Hey to Mayberry Fan, I know you posted a while back about your grandchild with bi-polar disorder and the communication disorder. Sounds like we could set them a place at our table and they'd fit right in. I am bipolar myself and Little Opie has Communication-Auditory processing disorder, which I am just begining to realize the full extent of. (HEY HOMEMAKER--did you see the article in the STAR on 4/21/02 on CAPD. Very interesting.)
I don't want to be nosey, but if the child shows signs of depression, I do hope that they are treating him. I have been bipolar a long time but was diagnosed only in 1998. I spent a miserable adolescence wishing most of the time that I was dead. The depression came and went and finally I was diagnosed in 1998 and for the most part things have gone really smoothly. Please let his/her mom and dad know that if they don't find a doctor that they can trust and feel comfortable with to keep looking. Medicine can turn bipolar lives around if we are willing to take it and cooperate with our doctors.
All is going well here. Only a month til school is our. By the way homemaker, we decided to homeschool next year and get little Opie into homeschool. Our county has a very active homeschool association and sponsors many activities and opportunities for socialization.
Also he well continue with swimming and start karate.
Well that's my 2 cents worth.

Hi Porch, I'm posting late tonight because I have been through a lot of stress since yesterday afternoon. I know I've told you about my special needs grandsons, but I haven't yet told you about my youngest daughter, 22, who has bipolar and lives at home. She was diagnosed last year after 2 of the worst years in our family (because of her manias). Well, because she wasn't attending school and couldn't keep a full-time job AND because Social Security denied her medical coverage, she had no insurance and we had to pay for the meds ourselves. They were always changing them and we were paying on average $300 per month not including psych-doc visits. Plus all the meds always made her sick to her stomach and she is already tall and too thin. So, just when our money ran out in November, she decided to quit the meds and work on her problems (stealing, lying, sexuality) herself and she got a job, took a couple of college classes, and was moving in the right direction. I actually agreed with her plan because it was clear that her manias had always been preceeded by some stupid decision she would make to associate with immoral people and then the problems would begin as you can imagine. Then she'd take off to God knows where without a dime to her name (unless she managed to steal some of ours) and without a single word before hand. Well, as of last December, she had been restricting her contacts with these types and had been doing so, so very well.... til yesterday. We discovered today that she has been secretly in contact with one particular girl and several others as well. We haven't seen nor heard from her since yesterday at noon. This has happened times before when she was going through monthly episodes of mania, but she had been doing so well for six months.... we are so heartbroken. I have spent much time crying which I haven't done for a long time. I had almost gotten used to it, but this time, our hopes were up. We had just begun to trust her again. Well, I really don't mean to put a damper on the porch. It's just that our family, especially my daughter, could really use your prayers right now and I really just needed to come get a little dose of friendly caring. I feel too exhausted to go back through all the posts to read who has requested prayer, but believe me, I pray for you all and since God already knows what each of you needs, I guess that will work. Thank you all. I'll try to come by tomorrow hopefully with my spirits raised back up. ~Mayberry Fan~ (so sorry if I've made anyone feel down... I hope not)

By the way, if anyone finds a laundry basket with odd socks in it, would you let me know...I have the matches to them!! Somewhere between here and there they are missing. To Mayberry Fan--I think that your daughter needs to see a lawyer about getting on disability. Maybe through Legal Aide? My brother-in-law is on it for bipolar and he has a wonderful doctor who supports him whole heartedly. Did you happen to see the 60 Minutes that was on this past week. There was a doctor on from the Inst. of Mental Health talking about all the money they waste and how little research they are doing to help people who suffer from bipolar and schizophrenia. I know I probably spelled that wrong. Anyway I am leaving and taking my soap box with me and making way for someone else.

Hey, all my new friends on the Porch and welcome, Emily. I think you will find this Porch a friendly place to be. I found that out real quick.
To all of you wonderful people, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! This Porch must have a direct prayer line to Heaven! My daughter came home safe and sound last night and in time for supper with the whole family no less (older daughter and family came over for *Chinese* that we cooked up ourselves). I'd say that's quite a miracle how she just came home and we all just sat down to supper together. The Lord is good. Later after the rest of the family left, she talked a bit about how stupid she had been and how these new 'friends' are the same as all of these types have been and how they were only interested in themselves as they always are. She admitted that she has been just like them. I pray that the truth is finally dawning on her. Fun Girl, thank you so much for all your concern and encouragement from a personal perspective. I really appreciate your and everyone's concerns. So many of you have shown your caring that it has kept me up and even though I wasn't up to staying long enough to respond, I did read your uplifting posts... thank you wonderful people. God must have sent me here just in the nick of time.. and I just thought I was coming here for the fun of it! Little did I know He had other plans. Well, we and daughter will work things out .. just don't stop praying for us cause apparently you have some powerful prayers!
BTW, I think I'm closing in on a name. Should be soon. To all of the Porch.. (((((HUGS))))) You are all in my prayers for all your needs. This morning's cup of coffee was much enjoyed. I think I owe you all a special treat of cinnamon coffee cake real soon!

