August 29, 2003 - Msg 15441: Whooooeeee! I just got Sterling's email with some pictures of his rock paintings! They are great! Cutest things you ever did see. I've got to have one - or two, or three, or.....well, who knows? Sterling, do you suppose there's such a thing as fake rocks, that would be lightweight and make the shipping easier and cheaper? I think there would be a problem, though. Like I said in my email, I have the impression that the shape of the rock suggests to you what you want to turn it into, and fake rocks wouldn't have the magic of individual form that real rocks have. Oh well, just a thought.

Will probably be on the porch a few times over the weekend, but just in case - everyone have a wonderful Labor Day. Is there going to be a band concert? The Plum and I will help with the refreshments, if there is. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

HEY CHARLOTTE- Wasn't it you who had got a Miss Julia book? Have ya done any reading on it yet? What do ya think?

homemaker, you and your boy are in my thoughts and prayers. I know how frustrating it can be and you want to help but there is only so much you can do. Well, you can probably do more than me as you are educated and all that. I have a friend who works for the dyslexic insti-tute in Indpls. She said that if we get Kyle tested she could probably put something together for us to work on to help him out. She evaluates testing and then works with the school districts to get these kids help. I don't know that he has dyslexia per say, but definately APD. We have been friends since 6th grade and she used to just run the summer camp for the dyslexic kids, now she is getting into the school aspect. I am thrilled.

Take care friends.

August 31, 2003 - Msg 15455: hey folks. went to my moms tonight as all the neices and nephews were there. on the way in i tripped on a concrete block and busted my mouth good. knocked my top teeth backward and they went into my bottom lip and out the other side. i look a fright. i am typing one handed as the other hand is holding an ice pack on my face. luckily the doctor had just given me a new vicodin script so i have something for pain.

in TKAM scout punches her cousin and her uncle the doctor tells her she will have a very unlady-like scar on her ring finger. i am sure i too will have a lovely reminder of this night. right on my bottom lip. guess i can go out and buy some nice lip sticks and cover it up.

hey asa, i know that loose lips sink ships, but do you reckon fat lips do the same? LOL if so, then i dont reckon i will do rowing with anybody at the picnic....could be disasterous. see, even when in extreme pain my golden sense of humor shines through, LOL possum i think i will have to pass on the BBQ at the picnic, but BDJ, if you happen to have a jug of squeezins on hand, i will bring me a straw and that might not hurt too bad.

August 31, 2003 - Msg 15456: $1000??!? For a goat?? I think I'm in the wrong business. Why, we didn't pay that much for the Plum, and she's a member of the family. These must be some very fancy goats. Reckon they're any kin to Jimmie? My daughter and her former husband raised a few goats for a while, and they ran around $100 each. Cute as could be, but they didn't bring any $1000. I'd really like to see a $1000 goat. Must have gold-plated hooves and horns. (teehee)

I can't get an answer from Sterling, guess he's away from his 'puter on the craft show circuit. Does anyone remember where he's from? He said once, but I forgot. I want some of those rocks, just wondering if he's in driving distance from me. I think I could make a day trip and pick them up cheaper than I could have them shipped.

Just got home from my son's house - went out there and cooked pork chops and gravy for him and his sweet wife, and her parents and another couple. Just happened to get to nuzzle around on that sweet little new baby, too. He's so precious. Big brother seems to be accepting the baby very well, constantly giving him little kisses. So sweet.

We got a frog-strangling rain here early this afternoon. Got some significant standing water, but the landscaper can't fix what he hasn't seen, so I took pictures. I love my digital camera. Now he can see where the drainage needs attention. It's nothing that can't be corrected.

