March 18, 2003 - Msg 12690: Just had a most frustrating afternoon. Bought extensions for the mouse and keyboard for the computer and spent the afternoon trying to figure out why the keyboard wouldn't work. After hours of being online with Hewlett Packard, it finally dawned on me to try the extension for the mouse on the keyboard and see if it would work then. Well SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE, it did. Boy do I feel like a dunder head. I have a defective extension. Boy what a relief. I was so frustrated that I thought about buying another keyboard with a longer cord, that's just how frustrated I was.

Trevor got the dvds and wouldn't ya know, his dvd player is on the fritz. He was getting the part yesterday to fix it. I will give a full report when he reviews our fav show.

Glad you finally figured out what the trouble was.
Any of y'all watch "American Idol"? I love music,so I try to catch it when it's on. I just love that Clay Aiken! That little Carolina dude can sing! So what if he doesn't fit the mold of what a singing star should look like-and just what IS that anyway? He's a sweetheart! I got a kick out of mean old Simon (the judge)when he told one contestant that she was such a good country singer that she ought to replace "that girl in the Dixie Chicks!" Yep,Natalie-ya reap what you sow girlie!
Gonna go watch the last bit of "Idol" and then hit the old ironing board.Y'all have a good evening!

March 18, 2003 - Msg 12696: Hi Tom! Hope you are doing ok.

I took baby girl to the dr and she said it was just a virus, no strep. She had a little rash on her tummy and chest today. Still has a fever but was better today. She is cranky, though, and won't let me out of her sight! I am pooped.

wsz She is on my lap now and typed those first three letters. Better go. Oh, I love American Idol and especially that boy from NC. For some reason, though, the Fox channel keeps going out about half-way through the program. It is very frustrating. I saw the first half but not the second.

Gotta go tend to the little one! Goodnight!

Boo

March 19, 2003 - Msg 12697: Boo, that baby girl of yours is a genius! I think what she was typing was an abbreviation for "want some Zantac". Well, no wonder she's cranky! Little dear has heartburn.
As for American Idol, I only like watching the beginning auditions. they can be really funny. After that I think it gets kind of boring. My wife is an avid viewer of that show though, and that's the only reason I see the beginning auditions, because if she didn't have it on, I don't think I would have even watched that part.
Have a good night!

March 19, 2003 - Msg 12698: Hi, everyone! TOM! It's so good to hear from you, and as usual you have presented us with a lovely poem, one that's just so appropriate, as Spring is trying to break through and sweep Winter away. How could you ever think we wouldn't miss you??

Boo, I'm glad there was no strep in baby girl's little body. It's great to know for sure, and have that peace of mind. These kids, they sure do keep us bothered and bewildered sometimes.

Did anyone else watch the hour-long "Cell Dogs" program on Animal Planet tonight? What a wonderful idea it is. The plan involves rescuing dogs that are scheduled to be put down, dogs that are considered unadoptable because of behavioral problems. These dogs are then paired up with inmates in some of our nation's prisons. It seemed to me that most of the inmates were lifers, and many were former residents of Death Row, whose sentences had been commuted for some reason. The interviews with the inmates were very moving, and you could really see it in their eyes - the change that had come into their lives through their dogs.

The dogs are not with them forever. The goal is for the inmate to socialize and train the dog and modify its behavior so it can be adopted by someone on the outside, usually a family. It was touching to watch a convicted killer fighting back tears as he handed his dog over to its new owners, and even more touching to see his joy as he was given a new dog to work with, that very afternoon. They all said things like "my dog has made me a new person", or "having this dog has taught me how to love for the first time in my life." They have the total responsibility for the dog - feeding, bathing, grooming, training, keeping it healthy, whatever it takes. There is a program going in some women's prisons as well, it's not just the men. Anyway, I applaud whoever thought this up. It means freedom and a new life for the dogs, and gives a meaning to life for the convicts. A wonderful idea, definitely a win/win situation, and that's the best kind!

