November 12, 2003 - Msg 16580: Good on ya Leon and Mrs. Leon! I sure enjoyed the special, but turning off the phone wouldn't have helped me. Cable went out and I missed the first 2 min. of it, then 2 visitors came over, then one more, and they all had to ask what I was doing, then laugh because I like TAGS...GRR. Twice I had to tell them "I've been waiting 2 months for this show - SSHHH!", then they'd laugh some more. But seeing Ang and Barn together made it all OK. Made me teary at the end when Andy told Ronnie "I love you, I love you so much." That clutched me - right 'chere. They could have done another 4 hours and kept me rivited.

Asa, are you sure SaltyDog heaved those napkins? I thought it was that guy from Back-Bay Boston.

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16581: Well - what I got to see of the special it was good. My oldest decided it was his turn for a temper tantrum. He was overtired and he hadn't had a very good evening so in turn, I didn't have a very good time watching it. I just wanted to go and hug Andy, specially Andy - I think he has come to terms with his role on that show and how it has touched generations. I know from what I have read that he was forever "niched" as Andy but I think he realizes that was not a bad thing. I found Jim and Andy's shoes interesting - they were those kind from Land's End that slip on. Golllllleeeeeee - we all need a hug fest!
Asa - glad you had a heart to heart with your daughter - now breathe and pray that all your raising of her has taken hold and she will do what is right.
thanks for the info warren about last night's show and spot - I put some scraps from last night's supper on the back step. Lick the bowl clean so I don't have to warsh it so hard. LOL

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16582: Homemaker, I think it's funny that you would notice the shoes! Now I wish I had taped the show so I could go back and look at the shoes. I somehow missed the part when Andy told Ron he loved him. My two young ones were awake, too and it is hard to watch anything with a 2 yr old in the room. She recognizes Andy now and when I am watching TAGS she points at the screen and says "Andy!" (guess I'm raisin' her right). My eight yr old likes to watch TAGS with me, too. His favorite ep is when Otis goes in house arrest at Andy's house and drinks out of Aunt Bee's flower vase. He mentions the flower vase incedent often.

Well, I sure enjoyed all the posts from last night. Some of you are very funny!

Better go. Lots to do today. Have a great day!

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16583: Watched last nite and found myself welling up continuously. Felt a bit foolish, but by the end of the show I was a full-out waterworks....Those guys just touch my heart

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16584: I noticed the shoes. I noticed it once before the commercial, and then payed attention to it after the break. Sure enough. I figured I would be the only one wierd enough to notice the shoes. Guess great minds run along the same track, huh homemaker. Or maybe it's the clean living here in the Hoosier state. LOL

I am so glad that Andy, late in life, has embraced that simple homespun show and realizes just how much it has come to mean to people over the years. You could really tell he was so proud of "Ronny". Kyle was hysterical over the scene where Bee, Andy, Opie, Themla Lou, and Barn are sitting around the piano singing "Good Old 14-A" and Opie says, "Someone sounds terrible!" then he keeps on and finally Andy clamps his hand over Opie's mouth. Kyle even talked about it after the show was over. See TAGS reaches all generations.

Best of luck to you and yours!

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16585: That has to have been the best reunion show I have ever seen! It was done really well, I thought. I liked the way they had the 'then and now' scenes at the fishing hole and on the set they recreated. And just the relaxed way the whole special was produced; it really was like seeing Mayberry again. I'm really glad I taped it! That's a keeper!
And I had forgotten that TAGS was Jim Nabor's first acting job. He shouldn't have worried about his acting because he was great! I never thought about it until he mentioned it - that Gomer Pyle was the only character he has ever played.
I kept wanting to see them all in their old costumes as they were sitting there in the courthouse. Especially Don. He's always wearing that hat that he wears on Matlock. I wanted to see him in his deputy cap.
All in all though, a great show! The only complaint I had was that I never wanted it to end.
I wanted to say to them that since they had that set put up anyway - why not bring the show back! Even though I know that could never happen; it is a nice thought. But I don't think they nor we would want that to happen anyway. It might turn out to be another "AfterMASH", eek! Besides, TAGS will live on forever in reruns, and Mayberry will live on forever in our hearts.
I also agree with alot of you that it was bittersweet. And as Andy looked back at the courthouse, I couldn't help but be saddened by the thought that he was looking at something he would never see again, and we would never see him in again.

