pearl Harbor the other night and had terrible nightmares! It's back to Andy for me.

First flames...hmmm.... in 6th grade I made a homemade, pretty fancy valentine for a girl that I had a total crush on. I slipped it onto her desk at the beginning of recess. She turned out to be a real Helen tho! Not EVEN a spark from her, much less a flame. (teehee) Oh well, that's life. Been married now for 28 years, so cant complain! (Tho some may see that as a reason TO complain!) (heehee)