He needs to be a little more tactful with his responses though. I was surprised Natalie Maines (lead singer for the Dixie Chicks) made such a stupid comment. Maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't you be supportive of your country and the men who serve it? Many men died so that Mrs. Maines and the rest of "those" Hollywood celebs could have the right to speak freely. I lived in Los Angeles for 10 years and worked as an investment consultant for many actors. They would tell me that they were afraid it would damage their careers if they didn't act as liberal as possible for the media. Maybe that's what Maines was thinking. Who knows. I've heard about that kind of stuff going on in tinsle town Ed. I don't mind folks not wanting war, heck I doub't anyone wants war. March 19, 2003 - Msg 12717: Asa, all the posts were bold for awhile but now they are back to normal (?).

Ed, I can't understand why celebrities feel like they have to be liberal. Why is that? Really, aren't most regular people in this nation pretty family-oriented, God fearing people? Just wondered what you thought.

Ro, I agree with your statements regarding the Dixie Chicks. They have never really been known to be exactly "politically correct". I mean, what about that "Earl" song?! I have never really been a Dixie Chick fan although I did like that song they remade that was originally done by Fleetwood Mac (the landslide one). I have never been a fan of country music and kind of cut my teeth on Rolling Stone albums (I had older siblings). I mostly listen to Contemporary Christian music and some classical now. I guess my gut is about full of the idiot celebrities and don't find many redeeming lyrics in most of their songs. No offense to anyone.

I recently developed an embarrassing taste for "Cowboy Music" and have been listening to a CD by a group called, The Sons Of The San Joquin (spelling?). Anyone ever heard of them? They do songs about herding cattle and about San Antonio, etc.. cheesy, but I like it for some reason.

Well, better go. Dr. Phil is coming on...

March 19, 2003 - Msg 12719: Hi Porch pals, I think celebs are so liberal thinking because they know what it's like to have EVERY'THANG and assume that everyone knows that feeling too and won't want to loose it. March 19, 2003 - Msg 12723: Hey again all, Asa, I am going to tell you and the porch something about "good ole" Hollywood. Show business is exactly that...a business. It's a cut throat business at that. Actors are basically fighting each other for any little part there is. You have 187,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild (you have to be a SAG member before you can work as an actor). Out of those 187,000 actors (this is not counting the 250,000 who want to be actors and who are trying to get into the Guild)only half a percent make about $25,000 a year. Now factor in that less than the remaining half of THOSE actors make more than that (your hundred thousand dollar a year actors) those are the ones that have regular small parts on TV or numerous commercials. Now...factor in that less than HALF OF THOSE make more than that and, you guessed it, those are the lucky individuals you see up on the big screen. The studio heads who run your big studios(Paramount, Warner Brothers, 20th Century, Universal, etc. and the five or ten branches of the big 3 DREAMWORKS is an example...as well as FOX,NBC,ABC,CBS) are extremely liberal. And liberals only higher other liberals (the studio heads are mostly Jewish,Gay,or minorities which some believe is the basis for the liberalism). Actors know this and if they speak their true political beliefs, then the studio liberals will fire them and they will be black listed from Hollywood forever. Other actors (and the studio heads know this as well) realize that there are thousands of starving actors out there waiting in the wings to take their place. So the celebs act liberal so they can keep working. Remember that 95% of all celebs are jerks anyway. They are cruel, arrogant, self centered people. They are not like their characters on TV. Go to dinner with them and watch how they treat people. When you make 20 million a picture you think you're invulnerable. Sorry to take up the whole page but I hope this sheds a little light for Asa and all who are interested in SHOWBIZ! Take care all and have a great Mayberry kinda afternoon.

March 19, 2003 - Msg 12724: Wow, Ed, thanks for the education. I watched Mommie Dearest the other day and also saw a biography on Kirstie Alley and all I could think about was how on earth these self-centered, arrogant actors could possible adopt children. How dreadful for the kids. I guess if you have enough money someone will sell you children. Michael Jackson proved that.

Ed, can you tell us anything about the 5% who are good guys? I only know one celebrity (Kind of a celebrity) and he is a nice guy. He isn't really a celebrity but he had a movie made about him and he is a preacher now. Do you know Nicki Cruz (The Cross And The Switchblade)? He's a nice guy.

