July 03, 2002 - Msg 7764: Morning Porch! Mavis, my firecracker girl Cassidy will be 13! Maybe we should but our firecrackers together in about 10 years...

Jelsik, Jelsik, my beloved Jelsik. What AM I going to do with you?! I could tell you a real scary ghost story about "My Braves", but your Mamma and Daddies probably don't want you to hear it. Asa, that hotdog story made me laugh so hard! My brother had a large dog (mutt) that would eat anything. Rocks, pine cones, sticks. But he wasn't selfish.

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7765: that is "put" our firecrackers. oh me oh my. ~ Mrs. Wiley

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7766: Oh, OK. I know...y'all are waiting for breakfast!

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7767: Oh my goodness Mrs. Wiley, you got me laughing so hard now I can't hardly stand it. Funny how a little typo can change the whole meaning of something.
Hope ya'll have a great day, and a better weekend.

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7768: Hey Mavis--You're right, dogs, all dogs...Fly a bird through this room and every one of them would point. All went well with the dentist and he did a wonderful job. It was a front tooth so I was kinda worried, but it looks just dandy. Little Opie does kinda like Asa's dog. He just inhales in front of a plate, 'cept he don't hurl and loose it.
Do any of you women folk on the porch listen to country music. Let's take a poll on who the finest looking singer in country is. ***I would like to cast my vote for Trace Adkins!** I used to would have voted for Travis Tritt, but Trace has stolen my heart. Those long legs and that long hair. Wooooowee! That boy twangs my buds better than a pot of boiled ramps. Yeah you can take my Trace Adkins CD....when you pry my cold dead fingers from around it!

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7770: Hey yall getting ready to go to work. 10 hours today and tomorrow. Never as much as even asked me if I had plans for the 4th. Not that I am bitter or anything. I love these furkid stories. My cat loves green pepers with a passion. He will do anything for one. Well FG I like Trace too but, Toby Keith has always been the one to twang my buds. But after seeing that video for Ol Red, I am starting to like Blake Shelton too. That boy makes a purty criminal. So I guess I'll have to vote for 3 of them if thats ok. Hey back atcha Mavis and Miss DB, Asa, Hazel, Mrs W, and whoever else I may have missed. Yall have a safe holiday. I was hoping that Rock and Tom would come home for the holiday but it aint looking like it. See yall later--Salty Dog

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7771: Sorry you have to work on the 4th Salty. Will you get any time off for that later? A cat liking peppers. That's a new one!
Asa, how in the world did Sammy do that?! LOL
I wonder if it's his breed is why he likes hot dogs?
Romeena how scary about Plummy. Bless her little heart. I'm glad she's o.k. I send her some extra little carrots from Rusty and our Little One. {> {> {> {>
Our little weiner dog, was neutered yesterday, and he kept me up all nite for it! Poor little thing cried all nite. My brother did it, and didn't even tell me to give him aspirin. :0 I called him as soon as I thought he was up and told me to give him a 1/8 of a aspirin. I did and the dogs, AngeFan and I slept to NOON! I missed breakfast and everything, but he's feeling much better.
AngeFan got to do some of the cuttin' at surgery time, and is considering becoming a Vet, like Uncle Allen (He's also considering a lot of other things). I felt faint and had to leave. It didn't bother me so I don't know why I felt like that. I've done that before in medical situations. Even visiting someone in a hospital (only that time I DID hit the floor!) And my G'mother use to say that I would be a good nurse! LOL
Prayers for you Mrs Wiley. Just do all you can, and don't worry about the rest. You're just one person and can do so much. My Mom has decided to bid on a job. She hopes she doesn't get it and they'll offer her a retirement package. This is happening to much.
Ya'll have a good Tuesday and remember this is a day that the Lord has made, so rejoice!---Helen

P.S Sometimes I do sign H, but only after a typo I'm correcting, under my own post.