I don't know if I got lazy or what, but I do believe in God and I know that he works miracles in our lives every day. I go to church occasionally and participate in alot of church related activities and help out with Pathfinders. I graduated from Indiana Academy in 1981 and attended Southern College in Chattanoonga for two years. Kinda would like to know where you stand with the church and some of your feelings on the subject, so if you want your could look me up in the cutlass and we could email a little bit.

Mornin', everybody! Been away for the weekend, but am back and caught up on the posts. Mayberry Fan, that's great news about your daughter. Glad she's home, and it sounds like, at least at this moment, she's ready to try to get things fixed. Hang in there.
Emily, we're glad to have you. You'll hear some serious conversations here on this porch, but don't let it scare you. That's just life, honey. You'll hear some crazy, fun, and loving things here too, and again, that's life.
De§, you're right. One of these days we'll have to meet when I'm down in Fredbg. Had my dad with me this time, wouldn't have been a good time, but someday. BTW, if you're in Fredbg this summer, stop at a place called "Take the Wrap" and get yourself the best "wrap" sandwich you ever flapped your lips over! They operate out of a trailer parked in front of Pardi's, which is closed down. There are picnic tables set up under a huge oak, or you can take the food to go. They're out on the east end of Main Street, on the north side of the street, in case you don't know where Pardi's was. Next door to Mamacita's. Gooooooooood!!!
Prayers for all of our friends and neighbors. Lots of troubles these days, but lots of blessings, too. Well, got a cleaning lady coming, gonna get the tile dust shoveled out of here today before something sprouts and takes root in it. Have a great Mayberry day. Sugarplum says hey!--Romeena

Great News Mayberry Fan. . .
I had a lond post written the other nite but I had a word that I couldn't use and my computer is so old that I can't go back once I type so I gave up for the evening.
Fun Girl - try contacting Drexler and Associates in Indy (they are an audiological place with great people) - they do Fast Forward I think. I have never heard it done with hearing impaired kids before but it may work.
Spent Saturday at a goat auction and the only thing we bought were cokes and popcorn and candy - no goats! Yesterday we tatooed goats and worked in the flower bed with goat residue (manure for you country folks). My roses should be dandy this year!

Hey to the Porch and Happy Birthday to Mrs. Wiley! Every year is a gift from God isn't it? At church yesterday, I picked up a card with a prayer on it that I would like to give to all of you for having been so kind to me during my recent troubles:
I said a prayer for you today
And know God must have heard
I felt the answer in my heart
Although He spoke no word!
I didn't ask for wealth or fame
(I knew you wouldn't mind)
I asked Him to send treasures
Of a far more lasting kind!
I asked that He'd be near you
At the start of each new day
To grant you health and blessings
And friends to share your way!
I asked for happiness for you
In all things great and small
But it was for His loving care
I prayed for most of all!
I hope you all enjoy this prayer that I mean especially for you. You are all precious.
We and daughter are working things out...doing alot of talking and it is helping. One of the things we are going to do is the Bible study (here on this site) together.
Okay, I've decided on a 'name'.... "Clara Johnson" one of my favorite characters. Has anyone already picked it? If not, that's what I'll take. ~formerly.. Mayberry Fan~

Clara Johnson, why I thank that sounds a pretty as a prize winnin' rose! You picked a good 'un, and as far as I know it's not taken, but then again,I don't post everywhere. I hear the other site can get a mite testy over those names. Ain't that right Aunt Bea? Thanks for the prayer, it was beautiful and I needed that today.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY MRS. WILEY!HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! I just had to make your day complete Mrs. Wiley! If I did that in Indiana, it would be against the law. They have a law that says you can't sing off key, and I can't sing a lick, not a lick! Here in Alabama (FYI, Mayor Pike) I just couldn't bring you an ice cream cone in my hip pocket! Glad your gettin' your free one! Any birthday that ends in "0" is always BIG! Enjoy your day!
We come from all over the place Mayor Pike, I think that the TAGS show "rubs off" on a lot of us 'uns. But me, I get mine natural like, since I'm from the "Heart of Dixie"!