March 20, 2003 - Msg 12737: Wow, you really are a truckload of information, Ed Sawyer! I guess that's why a lot of actors say they don't want their kids to go into show business, huh?! But since we basically pay those studio head's salaries with our ticket sales and in buying from the advertisers, we should be able to take Hollywood back from the liberals, or at least put it on a more equally conservative road. More Mayberry, less Will&Grace type of shows. I think that would be nice!

Just would like to say I hope that this war is a short one. The best possible scenario would be that they take out(if they haven't already) Saddam and his higher-ups, and the other Iraqi's revolt against whatever's left. That would make this one short conflict and a major victory on the war against terrorism and for President Bush, not only politically, but also due to all the American and allied soldiers, and the innocent Iraqi civilians whose lives would be spared.
I only hope it turns out that way.
Prayers for all those with loved ones in harms way.
Have a good night.

March 21, 2003 - Msg 12772: Good morning porch, Ya'll look great. Boo, you ask me about a few actors that are nice people so I will tell you the few that I've met or worked with that were. George Clooney is a very nice man, Barry Watson (the oldest son on 7th Heaven), Tom Cruise, Kim Cattrall, Jane Seymour, Rod Steiger (liked to yell but that was his way of saying he liked you, bless his heart. He'll be missed), Mark Wahlberg, John Travolta (nice but always passing our pamphlets trying to recruit you to Scientology) and speaking of Scientology Priscilla Presley is very sweet. But the most friendly, polite, number one nice celeb has to go to Chuck Norris. If you ever see him out, feel free to go and speak to him. He's the best. I'm sure I've probably forgotten a few but not many. These are the ones that really stood out in my mind as being nice. I hope everyone is doing well. I hope and pray for all of our soldiers. And hope and pray they stay safe and come back home soon. God bless us and GOD BLESS AMERICA. Take care all.

March 21, 2003 - Msg 12776: Hey guys, nope 12765 wasn't me!! It must have been an interloper. LOL I heard from my friend Kris today. He is still in New Jersey, and will ship out for Iraq in two weeks. So he is doin fine now. Thank God. I hope you all are doin ok tonight. Stay safe and remember our troops. Love yas all. --Salty Dog

March 21, 2003 - Msg 12777: That was no interloper, that was me! Just curious about who Trevor was.

So glad to see Vicks back in the conversation!

Hope everyone is well tonight. It is a beautiful evening here in South Texas. My baby girl is better (no fever) but she sure has been as mean as a wildcat (guess she still feels bad). She started throwing things in anger yesterday! She has been screaming when something happens she doesn't like. Ok, experienced Moms, what do I do with her. She is about 20 months old. Do I ignore the fits (which is what I have been doing- if she is laying in the floor screaming I just let her) or punish her in some way? This is new to me because my first didn't throw fits. It's funny because she looks like an angel with her big blue eyes and blond curls but boy, she can really come unglued. I put her in the shower with me tonight and she went crazy, screaming and started clawing me. I think she got scared so I put her out after a quick wash. Heavens, what am I going to do with her? She knows how to obey because I taught her not to go in the street and all it took was one little swat on the behind. any advice would be appreciated.

Well, Ed, I can picture the celebrities you mentioned as good people, especially Chuck. Thanks for the info. I guess you have never met Andy or you might of mentioned it?

Better go take care of some things before bed. Love to all...keep those good thoughts.

Boo

March 21, 2003 - Msg 12778: Hey, friends! Ed, you probably didn't know him, but I've read that one of the nicest men you'd ever want to meet in show business was Morey Amsterdam, who played Buddy Sorrell on The Dick Van Dyke Show. What I've read said that he was kind and had old-fashioned manners, was very cooperative and easy to work with, and was generous with his time as well as his money. Sure fits with the impression he gave in his role as Buddy.

Boo, you do have a problem. A 20-month old is pretty young for discipline, though it can work at times, as you found out. Temper fits are about the hardest behaviors to correct, as I recall, but I do have a couple of suggestions. My oldest daughter was prone to tantrums, and when she was about two, she threw one and just happened to get on my last big nerve. She was flat on her back in the dining room, screaming and kicking her feet, much like Opie did when he was trying to get Andy to give him his allowance for doing nothing. I happened to be clearing the table, and had a half-full glass of ice water in my hand. Somehow, that glass just tipped over, and the water went full in her face. Such spitting and sputtering you never saw, but the screaming stopped, she got up and marched her dripping little self into her bedroom, and that was the last tantrum we saw.