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7772: Mavis, I just tried the web-site, and it's a good-un! I trying the Chevys Garlic Mashed Potatoes tonite. My Hubby has been wanting some.
BTW is the party on for tomorrow?
Thanks Mavis.---(H)elen

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7773: Good afternoon - it sure has been hot! Talked to my daddy today and he and momma are getting ready for the Big Parade tomorrow. They are member of the VFW and auxillary and they want pictures of themselves being on the float. Daddy is 79 and mom will be 78 come August and I will be *(&^&^& that old in just a couple of weeks. I had older parents too when I was born. Just made the baby boomer cut-off.
We have been building fence for the goats (in all of this hot weather), trying to sell a few goats, and even considering selling our horses. We just don't have time for everything and goats seem to be our passion right now. We are definitely not selling our miniature donkey (Shotgun) and my daddy said that we could pasture him there. I think he misses the sound of hearing mules and donkeys "bray!"
(And I even broke a nail working on the fence - darn nail breaking fence!)

WEll - we hope to see you at the parade tomorrow. The local mortuary gives out flags and pinwheels for everyone - I'll be anxious to see if they hand out anything else. It should be a good dose of patriotism. And I'll cry as I see Old Glory paint the sky! "She's a grand ol flag, she's a high flying flag and forever in peace may she wave. She's the emblem of the land I love - the home of the free and the brave. Every heart beats true for the red, white and blue. . .Keep your eye on the grand ol flag!"

July 03, 2002 - Msg 7774: Howdy, friends! The Plum is home!! Still very quiet and subdued, hard to peel her off my ankle, and she can't have any carrots for a week. Helen, I put the ones you brought her aside for when she can have them again.
I've taken tonight off work, because the vet said she has to be watched closely for another 24 hrs. I'm just beginning to realize how close I came to losing her. Thank God for protecting her.
Asa, that hotdog story is wild! How on earth did Sammy manage that? What a story!
Mavis, thanks for your concern, and for that recipe site address. Should be fun.
Salty, your cat eats green peppers? So does the Plum, but a cat? Don't know why that surprises me so, but it does. Don't these little furkids do some strange things sometimes?
Hazel, that's some story, the dog with the stick up his nose. There's a great pun in there somewhere. You know - nose in the air, stuck-up, whatever. Someone wittier than I could have fun with that.
If you all will forgive me, I'm going to skip the party tomorrow and stay home with the Plum. Just a quiet day, with something soft for her to eat and lots of time to rest. Everybody have fun, and bring me back one of those tiny little flags. --Romeena

P.S. Those kitties and doggies who are scared of all the fireworks are welcome to crawl up under my rock!!!

July 04, 2002 - Msg 7781: Happy Birthday America. What a great nation. And Mavis, I really love your thought about God blessing America and the need for us to return the blessing to him. Our nation is under attack, in more ways than one. Not just from terrorists from the outside, but also from people inside who would remove God from our country. We are a truly blessed nation and people. But if we continue to allow our great country to reject God, we will be in serious trouble. That will be a sad day indeed. Sorry, had to drag out the soapbox and wax strong this morning, this is a day for celebration.
Hey N.N. You are quite the stranger around here anymore. Don't be, ok?
Nothing major planned here Ellen Brown, just sit back and count my blessings and appreciate my life. Sorry you have to work today, so does Salty and a few others I reckon. We will keep a plate of food warm for you guys though. Cept the ice cream, don't want that warm.
Howdy Possum, mighty nice of you to share your rock. Bet it's cool under there.
Where has Charlotte Tucker run off to? I thought she would have dropped in to say hi to us or something. I hope she is ok. And Hazel, where oh where is my Hazel?
Glad Sugarplum is doing better Ro. Give her a squeeze from Asa.
Hey to Helen and Angefan. Sounds like a budding vet there. Good deal.
Can't imagine homemaker broke a nail, poor dear. Do we have an incant for broken nails?
Hey to Dixie Belle. I think your a good friend to.
Hey Fun Girl, I thought you was gonna have that tooth pulled so's you could put in a gold one, what happened?
And Mrs. Wiley, what's your plans for the day? Are you coming down off your lofty bed and celebrating with us? You better.:)
Well thats all my ammenities I think. You all have a blessed holiday today, and check in and let us know how yer doing.
God bless America.

