I have been trying to read up on the wonderful happenings here but I haven't always had time to post. I am truly thankful for ya! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving - two radio stations in Cincinnati are playing 24 hour non-stop Christmas music. Nothing like a little Bing Crosby and Perry Como to get you in the spirit. I just wish they still had Christmas specials like they had when I was growing up. It is time to get out White Christmas (I just love the General!).

November 21, 2001 - Msg 3415: Howdy, friends! Tilley, welcome to this porch, child! Glad to have you. Asa, thanks for asking about my bathroom re-do. No, I'm not cussin' yet, and probably won't. I'm just so thankful we caught the problem in time, before the wall sank into those mushy sole plates, and before black mold got started. Should all be done by next Wednesday. Meantime, I do have another bathroom up front by the guestrooms. I'm just thankful that I don't have to make that little trot out to the "house behind the house". I've done that in my much-younger days, believe me!
Homemaker, when you're feelin' blue, honey, you just come on to this porch. We don't mind a little blue, it washes off. Besides, sharing it dilutes it a lot!
Where's Tom? I'm countin' on a lovely Thanksgiving homily from him. Where does that boy find those things? Always so timely and so sweet.
I'll be having two Thanksgivings. Tomorrow with my brother and his family and my dad, then on Saturday with my son and his family and some friends and my dad. Work schedules couldn't be blended, so we just decided to run it through twice. I'm glad I really like turkey!

November 21, 2001 - Msg 3423: Good evenin' to the Porch! Sure is lonely here at work on Thanksgivin' Eve, just me and my computer. Oh, well. Boss lady says I can split outta here early tonight so's I won't be too grouchy tomorrow for all the festivities. "I didn't get my full eight hours and when I don't get my full eight hours I'm grouchy. DO YOU MIND?!" That was nice of her, sayin' I could leave early and all. She's a wonderful human bein'.

No offense, Mrs. Wiley, but I b'lieve I'll let your sweet potato casserole slide on by. I ain't never been able to stand the taste of sweet potatoes, it don't matter WHAT you do to doctor 'em up, they just make me gag, and there ain't no two ways about it. I'm sure you folks who like sweet potatoes will just love, LOVE Mrs. Wiley's sweet potater casserole, but as for me, I'd just as soon smoke one'a Aunt Bee's pickles.

Thanks much to *Mavis and Asa for sayin' I should post more often, and I'm missed when I ain't here. (Your checks are in the mail.) I appreciate it. It sounds like ever'body is bringin' some good food to eat tomorrow ('cept for that sweet tater stuff *blech* *PTOOOOEY!*). I bet amongst all of us here, we could set a Thanksgiving table that would be a sight to behold. Only none of us would be able to walk afterwards, is all. I looked for somebody to answer Fun Girl's question about the family Ben had thrown in jail on Christmas Eve for moonshinin', but nobody come up with it. The same feller played Lester Scobee in the Andy Forecloses episode, only in The Christmas Story, the feller went by the name of Sam Muggins. What makes the water even muddier is the fact that the woman who played Lester's wife, Helen (Margaret Kerry) also played Sam's wife, Bess. And Joy Ellison played their daughter in both episodes, only she was Mary in one of 'em and Effie in the other'n. The boy (Billy Muggins) wasn't in the other episode, so he musta been fishin' with Opie at the time.

It's nice to see some new faces on the Porch. Welcome back to AngeFan, and welcome to Diana and Tilley (hereafter NOT to be known as "The Beaver". Remember that, ever'body. Do NOT think "The Beaver" when addressing Tilley, okay? I'll keep you all straight, don't worry. :-)

Hey Homemaker, I'm with Asa and Romeena about that thing: If you're feelin' blue, c'mon over to the Porch and set awhile, and let us cheer you up! You're one'a ours, bud, and we take care of our own. As far as I'm concerned, we're all just one big happy family here, and we oughta support each other whenever we can. Sure, we have the occasional weird brother-in-law or crazy aunt that we'd like to hide UNDER the Porch from time-to-time, but by and large, we're all good folks, so let us help you outta them funky times whenever they come callin', okay? We put our Christmas tree tomorrow (a live one at that) and we have friends coming from the city whose children I don't think have had the adventure of hunting through the tree patch for just the right one! So - the dishes are done for today's meal but I promised them some chili and potato soup for tomorrow and so I best be off and getting that started.