The other idea comes from my son and daughter-in-law. Their little boy, who just turned two, can throw a real hissy fit at times. My son orders him to go to his room, and he goes, stomping his feet and squealing the whole way. As soon as he enters his bedroom, he stops squalling, turns around and returns to the living room, all smiles, tears still on his cheeks! It's not a permanent fix, and he sometimes goes through his routine several times in an evening, but it stops the current fit, and it's funny to watch. It's like "Shazam!" and here he comes back, a different boy. This sounds like a very possible solution for your baby girl, since as you say, she learned very quickly to stay out of the street.

Aren't little kids wonderful? We had such fun when ours were little, but I have to admit, I'm glad I don't have to do it again. With the grands, I can just enjoy them, try not to spoil them, and give them back to their parents after a while. One of the blessings of age, I guess.

Have a lovely weekend, folks. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12779: Ed, my little Opie "took off" on Walker Texas Ranger at the Talent Show in first grade. He was so durn cute, He had a fringed shirt and cowboy hat and boots and we even drew on a beard and moustache with eyeliner pencil. He got up there and did lip synch to the theme song from the show. He even had hand motions. It was just to darn cute. When he got off the stage, he said, "Man dad, I was scared ta deaf." That was his favorite show before he started watching wrestling regularly.

Went to the store and got some Vicks for the toenail fungus like someone reccommended. Was that you Ro? You know Boo, I always wished that I could have been calm and collected with little Opie when he was in need of some discipline. Kinda like Andy when Opie held his breath and he said, "That's good for the lungs." and then when Opie laid on the ground and threw a tantrum, and Andy said, "Don't get your clothes dirty." Cracks me up.

Did anyone watch the TV Land awards show. I think it has been on several times. Dick Van Dyke sang the words to the theme song from his show and they were written my Morey Amsterdam and they were very positive and upbeat. I will see if I can find them and post them here. We can use all the positive and upbeat we can get around here. Shoot, we can use a whole truck load of positive and upbeat.

Hugs to the porch.

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12780: Good Morning Dears and Honeys. Here's the words to the Dick Van Dyke theme as promised. Hey BDJ, ya ready? A one and a two and a here we go....

"So you think that you've got trouble?
Well, trouble's a bubble,
So tell old Mr. Trouble to get lost.

Why not hold your head up high and
Stop cryin', start tryin
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

When you find the joy of livin'
Is lovin' and givin'
You'll be there when the winning dice are tossed.

As smile is just a frown that's turned upside down,
So smile and that frown will defrost.
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed!"

Short, sweet and to the point. And just like I promised, positive and upbeat all over the place.
Have a good one my friends.

I love you a bushel and peck
A bushel and peck and a hug around the neck
A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap
A barrel and a heap and I'm talking in my sleep
About you, about you

Cause I love you a bushel and a peck
You bet your pretty neck, I do
Doodle, oodle, oodle, doodle, oodle, oodle, doodle, oodle, oodle oo
I love you a bushel and peck
A bushel and peck though you make my heart a wreck
Make my heart a wreck and you make my life a mess
Make my life a mess, yes
A mess of happiness
About you, about you

You bet your pretty neck, I do
Doodle, oodle, oodle, doodle, oodle, oodle, doodle, oodle, oodle oo
I love you a bushel and peck
A bushel and peck and it beats me all to heck
Beats me all to heck and I'll never tend the farm

You bet your pretty neck, I do

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12792: My dad used to sing one song, and it was always in a monotone! It went Does eat oats and lambs eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy, a kid 'll eat ivy too, wouldn't you!
He wasn't much of a talker at all, so it was very strange if you ever heard him sing! And to sing THAT song...!

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12796: Yep, my mom sings the Mare eat Oats song too. I guess her aunt taught her all those old songs. I think they are kinda corny, but I guess in 30-40 years our grandkids will think our music is kinda odd. My mom also used to sing "Lazy Bones sleepin in the sun. How do you ever expect to get your days work done." She would get right in my face and sing it when I was trying to sleep. TICKED me off so bad.
fun girl

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12797: Mary Wiggins, see if this sounds familiar:

Mairsy doats, and dozey doats, and little lamsy divey,
A kiddley divey too, wouldn't you? (repeat)
Now if the words sound kweer,(take that, censor!) and funny to your ear,
A little jumble-y and jivey,
Just say "Mares eat oats, and does eat oats,
and little lambs eat ivy".
Then you repeat the first part.