July 04, 2002 - Msg 7782: Happy fourth of July!! My youngest one woke up so excited that it was $th of July. He just wished that it weren't so hot! He said "is it always hot on the 4th of July?" He's only 4 ! It was too cute.
We aren't doing much today cept going to the parade and then to Frisch's (something like a Shoney's or a Bob's Big Boy).

God Bless America

Stand beside her
And guide her

July 04, 2002 - Msg 7784: Hey yall, happy 4th of July. Just posting before I went to work. Got 8 hours ahead of me. And I dread putting up with them tourists. Well I hope you all have a wonderful day and enjoy it with your families and furkids too. And whether this nation likes it or not. We ARE under God. I cant believe they would change that just because of 1 person. Oh well I am outta here. Going to work then probably to see the fireworks. I did get invited to a party after work from a friend that felt sorry for me having to work today. But I dont know yet what I am gonna do. Yall be safe and remember what this nation stands for today. July 04, 2002 - Msg 7788: I, for one, had a cool and pleasant day. Some friends took my dad with them to a presentation at their church, so I didn't have to try to provide a "Fourth" event for him. My son had invited me to go to a fireworks spectacular somewhere here in the Metroplex, but I declined and am pretty sure I made a good decision. I stayed home with the Plum, drank iced tea, and watched "Pops Goes the Fourth" on TV. Fantastic music, spectacular fireworks, no sweat and no mosquitoes! Quite a pleasant evening, all in all.
For those of you with sunburns, may I suggest Aloe Vera? If you can get the real thing, that's best. If you don't have a plant (many Texans do), then the commercial preparations work almost as well. For mosquito bites, about all you can do is scratch. Miserable little wretches.
And now, off to bed. So happy to have my little Plum curled up beside me again. Thanks, friends, for your concerns, and your prayers. Little furkids get prayed for, too, and I appreciate that. --Romeena

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7789: Well the 4th was over about 10 minutes ago, and our company just left. I can report that a good time was had by all. We even compared scars from gal bladder surgeries. ("We're no spring chickens anymore Bee.") Now not just anyone can say they did that for their 4th celebration. Just leave it to Fun Girl to be different.

Asa, I think I will put off getting the gold tooth. I think that would make me just too purty.

Hey folks, I was looking for some music that was appropriate for today and I do believe that Arron Tippin's Greatest Hits did the trick for me. And one of my all time favorites is the John Mellencamp Scarecrow C.D. He is pure Americana. We love him here in this part of Indiana, as he is a home grown Hoosier. He is from Seymour, which is about an hour and a half from here.

Hope you all had a glorious fourth. We were surrounded by friends and loved ones and to me that is the best way to spend any holiday. Peace to the porch.
Fun Girl

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7790: Good morning Porch. . .Wake up -just because most of you have the day off doesn't mean you need to sleep in. Just sent hubby off to work - he went in early to beat the heat. LOL The weatherman said little or no relief.
. .hot hot hot! Not much happening today - probably build some more fence once the other half gets home. Asey and Mavis - I went ahead and cut off all my pretty nails. They'll grow back but I was just getting used to having nails again. During the school year - the chalk dust eats them up and keeps them brittle, now it is fencing. A farm girl can't win unless I decide to make em fake. Oh well - they were pretty while they lasted.

Talk to you all later in the morning. . .

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7791: Good morning porch. I spent the evening of the 3rd with Otis and some of his pals from Siler City, so the 4th was spent in bed. Romeena, vinegar works great on mosquito bites. Learned that by living in the big city - mosquito is the GA State Bird. Sorry to hear about the nails hm, at first I thought you were talking about fence nails... but I catch on quick like that. I have to work today, y'all that's offf have a good'un!