Well, I'm tired, the Plum is ready for a cuddle, and I think I'll turn in. Everyone have a lovely Mayberry Sabbath. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Actually, mouth injuries tend to heal very quickly, if that's any consolation. You take care of yourself now. If you don't smile a lot for a while, we'll understand. Your good sense of humor seems intact, so we'll forgive you for not smiling. It's bound to hurt, for pity's sake! Sugarplum says to tell you to run some carrots through the blender and make a carrot poultice. She seems to think it would help, though I suspect she might just want to clean up the leftovers. --Romeena

Have you had a visit from Count Von Vlecky (Or whatever that name was!)? Yes, Boo, I also, unfortunately got to see the disgusting Madonna kiss. I have a news page as my home page and every time I opened Internet Explorer that day the disgusting thing came up! Role models! I'd hate to think! We don't allow MTV in this house. YUK! Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox. Howdy to Mrs. Wiley, Franklie Flint, and Ellen Brown. Has anyone seen the Five Mile Creek series? Does anyone have them or know where to get them? I have found some places on the Internet but volumes 15 and above run as much as $50! If you've never seen the series, you should. A family rebellion, hmm? Wish I was having or going to one today. Gets a bit lonely around here at times, just me and the Plum. My family has shrunk considerably in the last few years. Both parents gone, no aunts or uncles left, several cousins gone, and the ones who remain all live far away. Both daughters are 4 1/2 hours away, one son way out in Florida, and the youngest son and family are here, but he's out of town so much, I hate to intrude on their time together when he's here. He wouldn't like me saying that, but it's true. My brother works all the time, too, don't see him much. So, it's the Plum and I, against the world. (sniff!) Having you all to share with makes a huge difference, believe me. Sorry for throwing this little pity party. When I think of some of the other folks here who really have reason to be blue, I'm downright ashamed of myself. And now if you'll excuse me, I'll mop up this puddle and go bring in the newspaper. :>)

September 01, 2003 - Msg 15476: Hey Porch,
We just returned from one of our shows. This time we had to bring our 5 year old son with us, because all our usual sitters had other obligations. Bringing a 5 year old anywhere can be risky business. But when you are trying to run a business, it can be downright funny! I had one grandmotherly type woman in our tent looking at one of my husband's prints and she was laboring something fearful over her decision! She held up the print and studied it, held it near a framed piece on the wall, set it back down and studied it, picked it back up, etc. etc. for quite some time. She was really in a quandary, and I was just trying to not interfere with her decision, (I don't think I was made to be a saleswoman!). Finally, my 5 year old says loud enough for her to hear, "Is she going to buy that painting or what?" LOL I about died! She picked it right up, walked over and paid for it! I am not quite sure if she heard him or not, but I wasn't about to ask.

I sure hope Fun Girl is feeling better, and anyone else who may be ailing. Hey to Tom, thanks for the poem, always just the right thing to say!

Romeena, don't be blue! I say come on over and have some hamburgers and potato salad right over here at my end of the porch, anyone else care to join us?

Didn't mean to go all emotional earlier, I guess it's just that it's too quiet around here these days. I can remember not so very long ago, when there would have been 15-20 people here on any given holiday, everyone bringing something, everyone hungry, everyone having fun. Now it's pretty much just me and the Plum most of the time. As the Bible says, "to every thing there is a season." I've entered the season of quiet, I guess, and I'm just not used to it, or even ready for it yet. So, move over, you all. Make room, and will someone please pass me a burger or a hotdog? The Plum brought some carrots to put on the grill, says she heard they're wonderful that way. Guess we'll find out. I brought one of those triple chocolate cakes from Sam's. Friends, I may never bake another chocolate cake from scratch, when I can buy one as good as that. It's so good it'll make you want to slap yore pappy! I just took some extra insulin and ate a slice! There is a bakery on the same side of the street that i like but I can't remember the name. Which places are your favorite?

Will someone please contact TVLand for me and tell them to stop with the color TAGS episodes??!! I have had just about enough of those colored episodes. They just keep repeating the same ones over and over again.

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15482: "Gentlemen, I have an announcement to make. Count Istvan Teleky exists!"

