Title: Ride through Mayberry
Post by retro on Mar 27th, 2009 at 8:28pm
Here is a quick ride through a part of the virtual 40 Acres town (w/ "quick 'n dirty" lo-res renderings from Sketchup):

heading west down the residential street...church is to the left:

approaching the intersection...the crossing that Malcolm guarded in an episode:

we can go either way around this building...we'll go to the right:

there's the courthouse:

passing the courthouse, Floyd's, etc.

continuing west, about to pass Mayberry Hotel and the Grand theater:

looking toward the left as we approach the intersection...there's the Mayberry Security Bank on the corner:

turning south down the side street...a seldom-traveled area in TAGS, but toward the left of the picture is the shop where Andy took Jeff Pruitt (Alan Hale) to buy a suit.  the entrance at the corner was a print shop where Aunt Bee briefly worked.

(continued in next message)

(continuing the ride through part of the virtual 40 Acres town...)

approach the south end of the cross street

at the end of the cross street - this building (facade) was only seen in the background in a few TAGS episodes

turning around and preparing to head back, we see a stairway resembling a Chicago L train stairway, and seen in the TV series "The Untouchables."  (with a Desilu truck parked around behind it!)

we have climbed the hill and are about to turn back east into the town.  note the streetcar track.

heading back into town...Who would have known that the "Mayberry Hotel" was so tall?

there is the Post Office entrance to our right:

there is the entrance to "Walker's Drug Store" - we will head to the right

looking to our right as we pass "Walker's"

the church (on the actual 40 Acres backlot, we would have seen the residential houses across the street on the left)

now we have turned left and will head north, down the short street beside the courthouse

down the side street

at the end of our ride

a peek behind the courthouse facade to remind us that, like this virtual model, Mayberry itself was a virtual town.

Awesome as usual, Retro.

Folks, as someone who also uses the software, I can tell you that what
Retro has done has required a mind-boggling amount of work !!

Here is a transition from a rough sketch taken from Retro's work
to an actual photo, then back again... to show how nearly perfect
his Sketchup drawings are:

Kipp,
Here's an idea that I'm not sure is possible but let me run it by you.  I know there are such things as animated GIF files made up of a series of still GIF files that when compiled into animated form simulate motion.  Not sure if there's a size restriction or number of files per animation, but is it possible to start with your Mayberry Google set and take snapshots of a walkthrough every couple of feet or so and compile them into an animated GIF that would simulate motion through the town, kinda like a car-mounted movie camera photographing a drive-around in Matberry.  Does this make sanse to anyone and is anyone out there enough in the know about such things to tackle such a project?  Just a thought.
Bill

I just noticed the movie posters you have included at the Mayberry Grand.
What a great touch, Retro.

Even Switchblade Sisters ( a little clever irony there ).

This is fantastic.  How cool, something that has been gone so many years, can still be enjoyed with today's technology!  Keep up the good work! ;)

What I'm trying to say Phil is what you and Retro for

Thanks Phil.   In the "standalone" model of the Grand (at http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=14929a403efa7e94ea3e4d6c8003e506 ) , there is a whole wall of posters behind the glass doors.  I had to remove these in the larger, town model, in order to lower the model size below 10MB, which is the current limit in Google's 3D warehouse.

I've been studying your sketchup models, how you've organized your groups and components.
Very thoughtful and well planned, Retro.

You obviously enjoy detail ( doorknobs, light fixtures, etc. ).  I enjoy that stuff too.

And you've mastered the most complicated part of 40 Acres which is how the buildings are
oriented to one another.  The town is laid out in a very unusual way.  There are not too many
right angles.

The pharmacy is a very odd shaped building, but you've drawn it perfectly.

I see that you're now moving into the residential area, with the Taylor house and Miss Pittypats.

Great job !

Thanks Phil!     I stalled out after the Taylor house and Aunt Pittypat's, and haven't done any modeling for the past four months, other than to correct the relative scaling of "Floyd's" and the other shops relative to the courthouse, which I discovered was off.

I need to get motivated again, and also to decide what to model next!