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7792: Morning porch, hope yall had a good fourth. Gotta go to work for 5 hours today and then I dont go back until Wednesday. So come 4 this afternoon I am gonna be one happy ol gal. Went to a party last night at some friends of ours. They had a band play and it was pretty cool. Even got the hubby to dance with me twice. Dont know which was more fun, listening to the band or watching the intoxicated ones try to dance. Or was that inarculated...Anyway it was a fun night all the way around. July 05, 2002 - Msg 7795: Salty I thought it was incarcerated? Oh well, I didn't do none of them for the 4th, didn't get no shot, didn't drink from no crock & didn't get locked up in the big house, but I did have a good time, ate some food, watched my boy blow out the sparkler candles on his cake & then ate some more food, watched the fireworks over the river, then off to eat some more food. After that, we went to a pig roast, & guess what I did there?
*Mavis

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7796: Good morning, friends! Think I'll just sit and rest a spell here on the shady end of the porch. Got any lemonade? Not too sweet, though, got to watch the blood sugar. Bettr make that iced tea instead, no sugar at all. Mrs. Wiley, thanks for the tip about the vinegar on mosquito bites. I'll try that. The miserable little pests just love me, can find me in a crowd, and leave big welts where they bite. I hate 'em!
I keep Sugarplum on her heartworm medicine faithfully, because mosquitoes are the vector for heartworms, and since she's always where I am, she's sure to get bitten.
Sounds like everyone had a wonderful Fourth, each in his/her own way. That's what makes this country tick. Well, have a good Mayberry Friday, friends. A recovering Sugarplum says hey! --Romeena

July 05, 2002 - Msg 7797: Well here I am again. Thought I'd check in before I go out to weed the garden. I wonder where Asa is this morning. Asa, I could sure use your help in my garden. You gotta tell me which ones are big weeds and which ones are purty flowers.

July 06, 2002 - Msg 7804: Morning porch. Salty Dog, were you arm wrestlin at that party? That's probably how you hurt your arm. Homemaker, I don't know how you keep up a pace like that. Have fun today, Asa. Don't over-expect. Well, I'm off to go scoop dog... er... residue. I believe that's the word Homemaker used one time when referring to cleaning up after her goats. See ya later.
- Hazel

July 06, 2002 - Msg 7805: Good job Hazel in using the "residue" word. . .trust me, I've pitch forked enough goat residue this year! I can't complain - my tomato plants are looking mighty good! Mavis, my mom has 37 (it may be more) tomato plants out. . .can you say lots and lots of salsa! I am going to buy me one of those new fangled contraptions that peels and seeds the maters with just a twist of the hand. It sure beats de-seeding all of them maters by hand!

We have played two rounds of candy land and go fish today. The boys really like making me "go fish." I kept telling them that I wasn't a gold fish and they would correct me and tell me that it was go fish not gold fish. They were laughing so hard. It was tooo cute. My hubby fell asleep on the couch - to long of a day yesterday or was that this morning!

Ya'll keep rocking!

July 06, 2002 - Msg 7806: Howdy, all! Asa, Sugarplum is fine. Seems to be back to her old self. However, I have to feed her canned food for several more days, and I must say, I don't like what it has done to her, er, "residue". Dry food sure is neater, though I must admit she's loving the canned stuff.
Charlotte Tucker, I'd like to know more about your patio PVC furniture, on behalf of my son and daughter-in-law.
Well, off I go. Sugarplum needs a cuddle, I think. --Romeena

July 06, 2002 - Msg 7807: Hey ya'll, I hope everyone had a good 4th. We had a bbq and pool party at my cousins. We had a lot of fun, but AngeFan didn't get to shoot any of his "own" fireworks. :( We had several of his friends over this evening and cooked out, played soccer, and (his Daddy) shot his "own" fireworks. Lots of fun.
Ro, glad the Plumster is getting better. Don't know what we would do without our little mascot.
Not much rockin' on the porch today. I guess everybody's off doin' their Saturday things. Asa hope you enjoyed your day playin' "pool". Never heard it called that. LOL
Homemaker, hope you got caught up on that rest. That's an awfully long day. I've never heard of those little 'mater doo-dads. Sounds neat.
Mavis, I tried the Chevys garlic mashed potatos from the top secret site. They were good but a little pasty. It's a wonderful site. Thanks.