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15483: You're not wrong, Hazel! I'm from Wisconsin.
As Romeena already knows, I didn't do the craft show after all. I guess that means she can buy up all the rocks she wants to!;)
I just wasn't at all prepared for that thing. And after coming back from spending all day in Minnesota Saturday, I didn't really feel up to it anyway. BTW, the Wiggles concert was great and our seats(4th row)were perfect! As I feared, my little one got scared when the louder music started(they had been playing Wiggles music beforehand but it was more in the background)and she just started bawling, poor thing! She did get better though as it went on and even though she didn't want to get down on the floor and dance like other kids were doing, she did watch the whole show intently, and even got brave at the end and waved to them and blew them kisses!
One neat part was when they asked if anyone was having a birthday, and we had brought a sign that said it was Kai's birthday(her birthday is actually later this month, but they wouldn't be around then), so they sang "Happy Birthday" to her, another kid whose parents also made a sign, and to anyone else who was having a birthday. And at that one point they sang, "...Happy Birthday, dear...Katelyn, Kai, and anyoneelsewho'shavingabirthday."
I just think it was neat that they mentioned her name! My wife had really done her homework on the Wiggles messageboards where she got a lot of suggestions about what to bring to the show, like bringing a rose for the Dorothy the dinosaur. Some of the Wiggles come down and collect them so that was kind of exciting getting to meet one of them even though the one who collected ours was a guy who was standing in for one of the actual Wiggles who was having a hernia operation so he wasn't on this leg of the tour. And even though they tell the kids that the dinosaur likes to eat the roses, I've heard that they actually send them to children's hospitals in the area, so it is for a good cause.
Anyway, we all had a very good time!

I think we may have the same homepage, Charlotte Tucker. I saw that same disgusting kiss pop up everytime I got online also. I am another person who has been totally turned off to MTV. I used to like it when they actually played videos, but now it is just mostly filth.
Thank God for TvLand! Even those color episodes are way better than anything they would show on MTV, wouldn't you agree Boo?! :)
Well, have got to go.
Have a nice night!

But no use in doing it now. She did put me on antibiotics tho.

Just for a laugh: right after I fell my five year old niece came into the room and checked me out and went over to her mom and said, "Mom, I wanna get some Billy Bob teeth." I just had to laugh. Kids are brutally honest, but not out of meaness. I guess they just call em the way they see em.

Gonna go for now. I am a sight folks. I feel like my lip weighs about 15 pounds. But I'm NICE, REAL NICE.

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15485: I wish the goats did have a little gold on them. . .and Boo, we raise Boer goats and TX is the hot bed for these babies. Although the auction was in KY, these goats were from Mountain Home, TX and trucked in for this auction. A few years ago, Boers were raised only in South Africa and some people in TX with some big bucks brought in the embryos. So the whole thing started with that. The better the pedigree - the better price you get for the goat. And yes, these goats had pedigree. We have a good pedigree on our goats but we want to enhance it so that we can produce a good show goat. And a good eating goat. We sold babies at a week old for $200 and the people had to bottle feed them.
My it is raining, raining, raining here! In the new building that I am in, I am on the second floor but at ground level. So I can touch the grass just by opening my window. I sure hope it doesn't flood into my room.

Sterling, glad to hear you enjoyed the Wiggles. My daughter seems to be getting tired of them (thank you!).

Well, just checking in and having my green tea (I gave up coffee two weeks ago and haven't missed it).

Homemaker, I think I have asked you this before but are the goats for eating or do folks raise them for their coats? By the way, I don't think I have ever seen a Boer goat in my travels in Texas. I have only seen small goats. Are they still pretty rare?

Gotta go...

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15490: And this just in: Just got back from the dentist and he says that we will just have to wait and see if I loose the front teeth. I don't think that had even occured to me. I will go back next Thursday and see what he has to say.

Later folks,

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15491: Oh Fun Girl, I am so sorry to hear that! You poor dear. My 19 year old son knocked out an eye tooth a couple years ago, and then last year he knocked out both his front teeth, (one of which had a root canal from the last episode!). I can definitely sympathize with you. I hope you don't lose them and that everything works out o.k.

How about a late afternoon snack of some banana bread? Y'all have a great evening!