Mayor Pike, Sugarplum and I are from Texas. I'm actually from South Texas, so guess that qualifies me as a Southerner. Just what Southern euphemisms were strange to you? We'd be proud to explain - all you gotta do is ask.--Romeena

Happy Birthday Mrs. Wiley.
I have a few prayer requests. Mama, a little under the weather, nothing serious, but her brother had a stroke (2nd in one year's time, bad heart attack 12 years ago),but it appears he is blind in one eye from it. Also, though it didn't effect his limbs, he is too weak to walk. His wife has cancer, so he has to be able to walk when he gets out of the hospital or he will have to go to a nursing facility. also my great aunt fell and broke her 91 year old shoulder. Probably will have to go to a nursing home, no children. The people caring for her now are elderly and have other responsibilities. And my 8 year old niece who went blind temporarily about 6 weeks ago, was complaining with her eye hurting tonight.
I am sorry to hear about all the sick children. It is sad. No child should be sicker than Opie was with his tonsilitis.
I'm a southern belle here in NC. Lots of folks say I sound more southern than a North Carolinian should be.

Mayor Pike, I'm from waaay out west... California. But, I'm from the Central Valley which is not at all like most people think of California. It's agricultural and most of the towns are rural farm or cattle towns. The town I live in is called 'the Cowboy Capital of the World' and has one of the biggest rodeos I'm told. We also are surrounded by dairies on the south, cattle ranches on the east and north, and orchards on the west. Fresno, our third largest city is still known for being the "raisin capital" of the world! Our fourth largest city, Bakersfield, is known as the 'Nashville of the West' because it apparently has contributed more than a few country singers. Basically, it's a conservative, 'Bible-belt' area here and has a bit of a 'southern' feel probably due to the many, many folks who migrated here from Oklahoma and Kansas during the "Dust Bowl" of the '30's. What tickles me is how you can go to a Chinese restaurant here and hear Country music... they play it everywhere here! Even my daughter listens to it. Well, that's just a little more than you were asking about Mayor, but you know how it is when you ask a question of a rural, small towner who always has time to 'jaw' a while!
Good Night, Porch. Tomorrow I'm bringing that coffee cake I promised.... matter of fact, it's appropriately named "Cowboy Coffee Cake". See you then.

Happy Birthday to the porch. One year old today. And what a great year it has been. It has been my privilege and honor to have been here. I have met some wonderful folks and bonded some lifetime friendships here. Thanks to Allan for providing this forum to escape the tough realities of the real world. I remember how we all felt after 9/11 and came on here with our fears and concerns and our love for each other and our country. What a great thing it was and still is to be able to come here and enjoy one another.
And a big thank you to all of you who reside here on the porch. Thank you for your friendship, love and concern. Thank you for your prayers in my behalf when I have requested them. But most of all, thank you for your friendship. I love you folks and think of you much during the day.
There are several here on the porch I know that are facing health issues and others who are facing personel problems. My prayers go out to each of you, and I know that you will all survive your crisis and bounce back stronger.
Thanks again Allan and Porch buddies. Here's to another great year ahead.

Happy Anniversary, porch! Like Andy said to Opie, "it's hard for me to tell you just how much you do mean to me 'cause you're a part of me". Thanks to Floyd, for putting together this porch and fixin it when it's broke. Thanks to all of the posters here. I started posting around the 3rd week in May, and officially became Hazel on June 14th, 2001. Thanks to Mavis, Floyd, Rafe and Charleene for helping me pick out a name and making me feel welcome. The Andy Griffith Show has always been so much a part of my life, and it's so great to be able to talk to people that feel the same way about it as I do! We make each other laugh with funny lines from the show, or just talk about the story lines. In the year I've been here, I feel like we've been thru a lot. We had a girls softball team (thanks to coach Asa, and Rock, for dressing up like a girl and being our catcher); Asa and Salty Dog invented the Asalty Dog, better known as the AD-2K, and helped many of us with our bad backs. (I never did get my pay for that informercial I did). We had a wild party at the first of the year (boy, Romeena can really dance!). Like Asa said, we consoled each other after September 11th. Many of us feel comfortable enough to ask for prayers. We've even had one or two people pass through, call us a bunch of snobs, and then leave. All we can do is keep trying to give each other someone to talk to, and support each other. And have fun while we are doing it. I guess my time is up. Thanks, everyone.