But then I realized - no, he's looking back at something that he has accomplished and that he is very proud of.
And he deserves to be proud.

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16588: Hello Folks. I have been watching this show all my life, but just in recent years have I realizied what it really means to me and appreciated for what it is. Growing up in a small town in Kentucky that has begun to turn more into a small city has caused me to long for the simplier, kinder times I knew as a youth. I know it is alot due to selective memories, but watching the Mayberry folks seems to take me home.
We had our set of similiar characters also, such as Otis and Barney.
I have just found this site and did not realize that there are so many others like me out there, kindred spirits, you might say.
I, too, taped the special and was so happy to see the guys together on the "set" once again.
Ya'll take care.

I have a problem. I missed the special! I have been depressed ever since. I had been waiting for the special to come on for quite a while. I am a scoutmaster in my community and I have scouts on Tuesday nights. I was in scouts growing up and I think scouts has a little bit of mayberry in it. Maybe that is why I am in scouts as a scout master and another reason why I like TAGS so much. Anyway, I set my VCR for the show and the worst possible thing happend. It didn't tape it. I contacted CBS to see if I could get a copy and they aren't planning on putting it out. Please if anyone has the special taped could you please make me a copy? I would be very very grateful.
Thanks

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16592: I noticed the shoes, too! Jim's were yeller. Another thing I noticed is that lots of small pieces are cut out of the reruns we see now (to save time/add commercials?). One example: they showed one 5 sec. clip of Gomer sitting with MaryGrace (NRNMG) on the sofa. He was casually showing off his yeller socks to her, and she was acting all embarased that he would be letting her see his 'stockings'. We never see that in the reruns! There were several little bits like this I noticed. Anyone else remember one?

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16594: Hey Porch,

I LOVED that special! I foolishly didn't tape it either, but I am certain that someone will contact Lawrence and get a copy to him. The folks here on the porch are like that. I hope all the new visitors will come again and visit often, we love to hear from all the other "kindred spirits" who love the show like we do.

I watched the show with my 6 year old son, who usually complains when I watch Andy, because he just doesn't "get it" yet. Seeing some of the clips literally had him laughing and rolling on the floor! I was soo happy. I really want him to develop an interest in this show because I truly believe it has so much to offer. He especially laughed hard when Barney invited Opie to punch him in the stomach! The way Opie looked over at Andy for permission, and the way Andy tells him to go ahead, and then Barney's expression...priceless!

I had one question, when the show ended, I noticed that Andy shook hands with Jim, and expressed to Ronnie how much he loved him, but Don just walked out the door. Does anyone know why. I had heard before that Don has vision problems, and other health problems, so maybe that was why. I just was expecting a hug or handshake from the Sheriff and the Deputy and I was kind of surprised when Don just walked out.

Oh, and I know where Benton Harbor, Berrien Springs, Watervliet, and all those other places in Michigan are, my husband and I travel A LOT!

I think I better batten down the hatches because they are calling for snow here by tomorrow so ta ta for now!

November 12, 2003 - Msg 16595: By now I'm sure everyone saw the show last night. I really believe that TAGS is what made Ron Howard what he is today. It's nice to FINALLY see Andy Griffith embracing his home town roots a bit. Some where along the line he tried to distance himself a bit from the show and North Carolina. It was great to see him appreciate, not only the show, but the millions of fans who are out there. I hope everyone is doing well and it's great to have time to get back and say "Hey" to all ya'll porchsters. Have a Great Mayberry Kinda Day!

I also noticed the shoes when Andy and Ronnie first sat down on the bench at the fishing hole. The show should have at least been two hours long. It was so much to look back at. I wish the whole thing had been in black and white. Did anyone notice at the end it went to black and white as he closed the door?? Speaking of missing folks, has anyone seen Tom lately? Seems to me it's been several weeks at least since we've been blessed by one of his sweet poems. I miss that boy. Asa, how about you and Warren putting out an APB and see if you can find him? Sugarplum says she'd help you, seeing as she's of the canine persuasion, but her talents run more to lap-sitting, rather than missing-person-sniffing, unless the missing person is carrying concealed carrots. She suggests you see if Spot can help you. If he finds Tom, he has the added advantage of being able to talk with him and encourage him to come back to the porch.

Well, off to bed. Forget the ironing board, that thing's too hard! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

I watched Andy Griffith this morning.
It was the one where Barney sought
authority , Floyd spoke in circles
and Opie learned a valuable life lesson.
Looked to be pre-Goober.

Andy made everything right.
Bound them up with love and reason.

I needed to speak with him.
Just for a moment, to get some direction.

But, he wasn’t in the book
and the MCI Op showed no listing for Mayberry.
I see he is on this afternoon, at 3:35.
I hope I make it.

Man, is it windy out there or what? We only briefly lost our power, but there were fences and trees blown down, nasty stuff, anyone to the east of us...watch out! We even saw a little of the white stuff today! (Didn't stick, though.)

I think Moonshiner is right about that episode, "Andy on Trial". Welcome to the porch by the way!

Where has Boo been? You must be much too busy with baby girl lately! Try to set yourself down and give us a visit!

And how about Tom, we need one of your beautiful poems as the holidays approach. It's interesting how a poem can say so much with so few words.

I hope all those who are looking for tapes of the special are getting hooked up, I saw that someone was willing to make copies of the program and send them out if they pay for postage, mighty neighborly of you!

Good to see Sterling and Ed Sawyer, and Emma and Jennie Boone, and all the new names...PLEASE visit us again, we love the company!

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16651: You know, one thing that was so special about that reunion show, was it helped us to remember some of our favorite episodes. They referred to the one where Gomer was helping out, and he kept dropping his shotgun from the roof, and the one where Opie killed the mother bird and then raised her young-uns, the one where Barney was dancing with...is it Big Maude? just so funny. Maybe we could kind of recreate the atmosphere of the show by giving a snippet of one of our favorite episodes. I absolutely loved the episode where Andy and Helen get trapped in that cave, and poor Barney, who has already been the laughingstock of the town arranges a very involved rescue operation, just to save his best friend. Of course, Andy and Helen have found their own way out, and Barney is in danger of being made a fool again, but Andy is much too fond of Barney to allow that to happen. Well, you know the rest! I hope that gives every one a smile just thinking about it!

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16652: Great idea, Mary Wiggins. How about when Andy was going to get the cat down off the roof (you know how you'd feel seeing your mother on the roof) and Barney tries to get Andy to take his gun and Andy says "I won't need it, Barn. Fluffy and I've been friends for years." That was the episode where Luke Comstock comes to town I believe. What a great scene that was..Fluffy.

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16659: You think you're kiddin'? An I. Q. can be a mixed blessing these days. Some folks want it and can't get it, I had it and had to get rid of it.

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16660: Sterling and Ed Sawyer, where on earth have you been?! Goood to hear from you again.

I'm curious, were any of you forced to watch Lawrence Welk when you were a kid? My dad loved the show and sometimes he would make me watch it with him. I hated it supremely. Just an old memory I thought of.

Thanks for missing me, Mary Wiggins and I have been mighty busy but mostly because of my elderly parents (taking them to dr visits and cleaning their house....). You know, I don't mind at all doing things for them but it sure seems to bother them that they can't do for themselves anymore and they feel guilty when I help out. I wish they didn't.

Hasn't the porch been nice and full since the Mayberry Reunion Special?

Gotta go....I am exhausted and need to veg on the couch for awhile. Love to all!

