September 18, 2001 - Msg 2211: Thanks for the back-up Asa. And it's not over yet. Our company has been hit with the new Code Red Virus and it has shut down 3 servers and ALL our 130 clients! It's truly an attack on many fronts.

My Dad was also WWII vet, but didn't have to endure the kind of horrors your dad did. What a brave guy! He put it all on the line so we could enjoy the freedom we *used* to have up until now. I hope our Generation-X will pick up where Asa Sr. left off!

#1. The Mayberry.com web site is DOWN and I'm not sure when it'll be back up but we're working on it.

#2. The WBMUTBB Digest mailing list is broken and we're working on that as well.

Whew...I think Newtown Monroe has been helping us out here at the courthouse...I'm just glad he has started painting the front porch yet. :-)

The Farmer's almanac says the first freeze is Oct. 20. My husband thinks there will be snow soon after. All the wooly worms are very dark in color. Not a good sign. We will be starting on the fall woodcutting soon. THen this Maude will definitely have football biceps!
And that cold weather will be just right for goat babies to come - they are due at Christmas/New Year's! I'll call you all to come and help "kid."

September 20, 2001 - Msg 2243: Good evening, friends. What a rousing speech by George W. That boy's education was worth every penny. Friends, please pray along with me. My soldier grandson is supposed to leave tomorrow for Kuwait, for an indeterminate period of time. He turned 21 on the day the towers fell.
I'm still trying to find a big, pretty flag to hang out in front of my house. Even bought a little spotlight to illuminate it, so I don't have to bring it in at night. Now all I need is a flag! If I don't find one soon (I have a few prospects), I'm going to buy red, white and blue contact paper and turn my garage door into a giant flag! Mine is the only flagless house on my street, and my neighbors are starting to look at me funny.
Guess I could ask Newton Monroe to just paint a flag on my garage door, but no telling what country my flag would represent by the time he got through with it.
I'm about to do my part to keep the economy rolling - my car just went out of warranty, and I don't like to gamble with repair bills, so will probably trade this weekend. Got my eye on a real beauty, price is right, etc.
Well, sleep calls and I intend to try to take advantage of the fact that I'm off work tonight. Peace, friends! --Romeena

September 20, 2001 - Msg 2244: Hey to ya Romeena, and prayers go out to your brave Grandson. What would we do without brave Men and Women in this land of ours. Prayers go out to your grandson and whole family Romeena. They started laying people off at my job: most of our clients are airlines and other travel industry related businesses. Many have pulled out or cut back. Then add this Nimda virus problem, which we are STILL trying to kill... well, morale is low. So today we're having a pot luck lunch. The company is buying fried chicken and the employees are bringing in the rest. It's gonna be a humm-dinger of a lunch!

Hey Frankie, Hey Hazel and good golfing to you Asa. I guess it is time for you to practice that weed cutting swing again. Just don't hit anyone with that lethal swing of yours. Do you think they have golf courses in Afghanistan? Maybe you could enlist? Take out that bin Laden with one of your swings. Bang - right between the eyes! You would be a national hero for sure!

Our week-end will be consumed with a goat auction (of course - some more of that consuming) and a family "rebellion." Looks like the rain is supposed to hold off until Sunday evening. My fingers are crossed.

Have a flag waving, heart pounding, Mayberry kind of week-end.

God Bless President Bush and all the boys overseas! Amen!

Thanks to all of you for your prayers and good wishes. My grandson will appreciate it. I'll be joining in those prayers, because I know he's one of thousands who will be going, and many of those will belong to others here on this porch, such as Mavis's nephew. Prayers for all of them.
Well, I did it. I struck my blow for the economy, and bought that car. It's a dandy, and I'm glad I did it. Hate to start car payments again, but repairs aren't cheap either. Sure wish Goober and Gomer were nearby.