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15493: Hey, Boo! I will very likely be in Fredbg that weekend as well. Go to this website, and check out "The Glockenspiel." http://www.fredericksburgtheater.org/season.htm That's a presentation of the Fredericksburg Theater Company. My daughter is a part of the company, and does a little bit of everything. She acts, does lights, costumes, scenery - whatever it takes to put on a show. In this one, a musical group of which she is a part, will be performing. Their name is "Piano, Silk and Satin." She is also in charge of promotion and public relations, and has been really putting the theater company on the map lately. If you think you'd like to see the show, let me know and I'll have her reserve some tickets for us. What fun!! Oh, and I'll bet that's Dietz's Bakery you were asking about. They have good stuff! I like the Christmas Store myself, and usually enjoy Rebecca's as well. I have two favorite places to eat - The Peach Tree, which is a tea room near the HEB grocery, about a block or two off of Main Street, and the Herb Farm. Can't give directions, but I can get to it. Very neat place, they sell all sorts of plants and things, and serve a knock-your-socks-off lunch as well.

Fun Girl, my teeth are aching just reading about your woes. You poor dear! If those teeth were loosened but not completely evulsed (knocked out), there's a fair chance they'll reimplant. My son knocked one of his teeth completely out, it went rattling across the gym floor and he took it to the ER with him. The doc just pushed it back in the socket (ooh, ouch!) and it did reimplant, at least for a while. I think it lasted about four years, then finally had to be removed. The difference in his and yours is that your teeth (we hope) still had nerve tissue intact since they weren't completely out.

Mary Wiggins, I'd love a slice of that banana bread, thank you. I just delight in the goodies shared here on the porch, because they don't bother my blood sugar one bit!

My landscaping has hit a serious snag, because of all the rain. Never thought we'd have that problem! Now that I have a sprinkler system, it's raining cats and dogs. If I'd known it worked like that, I'd have put the system in years ago! Anyway, it's just a bit too wet to work back there, when you're standing in mud up to your ankles, and water is flowing in a stream toward the back fence.

Well, The Plum is hungry and so am I, so guess I'll rustle us up some grub around here. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

September 02, 2003 - Msg 15494: Sterling, do you mind telling me where in WI you are? I'm in WI also. If you prefer not to post it publicly, email me at methey@cltcomm.net if you will--who knows, we might be close enough to you and yours to have a chapter meeting sometime! September 03, 2003 - Msg 15495: Oh Fun girl, what else can go wrong!? You poor dear. But I, too, have a success story about a friend's daughter who knocked out 4 front teeth in a basketball game last year and all 4 are still in. She had just got her braces off when she lost them! Hers, like Ro's son's, had fallen completely out I believe and they pushed them back in. Makes me hurt just thinkin' about it. I pray you don't lose your teeth. Hey to Elinora Poultice and Alyce. Boo, my little girl is 11. She's the one who was diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2 but has proved that diagnosis wrong over and over. However, she still struggles socially and with learning. But she's precious. She sort of lives in her Get Smart world. No dolls for her birthday. She prefers briefcases, handcuffs, and things that lock!
Have a great day!

September 03, 2003 - Msg 15496: I am thinking positive about the teeth. I have had alot of problems with my teeth and in the back of my mind I have always just figured I would end up with dentures by the time I was 60. So, I guess I would handle it alright if I did end up loosing them. I ain't a foo-foo girl or vain or none of that. I guess God gave me what I have and if He sees fit to let me keep it, fine and if not, then that's fine too. Of course, I may feel different if they actually do come out, but I am feeling pretty sure they won't.

Good day to ya all.

September 03, 2003 - Msg 15500: Morning everybody! It's another steamy day here in South Texas.

Ro, I tried to email you twice but they both came back undelivered. In the email I told you that I have been to the Glockenspiel December before last and really enjoyed it. Baby girl was only 4 months old and it was very cold that day (20 degrees when we got up that morning). It warmed up during the day and we had a very nice time listening to the locals perform. There was also a small Christmas market and booths selling german food. They had a nice Christmas Tree forrest, too. I sure hope we can get together. We will iron out the details and make it happen!