Boo

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16661: My favorite episode is Man in a Hurry. When I am in all that traffic in Durham everyday, I start daydreaming about sitting on the porch trying to peel an apple without breaking the peeling. How relaxing it is to hear Barney and Andy singing and even Malcolm Tucker joins in. "I'm not keyed up, Who's keyed up". We sure don't have the windows up tonight. The wind is still howling!!AND IT'S COLD!!

THOSE FLU SHOTS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!!That didn't hurt a bit--oh that was just the alcohol. Ahhhhhh!!!

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16662: Whew, so much talking going on here I don't know where to start.
Homemaker, I hope your Daddy is ok. Did he get home from the hospital? Hope all is well.
Yep Boo. I had to watch Lawrence Welk every Saturday night I think. Mt Dad just loved it. He still watches it on a local PBS station here who plays reruns of it. He also was a big Mitch Miller fan, remember the white bouncing ball that went with the lyrics? Boy, you stirred up some memory's there.
I love the episode where Barney accidently captures the escapee and the whole town is all excited for him. Andy tells him to take the afternoon off but Barney just never knows when another beast may come down from the forrest.
"Yea, but he might have been injured, He might have been killed".
Welcome to all the newcomers.

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16663: Well, Fast Gun Fife, I'm close to Johnson City, TN, myself! What's the name of the barbecue place? I might have to come over that way sometime soon. Mavis is close to Johnson City, too.

November 13, 2003 - Msg 16664: Saw the reunion show on 11 Nov 03, it was GREAT!!
Hank from Kathleen Georgia

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16665: I love any episode with the Darlings. "She usually takes eleven hatfuls." and "Aw, Pa, cain't I just look at the purty man?" "Go ahead sheriff, shoot him, ya got a legal right." "Make sure you come early, it's treacherous crossing the Robert E Lee bridge after dark."

Also, I love the song, "Oh my Barney,Oh my Barney,
had a jail and couldn't lock it. Had one bullet for his pistol, had to keep it in his pocket."

There are so many wonderful things to remember about the show. I think if I had to pick my favorite episode, it would likely be Rafe Sings. Beside the fact that Rafe had quite a set of pipes on him, the episode showed the acceptance that Ron Howard spoke of on Tuesday night. TAGS is a gem and there is no two ways about it.

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16666: Oh, my! Where to begin? You folks are just so dear. All the caring and sharing that goes on here is just priceless, and that's what lay at the heart of Mayberry.

Favorite episode? Now that would be difficult. I love "Dogs, dogs, dogs" - (Boy, giraffes are selfish!), and "Man in a Hurry", and the one with Poor Horatio, and well, just all of them. I think, though, if I had to choose one favorite scene, it might just be from the episode shown today. When Luke Jensen leads that cow, with her shoes on, out of that barn I have to hold on to my chair! The way that cow walks, picking her feet up and slapping them down, just has me howling. Even the music is perfect. I must have seen it a hundred times or more, but it's still hilarious. It's not in the same class with all the great writing and comic genius of so many other scenes, of course - it's a class unto itself. A sight gag, slapstick, whatever you want to call it, it's just plain funny! That whole episode is great, with the little serious moments, and the sweet scene with Barney and Andy. I noticed they cut part of that out in what they ran today. Barney returns to the farm house to stay with Andy, but they cut out where Barney tells Andy he recalls another "hairbrained idea" that Andy had once - that of making him (Barney) his deputy. Kinda clutches you right here!

OK, off to bed. Have a lovely weekend, everyone. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

P.S. Thanks, fun girl!

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16667: A VERY IMPORTANT PRAYER REQUEST: My younger daughter has had an emotional breakdown and was admitted into the local hospital yesterday. One of her new friends (and believe me, the term "evil companions" suits to a tee) with whom she has been living, and who we know is responsible for the vast majority of my daughter's stress has placed herself as my daughter's "caretaker" and is trying to convince my daughter to come back home with her rather than get the help she so desparately needs. My daughter is so weak that she allows this evil manipulation and the doctor says he can't do anything about it if it is what my daughter wants since she is still mentally competent. Please pray that this "evil companion" be routed out of my daughter's life and that she received the Lord's strength to see the the Truth about her "friend's" true intentions.

