This is about 1 mile from my house. Andy visited him here in the local hospital not long before he passed. His son is the DA here. |

That's a right nice stone. Thanks for sharing Briscoe.
Just curious, Briscoe, What does S.M.A. stand for? Closest I could come to movie / TV production was Stop Motion Animator. Not sure that relates to TAGS. :-? |

After each episode of TAGS, if you look at the credits, you'll see the S.M.A. after Lee's name. Special Makeup Artist He was not only the makeup man for TAGS, but also Mayberry RFD, and most of the episodes of Gomer Pyle USMC. He and Andy were close friends and he also taught Andy how to shoot shotguns and bird hunt here in NC. As far as I know, his wife is still living. She lived here in the same house up until about 2000 when she moved to Charlotte, NC. |

Ah... I do remember seeing the initials after his name, I just never knew what they meant. Thanks Briscoe.

A few corrections on facts here. SMA is Society of Makeup Artists, of which Lee was one of the founding members.
Also, District Attorney Brad Greenway is a relative, but is a distant cousin of Lee's and NOT his son. |

FYI, I just found this forum and found bad information that needed to be corrected. Evidently that offended "someone" here.
Briscoe, why post information that has no basis? I mean come on ..''Special Makeup Artist" ???? ::) Briscoe, you also posted that Andy visited Lee at a local hospital shortly before his death, when in fact Lee died at Winston-Salem Baptist Hospital (over 3 hours away) and was hospitalized there for some time before his death. Briscoe, I think that you should change your name to Colonel Harvey,....coz your elixer is a bit mixed up. |

I been on sabbatical. (fancy word for 'playing hookey') The Gibson forum has been down for dusting, cleaning and greasing, so I end up back here. Good too, I forgot how friendly y'all are here. |

Really?? That's interesting. I just spent the last hour talking with Lee's 2nd cousin, Randy. Randy's grandfather and Lee's father were brothers. Lee passed away at Rutherford Hospital from cancer in 1989 as the tombstone states. Andy did visit him here in town and gave the eulogy at the 1st Baptist Church of Rutherfordton. My facts are correct as per Randy Greenway, Lee's 2nd cousin. Lee's home was about 200 yards from the hospital. Greenway Circle was the name of the entrance to the home, which was more like a mansion. The house is still there, but after Lee passed, his wife sold most of his belongings, as well as the house, and moved away to Charlotte, NC. She now lives in CA. I was mistaken about Brad Greenway, but I had misheard that somewhere in the past I reckon. Let's see.....oh yeah. Randy is the former Chief of Police here in town and now works for the SBI. His dad Frank, and Lee were closer in age and spent a lot of time together over the years, so Randy got to rub shoulders with Andy Griffith a lot, as Andy visited Lee frequently here in Ruffton. I'd say his word is pretty reliable, dontcha think? Me offended? Not in the least. My elixir is clear though, not mixed. Anything else you'd like to know, just let me know. Glad to do it! :) |

Mr. Briscoe, there is a lesson to be learned here. I hope "L" has learned that the next time he challenges you to a battle of wits, he needs to come armed with something beside unnecessary sarcasm. mmmhhhhh |
