Title: "Exterior" Scenes on the Sound Stage
Post by retro on Feb 15th, 2009 at 9:11am
This post expands on some of what has been discussed in the "door on wrong side..." thread over in the main forum.

This scene is on the courthouse exterior replica set at Desilu Cahuenga Studios, and includes a photo backdrop entirely inconsistent with the real set at 40 Acres.  This is the same backdrop frequently glimpsed through the blinds and window immediately behind Andy's desk (the courthouse right side window):

In the following scene, we see a photographic backdrop in the background (through the courthouse front window) of the 40 Acres church:

In the scene below, filmed at Desilu Cahuenga, we see the standard photographic backdrop of the 40 Acres facades across the street from the Courthouse & Floyds:

The same episode included seamlessly-integrated scenes filmed at the actual 40 Acres window with a live action background:

This scene is shot on the replica exterior set on the sound stage.  Notice the wall at the end of the sidewalk, as well as the storefront windows, which appear to utilize some type of fine mesh rather than real glass, and which are not angled downward:

Compare the shot above with the two below from 40 Acres, including the angled storefront windows, not to mention the lighting.   (The windows weren't angled in the earliest episodes, so you can't always go by this clue alone):

Another clue to the in-front-of-the-court house/Floyd's scenes is presence or lack of expansion joints in the 'sidewalk'.  Joints=40 acres, no joints= sound stage.

There's a difference in how the CH and Floyds 'buildings' come together between the two venues.

Check out the height of the window sill on the CH.  It's higher on the outdoor 40 Acre set.  I suspect it's shoulder high in the back 40.

I still wisht I knew what them winderboxes were for on the inside of the CH.  They appeared in the 2nd or 3rd season.

While creating the Taylor house 3D model, I found this minor inconsistency between the front porch mock exterior set and the actual 40 Acres set.   If you are wondering which set is in use in a given scene, and if you can see the front door, notice the narrow windows to the left and right of the door.  On the 40 Acres set, there were eight window panels in each.  On the mock exterior porch (which was part of the interior set), there were no vertical center bars in these windows, and only four total panels in each.   Trivial, I know, but these are the kinds of details you begin to notice when you're trying to nail down the details.  :)

Notice in the first picture the guy walking towards us is the same guy who wanted to rent equipment to dig up treasure.  :-?

These pictures are fascinating Retro!

I believe that scene is actually from that episode, Nat.  He goes into Floyd's to look for investors.

I am pretty sure that, in scenes #3 and #4 above, they could have shown sail boats and palm trees outside the window of Floyd's and nobody would have noticed (at least not the male viewers, that is!).  ;)

I have noticed that in most eps, Floyd's shop has a plant in the front picture window.  The plant is different between the 40 acres set and the indoor set.