Guess what my eight year old did today, charlotte?? He emptied the dishwasher and filled it without being asked. Sounds like he and your daughter have something in common!

Well, better go take care of the kiddies.

September 03, 2003 - Msg 15507: Well, Boo, for cryin' out loud! Why won't those emails go through? I recently upgraded my Netscape to 7.1, and it has a stricter spam filter, but I would think it would recognize your address. It's also supposed to "learn" what addresses are acceptable to me. When it's in doubt, it puts a little icon next to the email. If I delete it with the icon in place, then the next time it won't let that one through. If I delete the icon, then the next time it recognizes it as acceptable to me. Well, something like that, anyway. All I can suggest is to try again. You'd think that with your address in my address book, it would recognize you as a friend. All I can say is, these blasted spammers and virus-generators are making life difficult for everyone. Wish they'd all catch a virus for sure and go away somewhere to recuperate.

I'm going to have a real fountain (a very small one)in my back yard! My landscaper friend and I worked on planning it today. Rather than buy a ready-made one, I'm going to create it myself (with help), out of some well-chosen rocks. Mr. Landscaper will work out the hydraulics, pump, etc., and I'll chip out the proper pools and channels in the rocks. What fun!

Well, guess I'll mosey on home. Sugrplum is ready to settle down and cuddle a bit, and I think there's a special about pandas on TV. Have a great day tomorrow, friends. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

September 03, 2003 - Msg 15508: Charlotte-I think that you won't be too lost if you don't read the first one first. She kinda explains the situation again in the second book, so you can understand it. Go ahead and give it a whirl. If ya have any questions, I'll be sitting here rocking. Just ask!

I think Miss Julia Takes Over is my FAVORITE so far anyway. Get ready for a good belly laugh.

September 04, 2003 - Msg 15513: Hey all, its your ol' buddy, Jimmy The Goat. Sorry I've been away so long, but I've been as buy as a one armed paper hanger...Let me tell you whats been going on.
Now ya'll might remember, a while ago, your Goat met up with a certain Manicurist right here on this very porch. We began exchanging emails and phone calls, and it rolled from there. Our first date was in...MT.AIRY! Thats right, Mt.Airy, under the watchful eyes of Andy, Barney and Mr.Russel Hiatt (Floyd's City Barbershop.) Friends let me tell you, she was more beautiful than I imagined, and what a great place for a first date! Long story, short, we've been together ever since. I am truly blessed to have her in my life.
The reason I'm sharing this with you, is because today is our 2 month anniversary! If It wasn't for the porch, and you fine folks, we'd have never met. Thought ya'll would like to know. I also want to take this time to tell my Manicurist, here and now that her Goat loves her very, very much, and Happy Anniversary! In the words of Barney Fife, "You're the only girl I love!" :)

Thought I'd let Boo & Ro know that my daughter is still hanging in there. Her bloodwork shows NO toxemia, they are saying she has warning signs of preeclampsia.Main thing is she is swelling so much! She is home & we are monitoring her with blood pressure (good) and diagnostic test strips for protein. Her protein is still at 1+. We know that if it goes higher,to get her to hospital right away.I feel like everything is going to be alright-we are doing all we can to take care of her at home. At least she's not sitting there not knowing-she can check herself. They are now putting her at 33 weeks.I think she is further along, but whatever. They want to get her to 34 weeks and then see what they need to do. I'll keep y'all posted. How big would the baby be at 33-34 weeks? Don't want her to be too tiny and be at risk for problems.Appreciate all the help,Porch nurses! Love to all!

September 05, 2003 - Msg 15534: Glad your daughter is doing ok, Possum! And congrats to Jimmy the Goat and Manicurist on their 2 month anniversary; may you have many more months together, turning into years!

I had the same problem as Boo has had with email coming back, Ro. But it only happened once, and it did go through the second time.

Hey, what's the idea of it getting colder?! It seems like right when the calender changes to Sept it automatically gets colder and turns into fall, at least around here. I was just getting used to summer!:)
Have a nice day everyone!

