Asa, the Plum has been acting a little moony too. Lots of sighing, and occasionally the sigh is a little drawn out, and sounds like "Ssssaaaammmmmmyyyyyy!" My stars, what have we done, letting those two meet? The Plum will be nine on the day after Christmas, and that's entirely too young for her to be falling in love.
Spot, I'll bring some slaw to go with the lobster. Mercy, I do love lobster. With melted butter and lots of lemon, please. Hush puppies are nice, too, but I'd rather have them with fried catfish. Lobster is better with a baked potato, in my opinion, but I'll take it any way I can get it. I feel the same way about crab legs. Don't know which I like best.
Well, gotta run. I've got two kinds of cookies to bake, and I think I'll make a big batch of Nuts & Bolts, or Scattermix, or whatever you want to call it. The cereal/nuts stuff, seasoned with melted butter, garlic salt and worcestershire (and a few other dynamite ingredients) and baked to a crispy, crunchy condition. Good!

There's been reports of a man running around Mayberry with big shiny dangly Christmas earrings on- Take them things off Asa! You're making a spectacle of yourself! Ha Ha!
Who was it talking about the 20 month old baby that acts like a wildcat? I can sympathize- got me a 3 month old grandbaby who I think is gonna grow up to be a doctor or nurse or something, cause she's always trying to give me a tracheotomy with her bare hands! Don't let her get riled up-she'll about beat a hole in your throat with that little hand of hers! But,I can't hold it against her cause she's so dang cute!
Well, time for me to dig into that good hot baked potato and it ain't polite to talk with your mouth full,so that's gonna be all the chit chat from me tonight.Y'all have a good night!

Happy Birthday SPOT!
Hey Porch,
I sure have been amused, amazed, and inspired reading all the posts of the last few days. Wonderful, wonderful things going on! Mayberry Girl, thanks so much for sharing your story with us! I have to say, I have been getting similar treatment this year also! God is soooo good. Yesterday at church, people were coming up bringing me plates of cookies, and I received an unexpected gift today from someone. It sure does make you realize how much God loves you, and I think that is always a good thing to realize. I also know this, He does not love me one bit more than anyone else on this porch, and I hope anyone who may be feeling a little down at this time will have the blessing of feeling God's love, rich, full and genuine in your life, even right now.
Oh, and Asa, I just thought I would let you know, I refinanced my house just so I could get you a decent present. I just couldn't bear the thought of not having a gift for you, when you went to all that trouble for all of us here on the porch. I hope you like what I got you!
Got to get back to my cookies now, I am baking candy bar cookies, and since they are such a favorite in my family and all my brothers are bachelors, I have to bake lots and lots of cookies! Next, chocolate chip, and after that, brownies! (If it doesn't contain chocolate...why bother?!)

Boo, hope you didn't get too tired last night and accidently start wrapping cookies and baking presents! Happened to me one year.
Not really.:)
We will be going to my Sister-in-laws on Christmas Eve and, per my Mother-in-laws orders, since she owns Christmas:), will uphold her(M-i-l) tradition of waiting until Midnight before we can open presents. And there is no bending of that rule, it has to be Midnight; not before nor after(well, who would want to wait any longer?!). No matter how tired you or your kids are. She even tried to keep my daughter up one year when she was sick(she was 1 years old at the time)! Well, I kind of shot a look at my wife, and she knew exactly what I was thinking, and she finally had the backbone to stand up to her Mother and say "let her sleep!"
That's one Christmas "tradition" I could do without. Do you get the idea I have some issues with that woman?:) I never had a problem with her before, and I never understood why people always talked about Mothers-in-law like they are over-bearing, controlling, manipulative monsters because she was never like that, ...until a few years ago. She must have read the manual and figured she was doing all wrong, you think?
Anyway, then on Christmas Day we will go to my Brothers house where we can open presents any danged time we feel like it!! ;)

Sterling, I'm intrigued by your MIL story. There had to be a trigger somewhere - wonder what it might have been. fun girl could be on the right track with her idea about "the change". Also, can you think of any major event that occurred around the time her behavior changed? Did someone close to her pass away? Odd that she'd settle on the time presents were to be opened as a sticking point, and to be so inflexible about it. Was that possibly important to someone who passed, and she felt that she had to continue it for their sake? Just wondering....
Mary Wiggins, sounds like it's about time to send someone to Sam's for some of their baked goodies, and for you to prop your feet up and rest for a while! It's Christmas for you too, you know.
Boo, tomorrow evening I'll be at my son's after church, along with his wife's family, who happen to be my good friends as well. Then Thursday I'll have dinner with them at DIL's parents' house. Friday my girls and the grandkids will come from Fredericksburg, and we'll treat Friday evening and Saturday like Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. That way, all the other parents and grandparents get their time with the younger generation, and I get them for the weekend. It all works out pretty well. We started that when I often had to work on Christmas, so it benefitted everyone, and we still do it even when I don't work on Christmas, just because it works so well.
Well, guess I'll turn in. Sugarplum says ho, ho, ho! --Romeena

I don't know if this has been posted here before but I haven't seen it. I got it from an old Porch friend a little while ago and wanted to share it. What better day than Christmas?
Just Checking In
A minister passing through his church
in the middle of the day,
Decided to pause by the altar
and see who had come to pray.
Just then the back door opened,
a man came down the aisle,
The minister frowned as he saw
the man hadn't shaved in a while.
His shirt was kinda shabby
and his coat was worn and frayed,
the man knelt, he bowed his xhead,
Then rose and walked away.
In the days that followed,
each noon time came this chap,
each time he knelt just for a moment,
A lunch pail in his lap.
Well, the minister's suspicions grew,
with robbery a main fear,
He decided to stop the man and ask him,
"What are you doing here?"
The old man said, he worked down the road.
Lunch was half an hour.
Lunchtime was his prayer time,
For finding strength and power.
"I stay only moments, see,
because the factory is so far away;
as I kneel here talking to the Lord,
This is kinda what I say:
"I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, LORD,
HOW HAPPY I'VE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND EACH OTHER'S FRIENDSHIP
AND YOU TOOK AWAY MY SIN.
DON'T KNOW MUCH OF HOW TO PRAY,
BUT I THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY.
SO, JESUS, THIS IS JIM
CHECKING IN TODAY."
The minister feeling foolish,
told Jim, that was fine.
He told the man he was welcome
To come and pray just anytime.
Time to go, Jim smiled, said "Thanks."
He hurried to the door.
The minister knelt at the altar,
he'd never done it before.
His cold heart melted, warmed with love,
and met with Jesus there.
As the tears flowed, in his heart,
he repeated old Jim's prayer:
"I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, LORD,
HOW HAPPY I'VE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND EACH OTHER'S FRIENDSHIP
AND YOU TOOK AWAY MY SIN.
I DON'T KNOW MUCH OF HOW TO PRAY, BUT I
THINK ABOUT YOU EVERYDAY.
SO, JESUS, THIS IS ME CHECKING IN TODAY."
Past noon one day, the minister noticed
that old Jim hadn't come.
As more days passed without Jim,
he began to worry some.
At the factory, he asked about him,
learning he was ill.
The hospital staff was worried,
But he'd given them a thrill.
The week that Jim was with them,
Brought changes in the ward.
His smiles, a joy contagious.
Changed people, were his reward.
The head nurse couldn't understand
why Jim was so glad,
when no flowers, calls or cards came,
Not a visitor he had.
The minister stayed by his bed,
He voiced the nurse's concern:
No friends came to show they cared.
He had nowhere to turn.
Looking surprised, old Jim spoke
up and with a winsome smile;
"the nurse is wrong, she couldn't know,
that in here all the while everyday at noon
He's here, a dear friend of mine, you see,
He sits right down,
takes my hand,
Leans over and says to me:
"I JUST CAME AGAIN TO TELL YOU, JIM,
HOW HAPPY I HAVE BEEN,
SINCE WE FOUND THIS FRIENDSHIP,
AND I TOOK AWAY YOUR SIN.
ALWAYS LOVE TO HEAR YOU PRAY,
I THINK ABOUT YOU EACH DAY,
AND SO JIM, THIS IS JESUS
CHECKING IN TODAY."

Just hopped on the porch to say Merry Christmas and hope you all had a wonderful day.
I am full and sleepy (that turkey will do it every time). I had turkey and all the trimmings at mother-in-law's and ham at Mom's. Whoo-eee.
The kids had a great Christmas with lots of toys. Baby Girl got a pink tricycle (what she wanted from Santa) and I think my son got just about everything on his list. My living room still looks like a disaster and my Christmas tree is all dried up and dying. I think I will just rent a bulldozer and run it through the house tomorrow!
Gotta go play Life (the game) with my son. Later, friends!

Merry Christmas, friends! De§, thanks for posting that poem. I read it sometime back, too - don't remember if it was posted here, or perhaps you emailed it to me - anyway, it's beautiful. Thanks.
The "disaster" won't hit my house until tomorrow evening, as that's when my daughters and my grandkids from Fredericksburg will arrive, and we'll have a Christmassy weekend. Last night was lovely, with my son and his family and her parents and myself all in church, and then out to my son's home for the evening. Would you believe they had a seafood meal there for us, including -- yes, lobster! I loved it, of course. Today was another lovely day, spent at my DIL's parents' home - more good food and gentle fellowship. I do miss my dear husband, and my parents, but I am blessed nevertheless.
Spot, was that you who got the power back on at my house around noon today? It went off for about half an hour - sweet potatoes bake rather slowly when there's no power, and a shower by candlelight was interesting, but Spot got right on it, and the power was back on in time to get my potatoes baked. A big thank-you to all those who work on holidays and keep the wheels of our lives turning smoothly.
Well, I think I'll turn in. Sugarplum says ho, ho, ho, and I repeat - Merry Christmas! --Romeena

Hope everyone had a joyous Christmas. Ours was especially good. On Monday my husband and I went shopping. We visited a furniture store looking for a new couch, which we still haven't ordered yet. But while we were there I saw this great print and said "If I were rich, I'd just buy that!" On Christmas day we drove to my husband's parents' house where he presented that lovely framed print to me. I was very surprised, especially since he drove many miles back to the store to get it the day after we had been there! I'm so very glad that things are going so much better for us! Thank you for all your prayers, dear porch friends!

Good idea, pipeman! Hope you feel better soon.
Ro, it is so neat to be able to put names with faces when you talk about your daughters coming this weekend. Hope you have a wonderful time with them. When you mentioned being in church wanted to tell you about our Christmas Eve service. One of the men sat in a chair at the alter and read the Christmas story and he invited all the children to sit around him (mistake, in my opinion because there is no nursery for that service and all the little ones are present). Well, of course Baby Girl wanted to go up and it didn't take long until she was trying to run back and forth and make a big disturbance so I picked her up to take her out and she really did make some noise! Raising two year olds is not for cowards.
Charlotte, how sweet of your husband to get you that print! Tell us more about it. What kind of print is it?
Well, think I'll start up the old bulldozer and get some work done.

December 26, 2003 - Msg 18051:
Dear Friends,
I have had a wonderful Christmas. Many memories of Grandpa who passed in July. I had written a poem the day he died and my brother read it at the funeral. Well, Christmas Eve he presented everyone a picture of Grandpa in a frame with my poem printed beside it. Everyone was teary. Then my step-dad gave brother a fishing pole that had been grandpa's. And an aunt gave step-dad an old Indian Head penny that had been grandpa's. (sniff-sniff)
Got many good gifts, but one of the best was a visit from a dear friend from college. (the David we have been praying for) He was always like a little brother to me and as his mom and brother and dad are all dead, I invited him to spend Christmas with us. He stopped on the way to spend a little time with his grandma who has alzheimer's and said she was in wonderful spirits and was coherent and everything. He said that was the best present the could ask for.
God is good and the family has grown this year. It was little Rosa's first Christmas and as my father would say, she made out like a fat rat! He will be over today and we are doing the gift thing here with him. Having camrel fondue. YUM!
Ro, tell me some good things that are simple to make and would be allowed on the diabetic exchange diet. NO I am not diabetic, but the doc is trying me on that diet just to see if I can drop some pounds. (I realize that fondue does not fit into that category.) I am doing really well for the most part, but I hate to cook. I have never eaten so many veggies in my whole life. There aren't many I like, so it's a chore. Giving up soda has been the hardest as I can not use Nutra-Sweet. Makes it hard for me to breathe.
Well, gotta go check the fondue. Love and hugs to all.

Just a few things to explain that are mentioned in the poem, the I'll cut loose.
Grandpa was known to many game wardens in southern Missouri as the Old Fisherman. (Lord, that man loved to fish.) Lahr Lake is where my mom and step dad (Bill) live. Grandpa loved to fish there and one day I remember Mom had fried up a mess of fish and he was sitting at the table and he sighed real big and said, "Ambrosia" and I looked up and he had grease from ear to ear and the most mischevious smile on his face, like he'd gotten caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Grown men would go up and ask if he was Mr Hix and once they even did a rush job on a t.v. repair cause on of the repairmen recognized Grandpa as the man who had fixed his bike when he was a kid. Corky is a parakeet and he didn't learn much else, but constantly repeated "Where's Harvey?" Current River is where the family goes tubing every year in July/August. "Because He Lives" was Grandpa's favorite song. The rest is self explanatory.
The old fisherman had fallen asleep.
The fish of Missouri breathe a sigh of relief.
"Ambrosia" he said of a Lahr Lake blue gill.
His smile said it was worth,
The climb back up the hill.
The stories of his life we treasure as gold.
Especially of Bill jumping in the water,
In his last dry set of clothes,
To capture a renagade fishing pole.
A man who repaired bicycles for children,
And as those children aged,
They remembered the kindness of Mr. Hix.
We'll remember him all of our days.
A man who loved a bird
And the bird loved him too
Now when Corky asks, "Where's Harvey?"
What's poor Grandma to do?
The Current River was the summer gathering place,
And Grandma and Grandpa Hix kept up with the pace.
And now as we float down, we'll all shed a tear,
For Grandpa won't be floating the Current this year.
But "Because He Lives", we will see
The old fisherman again.
He is just sleeping until his Savior returns for him.
Then once more he will cast his line and reel 'em in.
We were so blessed to have him
With us for so long.
But now he sleeps in Jesus
Til Jesus comes to take him home.
That's it!
Love Ya'll!

Oh by the way-nabs are those square, orange crackers with peanutbutter that you buy at the store. I think the Lance co. makes them. Drink a Pepsi and eat a pack of nabs. Has any body ever heard of that. Maybe it's just a NC thing.

Hey, friends. I have a sad note to insert here. I just had an email from Asa, in which he told me he had to put Sammy down last night, due to his serious illness. Asa is understandably very upset, and he asked me to let everyone know, saying he just didn't think he could say it right now. I sent him a copy of "Rainbow Bridge", and assured him that everyone will be thinking of him and his family right now. He said he is so sad he can hardly stand it, and I'm sure he is. He loved that little furkid very much, and most of us understand that very well.
Sorry, don't mean to be raining on anyone's fun, and I'll be back at another time, but I wanted to deliver Asa's message promptly.

Hey, everyone! It's late, family has all gone to bed in various rooms and corners of the house. Beds are all full, couches hold sleeping folks, and I'm about to retire to my room with the Plum. We've had our belated Christmas over this weekend, and it has been wonderful. Lots of reminiscing by my adult kids, grandkids playing games both indoors and out and getting along beautifully. Good food, friends joining us at intervals, lots of fun during gift exchanges - it's just been a great weekend.
JudyJudyJudy, my daughters live in Fredericksburg, Texas. It's just a bit north of San Antonio. Small town, heavy German influence, very quaint and fun to visit.
fun girl, your tribute to your grandfather is just beautiful. I'm sure he'd find it touching, to know how you treasured him.
As far as good dietetic recipes go, I'm probably not much help. Even though I am diabetic, and insulin dependent, I don't follow a really rigid diet. I avoid sweets most of the time, though I will indulge now and then. I try to watch the carbs and fats, but as I say, I'm not strict about it. I drink plain tea, no sugar, and almost never drink a soda. Can't stand artificial sweeteners of any kind - the aftertaste is just not acceptable. I adjust my insulin according to my blood sugar and also to what I anticipate eating, and manage to stay in pretty good control.
pipeman, I'm so sorry that you and Star Trek are ailing. Stay in, stay warm, drink lots of juices, and get to feeling better! Nice folks shouldn't be sick.
Boo, you're so right. I just love it that I've met you and Mr. Boo, and Sean and Erin. I can just picture that little Baby Girl taking control of the Christmas service until you carried her out. She is a caution!