That was a very popular song in the '30's and maybe early 40's, and my dad used to sing it to me, too. I loved it! The melody is light and happy, wish I could print music notes here.

The "Bushel and a Peck" song was also done by Doris Day (I think) in one of her earlier movies. Very cute.

Prayers for our troops, friends, and may God bless America. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12798: My mom used to sing a song to me that went:

"Where are you going my little one, little one?
Where are you going my baby, my own?
Turn around and your three,
Turn around and your four,
Turn around, your a young girl walking out of the door."

Boy, I just started crying as I typed that. Surprised me. Does anyone know the origin of that song? That's all the lyrics I remember and Mom doesn't remember things since her stroke.

Dad sang a song that went: "Way down yonder on the indian nation, rode my pony on the reservation. Oklahoma is where I belong."
He sang it in a real deep voice and when I was little I called it "The Big Song". Anybody recognize that one?

Later, friends....

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12799: Whoops, how did that happen? I just noticed that I misspelled "your". Should have been "you're"...and I wrote my name twice. I don't think I have been getting enough sleep!

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12800: Hey to the porch!
- Hazel

March 22, 2003 - Msg 12801: Hey, Hazel. Nice to see you. Boo, I recognize both of those songs. The first one also has a verse that goes: "Turn around and you're tiny, turn around and you're grown, turn around and you're a young wife with babes of your own." Something like that. Is that by any chance from "Fiddler on the Roof"? I haven't seen that play/movie in so long, I can't remember, but I think it may be. You know, Mama would be singing it to one of the daughters.

As for the other song: "Way down yonder in the Indian Nation, I ride my pony on the reservation, in the Oklahoma hills where I belong. Way down yonder in the Indian Nation, a cowboy's life is my occupation, in the Oklahoma hills where I belong." I don't think that one came from a movie or anything, I think one of the old-time cowboy singers made it popular - Jimmie Rodgers or somebody like that.

Sure do wish we had some way to print out the melody of some of these songs. I guess we could just type them like this: E-G-G-G-G-G-A-G-E-C (that's "way down yon-der in the Ind-ian na-tion") but you can't get the timing out of that. Anyway, anybody that has a piano, try it and see what you get. They're all naturals, no sharps or flats. I think whoever thought of the way we actually do write music was pretty smart.

Well, off I go. Need a couple of Advil and a soft chair. Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

Hey Fun Girl, I've heard that pickle song(figures, me and my love of pickle juice!). It's from Arlo Guthrie, or one of the Guthrie's, I think there's more than one. Do you remember the next line to that song? It goes, "And I don't want to die." I just want to ride on my motorcy...cle."

Boo,I think the song IS from "Fiddler on the Roof" and it's called "Sunrise,Sunset." It was quite popular back when I was a young possum! My mom used to sing a song to me called "Scarlet Ribbons." She had a terible singing voice, but let me tell you that was the sweetest noise I ever heard when she'd come sit by my bed when I was sick and sing me to sleep.Y'all have started up a good discussion here! Hey Briscoe, what'd your mama jug for ya when you were a wee Darling? Anybody else? Bring on the memories!

We greet thee in song,
Mummers of gladness,
Fall on the ear.
Voices long hushed,
Now hear full notes, prolong,
Echoing far and near.

{CHORUS}
Sunshine awaits for,
The flower that's from seed,
Joy giving incense,
Fall on the air.

Snowdrops and primrose,
Both timidly beam,
Hailing the glad new year.

{BARN}
Balmy in life,
Breathing breezes are blowing,
Swiftly to nature,
New vigor's bestowing.

Oh, how my heart beats,
With rapture anew,
Earth's flower in beauty,
Again feeds my view.

{CHORUS}
Sunshine awaits for,
The flower that's from seed,
Joy giving incense,
Fall on the air.

Snowdrops and primrose,
Both timidly beam,
Hailing the glad new year.