September 25, 2001 - Msg 2315: Welcome New Neighbor and Danny. It is turning chilly here in NC. Even in the Piedmont region the leaves are beginning to change. It is a little early. Mayberry Days is this weekend and never have we left our home with the leaves changing already, so I wonder what Mt. Airy will look like.
Romeena, God bless your grandson and may God keep a protective guard around him at all times. These are trying times. I pray for everyone in the whole world.
And I'm glad you got a new car, what kind ? I've been looking, can't afford one though. Hubby is the only one who works. They sure are pretty though. I just love that new car smell. I bought some stuff that is supposed to have that new car smell but it is different.
Frankie Flint, Walker's has the newest in cosmetics and perfumes, come on by and buy.
Everyone take care. Take time to pray and take time to tell one another that you love them.
I love you folks.
Oh, and that President Bush and his office is doing a swell job and Mayor of New York is too. I hope they will let him run another term. NY needs him until they can somewhat return to normalcy, which will be a long time.
I hope they don't rebuild the WTC twin towers. NO BUILDING ANYWHERE SHOULD BE HIGHER THAN THE FIRE DEPARTMENT LADDERS CAN REACH ! (wife on a former volunteer fireman). I think a memorial, something similar to what they did in Oklahoma is in order for "ground zero". My prayers for all who are hurting and those in rescue. And for those precious dogs too. I read an article saying that people see the fireman sitting alone talking with the search dogs. These dogs can't wear masks to keep the dust out of their lungs. These dogs are like psychiatrists to the rescue people. Animals are wonderful.
Once, I felt really bad and all my cats gathered on my bed. They sensed something was wrong. I told them "Mama will be okay", which I think helped make me okay. That and the cats and God.
Night, night.

September 25, 2001 - Msg 2316: Hey to all! Yes I am still hanging on and checking in each day to see what is going on. Last week we went to nature camp with Little Opie's class and when his pa and I got back, we both had awful colds. So, I have been feeling purty poorly this week.

Went out and got Ricky Skaggs new album today. Oh how I teared up as I heard him on Shady Grove. Put me in mind of my darling boys and I just had to give them a call and share it with them. If you like the music on TAGS you would love the new C.D. (You can tell how ancient I am my me calling it an album.)It is cllled "History of the Future."
He is one young man who is proud of his blue grass heritage. His mama raised him right.

Envious of all who are gathered with their Mayberry Family for the fun and festivities for Mayberry Days. God bless them.

A Sacred thing.
we can't contain the past
like fireflie in a jar,
nor hold tomorrow back-
no matter who we are.
we cannot stop the tides
that daily ebb and flow,
nor prevent the winter skies
from sending flakes of snow.
we can't provide the birds
a nest when it is spring
or cause a rose to bloom-
for that's a sacred thing!
man, with all his treasures
that only a few can share,
must leave these thing to God
who lets us know he's there.

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2319: Good morning, porch. Liked your poem, Tom. Very true.
- Hazel

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2320: Good Morning Porch! Just crawled out from under all the civers. It's cold this morning. Time to crank up the heat, and get the young 'uns ready for school. They's moving kinda slow. Best get that hot breakfast in them. Have a blessed day. Praying for you all. ~ New Neighbor

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2321: Morning Porch. Who's turn for breakfast? Sounds like New Neighbor is cooking up a storm, but we been invited over...yet. Thanks for the poem Tom.
Good to hear from you Fun Girl. Take care of that leg. Hope everyone has a great day.

"24 HOURS A DAY, A POLICEMANS JOB IS NEVER DONE. I'LL TELL HIM ANG."

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2322: Morning Asa:
New Neighbors' policy is like Aunt Bea, if your here pull up a chair. All are welcome to our home. No one ever went away hungry!! How about a pancake and waffles? Sausage or ham fresh from the smokehouse? ~ New Neighbor

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2323: I'll be right over for breakfast, New Neighbor. Let's see.. which one is your place? Do I have to walk past the old Rimshaw place to get there?
- Hazel

"It's just the lighting, like Andy said."

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2324: Sounds good New Neighbor. Hope I wasn't pushy back there. If there is one thing I can't stand is being pushy. Hazel, run like mad when you get to the Rimshaw place. They is spooks in there you know.

Asa

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2325: The Rimshaw place is not haunted especially for little old witches like me. :-) It has been one darn morning here. I have been on my broom about the children I teach not having homework completed, no names on papers, being tardy for school. . .and the list goes on. I admit I am an old fashioned teacher. I expect things to be completed and I expect the children to be responsible for their things. When they blame Mom for not putting things in their backpack - I ask who brings the backpack to school. My four year old and three year old both pack their backpack for school. I tell them what they need and they put it in so they will know where it is. Sorry - I needed to vent!

Okay Asa, it sounds like you and hazel are up to your old tricks. Welcome new neighbor, glad you could sit a spell with us. I am glad you are fixing breakfast. I am not too much for oatmeal but could I have cream of wheat instead? And Danny from across the ocean, be careful of the castles in Lithuania - they are good for moonshine stills. And Gomer may be in one of them rooms - you know how he likes to do a sneak attack.

Hey Fun Girl - this teaching thing is really starting to interfere with my porch sitting! Do I need to get my priorities in line or what. Porch sitting and then teaching - how do you think the superintendent would like that?!

take care ya'll

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2326: Hey Homemaker. I just can't picture you as a witch. Just a frustrated ejukator. Thats how my spelling teacher was with me. Wonder why.

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2327: Whoops forgot to sign my homework.

Asa

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2328: Better watch it Asa you don't sign yer homework & homemaker will make you warsh the blackboard. I'm not crying or complainin too much Tom I would like to see them win, but I know there are more important things going on, just trying to lighten it up a bit is all. Didn't mean to offend.
Better go get my homework papers & make sure they have my name on them. Do we have to have the date on it too??
*Mavis

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2329: I needed that visit from the front porchsters this morning. It helps to get the morning going. Way to go Homemaker!!! Them young 'uns never learn reponsibility if mom and dad keep making excuses for them. I too used to teach, before the 4 special gifts came to our house. Now it's a full time job just parenting them. Keeps me on my toes and knees!! That's why I have enjoyed the front porch for a breather. ~ New Neighbor

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2330: Whats for supper? Pssss. I hope it isn't Andy's burnt Chicken. I meant to tell you yesterday, Mavis. Rusty is a registered dog, so they made us give him a middle name. His middle name is Griffith.
Does yours have middle name?

There is this great web site where you can look up

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2331: Yep homemaker, I reckon we need to keep our priorities in line and I can't imagine going into dear Dr. Furness' office and saying, "Look here Ron, now this lunch room mess is interfering with my porch sitting, so let's see if we can't work on it. HA!
The cold is doing better. I have quit my before school job and so I am hoping to get organized and
get back into to swing of things.
I reckon I could make breakfast in the morning. How does sausage, grits, eggs and biscuits sound.
And maybe some hot coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice. I was born in Georgia and we southern women only know how to make breakfast one was and that's BIG!!!

See ya'll in the morning, for breakfast? First come, first served.
Fun Girl

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2332: Howdy, friends! Been working, and when I'm working it's 12hr shifts, back to back, so don't get to sit on the porch for a few days. Tonight will be my last night, then off for five. Goody!
My dog has a middle name, too. She's the Sugarplum Faerie! (That's the Old English spelling of "fairy". Just ask Malcolm Merriwether, he'll verify that. New Neighbor, that breakfast sounds great! Are you gonna do it again tomorrow? I'll drop by on my way home from work, and how about I bring some fresh blueberries? They're good mixed into a little cottage cheese.
Well, gotta get to work. Everyone have a great evening. Wish I could just stay right here on the porch and watch the sun go down, maybe watch the kids catch some fireflies.--Romeena

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2333: Hey, Fun Girl! I see you're in charge of breakfast tomorrow - OK if I bring my blueberries and cottage cheese to your house? It's a little like grits and prunes, but lots better!--Romeena

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2334: Hey to the porch. Go Rams!

(you go, Mavis)

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2335: AngeFan, that url didn't jive. Could you please trouble check it?

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2336: I'm trying Jelsik but them skins ain't co-operating with me! AngeFan Don't go laughing now, you'll hurt the dog's feelings but all my critters have full names. there's Buster Brown, Blackberry Dumplin', Lil Bit o Blarney, & Tatiana Tink (italics it what we call them)
What time is breakfast I don't have to work tomorrow so I might be late, save me some.
*Mavis

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2337: Thanks for breakfast this morning, New Neighbor. I was so out of breath when I got there, after running like mad past the old Rimshaw place. I coulda swore I saw an ax thru the winder as I was running past. I'll be at your place first thing in the morning, Fun Girl. I get up at 4:30 every day, will that be to early?
- Hazel

Andy: A few minutes one way or the other shouldn't make any difference.
Barney: Well, it does to me. I've got a clock in my stomach.

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2338: My dear sweet doggie passed away 9 years ago, but her name was Scarlet O. Hairy! (a Chow) ~ Mrs. Wiley
ps. "hey" to all on the porch!

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2339: Good evening porch. Sounds like we are off to Fun Girl's for breakfast in the morn. I'll be there for sure. Hey to everyone on the porch. Go Raiders, (ditto Mavis, the diversion is good).

Asa

September 26, 2001 - Msg 2340: How about blueberry pancakes for breakfast. I love blue berries, but don't care for cottage cheese. I don't eat healthy.
So good to see everyone.
Homemaker, sounds like you had a "Miss Crump" day.
Hope it gets better. When I was a teenager, we didn't plan it, but it just so happened that none of us read our homework and she went out crying. I hated that because I really liked her.
Beautiful poem TOM. Hope all our friends are arriving to Mayberry Days safely. It's gonna be the chilliest year yet, well since I've been.
Mavis, maybe Tom feels like I do, sports starting back anytime is too soon for me...haha ! I read something saying that it may be better if the nation doesn't get back to normal because for a while, most of the nation stood united, race and religious differences were overlooked. Those are good things that came out of a tragedy. That good thing we shouldn't lose. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL.

September 27, 2001 - Msg 2344: Good Morning Porch, Hazel. I'm off to Fun Girl's for breakfast. Fresh squeezed o.j. sounds sooo good. Aint had none of that since I visited my Uncle last April in Ventura California.
I've gotta go fix some windows now. I see Ernest T was in town.

September 27, 2001 - Msg 2345: Breakfast should be your best meal of the day, that's what they say. As my dear departed Aunt Dovie said, the first time she went to Cracker Barrell to eat, "Lord, ya'll know how to feed a body." She way Mayberry when Mayberry wasn't cool.
Fun Girl

September 27, 2001 - Msg 2346: There ain't nothing like a Cracker Barrel breakfast - oooo that hash brown casserole. MMM goood!
It is a little better day today. No one was tardy today and I only got dirty looks from 1/2 the students.
Just really busy, busy, busy.

September 27, 2001 - Msg 2347: Hey ya'll , Hope you had a good day. Been away all day at the All American Dairy show. My young 'un is a Dairy Princess. Had some of that good fair food, and lots of friends. Was Barney there with Juanita? Nita, JUaaaanita. I could have swore I heard him there!!! See ya in the morning. ~New Neighbor

September 27, 2001 - Msg 2348: Well folks, our dear, dear speech teacher has been promoted. They could not find anyone to take her position. So they finally had a lady interview and take the job. She is from Asia and she is as sweet as she can be, but doesn't feel real confident with the English language. This should be one hum-dinger of a combo. Put her and Little Opie together and will have funny stories to send into Readers Digest for years to come. But thank God for her. She took the job when no one else wanted it, so she will always be a hero to me. And a big THANK YOU to homemaker and all the dedicated special people in all the schools around the nation who take locker rooms and turn them into a place of learning. My hats off to ya lady!

Now I will get off my soap box and go and rustle up some grub for Little Opie and his Pa.