~Clara~ in much need of friends' prayers
PS Tomorrow I go to see my gynocologist...I will update you all on that as well. Like I said before, when it rains it pours but, this is turning out to be a doozy of a storm!

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16674: Good morning porch, how is everyone? It sure is cold on my porch 28 degrees and windy as all get out. I sure could use some more of that cider hint hint. Had a rough night here last night, most of you know I'm a volunteer fire fighter and emt on our little dept, and we had a 16 year old boy get killed in a car wreck. The driver was ok, but the other one didn't make it. They think he was thrown from the sunroof. It was about a half mile from my work place, and I heard it happen. They were both 16, and drinking and drugs were not a factor in it. Just driving way too fast. Anyways please saya a prayer for the families of both boys, not only the one who died, but the other boy as well.. he'll probably never get over last night. Thanks friends love ya's all--Salty Dog

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16675: The porch sure seems nice and full. Romeena, I noticed they cut that heartwarming scene from the show last night, too. I had just been waiting for that one and swoosh it was gone! (It all happened so fast) I can't believe the scenes they choose to cut...like the septic tank one for instance. Actually, I guess there's NO scene that we'd want to miss. That's the beauty of those Columbia House tapes. They have scenes I forgot about and some I don't remember EVER seeing before. Well, just wanted to say a "hey" this morning.

Warren - my friend at LCCS is Dr. Estep. We went to college together and he is a huge Star Trek fan. Isn't your wife into Star Trek (I thought I remembered you mentioning that.)
It's payday today!! And tomorrow, hopefully it will be goat selling day!! Have a family traveling down to see the girls for sale. Fingers crossed because some of these girls need top go before babies arrive.
Well- -
I think I'll put on a pot of Great Northern beans, put some ham in there and make some cornbread. . .supper will be ready about 6PM. Mind your manners and you all can come.

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16682: I have really enjoyed reading all these wonderful posts about the SHOW. I missed it. Can you believe it? I had it on my calendar and everything! But we had to go to a funeral visitation. Fun girl, I'll be emailing you and taking you up on a copy of the show. Thanks. Emma, A friend of mine just suggested books by Janice Holt Giles to me. Before that I hadn't heard of her. Mrs. Wiley, I know a cut I hate. Sometimes they cut out when Andy and Barney go to the Darlins and the boys are snoring and snoring and they turn them all over. That is a funny scene. I agree, where is our Tom? Did he move to WV? Welcome Steve and Hank and Rob McDaniel, and Lester McGill and anyone else who is new to the porch! Lester, email Fun Girl for a copy of the show. See her message #16619 above and send her postage.

November 14, 2003 - Msg 16683: Nope, Ky moonshiner, I'm sorry to say that by all accounts, Rafe (fine set of pipes) Hollister never made a tape. His real-time name was Jack Prince, and if he ever recorded anything, nobody knows about it. Pity, he really had a great voice. Thank goodness, our friend Gomer made several records, though, and I have most of them. He did a Christmas album that will be going into my car's CD deck in a couple of weeks.

wvduncans, I'm not sure it was ever specifically mentioned on the show, but I've always had the impression that Thelma Lou was a secretary, or maybe a book keeper. Guess she just seems the "office" type.

Clara, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter's situation. How old is she? Obviously, she has adult status, or you wouldn't be having the problem with the "friend." You might talk with the nursing staff about setting up some strict visiting hours, in order to limit the time this person has with her. Of course, this would limit your time, too, but it might be a good trade-off. At least with very limited visiting time, it would be justifiable for you to be there at the same time as the unwanted person, and it would certainly put a damper on her controlling tactics. Just a thought....

Well, gotta run, lots of errands to finish this morning, and some more pansies and cyclamen to get in the ground quickly. It's getting cold here, and this may be about the last day that I would want to be outside digging in the dirt! Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