July 07, 2002 - Msg 7813: almost forgot, homemaker might have to get some of your salsa, we only put out 12 plants this year, but I got all the fixins anyways! Corn looks good, so far, no cows, coons or groundhogs have helped themselves like they did last year!

July 07, 2002 - Msg 7814: You know Mavis, a couple years back a friend of mine and I went fishing on a lake where my mom lives. He is a serious fisherman, but he has banned me from the boat. First I said that I would stay on the dock, but then I got lonesome, so after he got to the middle of the lake, I decided I wanted to be in the boat. Then the whole time he was either unhooking me from tree limbs or getting snapping turtles off my line. Needless tosay that was one of his less productive and stress-free days of fishing. Does anyone know an incant to keep the turtles away?
I learned how to keep my line out of the trees, so I don't need one for that trying to find one for that. But those durn turtles just wont leave me alone. Kinda embarassing! Let me know about that incant.

July 07, 2002 - Msg 7815: Howdy, all. I have good news and bad news. The good news is the rivers and lakes seem to be receding and we're ok. The bad news is my father in law passed away this afternoon. It's been so sad around here. Please keep my husband and his family in your prayers. Love to you all.

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7816: Glad to hear from you Des, my sympathy to your family. Glad you are safe from the floodwaters.

Mavis - why honey I'll send you some salsa - just don't tell Asa, he'll get jealous. He would probably try to clean his bullets with it!

Fun Girl - I just found out that our principal resigned and we are in the middle of a construction project. This will be one interesting year. I am anxious to see if the physical education teacher will be able to kiss up to the new principal like she has to all the rest. She is the only teacher in the building who gets at least 1 1/2 hours of prep time daily. It is not that hard to right lesson plans for jump rope and scooter boards! School sure is fun!

Oh well - that's about all the news, it's past 11 and I've been up since 4:30 so i think I'll slumber off to bed.
BTW - had a wonderful cook out with my parents and siblings. I made the baked beans and instead of using brown sugar (which I was out of) I put in some aged sorghum - they were a hit!
And we had fresh corn on the cob and homemade ice cream. Plus there was a cake to celebrate my nephews who did well in the 4-H tractor driving project. They both will continue to the regionals and then hopefully the state. Last year my oldest nephew that's in 4-H went to state for tractors. He's a charmer! Oh well. . .
see you in the morrow!

The kids are takin' a cat that just had 4 kittens (we hadn't planned for that), clay projects, coin collections, a bug collection, marshmallow rice krispie treats and a gun safety project. We'll see how it goes. Busy day ahead. Thanks for the e-mail, Romeena! Slow weekend at the flea market but we did sell some furniture. Hey to Mavis, Asa, Homemaker, Fun girl, Mrs. Wiley, Hazel, De§, Miss Ellie, and Helen. Where's Ellen Brown and Aunt Bee and Dixie Belle? Did anyone ever locate Rock or Tom? Hope they didn't get lost in any caves. We'll have to send Barney and Thelma Lou out with a search party. Is Briscoe still down there in Margueritaville?

So how was everyone's 4th?? We had fun even if it did rain nearly all day. It stopped by night time and we shot off some "illegal" Fireworks;) Down here in Florida it's illegal to have the kind that fly but everyone goes to Alabama or Georgia to get the good kind. None of us were arrested ......yet! They may have an APB out on us so if I go missing ya'll will know why!

Everyone be sure to stretch, wash your face, and eat some breakfast....it could be a long day!

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7821: God morning Porch! Homemaker, is your salsa recipe on Aunt Bea's Cookbok site? All this salsa talk is making me hanker for mexican food. Des, I'm so sorry to hear about your Fatehr-in-law, prayers for the whole family! Dixiebelle, where are you in Florida? We don't want you geting any APB's or 7-12's or 6-15's at your tender age.