November 22, 2001 - Msg 3436: Howdy, everybody! (burp)Oh, pardon me! What a lovely meal we had. My brother and sister-in-law brought the whole, entire meal over to my house! Can you imagine? All I cooked was some sweet 'taters mashed with butter (sorry, Rafe) and made some tea. They brought a regular roasted turkey and a home-smoked one (gooooood!) and dressing, and squash, green beans, mashed taters, gravy, corn and pumpkin pie with real whipped cream. Lots of it. They lopped me off some leftovers and took the rest home with them after dinner, so I don't have an overwhelming amount of food to contend with. I appreciated that, too, because on Saturday we're gonna run the whole thing through again for my kids and their families, except this time I'm cooking.
My dad was here with us, doing pretty well today - followed most of the conversations and physically feeling okay. I'm thankful for that. He's such a precious person, and it's heartbreaking to watch as more and more pieces fall out of his puzzle every day. He knows what's happening, though, and accepts it with grace and humor. That's just his nature, always has been.
Got a full day tomorrow, shopping for Saturday's meal, maybe a little Christmas shopping if the sales look good. Have a great weekend, friends. --Romeena

Well, I ate till I felt like a stuffed turkey. It was good. Mama cooked the collards and fantastic potato salad, butter beans and corn, apple pie and pumpkin pie.
I made a pork roast and stuffing. "All in all it was a good day." I don't plan to get out in that mad house of shoppers tomorrow. I have to go to one store to pick up a book I ordered. AND rake leaves. WE may get some much needed RAIN, not a lot, but a little will be appreciated.

November 24, 2001 - Msg 3453: Hey Porch! Just drove back from ATL and boy is my bottom tired! Looks like everyone had a yummy day - lookin at all your food is makin me hungry again. Hazel, you don't have to tweet me twice, I'm THERE! Our Dinner was just fine. A small crowd of 5 this year, but it was good eatin' - had to have a nap afterwards - then woke up, took a shower, and had dinner (half a turkey sammich and a piece of german choc. cake). Yep, that was the plan. And there's nothin like sleepin in the bed you slept in as a little one.

No malls for me either, but that's because there's no money. I'll be doin my shoppin' later next week. But after readin' Helen's post up there, I'm puttin on a Christmas CD, and startin to drag out the decorations. I Love Christmas!

Oh, girls! I've got a recipe for you that you won't believe! My daughter-in-law's sister spent the day with us yesterday, and she brought a real treat. Chocolate covered cranberries. Yep, you heard it right. You just microwave a little chocolate bark, white or regular, and drop a few fresh cranberries in, spoon them out onto waxed paper to harden, and enjoy. They are wonderful. Try it - what have you got to lose?
Everybody has gone home, no one here but me and Sugarplum, and it's pretty nice. Gonna make me a big glass of tea, snag that last piece of pumpkin pie, and settle back in my big chair with the newspaper. A nap will surely follow. Have a great week, friends. --Romeena

November 26, 2001 - Msg 3477: Good Morning or almost afternoon porch! Boy what a busy weekend. The boys loved the Sawyer Brown concert and my oldest even got to shake Mark (the lead singer's) hand. Talk about wow! My oldest wants a guitar, microphone and stage for Christmas - he's not asking for much.

And yesterday was a day spent with the in-laws. The boys enjoyed it but we were all drained from a long weekend and 3/4 of the family has colds. Daddy only has a good case of poison ivy.

Not much else happening in this neck of the woods.

Just didn't have much to add to the conversation but wanted to put in my two cents worth. Glad to hear your family enjoyed the concert, homemaker. You were right around my neck of the woods. Nashville is only about 30-45 minutes from here. Hope all had a wonderful holiday. We signed up to join Columbia House so we can add to our TAGS collection. Thanks to whoever suggested it. I reckon that is what we will get for each other for Christmas this year is the whole set. It sure is a good thing that this is something we agree on or there could be a big feud over this.

It's great to see Flora and Jelsik and jennieboone, some names from the Porch's past. Welcome home, friends! Mrs. Wiley, that "mean face" you put on up there was a sight to behold. Better be careful though, if you close your eyes too far, your opponent will close 'em the rest of the way for ya. :-)

Hey Fun Girl, sore bottom or not, your posts are always welcome here on the Porch. I usually have a sore bottom after drivin' to the wife's in-laws, but this Christmas we're doin' something entirely different: We're gonna get on board one'a them little turbo-prop planes (aka "buzz-bombs") and FLY to Jonesboro instead of driving. THAT'll be an experience, I tell ya. Them little bitty planes make me NERVOUS. Kinda makes a sore bottom sound not so bad. I've only been on one of 'em before, and that was when I flew up there the day before we got married. Talk about adventure-flyin'! SHEEEEEEEEEESH!!!