September 05, 2003 - Msg 15535: Hey everyone, the Goat's back. Geez, so much news going on. Just want to tell ya'll that your in my prayers, and I hope everyone's having a good day.
Thanks for your kind words on the anniversary. Now ya'll know 2 of the reasons for me posting about our anniversary. One, was because I wanted tell the world what a great gal the Manicurist is, and two, to share the news with ya'll because this is where I met the love of my life. This brings me to something else I'd like to share, and that is advice to any single people out there.
Friends if you're single and hating it, like I was, my advice is to hang in there. I can't tell you how long I had to wait to meet the Manicurist, but boy she was more than worth the wait, let me tell you! I never lowered my standards, oh, I thought about it...many times! But I didn't, and I met her, in of all places, right here on the front porch! So, if you're single hang in there, do what you enjoy doing, like TAGS and Mayberry days, or whatever and have no worries...you'll meet someone. For every Barney there's a Thelma Lou and for every Floyd the Barber, there's...there's...well you get the point.
You know...upon reading my last posting...ours is a pretty heartwarming story isn't it? The first date was in MT.Airy and all...pardon me for saying it, but darn, that would make a pretty good story. How come no one in MT.Airy is picking up on this? :) Someone should do a story on us...then we could get married right there in Mt.Airy...at Mayberry Days...Andy could marry us, maybe...well he married Charlene, after all. It's only fitting...the reception could be at the Snappy Lunch. Picture it...instead of one of those stale wedding cakes, we could have a little bride and groom, on a giant pork chop sandwich...Wow! Thats cool...Of course ya'll are invited when it happens, but you'll have to bring your own mulberry squeezins.

Jimmy the Goat

September 05, 2003 - Msg 15539: Hey, Porch!

Sorry to have been gone so long. After we got back from vacation, all kinds of things started happening. My daughter who is expecting in January, started getting sicker than usual and I took the kids for a week and was also trying to help her out... boy, you can't rest a minute with those kids! Then my other daughter went into the ER with a mysterious pain... she's okay, but wasn't feeling well for a few days. Then, my SIL came down with viral meningitis and that sure scared us. He was so sick so once again I took the kids so he could rest when he got back from the hospital. Then, my kid's grandfather took a turn for the worse and had to be hospitalized soooo I been babysitting the kids again so my daughters could visit him in ICU. I tell, I'm surely no spring chicken anymore... I'm a worn out old autumn stewing hen!

Say, does anyone of you medical specialist.. those of you who know about the "Petula Abundalla", larninx, and all.... know how accurate those ultrasounds that detects the baby's gender are? Just wondering if we should put much stock into it and actually prepare for what they say my daughter's baby will be.

Hugs and prayers to all... missed ya all! I'll try to catch up on reading the posts but, I think I am waaaay behind so, just remember you are always in my prayers.

~Clara~

September 05, 2003 - Msg 15540: My Stars!! We have witnessed an actual proposal (didn't we??)and she said yes! How exciting, and I definitely agree that someone having some say in Mayberry Days should pick up on that story. I declare, I think I'm going to cry. (Snifff!!)

Clara, I think we need to say an incant against bad luck for you and yours. Good incants start out like this: "Dear Lord....." and everyone can fill in the blanks in their own way. The same incant format will work for Possum's daughter, for Fun Girl, and for Alyce and for anyone else that needs some special help right now.

I'm sorry some of you are having trouble with my email - can't imagine why. If all else fails, use the same front part, only use @aol.com, and I'll eventually find it. I don't check AOL every day, but I'll try to be more consistent since folks might be using it.

Whoooeeee! Friends, I just got my rock frog and his rock lilypad from Sterling and it's about the cutest little thing you ever saw. It's going to have a place of honor on the fountain that's going in as part of my new landscaping. Cute, that's what it is, just really cute! Thanks again, Sterling!
Now I've got to go chisel out some depressions in some rocks to make little pools for the birds in my fountain. I chose small boulders with little hollows already present, but I'm making them a little deeper so the birds can wade into water deep enough to bathe in. This is going to be one critter-friendly yard when my landscaper friend and I get through. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena