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7822: Hey homemaker--I know all about the teachers who have others wrapped around their fingers. Our MIMH teacher is as lazy as they come. Her aide does all the work while she cruises the net looking for good restaurants to eat at. No one really enjoys her company, but what are ya gonna do? I have subbed in that room quite a bit. I do not enjoy her company, but I LOVE those kids....so I always agree to sub. Ah, the things we do for love. A couple of my favorite kids are leaving this year. After second grade they transfer to another school. I sure will miss them.

The lady who was an aide for a CP boy has decided not to make the jump to middle school with him. She is now the school librarian. And the school district in all it's wisdom has decided not to find a replacement until a week before school starts. (Can you see that vein popping out on my neck?) I won't get on my soap box. I would take the job in a minute if I hadn't had back surgery. I am not supposed to lift anything over 25 lbs. It would be necessary to hold him up to get him into the bathroom. (He is in a wheelchair.) That is one precious child. I will tell you that right now.
We had some of those purty fireworks. One fell over as it was going off and nearly took the neighbors head off. Mike was dancing on it trying to get it out. It could have been on America's Funniest Videos. After we appologized to the people, we went inside and didn't light anymore. Now we are stuck with half a box of fireworks, But Barney Jr. does things strictly by the book.

I am really starting to worry about Rock and Tom.
If you are out there, please enter and sign in please. (Remember that from What's my Line?) Hey BDJ, after those "Changes in latitudes, Changes in attitudes" have you decided to forsake your computer and settle down in Margaritaville?

Hey to all my porch pals! Have a great week and don't work to hard.

Hey homemaker, if you decide to make the scene at the State Fair this year let me know and maybe we could meet up for a couple ears. Roastin' and Elephant that is. Ha Ha Ha.
Take it easy ya'll.
Fun Girl

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7823: Oh, Fun Girl. Why'd you have to mention roasted corn? One of my favorite things in all this world. Roasted corn like you get at a fair. Nothing on it, just the corn. Nothing better!
I'm really hoping we'll hear from Tom soon. I've missed Rock too, but I worry more about Tom, with his fragile health. Hope they show up soon.
De§, I'm sure sorry to hear about your father-in-law. Tough times. My prayers are for your husband and you, and your family. Also am very glad you all didn't get washed away. That high water down your way has been something!
homemaker, I always put sorghum, or blackstrap molasses in baked beans. Makes 'em super yummy! Even when I have brown sugar, I still use molasses as well.
Where's possum? Haven't seen him in a few days. Hope he didn't run off with Rock and Tom.
Well, gotta run. Need to go over and visit my dad for a little while. Have a great evening, friends. Sugarplum says hey!--Romeena

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7824: hey Mavis - should I give out our "secret" recipe for salsa? You "know" how difficult it is to find all the secret ingrediants - LOL Mrs. Wiley, Mavis and I had this discussion last year. It is a pretty simple recipe once you have all the ingredients. Mavis uses the same recipe as I do. BTW - Mavis - there is a wonderful cookie jar site on the web - it's Steph's Country Kitchen Goodness. I would link you to the site but I don't know how. I am really getting anxious to make some Christmas gifts. Right now - I am flea marketing for milk bottles - saw the cutest thing with them. You fill them up with peppermints, gumballs, assorted hard candies, etc. . .make your own milk cap - tie it up with a ribbon or raffia and voila! - your gift is complete and not only do they have what's inside but a milk bottle from days gone by. Little cream bottles would be cute too! Now that is a Mayberry gift!

Best wishes at the fair Charlotte! I hope the bug collection doesn't end up with Rice Krispie Treats or you'll have some buggy treats or sticky bugs! Or Both!!!

Well - take care ya'll!

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7833: Okay Mrs. Wiley - Are you sure you can keep this is a secret?? Okay - everyone else - shut your eyes for a moment. The secret recipe is - go to Walmart and find Ball 100% Natural Salsa mix and add your own 'maters and VOILA! you have salsa! Just read them instructions real careful like cause you need some vinegar too. It's pretty simple and simply good! You all can open your eyes now!

You know I heard something interesting the other day in regards to 9-11. The devil took two different carriers of planes that day American Airlines and United Airlines to destroy America and guess what happened - America United.

Fun Girl,I hear ya talking about your special kids from school. I love mine too. I had a favorite little girl with CP (also in a wheelchair, had to carry her into the bathroom, etc.) that's moving on to the Middle School. I could get her to talk and do things that no one else could. I wonder how she's gonna do next year. Might have to pop in from time to time and check on her. Also hear y'all on the subject of some teachers who get away with anything and everything while us teacher assistants work our you-know-whats off. 'Cept it's not the Internet with mine- they'd rather sit around browsing through Avon books and catalogs. Okay,I'm getting off the soapbox, but I could go on and on.
On a much better note,my mom is coming home from the hospital on Wednesday. She was in terrible pain and couldn't walk before she had a spinal fusion. Now she is pain free and walking very good with a walker. God is so good!
Everyone have a good evening on the porch and don't let the skeeters bite ya!

I should be catching up on all the work I have to do since I been off gallavantin' around at the flea market and the 4-H fair but thought I'd rather relax with you all for a few minutes. Homemaker, we can keep the bugs and Krispies separate. The bugs went today and the Krispies go tomorrow. My little daughter was so disappointed cuz she only got a red ribbon on her kitty. The judge didn't really explain why either. Then this afternoon the judges looked at all the projects and didn't even put the ribbons on them. We'd had enough heat so we left. Guess we'll find out how she did on her clay projects tomorrow. My son's bugs got a Best of Class and State Fair Rating. He was pretty happy. And his gun safety got a blue and both kids' coin collections got blues. So, all in all not bad. One more day to go. Thank goodness! Fun Girl, glad you didn't blow your neighbor's head off. Dixie Belle, you be careful with them thar illegal fireworks. Crossin' the border to buy 'em, why you should be a-shamed! Enjoy the fireflies everybody while I work here at my computer till midnight!

July 08, 2002 - Msg 7838: Hey possum under a rock...Christopher is my favorite CP kid. When he wouldn't want to use arm power to move his wheel chair I would get in front of him and act like I was one of them there wrasslers and say "BRING IT ON SUCKER!" He'd get to giggling and drool all over himself, but you should have seen them arms a pumping to move that chair. I knew what the boy could do and I just had to find a way to motivate him to do the job. We had a little firecracker a couple years back. She had a bad habit of using bad works and I am talking about the one that starts with "F". I bribed her and told her that if she would stop I would bring her a Garth Brooks picture.(He's her favorite.--She loves "I Got Friends In Low Places") Well it worked. She stopped all the bad language. Then the MIMH teacher--YES the lazy one, had the nerve to ask me not to give it to her because she had not behaved in class......
Well I figured that Allie had held up her end of the bargain by cleaning up her language, so I was gonna hold up mine. I even laminated the pictures cause she would hold them so tight.
Well I have rambledon here almost all day off and on, so I am gonna get of here now. Sweet dreams all. Fun Girl

July 09, 2002 - Msg 7842: Hey ~De§~, looks like you were hangin' around and hangin' around and hangin' around the Porch about the same time I was. I'm sorry we couldn't chat. I'm also sorry to read about your father-in-law's passing. Please pass on my best wishes to your hubby as well, and take some for yourself while I'm standin' here. That's the time.

Hey to the Porch! It's been awhile since I seed a bunch'a you folks, and some'a you new ones I ain't never seed, but it's good to see ever'body! It looks like this summer ain't beein' too bad for anybody (so far), so you all continue to stay cool as much as you can. Wouldn't want anybody to get heat stroke or nothin' nasty like that.

Speakin' of funerals, I helped bury my Aunt Dot just before the 4th. Aunt Dot was my daddy's oldest brother's widow, and she was a wonderful person. Family from all over the country gathered together in little Graham, TX to say their goodbyes. I hadn't seen some of those folks since the last family funeral (those who attended), and some a lot longer before that. I wish my family had regularly-scheduled family reunions, but we never have and I guess we never will. Weddin's and funerals is all we meet up for anymore, and either way, somebody's in mourning. Why can't we ever get together when everybody's happy? (I'm kiddin' about the weddin's, you know...)

One thing that was REAL different is how SHORT the trip back to Aunt Dot's hometown was. I remember going there when I was a kid, riding in the back of the big station wagon, usually in the "tail-gunner" position (you all ever ride in the VERY BACK of one'a them old station wagons, in the seats that face to the REAR instead of forward?). Anyway, as I recall from my younger days, we'd get up at around five-oh-lord-thirty in the morning, and it seemed to take HALF A DAY to get there. But when we made the recent trip for the funeral, it took just under two hours from my house! I wonder if the roads are just better now, or I drive like a maniac? It sure was different anyway.

Well, I guess I've overstayed my welcome again by blabberin' on like an idiot. I'll let somebody else talk now. You all take care, hug somebody who needs it, and act like somebody. (Maybe somebody else will hug YOU!)

I'll see ya,
*Rafe Hollister

Thanks for the secret salsa recipe. I have to admit I'm a little disapointed though. I was havin visions of lime and jalapinos and onions... somehow tearing off the top of that little packet just don't twang the buds of my imagination. But I promise not to tell.

Congrats to all the lil ribbon winners!

July 09, 2002 - Msg 7844: I am sorry to disappoint you Mrs. Wiley -a but the box is colorful. And the salsa is delicious. . .I have promised one of y friend's daughters a quart of the stuff for Christmas. She's already a-twitter with excitement.

It's early here and I would fix breakfast but about the only thing left in the cupboard is pancakes - anyone game? I have some maple "sirple" to go on them. . .mm good!
Hoping for some rain today. It's gotten awfully dry - 25 days without rain and temps in the 90's for most of that. They say maybe thunderstorms tonite which means my oldest may be visiting my bed. He's not to keen on thunder and lightning!

Another funny thing about our family cook-out the other nite was that my sister-in-law had a box of hand me downs for the boys. I think she thought that it would offend me but I love hand me downs. . .anyway, my oldest is 5 but he is over 4 ft. tall and keeps growing taller and taller and taller. There were some size 10 jeans and I was happy because he'll most likely be in them this fall for school. My nephew who is in 8th grade said, well what grade will he be in? When I replied kindergarten - his mouth dropped. Anyway, the box was awesome and I found lots of nice school clothes for him. He also has a big foot - he is in a size 3 1/2. It has been so nice to get the clothes. He is one child that has been hard to keep clothes for because of his growth spurts. To think he weighed 4lb.5 oz. at birth - LOL

Oh well. . .I have rambled on and on. . .sorry!
Take care!

Rafe! Good to see you, friend! You've been away too long. I, too, remember the trips in a station wagon, though I rode shotgun for my husband, the driver. We had four little tail-gunners over in the back, though. Had a big old '71 Buick Roadmaster wagon. Built like a tank, fire-engine red, and the best car we ever owned. We looked like a family of gypsies on the road sometimes, with kids, dogs, innertubes for the river, cases of soda, boxes of food, whatever. But boy, did we have fun! Those were the days.

Hey Ro, glad the plumpster is all better.
You folks who work with those disadvantaged children are a-ok in my book. Keep up the good work.
Now, on the subject of corn, let me say this. I grow much of it every year, and the trick to corn is getting it fresh. The second you pick it, it will start to turn to starch. Therefore my preferred method is to take a boiling pot of water out to the garden and husk the corn still attached to the stalk and then wave it over the boiling water for a second. That and some salt, pepper and a cube of butter and you is ready to munch. To be done right, melted butter must be running down your arm and dripping off your elbows, then you know you got it all going on.
My corn is still a ways from harvest cause we had a late frost and I had to replant, but when its ready ya'll come over for some.
And now where is Salty???
